• A singer was scheduled to perform the Star Spangled Banner before a Denver event – but sang the “Black National Anthem” instead! We’ll discuss the ensuing outrage.
Joe Horn speaks! Alan analyzes new statements by the Texas man who shot and killed two men that he believed to be intruders.

Responses to this post...

  1. Who the hell is Eric Cantor?

  2. Eddie Cantor’s brother?

  3. lol, I had forgotten all about the Black National Anthem. *hides head in shame from my fellow black Americans*.
Oh well, I assume they will forgive my transgression. Well, I bet it sounded nice at least. It’s a beautiful song. It’s a shame she didn’t discuss this with the people who were paying her, nor did she at least introduce her “artistic license”. Instead, she made a move that will give license to all kinds of “See black folks are out to get us” crap.

  4. Michael Steele for PRESIDENT! Class act.

  5. Michael called it for McCain! 10:24PM!

  6. Michael Steele doesn’t have a clue what he is talking about.

  7. Thankfully, no one will accuse the singer of a “Black National Anthem” of being racist.

  8. Seems he’s a VP consideration for McCain, and a Virginian.

  9. this is going to seem like a random question, but-

have any of you ever poured salt on a slug? i’m so sick of seeing them in my house and garden. i’ve caught 3 or 4 in my bathroom and flushed them down the toilet. tonight i saw 2 on my walls near my back door, and was worried they’d get into the house. ignoring my conscience, i threw some salt on one of them. it was gross. i feel bad bc i imagine it’s quite painful for the slug, and feel bad for giving it a painful death.

any of you ever done this?

  10. Alan, you said “God bless you”?! WHY ARE YOU TURNING YOUR SHOW INTO A THEOCRACY?! :D

  11. Down here in Tennessee, Cheryl, slugs get on my dog’s feeding dish all the time. I just fling them into the yard…and you’re so mean to salt them!

But I don’t even know if slugs feel pain…trying to remember what sort of nervous system they have.

  12. Yes, I have, and I don’t recall how I felt.

  13. Oh that’s horrible Cheryl. I would not deal well with slugs. Pouring salt on them, I think dissolves them like acid and that sounds pretty horrible too. Maybe some sort of exterminator that can get rid of them or can give advice on how ro get rid of them without salt?

We don’t have a slug problem here in nyc but then there are roaches, waterbugs, mice, rats, cellphones…

  14. Try pouring salt on the person using the cellphone, Epiphany…I think that may work. :-P

  15. i’ve been trying to look up whether or not they feel pain.

i feel like shit for doing it. i don’t have a problem with killing them, i just feel bad for giving it a really painful death. if it wasn’t so slimy and gooey i’d just step on it.

  16. http://www.pmra-arla.gc.ca/english/consum/slugsandsnails-e.html

Looks like they are irritated (but not killed) by sand so at least in my case that would be a good deterrent.

  17. ALAN, TALK ABOUT SLUG CONTROL ON THE AIR!

Isn’t that good for ratings…diversity of topics?

  18. I want to declare in public that if Senator John McCain would announce at a press conference that he would be willing to include in his plans as president a special decree banning all cellphones that I will switch my vote from Barack Obama to John McCain.

    Signed,
    Epiphany

  19. You think that’s something, Alan. I don’t even like our flag’s design. I am so unpatriotic.

  20. America the Beautiful is a great song…actually in some ways I prefer it.

GOD is mentioned FOUR times in America the Beautiful versus just ONE in the Star-Spangled Banner. How about that, Alan?

  21. Talking about the extended versions of both:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_spangled_banner
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_the_beautiful

  22. I do believe that “America the Beautiful” is a better National Anthem. The Star-Spangled banner invokes violence, whivh I really don’t think this country needs or wants to project! As for Atheists being bothered by “God shed His grace on thee”, they don’t seem to be to bothered by “In God we trust” on the currency. Alan, got to stop being so politically correct all the time. *smile*

  23. Luci, me thinks you have forgotten, or are unaware, of Michael Newdow.

Also, I am an agnostic and don’t want “In God We Trust” on our coinage.

  24. Work around the “God issue” in America the Beautiful?!

“Some potentially existent Higher Power may or may have not shed some grace on thee…or maybe it was just damn good luck…”

  25. Boy was that last caller whiney sounding.

  26. Cellphones and slugs. Difinitive proof there is no God.

  27. The song gives me a headache. Not the lyrics, the woman’s singing. I just the voice. My poor head.

  28. *I just cut off the voice; back on now.

  29. What’s the debate about this jazz singer? She was just plain rude. A beautiful voice and a lovely song but that was rude of her to do that. Rudeness has no color.

  30. New national anthem: “American Girl” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

  31. This Dixie Chick version’s giving me a headache.

  32. lol, WFG.

  33. this poor prejudiced woman is scared of Negroes. poor dear.

  34. I LOVE the Dixie Chicks! WFG has sensitive ears. :)

OMG IF BARACK OBAMA BECOMES PRESIDENT BLACK PEOPLE WILL BE RAPING KITTENS!

