Guns And Roses Vs. Ted Nugent

June 27th, 2008, 12:32 AM EDT

On our weekly Friday Night Free-For-All we’ve been using Guns and Roses’ Anything Goes ever since Ted Nugent went on an ugly rant against Barack and Hillary that was neither clever nor entertaining.  Just ugly.

We had been using Ted’s Free For All as our theme music, but that was discontinued after Ted would not come on radio with me to discuss his ugly display.  He finally came on Thursday night and discussed his mindset as a performer versus his comportment during a political debate.  We still disagree, but we did have a good dialogue about it.  Now the question is: Anything Goes or Free For All?

  1. Alan, I thought Ted needed to apologize before you started using his music again. Or at least not smell like dead animals anymore.

    I did not hear him apologize… don’t be a hypocrite, Alan ..

  2. i’m not familiar with nugent’s music. i’m happy with the guns n roses thing, plus aimee says she prefers it. i trust her opinion!

  3. Nomad…it wasn’t so much about a formal apology as much as it was about being willing to discuss it.

  4. Ted has turned into a very nasty cartoon character, like Hank Jr. His base of support is gun carrying, radical rednecks, and this is comming from a gun tottin’ Hillbilly; which can give you my frame of refrence.

The Spooge deserves no respect. And I love venison, so I aint one of Teds’ usual haters.

So even though I cant stand Axel Rose stick with the G&R.

And never have that moron on the show ever agian, the collective should practice planned ignoring on these “Fireeaters.” Like your buddy Hannity.

    My two coppers.

  5. Alan said many times that Ted needed to say he was sorry in order for Alan to use his song again ..

  6. Why limit it to just two songs? Why not some other choices, like the Beatles “Helter Skelter”. Or Quiet Riot’s “Metal Health” ? Other suggestions, fans?

  7. stay with the current theme.

  8. i 2nd metal health

  9. Was Ted really a Vietnam draft dodger?

Draft dodging: something “boys of the right” often have in common.

  10. Unless he’s military and in uniform, I don’t think Ted is supposed to be offering the hand salute shown in the photo to anyone.

As a civilian, Ted is supposed to be holding his hand over his heart to show respect for our flag. Even if Ted was in uniform, his hand salute is sloppy. The thumb and fingers are supposed to be in line and the forearm, wrist and hand held straight.

Turning “Old Glory” into a shirt is kind of disrespectful and silly, too. Since we don’t make clothing in the USA anymore, what are the odds Ted’s flag shirt was “made in China”?

    Summer soldiers and sunshine patriots.

  11. Alan…

I loved the Nugent theme, irrespective of politics! The G&R theme obviously fits because of the words but doesn’t pack the same punch to me. Nugent’s theme is more in-your-face…I really liked it and I was sad when you felt it needed to be changed.

If you are at least partially satisfied with Nugent’s radio visit then I implore you to bring back the old theme!!

  12. OH…here’s a thought…I dislike Tim Robbins’ politics but I loved him in the Shawshank Redemption. I don’t think you’re being a hypocrite or kowtowing by playing his music.

GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC! IT’S A GREAT THEME FOR YOUR FRIDAY NIGHT FREE-FOR-ALL!

  13. “Free For All”? Ted who? Don’t remember either.

    “Anything Goes”. Right on.

Also, I think the current version of the show “theme” isn’t quite as good as the one I used to hear on WEVD, and I’ve felt this way since at least 2001, so I’m pretty much convinced I’m settled in my opinion.

  14. I disagree with Ted’s politics but the man rocks and his tune “Free For All” rocks especially. I vote for it.

  15. Alan, Flap and I differ on this point. I dont care how good the songs fits the theme of the show, it’s principle. The man (Ted) is a hate monger.

I really hate doing this because Ted was a step in my personal musical progression, being a bass player I admit that he had great bass on his records. But that does not mean that I will tolorate anything Ted says; and just take it with a grain of salt. thats’ (just Ted he’s a wild man) Not anymore!

You must toe the line on Ted Alan.

