I apologise Cheryl. I’m a little (?) upset right now. I just got off an anti-Obama site where I was reading some absolutely repulsive racist comments. And then I come back here and read that email. Sometimes, it is just too much for me. Maybe because I am just too old to read this stuff anymore.
That emailer though, is to Jim Jones and David Koresh as Britney Spears is to Mozart. David Duke looks like a genius compared to that mentally defective creature. And I’ve seen what creatures like that can do to people when given the opportunity to let loose physically on someone.

Actually, Jim Jones and David Koresh were intelligent in that they were able to convince their followers to do something they would generally avoid. However, this guy is just nuts. We are all children of God, and I abide by what MLK said…judge a person by the content of their character. That’s about it! I teach college part-time and I bend over backwards to treat EVERY person with the utmost respect…doesn’t matter the color.
I can’t believe I even have to say this, but I am NOT trying taking away from the horrendous things that blacks have had to deal with in this country for so long, up until around 40 years ago. I’m not black so I can’t fully understand the struggle, and it’s a debt that can’t really be repaid.

Up until 40 years ago??? You think blacks haven’t had to deal with horrendous racial situations since 1968? Are you serious??? No I do not think you are a racist but you sure sound damned ignorant! I could tell you countless stories about racism that people I know have had to deal with. Not to mention the situations of blacks that I DON’T know. There have been many people who have been KILLED just in New York alone over the last 40 years just for being BLACK! Not to mention, beaten, raped, tortured and who even had their houses burned down! Where the hell have you been over the last 40 years! You’re a teacher and you’re truly unaware of these things?
Subtle racism? Like the landlords who won’t allow blacks to live in their buildings, like the boss who won’t hire a black person to work for them, yet these people seem very nice, very civilized and never use the word nigger. Like a sweet little ole lady who you would want for your grandma who is having a nice conversation with you, charming as can be and then the conversation turns and she suddenly says with honey dripping from her voice, “but I wouldn’t want a black to live in my neighborhood. I don’t like negroes, they’re dirty people.” Yes some people actually still use the word “negroes” or “colored people” to this day.
That’s actually not all that subtle, it can get alot deeper and more insidious than that.
Like a former friend of mine, who I never thought was racist until I heard him use the term “nigger rich”. I had some extra money and he warned me not to just blow everything too fast. He said, “hey hahaha don’t get nigger rich on me now”. I was shocked and said WHAT??? And then he started to reveal some very unpleasant feelings to me about blacks. End of friendship.
Or another friend who just seemed fine and dandy and then talked about getting “jewed down”. Then I find out that Adolf Hitler is a hero of his. You wouldn’t have known this person was like that until something slips. You have to scratch the surface sometimes.
No I don’t think you’re a racist. But sometimes, including myself, one can be insensitve to other people based on religion or race etc. I don’t think it’s always a matter of just being politically correct. Sometimes it’s just having good manners and really listening to other people’s feelings and their life experiences. Once you do, it alters the way you see the world and people.

Oh…and I just think that the “racism” card is played WAY too often in this country. Because certain white people want to self-segregrate, that is racist? Certain black people want to self-segregrate. Is that racist? I also think affirmative action is generally speaking bogus and completely inequitable.

What on earth does that question have to do with any implication of a politically liberal deficiency on your part? What I meant was, you acknowledged that many horrible things had happened up until 40 years ago. And I said, in so many words, that if you believe that you are ignorant! Because as a teacher and obviously as someone with a brain in his head who is knowledgable of national events and social problems, that it was incredibly surprising to me that you would be so unaware of horrors and severe abuses that have occured to African-Americans in the last 40 years since the assasination of Martin Luther King.
I realize it is sometimes difficult to communicate what one wishes to express by simply typing words on on a blank screen. Such words can come across as inadequate and confusing. I am also not the best writer so it is possible to be misunderstood. I was not being condescending to you in reference to you being a teacher. And alot of what you said was very admirable.
But. You really shouldn’t be so defensive. Although I am guilty of this myself sometimes. I guess we’re only human. At least we have THAT in common.
I will briefly address a few other things you said in my next post. Because of course I disagree with you. :) But I have to go for awhile.

Sorry…I did get defensive. You are like Alan Colmes, Epiphany…you often piss me off but I like you. You are very eloquent and make good points that I usually disagree with. I mean, good grief, Alan pisses me off all the time but I really enjoy hearing him. So I don’t mean to toss personal insults your way, and if I do I am sorry. You behave pretty well on these boards considering some of the people you have to deal with (such as me). :D
I misspoke: I see desegregation as a HUGE step towards equality for blacks. Not perfect equality, not a society without racism, but because of all the horrendous things that had been done prior, I see that as a watershed, so to speak. That’s all I was really saying. “Truly unaware” I objected to because though it implies that I am ignorant of inequities in our society. I know enough to know it’s a complicated issue and I’m not a sociologist or historian. But I sometimes get the feeling that many black people on the left side of the political spectrum feel that many conservative white people are racists because they don’t agree with things like affirmative action, reparations, etc. It ticks me off because I have always treated people as well as I possibly could.
Do you know who Malik Zulu Shabazz is? “New” Black Panther Party. I’ve listened to the guy, and I don’t view him as a racist, although many, many people would. I think people like Farrakhan cross the line because of some crazy statements, but having *too much* pride for your race and/or culture does not necessarily make you a racist. As for me, I don’t give a crap that I’m white. I’m Christian, American, and conservative. Anyway, perhaps I have too high a threshold before I will truly brand someone a racist in my mind. Sharpton and Jackson…I give them the same leeway though they piss me off. I don’t view them as racists, though they stir up trouble (to me) and tend to fan the flames.
I think some white conservatives do make the mistake of pretending they know too much about the black struggle or any other race for that matter. As both you and Cheryl have talked about, and provided examples, racism still exists. But on the other hand, life isn’t *perfectly* fair. I (and everyone else) have to deal with certain things in my life that are not race associated but are completely unfair. We should strive for the MLK vision of a colorblind society, but if you ever think you can rid people of all prejudices I think you’re deluded! Any prejudices I have I stifle. We all have them, so we all have to work to stifle them.
Perhaps I am naive, but I just don’t see any systemic “racism” problem that would prevent a black person from going to school or becoming extremely successful. Hurdles? Yes. Based on race? In some cases. Do we all have to jump hurdles of SOME sort in life? Yes. Fair? No. Completely solvable? Never. I personally disagree with affirmative action (generally), but to me that is a huge benefit. If I were black, I certainly would take advantage of it.
Judge people by the content of their character and treat them as you want to be treated…add in a dose of humor and humility and you have some pearls that I (and many other people) try to live by.

