Transplant Refused Because Patient Used Marijuana. Legally.

April 26th, 2008, 2:15 PM EDT

His body is ravaged. Without a new liver he’ll be dead within days.  But Timothy Garon is being refused a transplant because he used marijuana, even though it was used legally. Committees that decide who gets access to the limited number organs available take into account whether patients use drugs or alcohol, worried that these are indicators of addictive personalities.

One hospital refused Garon unless he held to six months of abstinence.  Another insisted he enroll in a drug treatment program.  And Garon is charged with manufacturing marijuana, even though he stayed within the law on that one, too.

So, a doctor legally prescribes an herb, the patient follows the law, and he is denied a life-saving measure as a result.  This is a medical outrage.

  1. People against Pot should be forced to smoke it.

  2. Another argument in favor of the free market.

  3. I want a BIG ball of hash ! Man remember that stuff! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

  4. marijuana is a plant and should be treated like it.
Medicinal cannabis is so much healthier than zoloft, or prozac, or all these pharmaceuticals that people use to make them feel okay.
And you don’t have to smoke it… it can be cooked into food, just like ay other herb.

  5. This is straight BULLSHIT. Absolutely infuriating. It’s like telling another patient who didn’t use medical pot, but used medically prescribed pain killers, that they couldn’t receive their transplant b/c they used pain killers. God, what is wrong with us? Where is our logic? Common sense…

  6. Very very upsetting story. Oh my God this poor man.
    A DISGRACE AND AN OUTRAGE.

I don’t know what world or country I’m living in sometimes.
