On Thursday’s Radio Show…

July 10th, 2008, 6:00 PM EDT

Congressman Dennis Kucinich tells Alan why he’s renewing his efforts to impeach President Bush.
Judge Andrew Napolitano explains why he’s so troubled by the Senate vote to back the White House on wiretapping.
• Are “Men at Work” signs sexist? PINK Magazine’s Founding Editor Cynthia Good thinks so. She’ll debate the Culture Campaign’s Sandy Rios.

  2. i bought my son 2 beta fish today. he just turned four. he named them bumblee bee and optimus prime. LOL

i’ll post a link to pics in a sec

  3. I’ve been seeing gender neutral work zone signage for going on twenty years, and it’s a rare day when I actually see a woman there in the work zone.

  6. Rep. Kucinich is a true American patriot, but this is too little too late. The damage has been done and we need to heal this nation with change. Sometimes crimes are committed in this nation that are legal because Congress choose to ignore the victims. No victim, no crime. Who is the “Bush Fly” and why was President Bush tired of swatting flies? He wasn’t swatting Bin Laden and I’m not whining.

  7. Bush violated his oath to protect and defend our Constitution ad the spineless Democratic leadership caved. Bush needs impeachment and conviction of high crimes and misdemeanors so that the next President, no matter his wrap the flag justification works within the laws and not as a dictatorial monarch! Go for it Dennis! Jail to the Chief!

  8. The only good impeachment would do now, aside from seeking justice, is that it would void presidential pardons.

  9. RC~ lol, man. he said that he was petting and tickling the fish. poor poor fishies.

  10. Cheryl, what a beautiful little boy you have! I really liked those photos and good luck and good health to his new friends.

Hey is that all your underwear in the background?

    lol :p

  11. Haha Alan said at the end of H&C that he rides the F train! Hey that’s MY train! Maybe someday I’ll run into Alan on the subway, that would really be so nice. I don’t think I could ever go over and say hello though, I would be much too nervous.

  12. He better be careful….those Beta fish are pretty aggressive.

  13. Women are liberated, they can do any job they please.

Why argue about what jobs women can do?

If a women is built for a job they should be able to do if they want to.

  14. Thanks for the compliment, E! He’s my handsome little baby.

Michael~ I’m much more concerned for the fish. My parents and siblings all took bets on how long the fish will last. For some reason my youngest brother (16) gave them as long as 2 weeks. My dad bet one day, I bet two. He’s already tried to feed them chocolate, and tried to dump the beta food in the bowls. He used a stick and the spoon in the picture to poke at the fish, or “pet” them as he put it. I’m doing my best to teach him to respect them and leave them alone.

  15. I’ve heard Sandy Rios so many times on the show and she is such a complete idiot! lol. I’ve seen some female construction workers here in NYC and they do just fine thank you! Strong and competant with no problem givin’ it to the sidework. LOL!

  16. regarding women fire fighters

  17. http://www.firefighternation.com/profiles/blog/show?id=889755:BlogPost:341177

  18. what the hell is “sidework”?

Givin’ it to the SIDEWALK! I wonder if they like to oggle men when they’re on a break. Probably not.

  19. Ohhh great article Cheryl! Thanks for that.

  20. epiphany~ i think that you and i are going to disagree on this particular issue….

  21. i’m calling alan in a few minutes. i just called but aimee told me to call back after kucinich went off.

  22. Cheryl, your boy is adorable!

“Mama, don’t let your babies grow up to be liberals…” :-P

  23. thanks!

e~ basically, i think that this issue with the construction signs is demonstrative of the more extreme side of feminism. similar to Mr. Price who flipped out about the use of the term “black hole” (on Alan’s other thread).

i don’t believe that women should be refused the opportunity to apply for a firefighting or police officer job. however, if they cannot pass the physical fitness test then they can’t be allowed in. men who don’t pass the test aren’t allowed in either. physical fitness rules cannot be relaxed, bc those rules are there to help ensure that the emergency personnel can help save lives.

  24. “Are “Men at Work” signs sexist? PINK Magazine’s Founding Editor”

When did we start letting women become editors of magazines?

    ((kidding))

  25. How is it extreme if 2 female construction workers are doing what they’re paid for and don’t want a sign that says “men working”? I don’t get that.

I agree with you 100% that if a woman or man can’t pass the physical requirements then, under no circumstances should they get the job as firefighter or cop. I don’t have a problem with that.

  26. damn it now it’s busy and i can’t get through

e~ i said that i thought we’d disagree on this one! :-) did the lady from PINK say that women construction workers were offended by the signs? if they don’t care, i don’t care.

  27. lol, Fury. i just saw your comment.

  28. Sorry Epiphany and Cheryl… :)

  29. And if they DO care? I would. Hmmmmmm? Me Woman Hear Me Roar. lol! :D

  30. epiphany~ don’t get me wrong- i support women’s rights. here’s a recent post from me on the “Ouch!” thread:

“She reminds me of King Leonidas’ wife in the movie 300. Did you guys see that? The end when she stabs that motherfucker… that’s a victory moment for women everywhere!”

