  1. Excellent picture here Colmes!

I may disagree with you on being weak but getting information for my website:

I always go to your blog first because I know your on the top of the political game!

by the way, when is your new website coming?

    I am checking everyday!

  2. I’ve heard many-a conservative claim that Clinton’s budgetary surplus was the direct result of the Reagan and Bush years, which supposedly created the surplus.

I honestly don’t know enough about it to evaluate the truth in that.

  3. I think Alan is trying for an early September launch.

  4. I think that, if you cannot find when something began, then credit has to go to the person with nearest proximity to it, therefore, without certain proof that the surplus began with Reagan, thereby giving him the assumption of credit, the default has to be Clinton, absent a valid alternative.

  5. Here’s the debt from 93 until 07. The debt never went down.. there was never a real surplus in the 90s. The so-called surplus was an accounting trick.

  6. What people attributed to Reagan was the tax policy which incentivized entrepuenural activity and risk-taking.

The Dot Com phantom economy was made possible by those policies.

I’ve never heard it suggested that the govt balance sheet in the 90s is directly attributed to Reagan.

  7. Cheryl Carroll said,
“I’ve heard many-a conservative claim that Clinton’s budgetary surplus was the direct result of the Reagan and Bush years, which supposedly created the surplus.

I honestly don’t know enough about it to evaluate the truth in that.

    ………………………………….

It seems every administration blames the previous one for a bad economy, and takes credit for a good economy themselves.

It brings to mind a scene from the movie, Traffic:

“You know when Khrushchev was forced out he sat down and wrote two letters. He gave them to his successor and he said ‘when you get yourself into a situation you can’t get out of open the first letter and you’ll be saved.
And when you get yourself into another situation you can’t get out of, open the second letter.’

Well, soon enough, this guy found himself in a tight place so he opened the first letter which said ‘blame everything on me.’ So he blamed the old man and it worked like a charm. Well, he got himself into a second situation he couldn’t get out , so he opened the second letter. It said ‘Sit down and write two letters’.”

Old Lefty~ Not sure that I’ve seen TRAFFIC, but that sounds hilarious. Must have been a good movie.

  10. Cheryl,

    Traffic plot from imbd:

‘A conservative judge is appointed by the President to spearhead America’s escalating war against drugs, only to discover that his teenage daughter is an addict.’

  11. Amd George Bush wasted no time in pissing that surplus away. Now the U.S. is in debt up to its ears.

  12. My friends?

Someone should suggest to McCain that he sounds like a carnival barker or a used car salesman with his favorite and often used line. I think Robert Preston also used it a lot in “The Music Man”. Professor Harold Hill was a con man though, which is nearly the same thing as a Republican.

My friends, either you are closing your eyes to a situation you do not wish to acknowledge or you are not aware of the caliber of disaster indicated by the presence of a pool table in your community!!!

Our national debt will be twice what it was in 2000 by 2009. A $10 trillion dollar national debt is $33,000/American. It’s about $100,000/working American.

We’re close to a debt large enough it can never be repaid. We’ll be lucky to keep up on the interest. The only way to reduce the debt in real terms may be to devalue it through inflation. That’ll be fun.

  13. Last week Alan suggested the Anthrax guy was a right-wing terrorist.

But guess what… Alan lied to us on this blog. I think it’s pretty dispicable to take advantage of people’s preconceptions and play to them.. especially to do nothing more than make child-like tit-for-tat sort of equivlence.

Why do i say that? Because Mr Anthrax is a Democrat. He has been registered as one ever since 1982 and voted in every Democrat primary since 1996.

You owe us an apology for misleading us.

  14. All prior years to 1999 Clinton ran a deficit. It wasn’t until the Republican’s took control of Congress in 1994/1995 with “The Contract with America” that the budget began to decrease and lead to the 1999/2000 surplus. Clinton did nothing.

  15. Thanks for reminding us what a great Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich was, Slick Willy went kicking and screaming for every proposed balanced budget item but your best friend Dick Morris finally told him it was the only way to salvage his presidency after his rapid decline in the first term.

Unlike Screecher Pelosi who has added more earmarks, let the economy be destroyed and only allowing corporate socialism, and sitting by while gas prices doubled.

Oh, and Alan, get your facts right. Reagan cut discretionary spending by 1.4% during his presidency and is the only president since before the New Deal who actually reduced the size of government. Clinton did a fairly good job with only 2.1% growth, but then again thats because Representative Gingrich was taking care of business and Morris was keeping ole Slick in line. And the infamous “surplus” lie you communists tout around was a projection and was dependent on raiding the Social Security trust fund. We know how the books are fixed Alan, just like your lies about oil prices. You’re on the losing side and people like you are beginning to show your desperation.

  16. Notice the pic starts with Reagan? it doesnt show what preceeded him, Jimmuh Carter, one of the worst US Presients in history.

