McCain Ignores Iowa Request To Stay Away During Flood Recovery

June 20th, 2008, 12:05 PM EDT

Governor Chet Culver was concerned that McCain’s presence would divert resources, including law enforcemnet, away from the flood recovery effort.  Although McCain gets Secret Service protection, local law enforcement is also involved with security for high-profile politicians.  Obama cancelled his planned trip there.

  1. No doubt that the McCain campaign or at least his surrogates will spin this to make it look like Obama is the bad guy for not showing up.

  2. This ain’t no Katrina moment, but McCain sure would love to have the ability to contrast his response to Bush’s fly over. I kind of feel sorry for McCain. He’s going to be forever remembered as a “Speed Bump to History.” Bush derailed his “Straight Talk Express” and now healing is demanding Real Change instead of Spare Change.

  3. Michael, I’m sure they will.

I’m feeling bad for McCain. It’s like he has to play “keep up” with Obama’s youthful and idealic physical strength. Notice that he’s not wearing a suit. Baseball cap, rolled up shirt (symbolizing that he’s casual and that he’s ready to get his hands dirty), and bottle of water (ready to hand that bottle of water to a thirsty citizen who’s been working in the sun, or to quench his own thirst after contributing to the physical labor).

Poor John. Doesn’t matter how hard he tries, he’s not going to be able to compete with the image of Barack shoveling dirt in Illinois.

  4. here we go again !!!

KATRINA part 2 I see george bush is right on schedule with the 1st aid/medical supplies and mobil home /shelter. Maybe most of iowa should have had flood insurance?

I say keep the IOWA CAUCUS going alive and well !!

and keep this kodak moment for the next election… PAY BACK IS A BITCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Feel bad for McCain? Are you kidding me? Oh dear. I think the compassion is a little misplaced here. No, I don’t feel bad for McCain. He was told to stay away and Obama did the right thing. The only people I feel sorry for are the people of Iowa. This is NOT the time to do a photo-op at the expense of people who are really and truly suffering. Not good at all.

    Big Sigh.

  6. I’d tell McCain to secure his own ass, my local resources are busy saving lives and helping those in need! And if you set up any road blocks for his visit they will be promptly bulldozed.

  7. Michael,
Like the Obama campaign would never spin something to make it look like McCain is the bad guy? Please. How about all politicians are lieing swine, and none of them are above playing dirty to get votes.

  8. At least the people of Iowa aren’t shouting things when they get off buses like “git that warm ass bottle outa ma face mofucka, where’s the cold cokes” as one guy did down in New Orleans when he was evacuated….

At least the people of Iowa didn’t bitch and whine blaming Bush or whitey on the weather.

  9. DB: Did you read the story at all?

The Gov. made his statement, but the local people said there would be no disruption. And since McCain provides his own security , he didn’t need the locals..

That was all in the story.. which your statement makes clear you didn’t read.

Even though I had the displeasure of reading this disgusting comment, at least I have to pleasure of knowing that I am not a racist or a bigot like you are.

  11. You really are a disgusting pig “Steve Harkonnen”. Why don’t you crawl back into the slime from whence you came and from where you were probably spawn.

  12. E~ Ditto.

    Where you been, girl?

  13. Hey Sweetie! I have been inundated this week with work, appts, errands and natural disasters. I am so incredibly exhausted and stressed out. Hope I don’t fall asleep before Alan’s program is over tonight. Alan always makes me feel better.

On Sunday, here in NYC we has 4 separate HUGE thunderstorms. Strange weather for NY. And as a result of a broken pipe in my building it was literally raining in my apt. I got flooded. Now they have to replace part of my kitchen. They were in here replacing the pipe on Tues/Wed for the entire apt. line and doing so in my closet. Everything had to come out (it’s a huge closet) so now it looks like a disaster area in here.

How are you doing and how’s your little boy? :)

  14. Wait, wait, why do we IMMEDIATELY label people as racists or bigots or evil just because they make stupid or insensitive comments?

Have any of you heard Don Rickles? He makes very insensitive comments (insults and stereotypes pretty much every race) but he’s a genuinely nice guy and one of his best friends is actually a black guy I recently found out. It’s all about intent.

  15. @flap

You’re probably right to an extent. On the internet and when you don’t know the people you’re talking to it’s a lot easier to place a label on them. On the other hand, that doesn’t excuse their comments.

  16. Agreed, I appreciate your comment Michael.

  17. So the fact that the people of Iowa are actually taking care of evacuating their people unlike the people of New Orleans, and the fact that their levies broke also and they didn’t immediately blame the ‘white government’ for blowing them up, and someone points out the hypocrisy of it makes them a racist? New Orleans’ citizens did what they have been told to do by 40 years of liberalism, sit back and let the government take care of things for you, while the people of Iowa are trying to bail themselves out. Both are equally horrific tragedies, but I believe mindset and approach to problem solving (hardwork and doing yourself versus expecting to be taken care of by a ‘cradle-to-grave’ government) is the lesson that should be extracted from this. And because I point out this hypocrisy, without mentioning race once, does that somehow make me a racist? I’m sure some liberal will find a way to connect the dots, and I can’t wait to read it.
