Wingnuts Call Rachael Ray A Tool Of Jihad

May 25th, 2008, 10:26 AM EDT

You can’t make this stuff up.  Ray wears a scarf in an ad for Dunkin’ Donuts (which is much better than Starbucks, btw) and it looks like a keffiyeh.

h/t Crooks and Liars.

Keffiyehs were originalliy worn by Palestinians, but have become fashion accessories without political meaning.   But that hasn’t stopped the wingnuts from going crazy.  Michelle Malkin refers to this as “hate coutur4e”, calls Ray a “dumb celebrity” and questions whether there should be a DD boycot.  Charles Johnson at LGF says this is “mainstreaming terrorism.”  Pam Geller is calling for people to contact Rachael Ray and complain to Dunkin’ Donuts because this scarf “stands for murdering Jews.”

Responses to this post...

  1. So today I learned that “wingnuts” refers to “right-wing nutjobs,” and that Rachel Ray is part Sicilian and part Cajun and got her first job at the candy counter at Macy’s in NYC. And apparently she hosts a talk show and knows quite a bit about cooking.

But more to the point, an employee at the Kings Park, NY, Dunkin’ Donuts was recently arrested for placing a hidden camera in the women’s lavatory.

    See the connection?

  2. I still have never been to a freestanding Starbucks! Part of me refuses to go there just because everyone loves it so much. I don’t drink coffee, either.

I don’t know about this…at first I was like “it’s just a freakin’ scarf, who cares” but apparently this style is associated with Arafat and pro-Palestinian causes. I haven’t been to Dunkin Donuts in forever but this would certainly not cause me to stop going.

But if people started wearing white hoods or swastikas would that be okay? I’m not saying it’s necessarily analogous, but symbols, styles, etc. can convey values and ideas.

  3. You know, I would just laugh at all the moronic statements and stunts pulled by folks on both sides of the party lines- but I can’t laugh b/c these morons cause too much damage.

RC~ I think that you’ve done a lovely job illustrating the typical conservative method of guilt by association, viz a viz connecting A to B to 1 to Red.

Flap~ what do you mean you don’t drink coffee? wtf?! There’s something very wrong with you… :-) Most of Starbucks menu is overrated, but I drink a lot of coffee at home. I drink a good bit of decaf b/c I’m one of those who loves the taste of the drink, but doesn’t need all the caffeine.

That’s not the best analogy, but I can see where you’re going with it. It really is “just a scarf”, no more no less. I think it’s very stylish, with a rustic cowgirl type look.

  4. In the words of Geraldo Rivera: “Michelle Malkin is the most vile, hateful commentator I’ve ever met in my life”

That is the truth. How can anybody who defends the internment of all Japanese Americans during WWII be taken seriously?

  5. What a sad, frightening little world Ms. Malkin must live in, where the most seemingly innocent sights and sounds must be interpreted through the most malevolent filter. Small weak animals behave this way, jumping and squealing at every movement, every object that appears in their path.

That said, I tried Dunkin’ Donuts coffee the last time I traveled to the east coast, and it was the same oily swill that I’ve always associated with fast-food joints and convenience stores. Starbucks is, in my opinion, much better — Though Peets (available mostly on the west coast, I believe) is vastly superior…

  6. I think it’s a beautiful scarf. In fact I will make it my goal to get one just like that.

Michelle Malkin should seek out psychiatric counseling.

I LOVE Starbucks. Dunkin’ Donuts too. But for years and years I have only ordered the same thing at Starbucks. An iced cappuccino grande with whipped cream and cinnamon. Oh God it’s orgasmic…