  35. The world needs to understand that only we Leos can do whatever the hell we please.

  36. I also hate MCR like crap.

  37. yeah, i agree that the lady should have just sang the damned anthem she was sposed to sing.

  38. Martha Stewart LMAO

  39. No. A KKK national anthem would be about black oppression.

  40. Cheryl, what station does Alan’s show come on in your area?

  41. I enjoyed that rendition by the Dixie Chicks…dang it.

  42. To each his/her own.

  43. funny internet graffiti (the first one is one of mine)

Thank God for Sudden Death Radio to teach Americans about CELL PHONE ETIQUETTE!

Overheard at the water cooler: “So, who are you voting against?”

I have murdered a trillion baby sperm since I was 12 years old!

  44. I saw that sperm one. I usually don’t check it. I’m the one that wished his Father a happy birthday on the 18th, btw. I did submit a new one recently. I’ll check to see if it’s up.

  45. If Obama is elected certain black groups like the NAACP will *probably* be listened to more and given more resources or access…but that’s not a bad thing. I couldn’t give a flip about any of that. To the winner go certain spoils.

But McCain will win, so it’s all moot. Muhahahahaha!

  46. No. No updates.

  47. New one recently. That’s kind of redundant.

  48. This isn’t American Idol, that crime against humanity, stop trying to sing the freaking song, people.

  49. McCain bans cellphones.

    I vote for McCain.

    My vote makes him president.

    Think about it John…

  50. i think that conservatives would flick the fuck out if they knew the lyrics that originally go with the tune used for The Star-Spangled Banner

    http://www.contemplator.com/america/anacreon.html

  51. Also should be banned;

All mycreditreport commercials on radio and tv.

  52. lol. u guys are killin’ me.

  53. JOE HORN IS A KILLER

  54. Fruit Loops should be against the law.

  55. yeah, but not Apple Jacks

  56. Today’s cereals aren’t sweet enough. Fruit Loops blow.

  57. Apple Jacks stink too. Bland as hell.

    Cheryl, see my question earlier?

  58. no, i didn’t see it. post again.

    joe horn is a MURDERER

  59. If Joe Horn has the right to kill people for stealing stuff at his neighbor’s house when he wasn’t in danger than why can’t I at least have the right to hit stupid rude people on the street?

  60. Apple Jacks used to have larger apple bits, and were much better. Low sugar monsters are ruining cereal.

  61. all 3 verses of Lift Every Voice and Sing, from Wikipedia

    Lift ev’ry voice and sing,
    ‘Til earth and heaven ring,
    Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
    Let our rejoicing rise
    High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
    Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on ’til victory is won.

    Stony the road we trod,
    Bitter the chast’ning rod,
    Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
    Yet with a steady beat,
    Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
    Out from the gloomy past,
‘Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

    God of our weary years,
    God of our silent tears,
    Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
    Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
    Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
    Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
    May we forever stand,
    True to our God,
    True to our native land.

  62. dickweed? psychic connection?

  63. I asked what station Alan’s show comes on in in your area.

  64. Awwwww Joe Horn has gone through much emotional and physical turmoil for murdering people.

  65. 1230am

  66. WTAR 790

  67. fuck Joe Horn. i’m so PISSED about this. why isn’t there some sort of activist group leading a charge to get his ass prosecuted? this was NOT self-defense.

  68. am

  69. epiphany~ have you ever contemplated messing around with a married man?

  70. oh, wait, i meant 850am WTAR

  71. WWRL 1600 AM

  72. i don’t think i have that station up here, W

  73. I hope she hasn’t.

  74. LOL Cheryl. Lots of times.

  75. i have. i couldn’t do it though. my damned conscience.

now, i met another guy at a party a few weeks ago. he and his wife have an open relationship, but i just wasn’t down with that. so i really wouldn’t be down with doing it when it was a big secret.

  76. but i find myself hoping that this other guy and his wife have an open relationship… lol.

  77. It’s too disrespectful.

  78. i’m on hold for alan right now. he should’ve gotten to me earlier, bc i’m starting to feel a buzz from the wine i just drank. :0)

  79. I KNOW, W. anyway, that was a woman to woman question.

  80. It’s not worth it Cheryl. The pain you and the wife will experience isn’t worth it no matter what.

  81. i agree. believe me, i do.

  82. I’m barely a man.

  83. Great call Cheryl! You got it all in.

Great voice. Sexy voice too! lol!

Do you sing? I’d like to hear Cheryl sing the national anthem.

  84. lol, W. you’d better stop saying that boy, you’re going to start believing it.

thanks, E. if only my sexy voice would help me reel in a man… :0(

  85. lol. i just read the rest of your post, E. i can’t sing anymore. i’ve done too much smoking, i’m afraid.

  86. Ask Alan to find a love match for you on the air. He used to do that often when he was on a different radio station years ago.

  87. Agreed, it is a sexy and pleasant voice. I wish I didn’t sound 12.

  88. Alan once tried to find a date for Joe the Woman Hater many years ago. I almost called.

  89. oh, GREAT idea!

did that last caller say something about “Georgia crackers”? that’s fucked up. i’m not down with racist remarks on either side of the fence.