Even Clinton admitted he inherited prosperity from the Reagan days, and Reagan had said it would take 10-12 years to get the full rewards, putting the timeframe into the 1992-96 presidency.

the US economy really plummeted on the day Al Gore announced he would file in court to contest the 2000 election results, thats while Clinton was still president even though he was impeached.

One can look up the date and evaluate the economy and how it sunk and never recovered, so GW Bush inherited the Clinton/Gore depression

  17. Bush saved the economy and is the only president to pull a country out of a recession while simultaneously fighting two wars in HUMAN HISTORY. What we are experiencing now is a product of overspending and inflationary taxation after printing too much currency while maintaining high energy costs. And if Obama is elected the country will slide into a Depression if he raises the taxe rates because the only thing saving this country is the amount of available personal income and does nothing about lowering energy costs as he keeps bragging alongside Pelosi that the intentions of the Democratic Party consist of. Alan either is a liar or a math idiot.

  24. Not one of our sanctimonious leftist blowhards have said a word about Mr Anthrax being a Democrat.

Just like with politicians who lie or corruption… they dont really care about those things.. they only care about those things when they could use them as weapons against the other side.

  28. I think the cartoon gives great support to the general philosophy that conservatives advocate.

It’s not taxes that drive the debt/deficit, it’s out of control spending.

No one in the early 90s had anticipated the explosion in economic activity that to occur in the late 90s.

Clinton certainly never talked about or expected to get rid of the deficit.

It was the dynamic of GOP Congress vs Dem White House that kept the discipline regarding keeping growth in spending under control.

Then with the explosion of tax revenue due to insanity of the phantom dot com economy, the deficit was cut significantly (there was never a surplus.. they still steal all the social security money)

Then came the wretched “Compassionate Conservative” and out the window went any discipline regarding spending.

I have to laugh when Democrats feign outrage about this. As if they would have spent less. haha who are they fooling.

That is what is so wrong about this debate.. Democrats have no intention of keeping to any fiscal discipline.

I’m not speaking as a Repulican.. since I am not one. I do not have to defend their poor record.. I am looking to the future and looking to avoid having the same stupid mistakes be made over and over.

Though i thikn economic reality is finally catching up to the long-term money disaster that both parties created via our government.

That Democrats pretend that the govt isn’t bankrupt.. that they pretend that they’re going to be able to implement their socialist schemes … that this will be sustainable.. that this wont destroy the economy of this nation… is just a sign of their total insane determination to gain power by saying and doing anything they have to regardless of the conseequences.

I dont want to hear about “well Bush did it too” great.. we all know that.. so what are you going to do knowing that? Rush to do all the same things yourselves.. … smart people would say lets learn from the mistakes and not redo.

But so few of you are smart. Responding to every challenge with “well bush did it too” is infantile.

And to prove my point I predict four kinds of responses.

Call me a Islamophobe or similiar.. because of their uncontrollable pavlovian compulsion to totally change the subject and attack personally

Bring up every Republican sin regardless of what I had just said about it

Ignore the substance of what I said and attack me for being so mean

Ignore everything i said and pretend your shit dont stink.

  29. Vince P, liberalism is insanity. You can’t waste your time worrying about setting them straight, you just got to talk to people who know the truth. Obama got busted for saying inflating tires would save as much oil as drilling would produce and when he got exposed it was the biggest case of CYA ever. Listen to Alan on the radio try to spin shit around so that anyone who calls up saying something like Obama is a homosexual he blows them off as slandering, but someone calls up about a Republican he gives them twenty minutes and sends a text message that he can’t wait to fellate them. Liberals tell one lie after another, we see more and more instances of illegals killing people and all they do is scream racism, the war in Iraq is pretty much ending in victory and rather than celebrate the accomplishments of the military that they have called murderers and uneducated dropouts repeatedly they move as fast as they can to thank Iranian terrorists, their answer to people’s dollar having less spending power is to raise taxes and keep gas prices high so that low income workers that they lie about giving a fuck about will have even more problems meeting costs of living, and they promise to perpetually turn out even dumber and dumber generations by doing everything the teachers’ unions tell them about wrecking any measure of academic requirements. You’ve got to understand that when people just utterly hate their country the whole point of their agenda is to kill it as fast as possible, and the only way to make that even sound desirable is to couch it in terms of empathy for suffering and making everyone see them self as a victim. They are the true dividers and intolerant bigots, a conservative could exist in a vacuum, a liberal HAS to have someone to blame for their own ineptitude.

