McCain’s Other Pastor Problem

May 8th, 2008, 11:19 PM EDT

His name is Rod Parsley, and we wrote about him back in March. Now, Think Progress has the video of John McCain and Parsely, interspercing McCain’s delight at the endorsement with some of the things Parsley has said.

  1. And this will never get anywhere near the media coverage of the Obama-Wright “scandal”. I ask you, Republicans, what “liberal media”?

  2. I’m a Hillary supporter…I hope she wins…but I’ll still vote for Obama if he is the nominee. The truth is plain and simple. It’s McCains turn, just like it was Bob Doles’s turn to run. Democrats WILL win in November. It doesn’t matter who endorses McCain…he’s not gonna win. I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but McCain can not beat Clinton or Obama. I firmly believe we will be in good hands with either Democrat as the nominee.

  3. Ooh, it’s getting ugly.

Today Obama did an interview with Wolf Blitzer and objected to Mcain getting dirty pointing out Hamas prefers Obama and suggesting a line of weakness exists (and that’s putting it nicely)between Obama and the Hamas terrorist organization.

So Obama says Mcain’s dirty suggestion that Barack is somehow sympathetic to terrorists is exactly the deplorable politics Mcain promised not to engage in and further said this is “an example of Mcain losing his bearings” on the facts and issue.

    Here we go!

Mcain’s camp is furious, saying Obama is attacking the old bastard and Republicans are beginning an onslaught of spin, misdirection, and old fashioned lying that’ll continue all the way to November.

Put on your truth detectors yall and buckle down it’s gonna be one hell of an election.

  4. The left is really getting desperate to try and smooth over the Rev Wright issue. Unfortunately for them there is no equal comparison. McCain hasn’t been mentored by any of the individuals that he’s sought the endorsement of.
It is implied that Obama didn’t seek out the endorsement of Wright. Why would he have to seek it? He’s had Wright’s endorsement for his entire political career. As well,Obama appointed Wright a position on his campaign staff. This was done, assumedly, because he valued Wright’s council. This can’t ba said of McCain.
How can McCain’s involvement with Haggee or Parsley be logically compared with Obama’s involvement with Wright?
I’m not saying that MCain’s solicitations of their endorsements are sincere, obviously it was done purely for political gain. Yet from my understanding when Obama first began his political career in Chicago Wright’s church was a big feather in his hat with the constituancy(sp?)he sought the support of. Not saying that was the only reason for joining the church, yet it did factor into his political asperations.

    Flame away at me…

  5. Craig, I do think something matters as much as the bad of Wright, and that’s his good, and how Obama would, from his years of knowing the Pastor, know of it and what affect that has on his perception of Wright. For me, it’s when one speaks glowingly about strangers while having such little history with them and, therefor, basis for sincerely believing the praises he gave, that I doubt his judgement.

  6. Craig, your premise that Obama’s relationship to Wright is a political one is flawed. Should he only have friends that agree with him politically?

I don’t think that McCain shares Hagee or Parsely’s views either….I’m just wondering why he would seek out the endorsements of these men. Obama’s situation I can understand since Wright was the man who led him to Jesus. McCain has too much class to seek the endorsements of such lunatics…he knows better.

If I were a McCain supporter, this wouldn’t deter me from voting for him…but it shows me that he’s really sold his soul to the ultraconservative wing of the Republican Party. I starting to think that he is running to serve out George Bush’s third term…..he’s certainly not acting like the John McCain I was aware of.

  7. Hey Mikey!,
I thought I’d listen to the video, and read the current comments. And, to my surprise, here you are bad mouthing christian ministers again.
Everything mentioned in the video by Mr. Parsley is true, and he has plenty of historical fact to back up his statement.
However, christianity and facts are something you have very little knowledge of, and it shows every time you blog.
Why don’t you blog about something you do have knowledge in, like the fictional story of “Your Dog Spot”. Or, are you going to keep pretending to be the true theologian you think you could be?