Dear “flap” and “Epiphany”,
Oh my god; please stop arguing and attacking each other while at the same time implying your not attacking each other! You both express your beliefs with passion and articulation but also are quite defensive with each other.
You both make good points and it is clear that you are both decent, intelligent and caring people. Although it is fine to politely disagree with someone by briefly making your point; what you guys fail to see is that you are really on the “same side”. It’s not about white vs. black, conservative vs.liberal, Democrat vs. Republican ~ it all comes down to decent people vs. ignorant people.
I view the root of the problems our country faces stemming not from racism, not from sexism, not one’s stance on abortion or homosexuality, not one’s religous views; but simply whether your a decent person or your an ignorant person. That is what creates the roadmap for how we conduct ourselves and provides the foundation which our children grow upon. So folks let’s redirect all that time and effort in a more productive manner and declare war on the ignorant people! Demand them to justify their irrational, hateful views and behavior. In the process of doing so; they might just be forced to learn something.
“Flap” and “Epiphany”: I will leave you with a quote from Billy Graham (I may not have the exact wording right, but it’s close), “If two people agree on absolutely everything, one of them is unneccesary”. I should point out that while I have always respected and admired Billy Graham; I certainly do not share every one of his viewpoints. Look guys, do you see what just happened? I have praised and honored someone who I do not neccesarily agree with.

Danielle…you better watch it or I’ll attack you as well. :-P I appreciate your comments.
However, ignorant and decent aren’t opposites. Ignorant means you don’t have knowledge. There are a lot of decent people out there who don’t have the education or insight to be able to understand *why* they believe what they believe. At both ends of the spectrum. Does that automatically mean they are indecent? Conversely, there are a lot of non-ignorant people who are morally bankrupt or indecent. Having lots of knowledge or education doesn’t somehow create finely-tuned moral understanding.
Furthermore, being uneducated or less educated doesn’t necessarily mean you are ignorant of a specific issue!
I like Epiphany, and as far as I can tell she likes me too. I may be a right-winger but I do care about people. I think TDro has pissed me off more than anyone else on this board…but I grudgingly even like him too. We’re all creations of God and therefore we should *try* to find redeeming aspects and goodness in everyone we interact with.

Oh, there are lots of culture wars going on in this country. A LOT of it stems from atheism vs. theism. To me, whether or not you acknowledge the existence of God really defines your worldview in so many different ways.

LOL, Danielle. I love Epiphany and have a lot of respect for Flap, so I’ve just decided to stay out of their debates! I don’t choose sides unless one of them says something really crazy like “I’m going to hunt you down and f’ing kill you!”. Fortunately, neither of them is psycho like that, so I’m safe staying out of it.

Ok,in the rush to send my e-mail I obviously did not use the most appropriate word. I certainly know that the definition of ignorance is the lack of knowledge. We all know that racism is more prevelent in less educated people; hence Obama’s low poll ratings in the white, uneducated voters. There are many people out there who will not vote for a black man solely based on the fact that he is a black man (same thing for a woman of any race). I agree that there can be uneducated people that are decent just as I agree there can be highly educated people that are less than decent. But one’s education or lack of education does not excuse the manner in which some people behave. Of course a lack of education or insight may make it harder for some people to fully grasp the understanding of why they believe what they believe. But nobody will ever convince me (not that I think you are trying to) that even a person with a limited IQ (of course excluding some individuals with a cognitive disability) is not capable of understanding and displaying proper manners and basic social etiquette.
In reading the original e-mail which started this discussion, it doesn’t take too long to formulate the opinion that this person is uneducated…. but there is clearly a bigger problem with this man than a lack of education. His overall mentality is based on pure hate (that or he’s just plain nuts ~ in which case I suggest a high dose of Clozaril)!
I guess the point I was trying to make with my original e-mail was that people are free to have different opinions on the many social issues that have been debated for years. And although I have very strong opinions on some of those issues, I see the bigger problem with society being the complete destruction of how many people fail to conduct their self with less dignity and grace than some animals do. More bluntly: If you wake up an asshole, it doesn’t matter if your liberal or conservative, pro-choice or pro-life, have a limited IQ or have a Ph.D, gay or straight, Catholic, Jewish or Agnostic ~ at the end of the day your still an asshole.
I would also like to comment on your second e-mail regarding acknowledging the existence of God, but I just do not have time right now.
How did I get myself pulled into this?!?!?
