Rev. Wright: “I Am Not Running For The Oval Office; I’ve Been Running For Jesus.”

April 27th, 2008, 11:49 PM EDT

At the NAACP:

Here’s more of what he said.

  • “I am not one of the most ‘divisive.’ Tell him the word is ‘descriptive.’ I describe the conditions in this country — conditions divide, not my description.”
  • “Please run and tell my stuck-on-stupid friends that Arabic is a language — is a language, it is not a religion. Barack HUSSEIN Obama. Barack HUSSEIN Obama, Barack HUSSEIN Obama. There are Arabic-speaking Christians, there Arabic-speaking Jews, Arabic-speaking Muslims and Arabic-speaking atheists. Arabic is a language, it is not a religion. Stop trying to scare folks by giving them this Arabic name like it’s some disease.”
  • “Africans have a different meter, and Africans have a different tonality. Europeans have seven tones, Africans have five. White people clap differently than black people. Africans and African-Americans are right-brained, subject-oriented in their learning style. They have a different way of learning.”
  • “Nobody says to a Kennedy, ‘You speak bad English,’ only to a black child was that said.”

  1. What did the peeps in Philly,& L.A.,& all the hoods in G’dam Amerika learn with their right-brianed orientation ? Guess you can’t teach them to stop shooting each other ; HUH ?

  2. Smithsoniaon.com then click on smithsonian magazine then type in “born into bondage”. by Paul Raffael. What would Jesus say about Africans selling slaves today Rev. Wright ? Oh; thats right Africans , NOT G’dam Americans!

  3. Well I feel better for writing this

Wow Jerry, you sure are stupid. God bless America!

Inspired speech Jeremiah, it won’t change much, but it’ll reinforce what some folk have been saying for a long time. What that is -of course- will be vastly different.

I’ll say this though, our prejudice, ignorance, and stupidity does NOT exist in a vaccume to be enjoyed by our own sense of self worth.

Every word I say, every action I take, every thought I have, I will account for -to God- very soon.

  4. The “Hussein” thing is low road politics, no doubt, but Wright is Wrong on the facts – he’s the one stuck on stupid.

Hussein (or Husayn) was the third Imam, the grandson of Mohammed. The name does have religious as opposed to merely “language” connotations. Not that that matters – his mother chose the name, not him, and religious tests are unconstitutional regardless. (Husayn was incidentally an opponent of the Caliphate and the original Shi’ite, which should actually bring comfort to those worried about the Sunni al Qaeda effort to revive the Caliphate.)

I’m not sure that the use of Hussein is supposed to be a religious slur anyway. I had assumed it was an attempt to tie Obama to Saddam Hussein, a secularist.

Stuck on stupid? How about stuck on racist? Can you imagine the outcry if John McCain, or maybe Trent Lott, had said -

“White people clap differently than black people. Africans and African-Americans are right-brained, subject-oriented in their learning style. They have a different way of learning.”

  5. Correct, a Kennedy probably won’t be told they speak poorly, but some Goober-Red-Neck will be told so. And yes, there are many Blacks that speak very well, but there are also many that don’t. As usual, it is not a “black or white” distinction. There are many “Grey” areas in all disparities such as this.

  6. The Con Media and all others who have been especially critical of Rev. Wright should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

Unrelated note: does anyone else notice the smiley face in the bottom left corner of the page? It’s in black font, way down in the corner.

  7. So there were no Hussein’s before the third Imam? He invented the name and all other Hussein’s before and after are beholden to Husayn?

And the perverted misuse of Obama’s middle name for political reasons is just as much a victim to racial fear as it is to Saddam Hussein fear -the intention is two-fold.

And again, the white/black comparison is always going to be a slanted one. We were never on even keel, till maybe now, but that’s arguable.

It’s ok to say to say we’re different, white or black. The problem is history shows when white people say we’re “different” it’s followed with Jim Crow laws, when black people say we’re “different” it’s to understand cultural differences.