  8. Fact: Barack Obama, although born in the USA, spent most of his childhood and early teen years with his father in Kenya. In those years his father (a Muslim)raised Barack in ISLAM (the Muslim religion).
Historical Fact: Muslims hate Israel (a friend to America), and all Jews, Christians and anyone else who does not believe in Allah. For thousands of years they have murdered millions of them in the name of Allah, and it’s this historical fact (something you miss)that is the basis for Mr. Parsley’s and Mr. Hagees statements.
Barack returns to America and attends college. Several years later he meets Rev. Wright (I use Rev. lightly) and begins his political career. Over the next 20 years Barack is influenced by a man who’s teachings of scripture are skewed. Several of his remarks were aired on television in their entirety (which I’m sure you missed). His racial remarks, and accusations of whites infecting blacks with AIDS, or whites plotting the 9-11 attacks are nothing short of madness. Fact is truth Mike, and all of Mr. Wright’s statements are like yours. All assumptions. Nothing based on fact. This man may have a PHD in theology, but he fails miserably as a minister. You can’t mix the teachings of Christ with hatred and lies.
Yet, I hear no name calling, or contempt for this man in your statements. You reserve that to use against the men who speak the truth, good ministers of
faith like Mr. Hagee and Mr. Parsley.
Barack Obama has had hatred and lies taught to him by terrible religious leaders all his life and we should be concerned about it.
However, there are many people like you Mike who would ignore the truth even if it was staring them in the face because you have nothing good to say about truth, or anyone who speaks it. And that’s a FACT.

  9. “You can’t mix the teachings of Christ with hatred and lies.”

    I rest my case.

  10. “Fact: Barack Obama, although born in the USA, spent most of his childhood and early teen years with his father in Kenya. In those years his father (a Muslim)raised Barack in ISLAM (the Muslim religion).”

If you’d have bothered to do any research, you would know that Barack’s father left him when he was 2. He only saw his father once more in his life.

“Historical Fact: Muslims hate Israel (a friend to America), and all Jews, Christians and anyone else who does not believe in Allah.”

Ha! Maybe in your little world…I have a few Muslim friends and I can assure you that none of them “hate” Jews.

“For thousands of years they have murdered millions of them in the name of Allah, and it’s this historical fact (something you miss)that is the basis for Mr. Parsley’s and Mr. Hagees statements.”

Have you ever heard of the Crusades?

“Over the next 20 years Barack is influenced by a man who’s teachings of scripture are skewed.”

I didn’t realize that you were the sole opinion on the matter.

“His racial remarks, and accusations of whites infecting blacks with AIDS, or whites plotting the 9-11 attacks are nothing short of madness.”

I agree, don’t get used to it ;).

“You reserve that to use against the men who speak the truth, good ministers of
faith like Mr. Hagee and Mr. Parsley.”

What makes you so sure that Hagee and Parsley speak “the truth”?

  11. ugh, here we go again. Confusing real facts with shotty research.

  12. A grammatical error doesn’t distort the truth that he was raised a Muslim (by his grandfather) as a child. I doubt you have Muslim friends, but if you do I doubt they’re truthful to you. Enlighten me about the “Crusades” Mikey, I can’t wait for the spin. Mixing hate, false accusations, and lies with christian teaching is “skewed” Mikey. Again, some nightschool classes in reading comprehention seem to be in order. What makes you so sure Barack is “honest”. Lastly, I’ve never said a hateful word against anyone. Critisism is not hatred Mikey. Please consider taking the night class, OK?

  13. Since you brought up “the Crusades” within your argument (I knew you eventually would)could you explain your point of why you did? By all means Mike, being the true historian that you are, please give me your simple historicle perspective about where it began, how it began, and why. While your at it, I’d also like about your historical knowledge regarding catholicism. I can’t wait for your history lesson, professor.

  14. On the issue of the crusades, they were not in line with biblical teachings. In contrast, those muslims who murder individuals who are not and will not convert to their religion act in accordance WITH their teachings.
    Again,you can’t judge a philosophy by it’s abuse.

  15. Hi Craig,
It is being understood by many people around the world that Christians and Muslims believe in the same God. They do not, and when I try to point out the differences I’m accused of hate. Mike tried this by bringing up the Crusades to make a pointless point. And, if murdering someone because they refuse to believe in their religion is acceptable because such “an act is in accordance with their teachings”, I’d say someone has a very twisted mind.
And, none of this has anything to do with philosophy.

  16. By your last sentence I can see that you have no understanding of what philosophy even is.
For an introductory on religious philosophy I recommend the writtings of Ravi Zacharias or even Dinesh D’souza.

I try not to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

  17. To bonehead in Bull Island. Again, nitwit, non of this had anything to do with philosophy.

  18. Within any of my discussions was there ever any mention of Thales, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, St. Augustine or any other great philosopher, or their philosophies. Biblical fact is not philosophy. However, if it’s philosophy you want here is some just for you: Philosopher Aquinas “To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible”.

  19. A little of Ken’s philosophy: “A bonehead refuses to understand anything he reads, while a nitwit just can’t read”.

  20. Ken, don’t you have anything better to do than act like a tough guy from behind your computer screen?
