At NRA Huckabee Jokes About Someone Shooting Obama
It was at the 137th NRA Leadership Forum in Louisville. First, Karl Rove got up and blasted Obama for saying bitter people cling to guns and religion.
(Rove) said it was not the place of the government to “pick and choose” which rights to deny and allow its citizens. He went further by saying “We believe in the wisdom of the founders even more than the wisdom of a liberal senator from the south side of Chicago.”
Here we go again. Using “liberal” as a perjorative. And if government shouldn’t pick and choose which rights our founders had in mind, I presume that should include the right to privacy, the right to not be searched without a warrant, and Habeas corpus. After Rove spoke, Huckabee took a shot at Obama.
Mike Huckabee…was interrupted by a loud noise. “That was Barack Obama,” he said. “He just tripped off a chair. He was getting ready to speak and someone pointed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtkK7qaaPMk]
Will Huck be rewareded for this with a vice presidential nod?
Update: Huckabee apologized:
“During my speech at the NRA a loud noise backstage, that sounded like a chair falling, distracted the crowd and intrupted my speech. I made an off hand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama.
I apologize that my comments were offensive that was never my intention.”

sigh

Good God Almighty. Unbelievable.
May 16th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Mike Huckabee, a supposed reverend, makes jokes about a man being shot? wow! I used to have thoughts of a Obama/Huckabee 08 ticket, mainly because I respected Huckabee. Let me be the first to admit how wrong I was about Huckabee. I now have to say I was totally wrong about Huckabee, he’s a typical politician, following the lead of the GOP machine, saying anything to keep the attention on them – you lost my respect today – and I think you owe Obama an apology! What would Jessus say???? That was not a funny joke at all.
What a stupid comment. What would anyone with good sense do if someone aimed a gun at you? I had respect for Huckabee, even though he’s a Republican. Once I thought he had a good sense of humor…now I think he’s just a wannabe who’s been relegated to the back pages of the 2008 election season
May 16th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Alan, this sounds like something your buddy Sean “The Big Hate” Hannity would say. I hope you blast Sean about what his Repug friend Huckabee said. But, knowing “The Big Hate”, he won’t see anything at all wrong with what Huckabee said.
May 16th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
Mr. Huckabees attempt at humor among those of the NRA address failed. While I agree it was’nt funny why do all you cry babies always demand an apology? Grow up children!
May 16th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
And Hillary was sooooo proud that she ducked that sniper fire in Bosnia. Liberals fear guns but not the AIDS virus being spread by gays. They seem to have more than their heads up their asses.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
No one asked for an apology, Ken. Not here. I’m sighing because I’m pro gun and that dumb joke will be associated with people like me by some dumbass, if for no other reason than the fact that Huckabee felt comfortable enough to make the “joke” before that NRA audience.
As, for Huckabee, never cared for him.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
Mr. Huckabee~ Not cool, man. Not cool at all.
Mr. Rove~ I take offense not just at using the word “liberal” as a smear, but also at saying Obama’s from the “south side” of Chicago… as if Obama’s walking along the campaign trail throwin’ up gang signs, talkin’ about “SOUTH SIDE! WASSUP!”.
These two were playing to the audience, and I am not at all comfortable with what it says about the audience. Just think about how comfortable they were in making these statements…
May 16th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
I watched that video very carefully. My impression is that Huckabee knew he had made a big mistake the second that line came out of his mouth. Not to mention the lack of response by the audience.
Really really stupid thing on his part. He’s a little more savvy than that, so I don’t know what his excuse is.
Maybe he should stay away from gun conventions and stick with floating crosses.

Ever seen the Anime Trigun, Epiphany? A character, a Priest actually, carried a giant cross shaped gun.

OH for God’s sake! Holy Moly. lol.
May 16th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
You can tell a lot about someone by what they find funny.
Gun nuts and Baptists find humor in the oddest “jokes”.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Massive liberal hand-wringing going on here. It’s at an NRA meeting…people who belong to the NRA generally have guns and are opposed to people on the liberal side of the spectrum. Thus the connection…and I agree it was a badly conceived JOKE. Inappropriate, but good grief people.
