No, it’s not, but it’s also not ok to ever behave in a way that a reasonable person knows could drive his or her significant other into another person’s embrace. A man that batters his wife to the point of making her terrified to evenleave, for example, should not be surprised if she happens to find comfort in the arms of a more sensitive man, or woman, as could be more likely if her husband’s abused causes her to fear male companionship. That’s an extreme case, though.
August 13th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
Is that like:
Woman: My husband beats me.
Man: Well, would you like to have sex to make you feel better?
August 13th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I think there is an incredibly WIDE range between:
‘If you ever cheat on me, I’ll kill you’, to ‘As long as you are leaving me alone…’.
It is the business only of those who are directly affected.
Everyone else are just busybodies.
August 13th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Adultery is apparently OK if you are one of the Three R’s: Republican, Religious, or Rich. Adultery is even championed on Fox News if you exhibit all three characteristics.
August 13th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
It sure is, Alan! Especially if you’ve been beaten and tortured for 5 years. Right Hannity?
I watched this last night, Alan, and I’ve got to say, you are a patient man. I don’t know how you deal with ‘lying Hannity’ on a daily basis. I don’t particularly like Obama, but he’s been lied about by the likes of Hannity and it’s disgusting. But, it’s just the same garbage he has always spewed on his radio show and tv shows.

And of course with McCain we get a “first lady” with the morals of a Reille Hunte.
And frankly it’s always been my opinion that something more than two X chromosomes is required before one qualifies for a descriptive like “lady”.
August 13th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Excellent Work Colmes!!
i stand up to applaud you on standing up against hannity and providing the truth over mccains affair!
there is truly a double standard in adultery among republicans and democrats.
people like hannity and Bill oreilly who supported the impeachment and did everything they could to destroy the clintons when they were in office when clinton cheated on his wife..
but when mccain did it, they dont even want to talk about it or mention it to get mccain elected into office! they dismiss it.
truly, i agree with hannity, this is truly a double standard!
August 13th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
GREAT JOB COLMES!!!!!!!!! Keep standing up to Hannity and by the way tell Hannity everyone knows he drives a Hybid by now so what!Oh by the way if and God please forbid if McCain is elected we will have to call Cindy 2nd lady not 1st lady. Can we really trust McCain to run our country since he’s always having having flash backs of being a POW maybe that’s why he wants our son/daughter to be there for a 100 yrs. YES I am a concerned mother who has a son who has been deployed for 3 times / a daughter 1 and a son-in-law 3 times. I pray every night for a man of peace not one like McCain trying to add to the 4000+ lives lost because of Bush trying to get revenge on Saddam for trying to kill his daddy. Colmes keep socking it to sean, genwich who is forever trying to critize Obama and not McCain. That shows how hannity flip/flop for the repulican party when they’re wrong. I read about the adultry of mccain months ago and wondered why it was sweept under the rug. Thank God it has surfaced because lots of ppls are unaware of the pain and suffering his put his first wife through but, it’s OK according to sean because he’s a former POW SEAN get REAL. Colmes don’t back down to the wimp sean hannity and God Bless You!!!!!!!!!!
August 13th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
When it comes to adultery double standards,
One of my favorite examples is:
Helen Chenoweth committed adultery and lied about it, while calling for the impeachment of Bill Clinton.
The Difference is…. She said, “I’ve asked for God’s forgiveness, and I’ve received it,”
Ahh, Good old Republican family values!
August 13th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Well, MY favorite was Newt Gingrich going after Bill Clinton for his adulterous affair while at the same time serving his wife divorce papers while she’s in the hospital so he can marry HIS mistress.
August 13th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
So Hannity says McCain spent five years as a POW and that excuses his adultery.
That’s moral relativism.
So a guy robs a liquor store, but he’s not responsible because he got savagely beaten and abused as a child.
August 13th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
I’ve had sex with a married woman, so adultery is AOK!
