Wall High School gymnastics coach and former teacher Gerald Basiak of Tinton Falls taught Dupre about 10 years ago when she was in the fifth grade at the Old Mill School in Wall.

“She was a wild kid. Basically, what I remember from her was she had a heart of gold, but she went to the beat of a different drum,” Basiak told the Asbury Park Press Wednesday night. “She didn’t really fit in with the kids, because she went a different way.”

Basiak said Dupre signed up to be a part of the gymnastics team during her freshman year in 2000, but never followed through.

“She was a very, very nice girl, and she did have some athletic talent but she never followed through at the high school. She was a very…spontaneous type, she was fun-loving, she was different. She wasn’t really a student. She probably could have gone a lot farther than she did if she had her mind set academically.”
