According to the Notable Names Database: “McCain’s great-great grandfather William Alexander McCain owned a Mississippi plantation and 52 slaves, until his death fighting for the Confederacy in the US Civil War.”
“…other American prisoners of war who cooperated with their Vietnamese captors to a lesser degree than McCain faced prosecution for violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and were given less than honorable discharges.”

John McCain is a coward…

What relevance is his family’s slave ownership during the civil war and before?
My ancestors had slaves.

Last night Alan touched on something that went largely unnoticed. He pointed out how Roe V. Wade has stood up through all the different administartions, congresses, and courts for all this time. I have been curious lately as to how abortion staistics have changed since Roe V. Wade. I suspect it’s not that much. It probably fluctuates from year to year, but not drastically different since 1973. Good luck trying to find the unbias truth on those numbers.
That leads me to this. The only reason abortion remains such a hot button issue is because people are making a HUGE amount of money in the name of pro-life. They send mail to peoples homes with a picture of an unborn fetus on the envelope, then tell you if you don’t stuff the return envelope with money, the fetus will die. Churches of all denominations across the country get the flock all revved up,(some better than others) then pass around the plate. They have to keep it a hot button issue, because if the controversy goes away…so does all that money. Just a thought.
Thanks Alan and crew for giving all of us this outlet.
Before I go, try another Pic Pick soon please. You cant just give us one of those, then take it away.

Abortion is only funny in the context of a roast. For example, see the Bob Saget roast that was on this weekend.

“What relevance is his family’s slave ownership…”
Well, according to the current political dynamic relevance is irrelevant. And it doesn’t matter what you say. It only matters what people hear.
We have to keep up with the times, right?

Hello Bob the union man, FuRyUs, RC, Jersey Jeff!
I will post here rather than the chat because it keeps telling me I am posting too fast & need to slow down. It won’t put my message thru. This was the very first time I sent a message to the chat tonite so I don’t understand this? Seems like other folks are getting several messages on in a row.

Of the $3 trillion federal US spending this year, about half will go to “welfare” spending.
“Welfare” includes Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid.
20% of the budget goes to defense and 10% services the national debt.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Jeff, I cetainly agree with you about the $$$ in the abortion issue.
I believe that anyone who wants abortion to be illegal will increase the number because women will continue to have them anyway (as they did before 1973) and because they will not get professional help there will be fewer who will receive counseling about other options (and more women will die or become very ill).

I’m “tired” of people like Richard Viguerie.
If there’s any unrest “out there”, the building unrest is probably about to be directed at Richard and his fringe, rightwing cohorts.

“Help” for the down-and-out from a church group comes with a price that government doesn’t require.
A sermon. The church groups make you sit through a “re-education” class before they extend their hand in aid.
August 20th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Hey Mary, I got the “slow down” message too. I guess that means we have too much to say, heh.
Eat your vegetables. Don’t talk with your mouth full. I’m regressing.

John the Trucker: still, a legend in his own mind?
Pantywaist [pan-tee-weyst] – noun. A weak, effeminate man; sissy.
Typically, your average pantywaist “needs” to carry a firearm for protection. Without the extra help from S&W, he’s weak and he’s a sissy.
The rest of us are perfectly manly and safe unarmed.

Ala kept asking where would one get the money to balance the budget except to raise taxes. Righting the trade deficit would help. Also, how about doing away with the IRS and the current tax system completely and simply tax 10 cents (10%) of every dollar spent for food or commodities in the country buy every person. This is the only FAIR way. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you make or even how you got the money. Every time a dollar is spent by anybody, 10 cents goes into the government coffers. They would have so much money that every program any senator or rep. wanted to make up to give money to the undeserving individuals who are to lazy to get a job would be able to be funded. The country could afford to pay for the ability to protect ourselves many times over and still have money left over. But we can’t do that because it makes to much sense. And politicians don’t want that. The individual congressmen and women don’t want a system like this in place because they all have their hands in the cookie jar and are getting kickbacks in one way or another. And of course, them getting their share is much more important than balancing the budget, or taking care of the lower class and needy people of this country. Or funding the war on terror. It doesn’t matter who gets elected, the fundamental basics of the broken system will not change because the Human element is only looking out for themselves. The greater good is overlooked because of greed and a self serving attitude by all the candidates. They don’t pay for gas so they don’t care about gas prices. We pay for their gas with our taxes. So we are getting screwed twice. Fully 1/3 of what I make goes to taxes while they [most of whom have lost touch with what the american people want] are living large. Doesn’t anyone else feel upset about this? And another thing, Obama says he wants to tax the wealthy and redistribute their money to carry less fortunate individuals. NEWS FLASH…Obama and all the others in congress are part of the “wealthy” he is talking about. Do you really think he is going to take money from his own pocket to do this. Not a chance. As always politicians always mean what they say to apply to other people, not themselves. This country is failing because self-centered, egotistical people, who think they are better than you or me, are lining their own pockets, seeing who can out do each other with pork barrel spending, and playing he said she said, instead of putting the best interest of the country and the american people first.

You were actually very polite Wednesday night. I didn’t change over to Lionel. You allowed your callers to state their opinions without any sarcasm or shouting them down. Good for you. Keep it up and I may stick with you.

10% on every dollar is not fair. If it were any cabal of robber barons could eat sunflower seeds [until they owned everything], and all the while plot super mergers to end all mergers…and the whole thing would be completely legal. No, taxing income is fairer.
Our society has become un-natural. I saw Paul Solman interviewing the hi-tech high school founders. Hey, what about the overall production direction? Are the kids supposed to come up with THAT themselves?
My theory is…all the stupid burn-outs put us in shock & the blues. [actually all the burn-outs and grey fields define a direr national predicament than even Kucinich describes] In this state people can remember to voice opposition only to a limited number of tragedies. They’re in shock. They can remember abortion cause it’s hammered by the Pubs (as a black hole absorber of idealism). They don’t advocate stoning gluttens. Pubs don’t hammer that.
Just had to check out the new posting format (but I mean what I say).
