George Will: “We Are The Crybabies Of The Western World”
And “Phil Gramm is right.” So, when Obama says people are bitter and clinging to guns, he gets raked over the coals. When Republicans say people are whiners and crybabies, that’s okay?
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubN3DPnr4UQ&eurl]

Actually, yes it’s okay. Wasn’t Gramm referring to people in the media talking down the economy? Obama was alluding to gun owners and us evil (and stupid) Christians! We’re ignorant rubes who have to have mental crutches to get us through our days!
Please save us, oh Saint Barack! Tear us away from the things we as a country have held sacred for 230 years! Show us a better way!
Sarcastic enough? I actually like Obama, though I disagree with him, so be nice, libs.

is that donna brazile sitting at the table with that moron? i wonder what she had to say about this.
if this guy had said that PART of the problem is psychological, i wouldn’t criticize his comment. but the reason people feel that our economy is much worse than it is is bc, in my opinion, we feel that we’re sliding quickly down a very dangerous slope. there is no immediate answer to rising oil prices. they continue to rise unchecked, and it is impacting so much of our lives that we fear it is only going to get worse. it’s like a runaway train that isn’t just running away, but is barreling down the track at lightning speed.
July 13th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Phil Gramm was speaking of the American people as being a bunch of whiners. He said the constant droning of the media is what made us lose confidence. But he is clearly speaking of America as a whole…not just the media.
July 13th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
The investor crybabies at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac whined in Hank Paulson’s/Ben Bernanke’s ears.
If you’ve been watching tonight’s news, whining apparently works. Bailout city, courtesy of the American taxpayer!!!
Will Phil Gramm and George Will save any of their whining criticism for their moneyed Wall Street friends? Or is that different?
BWAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
July 14th, 2008 at 1:00 am
I’m not crying, I’m pissed.
July 14th, 2008 at 1:16 am
It’s not a ‘recession’ until the rich start to feel it.
July 14th, 2008 at 1:57 am
mouse, dave, and boogie~ very well said, you guys.
July 14th, 2008 at 2:07 am
The message is coming across loud and clear.
Shut up and be glad for the crumbs they leave us.
July 14th, 2008 at 2:22 am
yummmm, crumbs!
does anyone have an opinion on the Belgians buying Anheiser-Busch? kind of ticks me off…
July 14th, 2008 at 2:24 am
The Crybabies of the world are those who have been spoiled by the Bush Administration’s “Affirmative Access” and they are crying because it looks like America wants change. They are crying about Obama’s color, Hillary’s loss, and McCain’s win. They are crying because they are watching history roll through like a train with McCain standing in the tracks. We are equal and America is not a nation defined by “Affirmative Access.” We are not a nation built on lies.
July 14th, 2008 at 4:06 am
>So, when Obama says people are bitter and clinging to guns, he gets raked over the coals. When Republicans say people are whiners and crybabies, that’s okay?
This is an excellent point. Which speaker was perceived as making a general observation of some validity, and which one was perceived as singling out a small segment of the population for condescension?
The difference may be subtle, but remains important.
July 14th, 2008 at 7:21 am
Actually the distinction is this.
One man is running for President
The other is not.
Gramm was stating his opinion that peolpe are whining too much.
Obama went way beyond that. He was attributing hatred of immigrants, a mania for guns, an othewrise irrational religious faith to people in the midwest becasue that was the only way they can handle economic hardship.
I know lefties try to always make the flimsiest moral equivilence so that they can excuse their side (like comparing Wright with Hagee) but as usually, the comparasion is weak.
July 14th, 2008 at 7:54 am
the true crybabies are LIBERAL PUKE!!!!!
July 14th, 2008 at 10:09 am
THE TRUR CRYBABIES ARE LIBERAL PUKE!
July 14th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Why? We are like children spoiled on the deception and illogic of Neo-Conservatism. We are crybabies due to the commercialization of our spoiled lives. We are a nation where CEO’s make 400 times as much as the slave labor we call employee’s. We are crybabies because we have a government that forgot about government for the people and by the people. Our government traded those values in for a cozy relationship with corporations. Oh, that’s right, the old fashioned term for that is, Fascism. We are crybabies due to the victimization of citizen sovereignty. We cry because we feel our voice is silent in a room of investment bankers drunk on the free market. Drunk on a market that is free to run the government, however they see fit.
July 14th, 2008 at 10:42 am
“…like comparing Wright with Hagee…”
There is no comparison there.
Hagee is obviously a false prophet, preying on people’s weaknesses and fears, whereas Wright merely told the truth.
July 14th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Had GW bush got off his lazy ass and verified the actual threat/WMD in Iraq to the USA we would not have this situation. Furthermore the USA would still have “trillions” in the bank for self and allied defense.
Maybe the ABC round table should put this in their pipe and smoke it.
July 14th, 2008 at 11:41 am
So the elites have looked down from their Ivory Towers and deemed the American people crybabies?
Well, Marie Marie Antoinette:
Liberté, égalité, fraternité!
Vive l’élection!
July 14th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
and …
LET THEM EAT CAKE!
or catfood if it’s affordable …
July 14th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Before bush, a recession was defined as 2 negative quarters of GDP. So far, we have not had a single quarter of negative growth.
Why do so many people use the word recession if not because of negativity and whining?
July 14th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
It never ceases to amaze me that folks who don’t truly have a care in the world can presume to understand that real people are really suffering~!! That’s the true elitist!!
July 14th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
The rich are doing fine, that’s all that matters, right Brandon?