  30. alancolmesrapedmydog ,

It’s AMAZING how BOTH side see the same thing….about the other side:

CONSERVATIVEISM is insanity. You can’t waste your time worrying about setting them straight, you just got to talk to people who know the truth. McCAIN got busted for saying That we should turn the lights out 5 minutes early, and when he got exposed it was the biggest case of CYA ever so he had to trash Obama for stating what the energy dept AND NASCAR Have advocated.
Listen to RUSH on the radio try to spin shit around so that anyone who calls up saying something like McCAIN is incoherent he blows them off as slandering, but someone calls up about a LIBERAL he gives them twenty minutes and sends a text message that he can’t wait to fellate them. RIGHT WINGERS tell one lie after another, we see more and more instances of illegals killing people and all they do is Lobby for MORE CHEAP LABOR, while giving lip service to their listeners.
, IRAQ has pretty much become a satellite state of IRAN, but STILL they refuse to hold DEAR LEADER accountable, and continue to denigrate the troops by voting AGAINST the GI bill, and EXTENDING their service, and continue to prop up AHMADINEJAD, by matching the silly, belligerent rhetoric that put him in power to begin with.
, their answer to people’s dollar having less spending power is to keep giving tax breaks to corporations who ship jobs overseas and the DEREGULATION that causes the world to DISTRUST AMERICAN PRODUCTS!that they lie about giving a fuck about will have even more problems meeting costs of living, and they promise to perpetually turn out even dumber and dumber generations by doing everything the ANTI PUBLIC SCHOOL, NO TAX CONSERVATIVES tell them about wrecking any measure of academic requirements, and NOT funding NCLB. You’ve got to understand that when people just utterly hate their country the whole point of their agenda is to kill it as fast as possible, and the only way to make that even sound desirable is to couch it in terms being COMPASSION CONSERVATIVES and making everyone see them self as a victim. They are the true dividers and intolerant bigots, a LIBERAL could exist in a vacuum, a CONSERVATIVE HAS to have someone to blame for their own ineptitude
    …………………

And make NO mistake, that while liberals believe that average rank and file conservatives, love their country as much as WE do, (you’re just misguided),
We believe that many, (not all) of the conservative leaders, HATE the principles of this country… they feel that rule by ‘We The People” is just rule by the riff raff, and that ‘We The People’ just get in the way, and therefore have to be smeared.

  31. Fair enough, I’ll give you your space until Pelosi imposes the un-Fairness Doctrine. But there is no way you can back up the statement “liberals could exist in a vacuum.” Thats a contradiction in terms. Name one place in the world where everyone is a liberal. Who is the oppressor? Who is that evil greedy guy stepping on people? Who is that killjoy who actually thinks rules exist for a reason and is trying to keep society healthy and functioning by telling people NO to certain self destructive or unproductive behaviors?

No one gives a damn that Obama said inflate the tires. Had he been honest to begin with about it saving 3% of energy expenditures that would have been a perfectly defensible statement. What he said first was the it would save just as much oil AS DRILLING. That was disproven instantaneously as taking 10,000 years to reach.

You’re wrong about a lot of things, but the only blatant falsehood is the education money issue. Washington DC school districts recieve more than 50% of the funding per student than any other school system in the country, and they have some of the worst performing schools in the Western world. Its not a money issue, its telling the unions to do their fucking job and fire lazy ass teachers and stop putting up with disruptive students or just letting them quit. The US used to have the best education system in the world without a whole lot of federal involvement, kissing ass to the NEA and the teachers’ unions will spell irreparable damage if it doesn’t turn out quality citizens.

  32. Above we have two equally passionate persons debating and perhaps, just perhaps, learning that the opposite’s opinions are sometimes meritorious. Regarding education in the US…let’s not throw simplistic solutions at tough problems. We have a very wide gap in income, living circumstances, language spoken at home, role models, adequate nutrition so that getting a love for learning adopted cross the spectrum is most difficult. Unions are not to blame. They do their best to attract quality teachers who are vastly underpaid for their major role in society. They win some and they lose some. Low expectations seem to rule however. A Manhatten project to address the very real issues facing us would likely result in education improvements to put us back into competition with our world rivals. Look at the excellent materials from The Teaching Company regarding high school courses taught by the best teachers in America being made available to an ever wider group of students as one example of what can be achieved. When both sides learn to agree on common issues, we can roll up our sleeves and really improve America…regardless of our political identities. That working together is what is Great about this nation. Try it…you’ll like it!

  33. alancolmesrapedmydog ,

I’m more concerned about media consolidation, than The Fairness Doctrine.
We went from 0 hours of liberal talk radio a day in 2000 to 12 hours a day at present..

The Fairness Doctrine was based on the principle that the airwaves BELONGED to the people, and while stations could make profits, they owed the public SOMETHING for the use of THEIR airwaves.