August 13th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Don’t ya guys know that if you are a veteran it’s okay. Whatever they do is fine. Oh yeah, and if you haven’t served in the military, it’s not alright to have an opinion…
August 13th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
no, it’s not okay. you should break up first.
In some cases it may be understandable, but this does not mean that it is okay.
August 13th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Mainly, I just doubt that people who are cheated on are as innocent as is believed.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Alan did a GREAT job here….just look at the panel’s po-faced reaction…it’s like they hadn’t stopped to think about how the whole issue comes back to hurt their candidate!
Hilarious.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Adultery is never okay. Neither is the hypocrisy of some who say that…and then turn around and do the same thing…..Like the Republican Party..the party that preaches family values…..and then try to make lame excuses when they don’t follow their own diatribes……
August 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
It is down right offensive for Sean Hannity to even try to argue that John McCain’s affair was “ok” because he was beaten as a POW for 5 years. Yes, I think everybody can agree that John McCain went through hell as a POW. But why would this condone cheating on your wife? It’s not even a rational thought! This is why I can’t stand Sean Hannity ~ he is so one-sided on everything, to the point that he will defend his candidate even though it makes no sense to do so (particularly since Sean is always preaching “family values” and keeping it “fair and balanced”).
I really liked John Edwards before he cheated on his cancer stricken wife. Now I think the man is a scum-bag. I would respect Sean so much more if he would have said that there was no difference between Edwards and McCain. Sean is your typical alpha-male personality and there are two components to alpha-males: 1. They always have to be right 2. They always have to win.
Alpha-males are the same men that voted for Bush and even though it is so clear he is the worst president in US history; they won’t admit it. They would die before admitting they were wrong.

August 14th, 2008 at 12:21 am
Adultery is like Homosexuality in Politics. Both are human acts that won’t help you get elected. It’s okay to enjoy sex, but not if you are a politician. The public trusts that what you portray is real. If they find out that you are having just as much fun as they are having as a non-politician, the public will move to impeach you. They trust you to spend their taxes on things that don’t promote sex. Somebody has to protect and uplift society or it’s “Sodom and Gomorrah.” Try getting elected by telling the truth and you’ll see how fast it’s “Party Time.” The wife of a politician is an enabler. She’s not in the relationship for the sex. She gets the poolboy, the kids, the house and even a Senate Seat if she plays a convincing victim.

NO ONE went after Bill Clinton because he lied about his affair with the Sperm receptacle Monika. They IMPEACHED him because he LIED UNDER OATH. PERJURY is a crime. He was convicted and he was DISBARRED.

Is McCain’s temper still on the table?
August 14th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Oh, give it a break, Johnny. (eyes roll)
The old saw that ‘it was never about the adultery, it was about the lying under oath’ has now been exposed for the lie that it is and has always been. If it wasn’t about the adultery, then Edwards’ affair wouldn’t be an issue with conservatives. And if it really was about lying under oath, then conservatives would have been first in line to hang Scooter Libby out to dry. Instead, we now get to see that lying under oath AND committing adultery are A-OK.
If you’re one of the cool-kid Republicans, that is.
Conservatives care very much about adultery. They’re just not willing to forgive any adultery that wasn’t committed by one of their own. OTOH, if you *do* happen to be one of their own, you can get away with bribery, adultery, lying under oath and propositioning undercover cops for gay sex in public bathrooms and still get to stay in the club.
Just give it a rest, Johnny. You’re not fooling anyone but yourself.
August 14th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
And that “cool” Democrat Bill Clinton get a free pass on perjury because “It’s just sex”.
You are not fooling anyone either Disabled between the ears….
August 14th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Hey Alan next time Hannity throws the POW argument out to justify McCain’s infidelity quote this little gem from McCain’s mouth..
“McCain himself admitted he was unfaithful to her in his memoir, “Faith of My Fathers,” blaming the marriage’s collapse on “my own selfishness and immaturity. … I cannot escape blame by pointing a finger at the [stress of] war. The blame was entirely mine.”

