It speaks to your character, Alan, that you don’t harbor any real hatred for people who send you vitriol-filled nonsense e-mails like this.
My faith declares to me to hate the sin but not the sinner. The same goes for political views. Many of these people need to observe that. In fact, I think a lot of these e-mailers are just splitting…viewing no gray areas. “You’re either ALL bad or ALL good.”
If Hannity and Colmes can put up with one another for more than a decade, then maybe there is hope. I encourage my conservative brethren to not spew hatred at people they don’t agree with. It certainly doesn’t make our side look good.
And a word to Josh: there are hypocrites on both sides.

Alan~ this is the most interesting bunch of hate mail that you’ve posted to date.
Love the “your exclamation key is stuck” remark.
I cannot for the life of me figure out why people have concluded that you’re a racist. As a black person, during the Rev. Wright controversy, I felt like the conservative media was equating black liberation theology with all things black and negative. You were the ONLY radio voice I heard saying, wait a minute… these people developed their own churches b/c they WEREN’T ALLOWED to go to white churches… these people feel persecuted b/c of the legacy of slavery, Jim Crow, and even the Civil Rights Movement… and, you definitely illustrated that Rev. Wright doesn’t speak for the whole of black Americans.
By the way, how the hell are you a Jew Nazi? Ummm, I don’t think it works that way…

Regarding the race issue, which I am SO SICK AND FRUSTRATED WITH, there are two eye-opening reading resources for people. The first is a book called The Miseducation of the Negro, the second is something I personally wrote called “Dealing with America’s ‘Original Sin’ ” at http://mamashouse.org/Americas-Original-Sin.html Not tootin’ my own horn or anything, but I’m so emotionally entangled and dedicated to this issue that writing that little article made me feel like I was contributing to the solution.

Alan, do you ever read comments other than hate-filled rants? You should. Some of those comments are quite insightful and pose thoughtful questions of those, like yourself, who are intelligent, knowledgeable and educated. We need all the brain power in this world that we can get — on all sides of an issue.

cheryl in fredericksburg i just finished reading your article. it was very good and well researched. “race burden” – i will remember that phrase. i appreciated the personal touches as well; that of your own experience as a black woman in contrast to that of your grandmother. thanks for sharing the link.
