CIA Lawyer On Torture: Only If The Detainee Dies
Our beloved Pentagon ignored treaties and played chicken in order to abuse detainees. Pentagon lawyers came up with a list of abusive tactics like stress positions, sensory deprivation, sleep disruption, waterboarding and slapping. These techniques were approved by Donald Rumsfeld against the advice of military services lawyers. Prisoners who were treated harshly were hidden from the International Committee of the Red Cross, which was there to monitor conditions as laid out in the Geneva Conventions. And here’s what consitutes “torture” according to one CIA lawyer:
A senior CIA lawyer at the meeting, John Fredman, explained that whether harsh interrogation amount to torture “is a matter of perception.” The only sure test for torture is if the detainee died.
“If the detainees dies you’re doing it wrong,” Fredman said.