  7. * Loss of Freedom. Americans lost their freedoms with the Patriot Act and Iraq lost its freedoms with the new constitution. Iraq is worse off physically, economically, militarily, socially and religiously. This is what America will experience.
    * Installation of a Religious Government. We replaced a secular Islamic, brutal dictatorship, that we had installed and supported, with a religious Islamic government. The fact is that Iraq gave more freedom to other religions, women and other groups than any other Islamic nations in the region. And it is very ironic that a war to find weapons of mass destruction which became a war to bring freedom had done the opposite. The draft constitution says.
o Islamic Law. Islam is a primary source of legislation.
o Other Law. Any law that contradicts Islam will not be tolerated.
In other words, Islam is the primary source of legislation. A religious government will also be installed in America.
    * Persecution and Torture. Americans tortured. They tortured children. They raped young children.
    * Civil War and Destabilization. Babylon the Great will split in three according to Revelation 16: 19. Iraq is already split into three factions and is in danger of being deluged by a civil war. There has been a civil war since 2005, with 3500 dead and tortured and mutilated every month in Baghdad alone. About the same number are blown apart by suicide bombs and improvised explosive devices (IED). 5,000,000 people will be homeless by the end of 2007. Another 1,000,000 have been estimated to be killed.
o Sunni Muslim. A minority in the north west who controlled the country in the previous government. There is almost no oil in their region. But Al-Qaeda now controls the Anbar province where they live.
o Shia (Shi’a) Muslim. A majority, concentrated in the south, who had no power in the previous government. Oil fields are located in their region. The other country with a majority Shi’a population is Iran. Fears of a Shia-Iranian union linger.
o Ethnic Kurd. A Sunni population, but an ethnic minority. The Kurds are the largest ethnic population without their own country. They are concentrated in the north and they had some autonomous rule under Saddam. Oil fields are located in their region. A large Kurdish population also exists in eastern Turkey. Turkey does not want a large Kurdish population with such power because it fears a Kurdish uprising in their country.
    * The Threat of a Communist Resurgence. The failed policies actually made communist nations bolder and richer. Now China and Russia are holding joint military exercises. Hugo Chavez of Venezuela is propping up Fidel Castro because he got richer with the higher oil prices. North Korea is creating a nuclear bomb. But in Iraq we could not find even one firecracker and two matches. We did not even find a rock to throw.
    * Religious Leaders. The leaders advocate war, mock peace, accepted torture as being a necessary evil, advocate assassinations and the bombing of the property of other religions. These are the same people who will enforce religion under a brutal regime.
    * Private Army. One troubling development is the use of private armies who are accountable to nobody for their crimes. These armies will be turned against our own people. The church that used other armies may find that control of these businesses may be in their best interest just the business of public opinion and pundits seems to populated with its members. Blackwater’s CEO and his family financially support the Christian Coalition and other very conservative Christian groups.
    * War with Iran. This is a copy of the war between Babylon and Persia that caused the fall of ancient Babylon. Reports now show that there is a “proxy war” between the USA and Iran. The USA cites development of nuclear weapons and supplying weapons which are killing American soldiers as a reason to strike openly.
On 27 September 2007, the senate declared that the Iranian Republican Guard and Quds force are a terrorist organization by a vote of 76 to 22. In retaliation the Iranian parliament called the American army and the CIA terrorist organizations on September 29.

“We, the representatives of great Iranian great nation condemn the aggressions by the (U.S. Army), particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan, and call on the United Nations to intervene in the global problem of U.S. prisons in Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib and secret jails in other countries,” the statement said.

  9. `Don’t forget to stop the Dark Master while your at it

Well, I am glad to see such a heathly discourse on this topic. I would call what we see the “wingnuts” doing here is an example of cultural fear. If Ray Ray wears something of a foreign culture on her body in an ad with something very domestic in the background then people will associate get confused about what our domestic culture is. Maybe it’s just the beginning of a downward spiral into covering our womens faces and honor killings. I see a findamental fear that American culture and values are threatened by challenges in whatever form. A challenge makes a culture stronger, not more weak. I want to live in America with Dunkin Donuts and Ray Ray; not Palistine.
We all live in a box called Amercian media. I guess that’s our culture in a way.
My central point is that those who write this style of article or make these style of comments are only showing they believe America is vapid of its own culture and any image/scarf/opinion that is not easily recognized is going to make some profound impact on our people. We are a strong country with a strong culture and most people with intelligence don’t need to worry about such nonsense.

  10. As a Jew, the whole Urban Outfitters hubub was nonsense. It’s a fucking scarf. Calm down. I wear a Goldwater 64 shirt. It’s ironic.

OH yeah and just wanted to add that i just came from vacationing in Paris and these types of scarves are “the item” right now.

they are everywhere. and i haven’t heard a peep of controversy about it (although i might have missed it).
    SO get over it.

  12. Flap: I hate to admit it, but I’ve never been inside a Starbucks either. I keep expecting to see Lorne Greene behind the counter. And, really, if I were to go to a “coffee shop” I’d expect somebody in very bohemian attire to be giving a poetry reading.

    I went to a Dunkin’ a while back, but it wasn’t self-serve. I can’t stand that.

Cheryl: Just going for a chuckle, really. What else can you do with an issue like this, heh.

Epiphany: You really like the scarf? It looks kind of tattered to me. But I guess that could be kind of bohemian. Do you do poetry readings? Heh.

Eric: “We all live in a box called American media.” True, and some folks in that box make their living by inventing controversy wherever the opportunity appears.