July 15th, 2008 at 1:42 am
“… a recession was defined as 2 negative quarters of GDP …”
No. Sorry, but you’re incorrect.
http://www.nber.org/cycles/recessions.html
“A recession is a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales. A recession begins just after the economy reaches a peak of activity and ends as the economy reaches its trough.”
The link explains more of this in their first FAQ.
The NBER is who makes the official recession/expansion calls. So, they would know.
Personally, this feels like a recession.
July 15th, 2008 at 1:58 am
It’s a recession when EVERYBODY I know, not just poor folks like me, is struggling to afford groceries. Granted, the rich folks could tighten their belts and not eat like gourmands every night, but the point is, it’s hitting all of us.
Fuck these guys. (it’s what they’re saying to us)
Americans work more hours with less vacation than any other country (I think we’ve passed up Japan). We’re racing around totally stressed out all the time, and now, even with all that work, we can’t make ends meet!
July 15th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
sky: Dont look towards Washington for any releif.
As far as Harry Reid is concerned oil and coal affect our health. Nancy Pelosi says new fuel supplies are not the answer. Obama is only concerned at the rate of increase , not the increase itself. John McCain thinks that ANWR is the same thing as the Grand Canyon.
Congress will spend months doing irrelevent hearings about Bush looking for anything just to score political points, meanwhile, unregulated and unaccountable Freddie Mac and Fannie May are going super-nova and going to create hte biggest black hole in the galaxy.
the games go on. ..
July 15th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
hey, I’m not looking for help… I’m just planting my own garden.
But hey, if they wanted to subsidize bread so it didn’t cost $5.00 a loaf, I wouldn’t complain.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Everything they “help” makes it worse
July 15th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
wait, I’m agreeing with you!!
I guess this is what America’s all about. :)
July 15th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
i was agreeing with you too.. using your comment to start my own complaining
July 15th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
hey sky! missed ya, girl.
i have a local Wonderbread Outlet store in my town. basically, they pull the bread from the regular grocery store shelves a few days before it goes bad and sell it there. i buy a few loaves at a time and freeze what i’m not using.
i also buy my meat at a store called Giant (don’t know if you have those there). but i buy the meat that they mark down the day of expiration date, and again take it home and freeze it. works out pretty good. buying my meat that way is cheaper than walmart.
July 15th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
wait- aren’t you a vegetarian? crap. well, as LV LIVES suggested, try to buy local produce.
fyi- i bought my son 2 betta fish and a hermit crab last week. one of them died after 2 days, i let him flush it down the toilet and bought him a new one.
July 15th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Vince P: i know :) I guess i was a little stunned to be agreeing with you for the first time.
Cheryl:
Poor baby with the dead fish :(
Yeah, I’m trying to mostly shop the farmer’s market… and I’ve found some cheap little stores around town. Also, I’m trying to by no processed food (except bread at this point). It’s a lot cheaper to make your own: cookies, cereal, snacks, etc. I can’t even imagine if we were buying meat! It’s so expensive, no?
July 16th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
how the hell do you make your own cereal?!
i don’t think meat is that expensive, but that could just be bc i’m accustomed to buying it. it’s me and my 4 year old. he has a big appetite, but at least i’m not buying food for 3 or 4.
one way i save money is that i sometimes buy ground turkey instead of beef. i also do that bc i don’t want too much red meat in our diet. i make a really good meatloaf that lasts us for 2 days.
another of my favorite meat items is smoked sausage. hillshire farms smoked sausage is a great brand. i use that in a boxed jambalaya mix or with au gratin potatoes, or just as a plain on meat for the meal.
i like tuna helper, bc it’s less than $3 per meal (box plus tuna, tuna’s less than a dollar)
the other meat i get i get when it’s reduced. boneless chicken thighs are much cheaper than the boneless chicken breast things.
i don’t suppose you have a recipe idea for one green and one yellow squash that i have? i don’t even know why i bought that the other day. i was thinking about cooking it in chopped tomato sauce.
July 16th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Sometimes the truth hurts.
July 16th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
Karma: (you can’t see my finger, but it’s there, buddy)(see way back in my posts about your karma coming home to roost)
Cheryl: chopped in tomato sauce, or sauteed with onions and lemon juice… My little dude tends to prefer real simple food, so I’d probably just sautee it for him in a little olive oil, with salt.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:49 am
lol, sky. karma’s a nice lady, she just tells it like it is (to her) and unfortunately most of us rarely agree with her. but she’s always been nice on the blog… just got an opinion i’d prefer she not have, lol.
excellent idea about the squash! good thinking to keep it simple. sometimes i think i’m a culinary genius and want to make some really good shit, so i forget that i can just make it simple, and it’ll be just as good.
what do you think about adding tuna helper to your diet? tuna is yum, yum, yummy!
July 17th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
okay… anyway, I flip off my friends sometimes too..
You know, I’ve made a pact with vegan papa of Zan not to have any met in the house, so we only eat those sort of things at friends houses…
But I give my little guy cod liver oil every morning,(he LOVES it!) and lots of eggs and cheese, so I think he’ll do fine. I’d probably better start taking that oil too, because I do crave fish.
Oooh, oooh, sardines are pretty cheap, and very healthy, if you get them whole (not filleted)
July 17th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
We are a nation of debt up to our eyeballs and Phil calls us crybabies? We are not a nation unto ourselves while we’re in so much debt. We belong to our debtors. Is anyone listening? Nope.
July 17th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