The Fairness Doctrine had two basic elements: It required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters. Stations were given wide latitude as to how to provide contrasting views: It could be done through news segments, public affairs shows or editorials.
Remember the public commentary by citizens, “the views expressed are not those of Action McNews…”

“But there is no way you can back up the statement “liberals could exist in a vacuum.”
My post was a parody of yours, (because I’m not sure that conservatives realize that liberals have pretty much the same opinion of you as you have of us.)
You said: ” They are the true dividers and intolerant bigots, a conservative could exist in a vacuum, a liberal HAS to have someone to blame for their own ineptitude.”

I’m just demonstrating how easy it is to switch the names.

As for the schools, my kids did very well in public school with union teachers.
It might interest you to know that Barack Obama, has been lauded on both the left and right for supporting merit pay.

While I agree that money is not the ONLY issue, the economic circumstances and situation of the families play a HUGE role.

In the public schools my kids attended, (middle class to affluent suburb), the kids who didn’t do well were MOSTLY the kids whose families were distressed, often because of divorce, job loss.

  36. I just find it amusing that Bradley pointed out the obvious that Carter was not included, which itself is for an obvious reason, attempting to establish a pattern about Republican handling of the economy.

  37. The economy prospered under Ike, suffered under Kennedy and LBJ, prospered under Nixon, suffered under Carter, prospered under Reagan;

but in Bush Sr’s term the democrats sabotaged the economy to use it as a ploy to get elected so that doesnt count.

    the economy was soaring from Bush Sr’s work and peaked during Clintons term then because of Clinton suffered again and sank, then has revived under Bush Jr’s work and is strong;

Financial experts agree that the Hussein Obama &Co idea of raising taxes, income redistribution/communism and growing the size of govt will cripple the economy; plus they will not stop dependence of foreign oil, will not take any security actions in fact surrender to terrorists

  38. Hey Bradley, who said that the Democrats are going to raise YOUR taxes? In fact, a recent study of both campaigns tax plans showed that Obama’s was a net TAX CUT, and that he actually cut the average citizens taxes MORE than McCain did! Oh, right, we’re not supposed to talk about that.

Which Financial experts? I’d like to know.

Who said that Democrats will “Surrender to Terrorists”…in fact, last time I checked it was the Republicans who were stretching our military force to it’s very limits, and failed to maintain stability in Afghanistan while we were preoccupied in Iraq. If a military is that stretched, that it can’t even monitor our border checkpoints, how are we going to be able to defend out country?

The economy was not “soaring” under Bush Sr. In fact, the economy was so-so, and began to plummet near the end of his term, thanks to his policies which put too much trust in Supply side economics, something that was disavowed by ONE OF IT’S CREATORS!!

We had recessions under these presidents:
    Eisenhower: 2
    JFK: 0
    LBJ: 0
    Nixon/Ford: 1
Carter: 0 (Stagflation does not mean recession, and a recession is a sign of a bad economy)
Reagan: 2 (1982 and 1986 if memory serves me right, and they were both out of range from “Carter’s Influence”)
    Bush Sr.: 1
    Clinton: 0
    Bush Jr.: 2

Also: You state that “Democrats sabotaged the economy”…why…why, I ask you, would you assume that the Democrats would intentionally sabotage the economy…and even then, what makes you think that they would even have the power to do that? There is no way that they could have such direct and immediate control of the economy, it would actually be caused by long term policies or the continuation of said policies (1981-1990 3 recessions)

Also: you used “Hussein Obama…”…that makes me think that you think he is a Muslim…even though he is a devout Christian (he actually was born to a Secular family…his father (who he didn’t know all too well because he left Barack’s family) was actually an athiest, and his mother was a Christian. But the more troubling aspect of your comment is the fact that you perceive the religion of Islam as a negative thing, even though it is only a different belief in God than your own…that makes me think you are racist…or at least intolerant of other religions…and that’s sad, coupled with your lack of knowledge concerning the economy.

I can’t take someone called alancolmesrapedmydog seriously. I’m trying, but I just can’t.

  40. Bradley said,
    “The economy prospered under Ike,”
    …………………………..

Today’s right would have called Ike a far left Marxist!

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.

This world in arms is not spending money alone.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.
. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some fifty miles of concrete pavement. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people. This is, I repeat, the best way of life to be found on the road the world has been taking. This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron. [...] Is there no other way the world may live?”

-Dwight David Eisenhower, “The Chance for Peace,” speech given to the American Society of Newspaper Editors, Apr. 16, 1953.

Imagine a REPUBLICAN saying that defense spending was a theft from the poor!

Who knew Ike was a commie?

  43. As I recall, the Constitution says that government spending starts with the Congress, not the President. In recent years the President has only been able to rubber stamp the spending proposed by the Congress.

President Reagan and the first President Bush both had to deal with Dem Congresses. In fact, revenues to the government doubled during the Reagan Presidency despite (or because of) the Reagan tax cuts. Unfortunately, spending by the Dem Congress tripled during those same years, resulting in those huge deficits. Clinton had a Repub Congress for six of his years in office which put some restraint on spending.