Saying the scarf “stands for murdering Jews” is like saying “all Palestinian people are jihadist murderers.”

I don’t know much about Palestinians. But I know this: everyone in New York is not a member of the mafia. A lot of Italian New Yorkers, believe it or not, are not members either. And some of us have never even met a made member. (Well…probably not.)

  13. Yeah, pffft, it’s only a friggin scarf. And it’s Rachel Ray’s stylist fault. Whatever he or she says is in, then it is in. Rachel has no control over that, all she wants to do is make sure she looks good.

So yeah, get over it. And I have seen them everywhere, as a matter of fact, there’s one on my living room floor, my wife must have dropped it or something.

    sheesh.

  14. ummm, to be honest, I gotta go get me that scarf, I love it!

  16. One last thing. Vickers crashed out and cost me points in the Yahoo! Fantasy NASCAR race, a much more important matter, and bigger of an offense than some tv chef’s scarf. This is truly a sad day for America. I was set to get a really good score, too. Damn it!

  18. Dunkin’ Donuts has said it’s just a black and white paisley scarf the wardrobe person bought at a retail store. Gawker has pictures of McCain’s daughter wearing one of these “terrorist scarves” too.

Malkin and Johnson are two of the most hateful and delusional wingnuts out there. They should be embarrassed.

  19. I don’t think it’s THAT big a deal…Rachael Ray never struck me as being very ideological, anyway. Gosh, nowadays it’s probably best to keep your mouth shut when it comes to politics, you know? Unless you get filthy rich or you’re paid to give political commentary, you’re opening yourself up to get criticized by probably half your fans.

Imagine if someone like Ray took a hardline stance on abortion or something? Half her followers would be likely pissed off.

By the way, do you call her a cook! Chef? TV food personality? What is the correct name for her? “Food diva” maybe? :)

  20. Oh man, if they think this is bad they’re really going to hate the late Michael Vale Kufi commericals.

  21. Y’know, some of our soldiers overseas wear the keffiyah or whatever. It keeps the dust out of their mouths.
So Malkin, are our soldiers terrorist supporters then?

  22. AgentX~ AWESOME POINT!!! You should email her.

Michael~ I heard Malkin on Glenn Beck once, but other than that I had no idea who she was and what she stands for. After I saw your comment I did a little research on her… And got caught up on last year’s feud between her and Geraldo. That woman is selfish and narrow-minded as hell.

You are such a rebel!!! I bet you’re an aquarius. :-) I love it. :-) :-) At Starbucks, I prefer the Caramel Macchiato, but during the winter I get the Pumpkin Spiced Latte, skim milk, no whip. IT’S DA BOMB!

You are good Cheryl, you are really, really good. DAMN! 8-O lol! :D

  25. I don’t even watch Rachel Ray’s show. I dont even like her wardrobe. She’s too short to wear anything…but has a big annoying face…lol.

I do not mind the scarf because honestly, I do have one just like that lying around here but oh well.

  26. Also, Johnson did not finish. I wound up with 258 pts.

  27. Epiphany~ I study astrology. You’re a very strong Aquarius, too. Have you ever had a natal chart done? If not, google “free natal chart” and get one done. You need your exact time of birth, place of birth, and date of birth. I can do it to if you want, I have my own software. I wouldn’t be surprised if you had a lot of Aquarius in your chart (meaning that there are other planets in Aquarius, instead of just the sun).

  28. WFG~ Not sure if I’m supposed to congratulate you or feel sorry for you…? I’m not hip on the gaming scene.

  29. I googled what you said Cheryl and there are quite a few of them! And thank you for your offer too.

I am going to try a few of them such as Chaos Astrology which offers a 15-18 page report. Looks interesting. I know Aquarius is the Water Bearer or the Humanitarian. I like to read horoscopes sometimes but I usually don’t take it too seriously. I know that there are astrologers who are much more serious about the subject and go deeper into it as opposed to the “pop” astrologers out there.

I still think that’s amazing that out of 12 signs you picked the right one.

  33. “Keffiyehs were originalliy worn by Palestinians, but have become fashion accessories without political meaning.”

Horse pattooey! Most of the moonbats at the protest in DC last year were wearing them en force; that was a deliberate political statement which told me “we’re taking the side of Jihad along with the palestinians.”

Sadly, most of those who wear Keffiyeh think they’re “cool” and know not the true meaning behind this symbolic item of clothing. If they did, and were patriots to the United States, they’d rip that rag from their bodies in a heartbeat.