August 14th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
Yeah Alan…..Use HONESTY against McCain, You can’t do that with Bill Clinton….
August 14th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Alan, I’m proud of you. Here’s a link that puts it altogether, with Olbermann discussing Limbaugh’s habitual disgusting comments: Fox-pocrisy
To quote the text on the link, “Sean Hannity, gets into it good with an Alan Colmes who has recently become reacquainted with his cojones.” I like to think that we liberal listeners to Alan’s show have helped Mr. Colmes, uh, open up a bit more. :-P
August 14th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Johnny: “And that “cool” Democrat Bill Clinton get a free pass on perjury because “It’s just sex”.
Not from me, he didn’t. I didn’t vote for him, and since you weren’t paying attention, he was fined and disbarred for perjury. That’s not a pass, Johnny. In fact, when President Bush pardoned Scooter Libby, he pointed out how grave a punishment Libby would face in that he would be disbarred as a result of his conviction.
You need to pay closer attention to details, Champ. So far, you’re 0-for-3. If all you’ve got is name-calling, then take your ball and go home, boy.
“You are not fooling anyone either Disabled between the ears…”
I’m bringing truth and fact to the table, whereas you’re bringing nothing but lies, double-talk, double-standards and plain old-fashioned dishonesty. Furthermore, I’m a proud US Army veteran who just happens to have a service-connected disability.
And YOU are . . . what?
What have YOU done for your country, boy?
And why do YOU hate disabled American veterans?
August 14th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Hey Alan, way to finally grow a set of balls. You keep this up, I might actually tune in more to watch you rough up that pompous blowhard, Hannity.
August 14th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Cheating is cheating. It does not matter if you are Bill Clinton, John McCain, John Edwards, Newt Gingrich or David Vitter. Time is not an issue either. If it was one second ago or thirty years ago when the act took place. Some Conservatives claim that McCain’s time in Vietnam was trauma enough to excuse his infidelity. That is a cop out at best and a horrible excuse at worst. If we use that twisted logic then stressful situations can push McCain towards bad decisions. This is not even an issue in reality. Edwards cheating is of no consequence due to the fact that he is not even in the running for the Presidency. McCain is. But this is just like Conservatives to make a big fuss about sex and peoples private lives. They always exhibit their Puritanical roots when sex is involved. Lets talk about real issues and get away from tabloid mentality topics. How about energy, the 2/3 of corporations that have not paid taxes during the 1998 to 2007 time period, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Russia, Health Care, and any thing else that will actually affect our lives? What is even worse than cheating is when some Conservatives give McCain a pass on his cheating heart because he is a so-called hero. Hero or not, cheating is cheating.
August 14th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Yep, Where SEX is involved then PERJURY becomes a non-issue as far as Liberals are concerned so…..
August 14th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Johnny: “Yep, Where SEX is involved then PERJURY becomes a non-issue as far as Liberals are concerned so…..”
Actually, where Republicans are concerned, both sex and perjury are non-issues. Except when Democrats are involved.
In fact, if you’re a Republican, it’s okay to solicit and acccept bribes, to proposition Congressional pages, to get all dolled up in diapers and go trolling for hookers or to proposition undercover cops for gay sex in airport bathrooms.
Anything goes if you’re a Republican. Even ditching your hospitalized wife and then running for President with your ex-mistress by your side.
Family values my butt.
August 14th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
I don’t hate disabled veterans. I just happen to think that Liberalism is a mental disorder. Bill Clinton got a free pass from Liberals period. They protected him to the EXTREME. He got a free pass from Congress (Republican Congress) because he was not removed from office. That should have happened. Maybe then, you would see what a mistake ALGORE is.
By the way, if you really are a disabled veteran. THANK YOU for my freedom. I really mean that from the bottom of my heart.
What I do is not an issue here but I will tell you that I provide a service to the service men and women of the US Air Force. I think that qualifies me to say that I contribute to my country’s defense.