Thats the problem with this country, people get a pass far to often: Bush gets a pass, congress gets a pass, the supreme court gets a pass. The only people that do not get a pass are the poor.

I know I’m one of them.

    But I’m not bitter. ;P

  16. Ted is a has-been and his antics make him a clown. Never cared much for his music and his ‘politics’ are more grandstanding the anything else. Ban his music from the show…I suggest as a replacement something like: “Annie Get Your Gun”…you know, from the musical.

  17. Common sense is starting to allow America to see that some people have wrapped themselves in the flag to hide the fact they have little talent and nothing really creative to say. What will Ted Nugent be remembered for…Cat Scratch Fever? Can you imagine how sick he is of hearing the crowd request that song? Talking about guns is necessary to avoid the reality that his music career ended long ago. Take the flag away and he’s nothing important and he could be a hater, sexist, or racist. It’s amazing what people can get away with saying hiding behind a flag. Didn’t the Two Live Crew try to do this and they got arrested? Maybe that should be your new theme song? It would really po some conservatives.

  18. They both suck…

  19. Since we’re on the topic, does anyone have a clue about the bumper tune that’s often replayed, and which features a really funky sort of harmonica…?

  29. I vote for “Anything Goes”. It’s a better song.

  30. “guns and roses is just elevator music on steroids.”

I agree completely. “Anything Goes” is MUCH better! Who gives a care about politics? The music is better…it is what it is.

  31. Ted should be remembered for appearing on the “Day 51″ video about Waco.

Axl is remembered for throwing his microphone across the stage having a fit.

    Play neither.

    Find something else to play.

  32. you know what’s funny about hannity’s music? his theme song is “independence day” by martina mcbride. the song is about a wife who is physically abused by her husband, and she shoots his ass on the 4th of july. it’s sung from the point of view of the daughter, who is sent to a “county home”, aka “orphanage”, after the blow up. hannity just plays the chorus of the song, but it’s interesting he would chose this without thought of the implications. i’m all for self-defense, so i don’t have any problems with the song. just doesn’t seem like something the ultra-conservative, always deditcated christian hannity would play.

  33. he probably uses it to evoke 9/11

  34. I Like the G’N'R anything goes for the free for all.I do miss the rage against the machine bumper music though..

Strangers in the Night – Frank Sinatra

Let the Eagle Soar – sung by John Ashcroft

Theme from “2001 A Space Odyssey”

God Bless America – Kate Smith

  36. Let the eagle soar,
    Like she’s never soared before.
From rocky coast to golden shore,
    Let the mighty eagle soar.
Soar with healing in her wings,
As the land beneath her sings:
    ‘Only God, no other kings.’
    Let the mighty eagle soar.

  41. I say go back with Ted’s song. No, he’s not PC and if more Americans were willing to speak their minds instead of trying not to offend anybody we’d all be better off.

Alan- how many people do you delight in offending on an average night? Give Ted a break.

  42. Alan – no way would Sly approve of any continued rejection of Nuge. Expect a phone call Monday morning if we hear GNR…

    Morgan

  43. Alan are you insane? it takes you longer to make up with Ted than it takes me to strike up a friendship with ex girlfriends… by the way dude… i work 2nd shift and i hate it but your show gets me thru the night…….disagree with half of you say but its very cool listening to you at night man… cat scratch fever baby

  44. lol, john

  45. Seems like Nugent is an Oldgent and he ain’t much of a gent either.

And if ANYBODY can have a guy, then all the people who absolutely SHOULD NOT have a gun are going to run out and buy some.

  48. speak for yourself. i have a thing for aggressive men.

    LOL

  49. Dear Alan,

I listen to your show quite often and heard the interview with Ted Nugent. Mr. Nugent laughed off his comments about Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi as “Hey man, that’s just rock and roll!” I’m sorry to say that you did not really confront him on that. It is one thing for someone to refuse to be “politically correct.” It is another for a man to publicly vilify women with whom he disagrees by referring to them in crude, sexual terms. I hope you don’t shrug off his behavior by playing his music.
