Canadian Government Takes Kids Away From Mom Who Drew Swastika
The swastika was painted on the arm of her 7-year-old daughter. The mother is a white nationalist and says what she did was stupid. It was the second time the child showed up at school thusly decorated. Child and Family Services have taken both the daughter and a 2-year-old son out of the home. But if that is the belief of the parents, should the government intervene?

The government should probably not intervene…although teaching a child to hate could be considered a type of abuse. But that is REALLY subjective, as many liberals think conservatives are haters.

Related: I think people who live in compounds are idiots, but I think the Texas Child Protection Agency or whoever that was should NOT have removed all of those children from that Mormon cult. Parents have the right to raise their children how they see fit. It’s kind of unfortunate that you don’t need training or a license to be a parent…just a reproductive system.
Oh, by the way, if I were in charge I’d force everyone to espouse conservative values! America would truly be Christendom! Muahahahaha!

As much as I think it sucks this woman would teach her child to be this way, I don’t think the “offense” is worth taking the kid away.

flap said~
“the Texas Child Protection Agency or whoever that was should NOT have removed all of those children from that Mormon cult.”
flap, you are INCORRECT. they received a phone call alleging child abuse, and therefore had every right to intervene. at the time the ranch was raided, they did not know that the call was placed from a woman in colorado.
Sarah~ i agree. i don’t know all the details on how the Canadian govt works, but the govt should not intervene, unless they’re prepared to intervene on Christian families who teach their children Christian values. unless parents are inciting their kids to violence, they have to be left alone. the same rule must apply to all people.

Is teaching a kid Nazi values significantly different from teaching a kid about waging jihad, or teaching a kid how to sell crack?

Cheryl, so if you’re living in a apartment community, your next door neighbor is abusing her kid, they get a call, they have a right to come remove your kid?
I don’t agree with the cult, I think it’s wacky, I think some child abuse was definitely going on. The Warren Jeffs guy is a nutcase, obviously. I HATE to agree with the ACLU because they’re almost always wrong but I tilt toward the parents.
Perhaps I think teaching children liberal values is abuse? What standards are we using? I agree with you, RC, that it’s pretty extreme and wrong but the government snatching kids away…I dunno.

It may be that in some jurisdictions a phone call alleging abuse, if the call meets certain criteria, is enough for child protective services to demand entry and investigate further, or possibly they can remove a kid temporarily while they investigate.
It hard to guess what to say about the Nazi bunch without knowing if they’re actual psychos with a backyard shrine to Adolph Hitler, or if they’re just racist wannabes.

flap~ what planet do you live on, bro? didn’t you say that you’re a teacher? you work with kids, so shouldn’t you know that
suspicion of physical and/or sexual abuse is ALWAYS grounds for the Children Social Services to investigate and remove children from a household.
parents can and DO teach their children to be little liberals or little conservatives. which is why i said on the Canadian/Nazi thread that unless that woman was teaching her kids to be violent towards those she’s teaching them to hate, that there’s really nothing we can do about it.

i forgot that we’re currently on the canadian/nazi thread.

Heh, now who’s sleeping?
But, seriously, I’m no expert, but I suspect that whether or not the “government” can remove kids from their family is not as black and white an issue as we may think. And when it comes to family court judges, in the US, I have a strong impression that they can exercise a very broad degree of discretion in deciding what’s “best” for children.