August 14th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
What I see is that everytime one of these “cheating Republicans” gets caught, the press raises so much hell that they resign. People like Bill Clinton do not.
August 14th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
So long as we are asking questions. Why did the Swimmer Teddy get a free pass from Liberal voters time and time again when everyone knows that he was there under questionable circumstances. He was drunk. He didn’t make any effort to get her out of the sunken car. He went home & slept it off BEFORE reporting it.
YET, he keeps getting elected. He will probably be elected next time. (Yes I know) If that isn’t a free pass, I’m just eaten up with the logic.
Perjury? NO. More like Manslaughter.
August 14th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
It’s amazing to me that people write these posts REALLY don’t see that the most partisan people on the other side think EXACTLY the same about them and their “pundits”!
Everything they say is said about them as well.
So Johnny,
I just happen to think that CONSERVATIVISM is a mental disorder. NEWT GINGRICH JOHN McCAIN AND DAVID VITTER got a free pass from CONSERVATIVES period. They protected them to the EXTREME.
ON the other hand BUSH/CHENY got a free pass, because THEIR sins against this country are SO great, No one wants to even acknowledge that this could happen in our country.
“What I see is that everytime one of these “cheating Republicans” gets caught, the press raises so much hell that they resign. People like Bill Clinton do not.”…….
Because THEY run on “FAMILY VALUES and MORAL SUPERORITY”!
The Republicans in Clinton’s time thought NOTHING, not even terrorism was more important than bringing down Bill Clinton, which is why his approval ratings were high, (73% after impeachment, 65% when he left office).
August 14th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Props to you Alan, standing up to facista boy Hannity. You should have thrown Gulliani into the mix as well. I thought the little doughboy’s head was going to explode. Here’s some more info next time you need it:
http://www.armchairsubversive.org/
By the way, if you didn’t know anything else about him, how can you tell that Edwards is a democrat in this day and time?-because he was having an affair with a woman.
Keep up the good work!
August 14th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Johnny: “I don’t hate disabled veterans.”
Clearly you do, since you came out of the box by insulting me, boy. You don’t know a thing about me, and yet you’ve called me “Disabled between the ears.” If you called me that to my face, I’d knock you on your punky little butt. >:(
Johnny: “I just happen to think that Liberalism is a mental disorder.”
And what, exactly, are your qualifications in the field of psychology and psychiatry?
Johnny: “Bill Clinton got a free pass from Liberals period.”
I’m not speaking for “Liberals.” I’m speaking for ME. Pay attention, boy.
Johnny: “They protected him to the EXTREME. He got a free pass from Congress (Republican Congress) because he was not removed from office. That should have happened.”
I see. Somehow, the mentally-disordered Democrats used black magic to render the majority-Republican Congress powerless to kick President Clinton out of office. I see how this works now. (eyes roll)
It seems to me that your complaint actually lies with the Republican Congress of the mid-1990s. Maybe you ought to be complaining about them instead.
Johnny: “Maybe then, you would see what a mistake ALGORE is.”
People who use silly names to describe their ideological opponents don’t deserve to be taken seriously. I don’t agree with much of what President Bush has done, but I still behave like an adult and refer to him as “President Bush.” If you can’t be bothered to refer to “President Clinton” and “Vice-President Gore” in the same way that I refer to “President Bush” and “Vice-President Cheney,” then perhaps you’re not worth my time and effort.
I thought I was having an adult conversation. Clearly I was mistaken.
Johnny: “By the way, if you really are a disabled veteran. THANK YOU for my freedom. I really mean that from the bottom of my heart.”
Go jump in a lake, you arrogant creep. If all it takes for you to call a disabled veteran names is for one of them to disagree with you politely, then you can take your thanks and stuff them where the sun doesn’t shine.
If you want to act like an adult, then you can apologize for your unwarranted and unprovoked insults and then give the thanks another try. If, OTOH, you think my disability is worth making fun of, then just shove off, punk.
