  5. “Gotta have faith…that’s all I can say. I say that as a lover and lifetime student of science, too.”

    as a lover of science, have you ever taken the time time read anything by Richard Dawkins or Victor Stenger? or did you brush them off as nonsensical demon-inspired books?

    you quoted the book of john. do you know who wrote the book of john?

    now, i’m not trying to challenge your faith so that you don’t believe. “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…” 1 Peter 3:15

  6. Well, I’m not a Darwinist, Epiphany.

    Okay, God doesn’t exist: why should I care about humans? Furthermore, who cares about chimps? No absolute morals means why should I care about anyone?

    by flap July 12, 2008 at 12:09 am

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    That’s not an answer flap. I was giving you an example of how there are living beings who know nothing of God and yet can experience sadness without knowledge of a God.
    I also read a story about how a chimpanzee was observed risking his life to save a mate who was drowning in a river. Chimps are afraid of the water yet risked his own life and supressed his natural fear to save another being. And he did this wiht no knowledge of God. This chimp performed a moral act. If there can be no morality with God, then how did this occur?
    I didn’t say that God doesn’t exist. I said that you don’t necessarily need God to be moral. I didn’t when I was a child and I know athiests and agnostics, as I have said before, that are more moral than most religious people.
  7. pooh~ i guess no one else wants to join us.
    they’re all floating in the universe with Mr. Terror Snake
  8. Cheryl, I can’t “prove” my faith to myself no matter how much research I’ve done that supports it. Furthermore, there isn’t anything that I could read that would stop me from having the faith I have. Does that mean I’m close-minded? Perhaps, though I don’t think so. I’m confident in my faith…logically and supernaturally.
    I view Dawkins as an extremist, so, no, I choose not to read stuff he writes. He isn’t just an atheist, he’s anti-religious.
    Who wrote the Gospel of John? I suppose you’re going to tell me it isn’t John?
  9. Alan~ i don’t like the Nugent song. I’d prefer GNR.
  10. man, i’ll read what you wrote tomorrow.
    this is killing my buzz.
  11. No, no, Epiphany, I am saying that sadness is IRRELEVANT without God. Who the heck cares if anyone is sad? Why should I care?
    What is “moral” without those morals coming from an immutable source? What is a moral act based on? Saving another being is moral? Why?
  12. “Who wrote the Gospel of John? I suppose you’re going to tell me it isn’t John?”
    OMG Flap. No, John did NOT write this Gospel.
    Now, I apologize to everyone for bringing this up. but i must focus on enjoying the last 40 minutes of alan’s show without the prescense of my son! (he’s with my parents on friday nights)
  13. one more thing i’d like to say~ the fact that American politics is populated with men who actually live out their Christian eschatalogical beliefs, is a very dangerous reality.
  14. btw, the apostle John didn’t write the book of Revelation either. that’s the majority opinion held by atheist AND Christian New Testament Scholars.
  15. what the hell is this guy singing?
    now THAT really kills my buzz.
  16. I think that who wrote the Gospel of John is, at the very least, subject to debate. Can you definitively say John didn’t write it?
  17. Saving another being is moral. Why? Because it gives you a feeling of having done something good. It doesn’t have to be analyzed in words. It’s an instinctual human feeling of goodness that overwhelms you. It doesn’t need language to define it. It just IS.
  18. morality is POSSIBLY a result of psychological evolution. helping to save others of our ‘tribe’ contributes to the survival of ourselves.
  19. it’s such a treat to have pooh, ‘mouse, and vince here tonight. i wonder where dave is. fury rolled out. guess we were boring him.
  20. Haha I wished I had bought a bottle of “Mikes Hard Lemonade”. It has 5% alcohol.
  21. Waaaait, Epiphany, you sound like those crazy Christians…it just “is”?
    Maybe I think killing off excess human population is moral because it makes me feel good.
    So the idea of morality is meaningless.
    “It’s an instinctual human feeling of goodness that overwhelms you.” That could refer to something else, but I will not get lewd… :-P
  22. did you guys hear that one of MLK’s son is suing his siblings?
  23. It’s a treat to have Vince here? I would beg to differ lol!
  24. Why is he suing?
  25. those drinks tend to have too much sugar in them. i’d recommend that you buy some rum and diet coke.
    btw, did you ever try coke zero?
  26. wait, i said it wrong. the other 2 are suing the brother, bc they said that he “misappropriated” funds from the individual estates of Coretta and MLK.
  27. flap~ i hesitate to go back to this subject, but here’s a book written by a nice christian pastor that i think you should read.
    http://www.amazon.com/Misquoting-Truth-Guide-Fallacies-Ehrmans/dp/0830834478
  28. FFAF is now Jesus Time apparently…
  29. LOL, Fury.
  30. this religious discussion is a little heavy for a Friday night don’t ya think? I mean neither of you are getting anywhere with each other over it.
  31. Hahaha. Epiphany and flap are debating moral absolutes again
  32. Hannity & Colmes don’t get anywhere with each other, either…
  33. “Hahaha. Epiphany and flap are debating moral absolutes again”
    ROFLMAO, Michael!
  34. Hahahaha flap!
