People like this are why I am nervous that there will be an attempt on Obama’s life. The last presidential assassination attempt was on Reagan… not long ago at all. Just think about how incredibly worked up people get about his race and “communist” policies.
A great book that I think would help capture the mentality of hatred for those who are like “what the hell is their problem?” is A GATHERING OF OLD MEN by Ernest Gaines. That book was published in 1983.
In 1996 I was 14 and living outside of Johnstown, PA. My bro and I were the only 2 black kids at our middle school. A big, tough looking white kid caught me in the hall alone one day and literally spat the word “nigger” in my face. That was in 1996. Can you imagine that? I’m sure you all can imagine that I had some strong words for him in response to that :-) but after it was over I went back into my classroom and really just sobbed. The teacher kept asking me what was wrong and I couldn’t answer him. I was just crying. This was not an isolated incident, just the first of a series of outright racial situations my bro and I were thrown into that year.
When I think about people like that, I get worried for Obama.

As long as people are different there will be racism around. I am sorry you had to go through that, cheryl. I’m lucky that I’ve never had to deal with that type of thing. It’s good to be in the majority I guess…in some ways.
Do you think it’s more hatred or just ignorance? Nowadays, I find it hard to believe that very many white people really “hate” blacks (unless you’re in the KKK). So I think people are just ignorant I guess. The reason I say that is I think the word racism is WAY overused in our society. I think someone could use the “n” word all the time and not be a racist. Racially insensitive, but not racist.
Racism, to me, is “I’m intrinsically BETTER than those people based on my ethnicity/skin color.” Or, “those people are intrinsically WORSE than me because they’re this ethnicity/skin color.” It’s not necessarily based on a word. To me, MLK is a hero and one of the greatest Americans of the last century (and our history). COLORBLIND society!! We’re all children of God.

Flap~ I think that the word “racism” can sometimes be overused. But when a person uses a racial expletive, it’s generally indicative of an internal opinion. I don’t think people just say those words for the hell of it.
Talk about irony, folks… Tonight at the gas station, the Middle Eastern owner told a white dude in a business suit (minus the jacket) that he couldn’t buy the case of Heineken he had in his hand b/c he’d already been drinking. The owner’s name is Esse, nice guy. The dude points his finger in his face and says “Do you know how to speak United States, you fucking Arab?” And then threw the beer on the counter and stomped out of the story.
True frickin’ story. It happened maybe 5 hours ago. Anyway, that totally blew me. I put my son in the car and drove up to DC and took a ride past my favorite monuments.

WOW. These people are insane. I can’t stand Obama but there is no excuse for this kind of rude behavior. At least they could learn to spell.
I’m sick and tired of extremists on both sides- far right and far left. We have completely lost all sense of civility and common courtesy. I suppose for some, it’s easier to throw at profanities and insults than to craft a thoughtful, fact based argument.
It’s time we take our country back from these crazy people and focus on what we have in common. Leave these fools to stew in their hate. Maybe it will give them time to learn how to use spell check.

CC: Thankfully you weren’t assaulted, and if it’s any consolation it seems pretty clear that people like that Neanderthal who got in your face are a dying breed, so maybe before many more decades have passed the vast majority of the population will be guided by the fact that we’re all one race, the human race, and we can go on from there.
I think just the fact that Barack is in the race for the nomination is going to contribute toward change, regardless of who wins. I know it’s effected me. The first time I heard the Rev. Wright sound bite I was absolutely outraged on several counts. Then I listened to the whole 9/11 zermon. Then I read the transcript. Then I caught the Bill Moyers interview. And along the way I caught an interview or two with Eric Dyson. And I did a little thinking too.
And my hunch is that, here and there, at least a couple of other people may have had an experience similar to mine, leading them to conclude that we really do have some work to do if we’re going to live up to our American ideals and become one nation, indivisible, with justice for all.

Nancy~ I’m sick of all the extremists, too. India Arie is kind of an R&B/folk type singer, and she has a song where she says “When will we learn to come back to the middle?”.
I’m just utterly disillusioned right now. Are we doing anything good in Iraq or not? Should we stay or go? If we just leave won’t we just be deserting the people there, leaving them to clean up our mess? I hear soldiers who say they see the incredible things we’re doing (like building schools) and then soldiers who see us shooting innocent civilians, including women and children… I don’t know what to believe anymore.
I do know that I’m not reading anymore Howard Zinn for a while. I guess he’s a realist, but he’s so pessimistic that I can’t take anymore. I don’t think I’m a pacifist… if someone is standing in front of me, arm moving forward to hit me, I’m going to defend myself. Zinn doesn’t seem to take into account that there are different levels of danger. I agree with him from a humanist stand point… I’m not down with war for war’s sake. But if there’s a just cause that needs to be defended, and there are no other means other than military, then the military has got to go in.
Another thing I’m starting to wonder about is just how great is the “American spirit”? The heroes and heroines in American history have their own counterparts in the history of other countries. America isn’t the only country to have given rise to strong, revolutionary individuals. So then what makes our “spirit” any better than the spirit of most other countries?

Some people say the last “good” war was WWII. There is validity to that, although it is not always easy to tell what would have happened had we NOT gone to war in certain places.
I guess you know you are a true pacifist if you think we shouldn’t have fought in WWII. Korea, Vietnam, and both the Iraq Wars…the case could be made both ways.
Cheryl: I share some of your exact concerns about Iraq. It’s hard to know. I was initially for going into Iraq, and I don’t necessarily think it was entirely wrong, and I think we are doing a whole lot of good, but it’s just a big grey area that is hard to reconcile.