I hate to always use Alan as an example, but this is his site. How many times has Alan told an off-color or borderline inappropriate joke? A few times at least in 12 years.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
Sorry, but joking about the killing or assasination of a presidential candidate is pretty repulsive. Especially when it’s about Barack Obama who must be getting a record amount of death threats daily.
I’ll bet anything that some of the people in that audience may have felt a little queasy themselves.
Sorry for the hand-wringing but I don’t think you have to be a liberal to find that “joke” highly offensive.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
You ninni’s missed the whole point of the joke. Barak Obama, who has an adversion to the Constituton, would never appear at the NRA. DUH.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I have a basement cabinet full of long guns.
I was once an enrolled member of the NRA.
I can outshoot 80% of the gun nuts at the average NRA convention.
The NRA was once a collection of sportsmen. It’s now a collection of weirdos. People like Karl Rove who have no more business with a gun than they do with a Ducati superbike. Posers who dress in camo for their trips to the mall. People who find humor in stuff like this … nuts.
May 16th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Anonymous~ apparently YOU didn’t get the joke. The fact that Obama wouldn’t have been at the NRA meeting has nothing to do with it.
May 16th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Mouse~ remind me not to piss you off, girl!
May 16th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
Bitter, bitter, bitter!!!
Arghhhhh!!!!!
May 16th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
WFG,
First, there are cry babies within this blog demanding an apology. Yes here. It’s obvious you are’nt reading them.
Second, I not just pro gun, but an owner. So what’s your point?
Third, it takes a dumbass to be intimidated by a dumb joke, and I could care less how you feel about Mr. Huckabee.
May 16th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Really bad taste…from a christian man it is even more unreal! It’s sad that it comes to this, after so many elected officials getting killed in history!
And I thought he was one of the good brains on the Repub side….
Well, he did apologized tho, but still lost my respect.I can’t vote in this election cause I’m Canadian but I still follow this with extreme interest. !!! Come on politicians, clean up your act, will ya??!!!
Thank God I’m Canadian!!!
May 16th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
What are the politics like in Canada?
May 16th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Tom,
I really amazes me how ordinary imperfect people expect perfection out of other ordinary imperfect people just because they’re Christians. The fact is Christians know they’re imperfect and it’s one reason they follow Christ, who is perfect. Can your perfect little mind grasp what I’ve said? Probably not. why not concentrate your little perfect mind on your own politicians? Does Canada even have politicians?
May 16th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Wait a minute! Wait a minute! Something’s not right here! A republican APOLOGIZED?? He didn’t try to spin it and say his words were taken out of context?
My God man! What’s next? George Bush speaking perfect English?
May 17th, 2008 at 12:01 am
I don’t demand perfection, just common sense but obviously you, Ken, prefer to stay in your little cocoon and I would suggest that you learn about other cultures and how other countries are governed. I love learning about other places than my own, kinda educate myself a bit more. But that’s me.
Cheryl, our politics are also heated but not salty. We try to keep it civilized and debate the real issues and not make gossips and lies to sway votes. Beside, we would see through the BS and not believe stories like I’ve been seeing the last few months. “Dodging sniper fire..” LOLOL …Pastor Wright says things and people believe that Obama is like that too. Geeee….
But I know it will not stop til a President is elected. I have lots of head shaking to do in the future, I’m sure.
Peace all!
May 17th, 2008 at 12:03 am
LOLOL Tdro ..you make me spit my Pepsi on my keyboard. 8)
Peace all!!
May 17th, 2008 at 12:05 am
TDro~ LOL
Tom~ I hope you’re not insinuating that Americans are stupid??? Anyway, you should keep visiting us down here. Give us updates on what’s going on around and ‘aboot’ Canada.