    yes sometimes my feelings define for me what is good. And yes it might feel good for someone to kill someone off but for the good of humanity we create laws to stop or punish that person after the fact. For the sake of humanity.
    It’s not that I don’t understand what you’re saying flap. I understand how predatory humans can be. How evil and low they can sink. I don’t necessarily have a problem with bringing God into it. I’m just saying that you don’t ALWAYS have to bring God and then the bible into every situation because ultimately everyone will interpert God differently according to their particular religion or view even within the same religion. I do believe that there is good in all of us even without God.
  35. am i the only one who thinks the nugent free for all music is LAME?
  36. No Cheryl. He should use the GNR because he’ll never have to worry about Axl Rose saying something offensive because no one litens to him when he says anything anyway…
  37. drill here drill now pay less
  38. Sorry, I don’t mean to get so heavy with the discussion on a Friday night. Now that is definitely a sin.
  39. Epiphany, there are many atheists out there who are a lot nicer and more “moral” than many Christians. All I’m saying is the *basis* for morals gotta come from SOMETHING unchanging or it’s might makes right, majority rules, opinions, etc.
    In other words, I am saying that morality requires a measuring stick. As Cheryl says, feel me?
  40. doesn’t anyone else on here have myspace? for goodness sake, how can you people not have a myspace? or at the very least, facebook!
  41. “Sorry, I don’t mean to get so heavy with the discussion on a Friday night. Now that is definitely a sin.”
    it’s my fault for bringing all this up.
  42. “As Cheryl says, feel me?”
    lol, flapper.
    no, cheryl says “u feel me?”
  43. I blame Cheryl for all of this thread’s ills.
  55. i think that alan should write a new book after this election.
  56. I second that Cheryl.
  57. Pot should be legalized…it’s not any worse than alcohol.
  58. AND WE STILL WANT LIBERALLAND TEE SHIRTS!
    And mugs.
  59. I agree flap. For adults though, not minors. But I also think the legal age for drinking should go back to being 18.
    liberalland t-shirts? hmmmm…
    flap~ do you smoke pot?
  62. i think that 18 is a little young for drinking. i’d sign off for 19 or 20. but i do agree that 21 is too late.
  63. O’Reilly stuff? Oh gee I don’t know what to say LOL!
  64. It was 18 when I was that age. If we can send them off to die in an occupation/war and trust them to vote in these pinheads in office, let them get drunk!
  92. I own “absence of color” shoes?
    lol. yes, that’s they way we’re going to have to speak from now on. politically correct to the EXTREME.
  93. The reason I’m not good in chat is if I’m going to say more than 1 sentence I like to think about what I’m going to say, this can take a minute or two and then I like to edit what I’ve written. By the time I click on submit I’m 5 or even 10 minutes behind eveyone else. I can’t keep up. And then there’s always having to deal with complete chaos. Alan will have to moderate.
  94. ‘night Epiphany.
    ‘night Michael.
    ‘night Pooh.
    ‘night Fury.
    ‘night LV.
    ‘night Alan!
    ‘night Aimee.
  95. You know… sometimes being “politically correct” is just plain having GOOD MANNERS!
  96. talking about pot? Pot is the reason I’ve been off and on tonight. Sometimes weed is more important than Alan. hahaha
  97. epiphany~ don’t worry. we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. and during live chat, no one’s going to really be speaking in paragraphs, for the exact reason that it moves too fast.
  101. hehe
  107. “a lot more he’s than 2!”
    what does that mean, lv?
    epiphany~ i’ve wondered that myself. it’s bc i always wonder about people who don’t have kids. it’s hard for me to imagine not wanting to have any, but i know a couple of people who’ve made that decision. do you have any?
  108. nevermind, i get it now. fury has probably been smoking so long that he doesn’t get the giggles anymore.
    I blame the government….mostly Bush
  112. i understand why some people choose not to have children, but then i DON’T understand it. does that make sense?
  114. Cheryl I love kids. Other people’s kids. Well sometimes. No I don’t have any. I have never really seriously wanted children. It would probably be nice to have your own children some of the time but not all of the time. It just isn’t my cup of tea.
  115. thanks, Michael! i always know that you and E have my back!
  116. Well Cheryl it isn’t exactly fun to deal with some of these people when you’re high. Although people are generally cool on Fridays. Probably because they are drinking. I like to enjoy the weed, not have a lot of negativity. Ya know what I mean sweetie?
  117. It makes sense. I never wanted children until I got pregnant. No way was I gonna abort and having children was the best thing I’ve done. I love them more than I could ever believe.
  118. i hear ya, E. that’s why i said i understand it, but then i don’t.
    there are a LOT of times when i wish i had more time for myself. tobias can be so overwhelming, and there’s so much that i want to do academically, professionally, and intellectually. he was an unplanned pregnancy, so i was definitely not ready for motherhood. i understand that some people fell that they make a more positive contribution to the world as individuals. some people want to be parents, some don’t.
  119. i know exactly what you mean, Fury. i felt bad for brining up religion, bc then i didn’t want to keep debating it bc it was ruining my alcohol buzz.
  120. LV~ are you the one who lives in Arizona?
