Woman Has Stroke, Finds bliss

May 26th, 2008, 11:59 AM EDT

Jill Bolte Taylor was a Harvard brain researcher when she had a stroke that disabled the left side of her brain. She lost functioning having to do with ego, analysis, and judgment.  She lost her sense of physical boundaries, experiencing a sense of inter-connectedness.  Her everyday worries were gone, and she lived in a field of shimmering energy.  Her new life goal is to teach others how to reach nirvana, something she can do on command by being in touch with the consciousness of her brain’s right hemisphere and “be one with all that is.”  She wrote about it in My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey.

Taylor’s 18-minute address to the Technology, Entertainment, Design conference in February explains the whole thing, and has become somewhat of a sensation.  The question for us is, can we each, at will, access the part of our brains that bring us joy?

  1. Ohhhh how I wish how I wish how I wish…

Someday I think it may be possible, but not in my time.

I don’t need to be in a constant state of bliss, but less everyday worries, less stress, anxiety and more joy in even the simple things would be nirvana for me.

Buddhism is also very helpful for achieving those things such as something called “mindfulness” which is staying in the moment where there is no past and no future. Full cognizance and appreciation of what is happening in the here and now.

  2. So is Taoism, Epiphany.

  3. I really don’t know anything about Taoism but I’ve heard good things about it. I’ll have to put that subject on my list of things to look into.

  5. Wow, Jill is some sort of heroe.

    Great video.

Also a book by Eckhart Tolle I would recommend for anyone who wants that inner leap from the current egoic consciousness to an entirely new one.

It pretty much teaches you to guide yourself to a new consciousness to learn to live and breathe freely. You’ll learn to appreciate the “now” and feel better and at ease with yourself and your surroundings. It is a hell of a good book. It is on my wishlist and conveniently waiting for me at the Barnes & Noble bookstore. I have been borrowing my friend’s but I am only waiting on my next paycheck. =)

  6. oh yes, it’s