  90. I’m too nervous to call. I don’t think I would be able to get any words out. I’m even to nervous to call during radio graffiti. Maybe one of these days. When I’m drunk.

  91. I’m not paying full attention, so I don’t know what he said.

  92. WFG, Alan said he was going to devote tomorrows show, all 3 hours to a discussion of the Olympics.

  93. i really hope he’s joking about the olympic stuff.

anyway, maybe you should get a good buzz goin and call the show. it’s not that bad.

  94. I’ve actually called a couple times. Once to compliment and plug Liberal Land, and once to recommend that a Muslim man who came to a Jewish man’s aid on a NY subway be a guest on Alan’s show. I’m kind of embarrassed by it, because I think I came across as patronizing, or worse.

  95. this guy sounds like a STRAIGHT HICK

  96. awww, shit… wish i knew it was you calling!

  97. Wait, did Alan respond to me for more than a half second? WHAAA??

  98. “a Muslim man who came to a Jewish man’s aid on a NY subway be a guest on Alan’s show”

GREAT IDEA! Now that man was a hero and it’s a great story!

  99. lol. preemptive strike. great point!

  100. I have anxiety. My heart races, and I speak in a mangled syntax. If you’ve seen my posts where I use words like “whereas” and “therein” then you know how I talk. But my grammar is worse when I speak.

  101. I’d called Muslims “them” and feel bad about that. The context was in how the story challenges the notion that “them” are all bad, as bigots claim.

  102. the more you talk in public the easier it gets

i’m sick of hearing people comment about joe horn when they don’t even know the damned story.

  103. alan is having a red eye moment

  104. alan colmes sex tape LMAO

  105. It wasn’t a male midget, it was me. I got 10% of the profits. Fun times.

  106. i told them not to give you any more than 2%. let me get those guys on the phone right now and chew them out.

  107. when’s internet graffiiti usually updated?

  108. we should outsource the administration.

    LOL

  109. i think they do it once a day.

  110. Well, i reference Michael Savage in mine.

  111. ok gotta go, i’m going to watch our sex tape again.

You can get it at all fine retail stores. $29.95 plus tax.

  112. I never go to public events and never attend sporting events. Also, I have never had to learn the lyrics to the national anthem, so why should I do it now? Besides, it is so hard to learn new songs at my age.
I personally would just sing a song that I know and hope everything turns out alright.

However in case someone says something, I had better come up with a good excuse, . I have it! I was trying to make a creative expression of my love for the country,… Yes that will work.

  113. Sing the National Anthem and a stadium full of people hear your name, but screw with the Anthem and you go nation-wide.

And, you know what they say, even bad publicity’s better than being ignored.

  114. RC~ i decided last night that this was some kind of publicity stunt. why else would she do something so damned ridiculous?

  115. There are many Americans who claim that there is no separation of Church and State in the Constitution. It may not say it directly in those exact words, true. Though the wording of the First Amendment creates a separation of Church and Government. Amendment 1: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Some religious conservatives use the words “freedom of religion,” to defend their argument for an American Theocracy. The words, freedom of religion, are not specifically in the Constitution either. The exact words are, “or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;” They all to often forget the establishment aspect and only concentrate upon the free exercise. T. Jefferson drafted the Bill of Rights and in a personal letter further expanded upon what he was referring to by restricting the Government from establishing or promoting religion. Jefferson said the First Amendment clause created a “wall of separation” between the Church and State. Given Jefferson’s own words on what he wrote in the Bill of Rights, I would argue that the issue is very clear pertaining to the interpretation of the First Amendment. Many Conservatives, even the so-called Liberal Barak Obama, fail to realize that Jefferson had to separate Church and State so that there could be religious freedom for all forms of conscience or belief. The First Amendment is a work of art due to the combination or sum of its factors. Free speech, free press, free assembly, redress of grievances, exercise of religion, and the absence of religion within Government all create Liberty, our Sovereign Rights, or the lack of State Tyranny over Individual Citizen.

  116. Joe Horn did not say, “Stop or I’ll shoot,” no rather he said, “You’re Dead.” That is not a warning: instead that was clear premeditated intent. There was no attempt to regain property, no attempt to see if lethal force could be avoided and there was no verbal warning to freeze or stop before firing. In fact he fired his first shot while saying, Bang, You’re Dead. That does not qualify as a warning. Plus the victims were shot in the back according to the State Medical Examiner. If they were a clear and present danger to his person or property I could see him using lethal force. Though the facts in the case and the 911 phone call show otherwise. He feels bad after the fact due to guilt. The guilt that comes with the knowledge that he acted out of malice. He knows that his actions were wrong. That is why he feels a heavy heart post-murder. Horn acted as Judge, Jury, and Executioner. He played the part of God and two people are dead by his hand over material possessions. I would ask Joe, was it worth it?

  117. Cheryl: I could believe that any kind of a serious artist gets so immersed in their art, and so obsessed with their own creative expressions, that they find it hard to view what they do through the eyes of the general public. And I think there’s a great many artists who simply don’t concern themselves with what anyone else might think of their work.

But, as you suggest, when the artist’s forum is a public event probably even the most obsessive artist can make the obvious calculation.