May 17th, 2008 at 12:30 am
I would never call Americans stupid, just needs to think a bit longer and not take hearsay as the gospel truth. What my old time friend says doesn’t means I believe the same thing and that everyone points a finger at me saying “He’s like that too, ya know” !!!
Cheryl, we still in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban and Bin Laden gang. Kinda hard tho when they retreat in Pakistan where we can’t go tho. But we’ll keep at it as best we can. In my view , it’s where the fight should be, not in Iraq.
Peace all!!!
May 17th, 2008 at 12:40 am
I will not insinuate that Americans are stupid. I will state that many are. I am often embarrassed. And disguested.
My evidence? George W. Bush for 8 years.
May 17th, 2008 at 12:54 am
*disgusted.
May 17th, 2008 at 12:55 am
I love Canadians, even married one once
May 17th, 2008 at 12:56 am
Liberal isn’t “pejorative.” It’s a shorthand way of saying that Obama supports a whole host of policies that conservatives (which believe it or not is not a pejorative either) disagree with – tax increases, lower defense spending, third trimester abortion, trading the Sudetenland or the West Bank for peace in our time, etc. If being called liberal is more heat than Obama can take, he probably ought to get out of the kitchen.
May 17th, 2008 at 2:54 am
Hey, Alan, you misspelled pejorative. What’s next, opposing nukyeler weapons?
May 17th, 2008 at 2:58 am
Tom,
I could care less about someones culture, or how other countries are governed. You talk about debating real issues while concerning yourself about a joke. You speak about seeing through the BS while you add your own about Huckabee. After twenty years of listening to Mr. Wright I think Obama is of the same mindset. And, your concern over these blogs is shallow considering you’re here typing as well.
May 17th, 2008 at 7:50 am
Ken, I don’t believe that Wright been spewing that crap he said all those years or Obama would have left at the beginning. Wright saw a chance to have his 15 mins of fame and he took it, even tho he knew he would bring that garbage on Obama’s back.
I’ve been listening to all candidates so far and from my point of view and not having any gain from all this, I can say that Obama is the most honest and sincere of all of them (also Ron Paul, I like him too). I’m not saying he’s a saint either, but he’s been stepped on from every sides and remained collected and fought back. I’m 49 years old and been around the block lots in my trucking life (23 yrs). I get a good read on people I’ve met on the road and Obama is the right choice for America.
This gun joke was bad, heck even the crowd didn’t laugh, he must have realized it the moment it came out, no doubt. Therefore he did apologized. Hell with all the nutcases around , why give ideas to 1 or more of them. For elected officials, it’s always in the back of their mind, that’s why Obama has Secret Services detail with him, the world is a dangerous place, we all know it.
Peace all!!!
May 17th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Tom,so you think that Wright just cranked up this retoric to gain attenton? You assume that Obama would have left had this been going on the entire time? So much for you Canadians “seeing through the BS.”
May 17th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Grandpa Grump~ chill. The gun joke is a big deal to a lot of people.
Anonymous~ the word “liberal” is often said with absolute disgust, making it a pejorative. From m-w.com, it’s “: having negative connotations; especially : tending to disparage or belittle”
Tom~ A lot of people felt like Wright was LOVING the spotlight and stepping it up a notch. He loved his 15 minutes of fame.
May 17th, 2008 at 1:05 pm
Well, Ken’s partially correct, one person said Huckabee should apologize, of course he should.
May 17th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
WFG~ I thought you got struck by lightning boy?!!! You’re back! Yeah!!!
May 18th, 2008 at 12:54 am
Ken:
Yes, Christians are held to a higher standard, as they should be. If everyone else on our planet is going to hell except them, they’d better be pretty good.
Also, according to the Bible that they follow, it’s all or nothing. No sitting on the fence. No lukewarm stuff, or God will spit you out of His mouth, right?
Also, by the way, they’re supposed to sell everything they have and give the money to the poor…and a lot of other stuff.
Maybe they shouldn’t call themselves Christians if they don’t want to be expected to act like it.
May 18th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
I’m so not Christian that I don’t think the golden rule applies to me.
