John McCain: “It’s Tough” To Be Proud Of Our Country”

June 18th, 2008, 7:55 PM EDT

Will he get the same kind of attention as MIchelle Obama for having said this at a virtual town hall event?”

How can I be proud of my country?” (a questioner) asked.

Get it – he was mocking Michelle Obama and her statement earlier this year that her husband had for the first time in her life made her proud of her country.

Well, McCain either missed the joke or decided to ignore it and answer the question literally…

“I’ll admit to you that it’s tough, it’s tough in some respects,” McCain said, seeming to lend credence to Michelle Obama’s observation.

  1. Michelle who? What? She said what? When did that happen? Well of course I’m proud of my country!

    Damn right I am!

  2. I hope this gets more attention, but thanks for reporting it Big A.

  3. The stuff people get upset over. Oy.

  4. So Michelle isn’t a Pollyana. Big deal, and the right wing should be critical of McCain as they are of her.

  5. following the bush admin. i think mc cain was choosing his words kindly about this subject. I would have said alot of F&S words when describing how the gov runs this economy / country

  6. My bet is that he missed the joke, rather than ignored it.

  7. Well, it might be tough to be proud of this country at the current time, but at least he is and always has been proud of it. More then I can say for Michelle Obama.

  8. Nicely played Alan, nicely played.

  9. Did I miss something? Is it in the Constitution that we have to be proud of our country at all times?
Sounds a little fascistic to me…
I’m with Michelle, and I’m glad she said it: because she’s a hell of a lot more honest than most people. Sorry it’s not “politically correct”.

  10. McCain qualified it: “in some respects”!
Michelle did not (until later): “for the first time in my life” with NO qualifiers!

The “gotcha” game is stupid, though, so if Michelle Obama has not had a history of making similar statements then I take her at her word that she made a mistake or it was supposedly in a political context.

  11. Sky,
I do not care what is politically correct and what is not. Political correctness has ruined this country. What I do care about is a first lady who has problems being proud of her own country. I have a colossal problem with that. If you too have not been proud of this country then I will say to you the same thing I have said about Michelle Obama, you are ignorant. All it takes to be proud of this country is to look at the world and how other countries operate. To look at the young 18, 19, and 20 year old men and women being away from their families for 18 months, showering out of canteens, sleeping on the sand next scorpions, and coming home maimed and in body bags all so you can enjoy the right to be ignorant and even worse open up your mouth. It is people who are not proud of this country that are destroying it. If you are not proud of this country how about you pack your bags, move to another country, and become a citizen there. Maybe you will be able to be proud of another country.

  12. Sky,

You said “Sounds a little fascistic to me…”

You obviously are not in tune to the definition of fascism, let alone discuss it. Perhaps you should follow the advice of Karma and move to another country. If you question the validity or sanctity of our Constitution, may I suggest that you move to upper Volta or Sierra Leone, where you will find like-minded Socialists like yourself.

It’s okay for Liberal Socialists to opine and “dissent”, but when you start questioning our constitution, it’s time to start packing your bags with a one way trip ticket.

  13. Can anyone comment on this:

How can Michelle Obama claim she’s proud of her country now, and then bring her kids into a church that decries whitey and says “God Damn America” in sermons?

Where is the moral responsibility from this mental giant who wants to be the first lady?

And, who in their right mind would even consider voting for Obama, who is equally morally irresponsible as his wife, by letting their children listen to that garbage?

  14. Steve,
It’s not garbage, it is the “truth”. At least to them and a lot of people in here.

  15. *talk amongst yourselves*
    oh yeah, you are

  16. Sky~ I totally agree with you. We should be able to openly express our feelings for our country. Screw politically correct, loving and polite honesty is what’s needed.

Karma~ I’m glad to see you back with us! :0) I understand where you’re coming from. I’m a military brat, so that truly helps me identify with the soldiers. My dad served in the first Gulf war, my sister in this one. I do just want to say that just bc you’re not “proud” of America doesn’t mean that you have to move. Maybe people choose not to move because they love the geography, or their parents and other family members are here, or they love their job. A lack of pride does not automatically produce hate.

All this talk about being “proud” of our country makes me wonder what that means… No sarcasm, I’m 4 real.