Johnny: “What I do is not an issue here but I will tell you that I provide a service to the service men and women of the US Air Force. I think that qualifies me to say that I contribute to my country’s defense.
I don’t care what you do for a living. I don’t think there’s any occupation in the world that qualifies you to insult disabled veterans.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Johnny, do you really want an answer to your question, “Why did the Swimmer Teddy get a free pass from Liberal voters time and time again…?”
The answer is clear if you’ve ever lived in Massachusetts. They have oodles of teaching hospitals and clinics (for reasonable or no money) because of Ted Kennedy. He has consistently been a supporter of national health care, among other issues. (Oh, and as a Kennedy, he was raised to care about more than himself and give back to the community.) So, happily, the voters of MA realize that you vote for a senator and how he does his/her JOB.
So, Johnny, just how involved are you when it comes to other people’s jobs? Have you asked your dentist, grocer or gas station attendant who THEY sleep with? How does that really matter to your life? I personally would rather find the best surgeon to operate on me … and it wouldn’t matter if they were gay or had an affair outside of marriage.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
So Sean Hannity (and others) say that adultery is a symptom of someone who is, at core, a liar, and someone who is a liar is fundamentally unfit to be President. When confronted with McCain’s adultery (and, by extension, the fact that he is a liar and unfit to be President), the excuse is that McCain was a POW. Presumably, McCain never would have cheated on his wife if he’d never been a POW.
Hannity now claims that McCain’s time as a POW so deranged him that he was driven to adultery. McCain, unlike Edwards, is not a liar because he was, in fact, mentally damaged by his captivity during Vietnam.
What other facets of McCain’s personality have been so affected by his years as a POW? Was his involvement in the Savings and Loan scandal a result of this derangement? How about his opposition to the MLK holiday in Arizona? His flip-flops on abortion? His strange affection for lobbyists? His bizarre thirst for war?
I agree with Sean Hannity: adulterers are unfit to serve as President AND John McCain has been mentally damaged. I am grateful for his service, but he is simply unfit for the office of President.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Sure it is when commited by those such as “Democratic” idols like John “SYPHILLIS” Kennedy and William “Can’t Keep In My Pants” Clinton who not only engaged in this type of betrayal but had the blessing of their POWER HUNGRY spouses.
August 14th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
I respectfully retract anything that resemble an apology based on the half a$$ed remarks you made above Disabled. I was right the first time.
August 15th, 2008 at 7:56 am
Johnny, you are a coward, a liar, and a thoroughly reprehensible human being.
You’re dishonest, disreputable and despicable.
You need to grow up and learn how to act like an adult in polite company, and you need to learn how to get along politely with people with whom you disagree. Calling others ‘mentally disordered’ or “disabled between the ears’ is not how responsible and respectable adults behave, and I’m frankly appalled that you actually have to be told that.
You have no standing whatsoever to insult disabled veterans, regardless of what you may think, and your BS “apology” doesn’t give you any credibility. If you disagree with one or more disabled veterans, that’s all well and good — but you need to learn how to disagree politely, instead of being a disagreeable @$$hole. You’re a jerk, plain and simple.
As for me, I am honored to have incurred my disability in the defense of my country and my Constitution.
August 15th, 2008 at 9:01 am
WHO is name calling now… Do the letters FO mean anything to you.
August 15th, 2008 at 11:43 am
Grow up, little boy.
If you can’t do the adult thing and apologize for/take responsibility for your misdeeds, then you’re no better than Bill Clinton or John Edwards.
I replied to you politely and without insulting you, and you responded with an unwarranted and false personal attack. If we were arguing face-to-face, I’d break your nose for calling me what you did. I shall not apologize for returning the attacks of someone who attacked me first. I shall not apologize for giving you the same treatment that you gave me.
Ever hear of The Golden Rule, boy? If you don’t treat others the way you want to be treated, then don’t be surprised when someone you attack just happens to attack you back.
Effing coward.
