Will Michael Vick Be As Saved As His Dogs?

July 7th, 2008, 12:01 PM EDT

Judge Henry E. Hudson did something unusual. Instead of ordering Vick’s 49 pit bulls put down, he ordered that they be individually evaluated.  As a result, all but two survived, 25 are in foster homes, and other are doing things like providing therapy to cancer patients.  Instead of names like “Homicide” and “Maniac”, they now have names like “Teddles” and “Sweat Pea”.  If dogs can change, can humans?

In a related story, perhaps humans who are attached to their pets more than to certain people in their lives aren’t so crazy after all.  Joel Gavriele-Gold, a psychoanalyst in private practice in Manhattan and the author of When Pets Come Between Partners, says, “Humans tend to be very disappointing – notice our divorce rate,” Gavriele-Gold said. “Dogs are not hurtful and humans are. People are inconsistent and dogs are fairly consistent.”  While, Matilda, a “pet and partners priest” and marryyourpet.com takes things too far, Gavriele-Gold says that in some cases, a pet is a good outlet for somene who is a control freak, and can exercise that trait on a pet rather than to a loved one.

In some cases, a pet can provide an outlet for more unpleasant traits, like a need to control others, a refusal to compromise or an inability to grant other people autonomy.

Gavriele-Gold described one patient as “a total control freak” who became a dog trainer.

“It worked out really well for him,” he said. “He was able to marry a woman who was totally laid-back, and he had no desire to control her because he was able to do it with the dogs.”

  1. Michael Vick is a piece of shit. I hope he’s been raped in prison. Vile, disgusting shitbag…

  2. fury~ you should consider anger management treatment.

i’m glad they found homes for most of vick’s dogs.

what the hell is with people who actually fall in love with animals? i looked up zoophilia when alan had that guy from georgia on (neal horsley i think). i just put “zoophilia” in google. i got a wikipedia article, and then a bunch of PORN sites. i checked one of them out. i was curious- sex with animals?! but the images made me heave, and i regret seeing them now.

  3. Dod’t liberals think its ok to get married to their dogs ? There is no end to the perversion in liberalland!

  4. Anonymous:
You must be confusing us with the conservative Republicans. You know – the “moral majority”, who sleep with prostitutes and look for BJ’s in airport mensrooms. Oh, by the way, I think it was televangelist Jimmy Swaggert who preferred beastiality.

  5. I think michael vick got what he deserved including losing a $10 million dollar GIG…ouch! with that being said mike will have a very hard time going back to what he used to do just like the animals he changed for life. Another classic case of “let the punishment fit the crime”

  6. “Dogs are not hurtful and humans are. People are inconsistent and dogs are fairly consistent.”

And this comes from a psychoanalyst whose days presumably are full of people who perhaps are not the most well-balanced and well-adjusted among us.

Any dog trainers or veterinarian care to weigh in?

Sure, dogs are great, but they’re not all Lassie.

  7. I predict the California Supreme Court will rule that it is legal to marry your pet. A whole new class of strange people will then move to San Francisco.

  8. Great to see that these dogs will survive. It always bothers me when dogs are ordered to be put down without really putting any effort into re-training them or finding them homes.

As for Vick, yes, people can change. I’m not counting on it though. He denied the whole thing until they found all of the dogs and equipment on his property.

  9. The purpose of prison is rehabilitation not vengence. Mr Vick deserves a chance to change his behaviors and to regret his horrid past behaviors towards man’s best friends. I for one wish him well on his recovery and a true change of heart.

  10. These dogs may have been retrained, but they are very territorial, unpredictable, and very ferocious. The slightest provocation could be deadly. I hope anyone who adopts one of these beasts keeps them far from children.

  11. I am far from owning a PETA membership but I love animals. We should do whatever we can to protect dogs and cats from people who abuse them. They provide such unconditional love and should be given that in return.

I tend to agree with the psychoanalyst…you can be a control freak with a pet and it’s not necessarily deleterious to the owner-pet relationship.

Vick’s crimes aren’t on the level of a serial abuser or killer (of humans), but it was pretty scummy and evil.

  12. Judge Hudson gets My vote for Man of the year! Why would any-one kill the dogs [and please notice that I don't use the words put down] ,when the crime was committed by Vicks? These Dogs deserve to live, and anyone that fights Dogs should be locked up in a very small room naked with 10 pit bulls after having a
bottle of A-1 sauce poured over their head!

  13. Icecream Bars for all the four legged friends in this picture !!

    such a good puppy

  14. I agree that the judge’s actions were commendable. But I guess I took it for granted that the dogs were just moved to another home or to the pet shelter thing. I had no idea that they just killed them all in situations like this.