I’m simplifying of course, but we’re not talking about red neck whites and po’ blacks, we’re talking about good godly men being dragged through the mud because of their racial awareness and out-spokenness.

Reverend Wright is not a racist. Not even close.

  8. the real question is how many more revrend wright do Obama intend to take with him into the white house. how many of the people will do damage to america by providing info to the enemies. Being number 1 is very hard to maintain and the test for the new leaders should change with time.

  9. Noel, once again you have spoken very well on the issue. Unfortunately, tradition HAS shown that whites speaking about blacks are speaking from a prejudice, be it subconscious or outright purposefully conscious. So now we have a generation where many whites are not prejudice, but many blacks are so used to the prejudice from the past AND the present that we’re always on guard when a white person speaks about us. It’s a hard reality to live with for both whites and blacks, but we have to get through it together. It’s like I said in the article I wrote, we have to understand the life perspective that each person comes from, or we’ll just perpetuate the anger.

I’m not sure where Wright gets his facts regarding the left brain/right brain thing… anyone know?

  10. Yes, I noticed the black smiley face, or whatever it is, Cheryl. I also mentioned it somewhere.

  11. I’d like to know what Wright means by a “right-brain learning style” and if there are any educators who agree with that.

  12. Just like I figured . NOBODY read the Smithsonian article.. How bout it NOEL ?

  13. Jerry~ I think that I can speak for most, if not all, of the regular bloggers here… You posted that article in defense of your overtly prejudiced views against blacks. We all know you’re a racist, Jerry. You’ve made it very clear in your posts. Furthermore, the posters on this blog are an intelligent bunch. Most of us are aware that slavery and near slavery conditions still exist throughout the world. You’d like to use the example of slavery in West Africa to defend your racism. All you’ve accomplished is demonstrating how narrow-minded you are.

For the record, slavery did not start in West Africa. Slavery is about as old as human civilization. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but there’s been some level of slavery or indentured servitude in all of history’s civilizations.

Perhaps the continuance of slavery conditions in parts of Africa is a result of British colonialism, and the lack of economic stability which causes some individuals to do disgusting things in order to ensure their own survival. Ever read ANIMAL FARM, LORD OF THE FLIES, or A MAN OF THE PEOPLE?

As stated, your continued posts regarding the Smithsonian article prove nothing but your ignorance.

  14. The thing that troubles me the most about the whole “Hussein” deal is that it capitalizes completely on bigotry. Even if Barack Obama IS a Muslim, SO WHAT!?

  15. I say Obama is whatever he says he is concerning religion. If he says he’s a Sikh, than that’s what he is. Whatever.

  16. Its funny all the audio/video that i have seen on Mr.wright doesnt contain too much of the bible? I wonder why???

  17. Dear #1 seculer progressive:

Please expand on “all the audio/video” that you’ve seen. You make it sound as if you’ve heard more than mere soundbites, or a few minutes of selected sermons posted by Wright detractors on YouTube.

  18. “whites speaking about blacks are speaking from a prejudice”

Gee, that doesn’t reflect any kind of prejudice, does it?

  19. Tom~ FIRST OF ALL, you didn’t properly quote me.

Second, if you’d actually read the comment in full you’d see that I’m speaking to the challenges that whites and blacks face in successful race relations.

I suggest that you take the time to read the comments before wasting my time with a response.

  20. Tom, sorry about that last comment. I didn’t mean to be a bitch. I really think you misread my initial comment. I take race issues really seriously, and I’m not at all prejudiced.

  21. :)

  22. Did anyone else notice how differently the good reverand spoke (inflection, volumne etc.) when he was before the press club vs. the NAACP ??

  23. Budda~ I noticed it, but isn’t part of oration knowing your audience and adjusting your tone and presentation accordingly?

  24. I would agree that you ’speak to’ your audience rather then ‘at them’. Sometimes it’s overdone and becomes vaudvillian (is that a word?)

  25. Yes, “vaudevillian” is a word. lol
