Iraq Wants Timetable To Get US Out

August 8th, 2008, 11:12 AM EDT

And the timetable is very close to the one proposed by Barack Obama.  If enacted, combat troops would be out of the country by October 2010, but so far the Bush administration hasn’t agreed to it.  A UN mandate expires at the end of this year.  At the moment there are 144,000 US troops in Iraq.

So far, the administraiton has talked only in terms of “general time horizons“.   But as noted here, both McCain and Bush have said they’d we’d leave if the Iraqis wanted us to.

So, where’s the agreement?

Responses to this post...

  1. Alan~ Can we get some discussion on the Salim Hamdan verdict today?

  2. Does anyone know where little Caylee is? I haven’t seen enough coverage of this story…

  3. These Iraqis don’t get to decide themselves. Only what the Republicans allow them to do…

  4. Damn Iraq trying to get an occuping force that bombed them into the Stone Age. You would think they could be a little more gracious to Dubya the Occupier…

  5. Cheney will speak at the the GOP convention. I bet that speech will be very stirring and bring tears to the eyes of every American. Tears of joy with the knowledge this monster is almost done…

Mr. Pee, when is the next Glenn Beck transcript gonna be up? I like hearing from that pseudo-Hannity…

  6. I don’t expect any kind of timetable from Bush, McCain, or Obama bc of the way things are heating up in Afghanistan. We’ve lost 500 soldiers there in the last 3 months. At least 600 civilians have died there since January. Al-Qaida is still there, and also has a presence in neighboring Pakistan.

Thanks to Bush’s false war in Iraq, there’s an increased terrorism presence in the country. I think what we’ll see happen is a transition of forces from Iraq to Afghanistan. There are currently 33,000 troops in Afghanistan, with Bush wanting more.

Afghanistan is where this war should have been focused from the beginning. That damned oil hungry Bush focused on Iraq instead.

It’s interesting to note that Obama began his tour of the Middle East in Afghanistan. (Go Obama!) Perhaps with proper and honest strategic planning, we can actually deal with real terrorism threats.

  7. Bush and Cheney are robots and need oil for their joints….

  8. Fury~ I don’t know where Caylee is, but I do know that her mother needs to be throttled. I’m so serious, too. She’s acting like her daughter being missing is no big deal, like the kid’s playing an extended game of hide-and-seek or something.

When did Cheney decide to attend the convention? I’ve gotta catch up on my morning news.

  9. Question?

What color terrorist banner are we supposed to be flying while Bush is in China?

  10. LOL, Frank.

Have you guys heard about the Russian invasion of Georgia (the country) yet? Let me tell you why this sucks (in addition to obvious reasons).

Georgia is second to the UK in the number of troops they’ve sent to help us in Iraq. Now they’re busy with their own war, which means those troops will be leaving (see Wikipedia excerpt below). Now, South Korea is the third largest supplier of troops. Remember that their president is still dealing with citizens concerned about the safety of our beef. He has to satisfy his citizens on that issue before he can send more troops to Iraq.

    * Flag of Georgia (country) Georgia – 2000 troops deployed near the Iranian border as of October 8, 2007.[22] Politicians have stated that the contingent will be reduced to 300 in summer 2008.[23] Georgia’s contribution to the Coalition originally consisted of 300 special forces troops under U.S. command in Baqouba, who guarded two bridges as well as American Forward Operating Bases ‘Caldwell’, ‘Warhorse’ and ‘Gabe’. 550 more troops were deployed in June 2005 for UNAMI, although these were placed under U.S. command on a dangerous ‘Middle Ring Security’ mission in the Green Zone.[24] On March 9, 2007, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili announced his plans to increase total Georgian troop strength in Iraq to 2000, by sending an extra 1,200 troops and moving those already in Iraq to join the new unit.[25] As of July 2008, five Georgian soldiers have died in Iraq (one in a vehicle accident, one committed suicide, while three died in combat) and 19 were wounded.[26]

Following the outbreak of war between Georgia and Russia on August 8, 2008, Mikheil Saakashvili said that Georgia was pulling its 2,000-strong troops from Iraq.[27]

  11. “so far the Bush administration hasn’t agreed to it”

It doesn’t matter. Bush is history in six months and it’ll probably take longer than that to extract the forces just for reasons of logistics.

  12. The Bush Administration won’t let Salim Hamdan go after his 51/2 year sentence is served. He will still be an enemy combatant. Let’s hear it for the Constitution! U-S-A! U-S-A!

  13. Glenn Beck supports the view that “Dark Knight” is a tribute to George Bush:

Beck: One of the ways they catch the Joker, is through eavesdropping. The parallels of whats’ going on is to me, stunning.

This was from Olbermann’s show last night in his Worst Person in the world segment. Glenn Beck, jackass…

  14. Is your five minute hate over yet?

  15. Is yours?

  16. When it comes to THIS war, and the next (Iran?)….Why don’t we just let BP, Shell and Exxon Mobile use their enormous profits, hire Blackwater and have at it?

Just keep our kids, and our treasury and our name out of it!

  17. Vinnie Pee lecturing me? What a joke! Your hate filled bile you spew daily and now your offended? My hate for you will never end, Mr Pee….

  18. The Left wing are the experts at hate.. that’s about the only emotion they show.

  19. Vinnie is the expert at hate. That’s about the only emotion he shows.
    Fixed

  20. Cheryl, you wrote: “Thanks to Bush’s false war in Iraq, there’s an increased terrorism presence in the country. ”

you should be ashamed for such a false and revisionist history statement, why do you hate the truth? That statement is DNC propaganda invented and tested and regurgitated but its a lie and the premise behind it is a lie, and saying it makes you either a person who ignorantly propagates a lie, or if you know its a lie, and you say it? then it makes you a liar.

Are there more terrorists in Irak since 2003 when the USA correctly (and finally) did the correct thing by invading Irak?

thats not the point, nor do you even care nor does anyone who spouts this one care. the juicy part is blaming Bush and Cheney for this “unnecessary” war; in fact the war was correct, necessary, legal, justified, timely if not late, based on facts, proven to be correct by not only the USA but our Allies.

Saying unnecessary war is worst than spitting in the fact of each and every soldier in combat; you can imagine how much respect you deserve or anyone deserves for saying such disgusting, errored, anti American and asinine things!

youve got the internet, why dont you learn the facts of the war? so much information is available but you Cheryl and so many others on the left refuse the truth and stick to the lies of “unnecessary war” to insult the US Military to the maximum possible insult.

you liberals accuse Bush of lying? when he NEVER lied? and what do you care of lying anyways? its not like lying is somehow wrong

Whether its Hussein Obama or Hillary, either one or both oppose the war in anti American ways

  21. and now your offended? My hate for you will never end, Mr Pee….

    by FuRyUs August 8, 2008

such a statement is not only illogical, but undignified.

  22. Cheryl and everyone, I meant to write that the left saying: “unnecessary war” is like SPITTING IN THE FACE OF THE SOLDIERS IN COMBAT

not spitting in the fact, but well maybe its also spitting on the facts.

oh hi, my name is (liberal) and Im going to go onto the internet and find some facts about the Irak war, print them out and then spit on them. why? because Im a liberal and I hate the truth and I want the democrat candidate to win just because they will be okay with immorality, lying, cheating and stealing and free welfare/socialism for your vote. why work? be a liberal slacker who spits on the facts.

And when the Troops come home? if the famous Hollywood celebrities spit on the Troops then the rest of the liberals will do it too