  34. From now on, in order to be culturally correct and so as to not offend anyone’s patriotism or for that matter anyones’s sensibilities by something I might be wearing, like a scarf, or the color of something, not to mention wearing and mixing different fibers which I know offends God according to the Bible, I will no longer be wearing clothes, fashion accessories or jewelry when I leave the house to walk the streets in my weary quest for hours and hours each and everyday trying to convince total strangers to have abortions and burn American flags. Followed by a poetry reading.

This will also save me lots of time in the morning and tons of cash.

  38. Mr. Sardonicus, I have never seen any nude pics of Rachael Ray but about 5 or 6 years ago I did see pics online of Rachael in somewhat suggestive poses wearing very little, taken in a kitchen. There was one I think of her posing on top of the kitchen counter wearing nothing but a cook’s apron.

I searched 2 days ago but couldn’t find them. They don’t seem to be online anymore. The reason I saw these pics in the first place was, at the time I had three male friends with a huge crush on her and one of them had very happily found these pics.

Sorry about that. There are still nude pics of Dr. Laura Schlessinger online if that makes you feel any better. :D

Hey! I said not to read this!

Cheryl – Wow. This is pretty involved and complex. These 2 sites obviously take it very seriously with all kinds of mathematical things. Many many pages including the 9 houses and house cusps and such but also things like Sun Trine Neptune, Sun Opposite Pluto, Sun Semisquare Moon, Sun Sextile Mars, Sun Semisquare Venus, some of that in the other planets as well. I haven’t read all of it but alot of it is right on the money as well as some very very specific things … it’s almost creepy.

    Sun in Aquarius
    Moon in Capricorn
    Mercury in Aquarius
    Venus in Capricorn
    Mars in Aries
    Jupiter in Cancer
    Saturn in Scorpio
    Uranus in Cancer
    Neptune in Libra
    Pluto in Leo

Ascendant or Rising sign is Leo

Yep. Cover your eyes whenever you see an opposing opinion. Move on, there’s nothing to be seen here! That’s another great hypocrisy by the left – you’re supposed to be “open to all ideas, regardless” but you put on your blinders whenever someone disagrees.

  43. I wouldn’t call Rachel Ray a tool of Jihad. I’d more call her a tool for the left.

To the commenter on Dunkin’ Donuts coffee – bingo, you’re absolutely correct. Their donuts are greasy as well.

  44. Steve, calling Rachel Ray a “tool for the left” is possibly why some people may skip through your posts.

  46. WFG~ Scorpio or Virgo.

E~ Your post is funny, but don’t worry, boo. I know it seems like it’s really personal info, but it’s not really. Looking at this by itself doesn’t tell anyone your date of birth, for instance. I’d need to know the exact degrees of every planet and point to figure that out. And of course your name and place of birth and all that… there’s no way to figure that out.

Hey, everyone else who wants to should do this, too!

  47. For Epiphany~
“This is pretty involved and complex.”

It’s so much fun, though! And the more you read about it, the easier it is to understand.

I see why we get along so well!!! For instance, Mercury is the sign of communication. You and I both have Merc. in Aq. Your moon (inner emotion) and my sun (basic personality) are in Cap, which helps us to always understand where the other is coming from.

With your Sun in Aquarius and Mars in Aries, I TOTALLY understand how you sometimes get so passionate in your posts here. LOL!

  48. Sorry, wrong on both.

  49. Probably won’t be around through the night, so I’ll skip the guessing. I’m a Leo.

  50. If you do your natal chart I can pretty much guarantee that you have other planets in Scorpio or what’s called the 8th house. You tend to be very secretive, which is why I think of Scorpio.

Saturn is in 23 Degrees Virgo.
Uranus is in 21 Degrees Scorpio.

  58. Great! thank you, Dunkin’ Donuts, for supporting the sensitivities of all patriotic Americans who opposed Ray wearing the Keffayeh….they pulled the ad. I sure support this move, because that scarf represents hate, murder, and Islamic terrorism.

Damned liberals who wear this scarf can go to hell.

Some of the 9/11 hijackers wore Keffayeh. And, regrettably, those scarf-wearing thugs also murdered 8 of my friends at the Pentagon, where I was stationed at 18 months earlier, so yes, emotions run high whenever I see the ignorant people who wear this, and have no idea of the symbolism behind it.

  59. Ha ha, WFG! I told you, man! :-D Uranus doesn’t really count b/c it spends a lot of time in each sign. But Jupiter and Saturn, especially Saturn in Virgo… Makes you want to pay A LOT of attention to detail. Did you have any planets in the 8th house?