  31. fury, did you see what i wrote about you- reminding me of the middle-aged guy in the bar bitchin’ about life?

  32. damn it the phone line’s are still busy. SHIT

  33. Didn’t see that movie but I think you wrote that in reference to Michele Obama. She has got a superb body. Great arms too.

  34. honestly, if i were a woman construction worker i wouldn’t care. i don’t take signs or statements about “men” or “mankind” to be offensive.

  35. This may sound horribly sexist, but I always thought one of the *benefits* of being a woman is that men often are the ones working in certain physically-demanding jobs.

That’s not to say being a man is harder…I think being a mother is the hardest, most important job in the universe. Seriously.

  36. E~ did you see Louie’s comments to Alan? oy vey.

  37. Well I would care because… I’M NOT A MAN! lol. I sometimes will say mankind but I usually say humankind.

“This may sound horribly sexist, but I always thought one of the *benefits* of being a woman is that men often are the ones working in certain physically-demanding jobs.”

That’s not sexist because it is a benefit sometimes. But when I was in better shape I did lots of demanding stuff and I actually enjoyed it. It feels good when you can do those kinds of things and not always have to depend on someone else. It’s a nice accomplishment to be proud of.

  38. i REALLY encourage you to see 300. it’s an AWESOME movie. it’s great for people with an understanding of ancient roman culture. in the beginning of the movie, the King makes a reference to the “philosophers and boy lovers” of Athens.

that last bit alan did mocking that man’s voice was HILARIOUS.

  39. That was funny, Alan mocking the idiot.

  40. if i could finally get through on the damned phone, one of the things i was going to say is that while i think this is an extreme display of feminism, i can’t speak for women older than me who have dealt with a level of sexism that i am not familiar with. thanks to epiphany, my mom, my aunts, etc. i can go to work without even worrying about a glass cieling. it’s just not something that i have to constantly worry about.

  41. http://www.politicalcompass.org/

    Political test my score:

    Economic Left/Right: -5.00
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.90

On the scale, I’m a Libertarian close to Gandhi, Mandela, and the Dalai Lama. Who’d a thunk it…

  42. fury~ I SAID did you see what i wrote about you?

  43. I understand how Louie feels, I know where he is coming from as they say but he is waaaaaaay off the track with Alan. Alan is an up front and proud liberal who is able to express himself beautifully and get right to the heart of the matter with pinpoint accuracy and without hitting someone over the head. He is also a gentleman at the same time, has real class and takes on more conservatives than anyone and does so respectfully.

I do have huge problems with H&C though and have not been watching it as much lately. Unfortunately I would have to agree with Louie on a few things concerning the tv show.

But if Alan is SO lame then why does he get so much hate mail from crazed hard right conservatives claiming all the usual garbage and even saying how dangerous he is? His liberal critics should read his hate mail.

  44. Cheryl ~ 300 is great. Hate to be a nit-picker, but the Spartans were Greeks. That line is about the boy lovers was odd because the spartans were homosexual too. The idea being that they would fight better to save their lover. This was before Christianity…

  45. Oh sorry just saw what you wrote.

    haha very cute. :)

I’m only 34 though not middle aged yet, but not far from it…

  46. Epiphany…talking about depending on people…if I ever have a daughter I would want her to never HAVE to depend on a man. Education, good career, etc.

I think being a mom, homemaker, etc. is fantastic (and optimal in my opinion), but things don’t always work out, not everyone gets married, and even if you get married the man can become a bum, etc. If I had a daughter I’d always want her to be able to take care of herself.

  47. i didn’t say that the spartans were roman. that statement was in reference to the philosophers and boy lovers line regarding athens.

i didn’t know that the spartan men got it on with each other! shit, as ripped as they all were i can’t blame them. and they spent so much time together, too.

this reminds me of a joke i heard a few weeks ago, at a party with some navy men. the navy gets sent out on their ships of course, and the trips are called being “under way”. so someone said, “it’s not gay if you’re under way”. LMAO

  48. flap~ how old are you, man?

  49. if you don’t mind me asking. i’m just curious.

  50. 29, unfortunately getting close to the big 30.

  51. HOW DARE YOU ASK MY AGE CHERYL!

  52. Cheryl I could tell you many stories about sexism and sexual harrassment that would make your head spin. It’s a horrible thing to experience. I’m talking actually about sexually criminal things that I experienced that caused me to lose my job. What one of my bosses did to me when I was practically a kid. I didn’t know what to do, who to go to back in those days and it made me feel absolutely worthless. It’s hard to get over trauma like that but in the end it can make you stronger and proud to have survived it all.

  53. lol

  54. Well when you talk about Spartan sexuailty, you need to understand that there was not penetration. It was sex but more like hand jobs and what-not.

  67. You’re only as old as you feel, Epiphany!

  72. Alan, EVERYTHING IS ABOUT ABORTION. Don’t be bored by the issue!

  73. lmao, dave. you need to quite while you’re ahead, man. lol

do any of you guys look like the men in 300? if so, i’ll be on a plane to your house tonight.

  74. Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t the Spartan same-sex stuff pretty much limited to younger males and a mentor.. oh I think it was amoungst military units too. i dotn know too much about it.

I liked 300 because of the theme of brave men , standing up to defend their way of life from the coming onslaught of what seemed to be an invicible foe.. and the craven politicians who woudld let thier country get destroyed if it helped their political career.

  75. Cheryl I look just like the men in 300, the big fat ones that are hanging out in Xerxes tent of love.

btw, epiphany~ i think that compliments embarass alan, and that’s why he doesn’t spend a whole lot of time on them. i get like that too.

  80. Cheryl, you’re 26 and NOT LIBERAL ENOUGH!

  81. wait- does “hitting the bottle” hurt my marketability? it’s just red wine. a glass or two a night. unless i’m partying with friends, in which case i’m a regular whino.

  82. So Alan is a Countdown fan huh? More power to him! :D

  83. Great call Cheryl! I would have to drink an entire bottle to get enough nerve to call Alan! Well done.

  84. this guy calling about the iraqis is a regular caller. anyone catch his name?

  85. Yay! Love Keith Olbermann – He The Man! lol!

  86. thanks, E. i knew you’d be pulling for me. believe it or not, as many times as i’ve called i’m still always nervous.

what kind of wine do you like to drink?

  87. Great call Cheryl! I would have to drink an entire bottle to get enough nerve to call Alan! Well done.
    ————-

Why would calling Alan make your nervous? I’ll call him one of these days, I usually prefer to just sit back and listen though.

  88. bc he’s a famous person with his own tv and radio shows, and the calls are broadcast live across the nation.

    duh! :-D

  89. I took that silly political test before.. so i jsut did it again..

    Your political compass:
    Economic Left/Right: 5.62
    Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.31

  90. Have to say, BTW, it takes some balls to praise Keith Olbermann if you work for Fox, even if it’s after midnight on the radio.

  91. I took that silly political test before.. so i jsut did it again..

    Your political compass:
    Economic Left/Right: 5.62

Yeah, it’s not my favorite either.

  92. michael~ i looked through your page. do they pay you to write an article every day or something?

  94. bc he’s a famous person with his own tv and radio shows, and the calls are broadcast live across the nation.
    ———-

Well, I guess if you think of it that way it would be kind of nerve-racking….I always just thought of it as talking to Alan I guess.

Thanks alot, now I’m going to have that in the back of my head.

  95. back to me and my hunt for a new man. here are my requirements-

    1. look like King Leonidas in the movie 300
    2. make love like King Leonidas in the movie 300
    3. worship your wife like King Leonidas in the movie 300

  96. exactly, Dave. but once you start talking to Alan it’s not so bad.

one of the other challenges is that bc we don’t work in radio, we don’t really understand how much we can say in our allotted time. i’ve just learned to let ‘er rip, and alan will stop me and move on when he has to.

  97. It’s not only that, talking to Alan on the radio, it’s that Alan’s show is very fast paced, you have to talk quickly and respond quickly and I don’t speak that way. I think about what I want to say while I’m speaking and so I’m slower paced. Hahaha I talk like Barack Obama! LOL!

  98. @Cheryl

They pay me $3-$5 per article depending on how many articles I write. The more I write, the more I get paid per article. I don’t really think of it as a “real job”, but it’s fun anyway and good experience since I’m pretty sure I’m going into communications/journalism.

  99. I hope you like being single Cheryl.

Cause your gonna need to get used to it with sites set that high.

michael~ yeah, i thought that it seemed like a really great opportunity for you. the more you write, the better you get.

  102. epiphany~ i actually write down what i’m going to say before i call. i don’t read it word for word, but i’m able to refer to it while i’m talking.

  103. For those of you who don’t know what Cheryl is talking about:

  129. Yeah I’ve noticed the disappearance of Della! She did so after Hillary dropped out. That was her obsession. Now she has nothing to say anymore. What an unpleasant person!

  130. fury~ if you haven’t called a radio show before, when the line makes this weird static noise that means that you’re on the air and you should start talking.

  164. btw, does your image mean that you’re a member of the vast right wing conspiracy?

    oh my Lord…

  165. Ugh…Cheryl, Ehrman looks like an ethical/existential nihilist, at least from the selections on Amazon.com. It’s probably interesting reading but I can get a lot of God-bashing on the internet for free.

“Suffering is evil so it disproves a good, loving God.” Why is suffering bad if God doesn’t exist? Evil and justice have no meaning and evildoers can eternally get away with what they do. You can go both ways with that argument I think. This guy thinks that because HE cannot understand why we suffer, or the Bible gives different viewpoints on the reason of suffering, that the whole thing should be rejected. Seems to me if someone wishes to reject Christianity and/or the Bible just say “it’s impossible for Christ to be both God and man” or “I believe in the faith of common descent and evolution” and be done with it. I don’t know why suffering even has to enter the picture.

And, yes, I’m a card-carrying VRWC member! Glad someone noticed! :D
