SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — U.S. immigration authorities to end “self-deportation” program after only 8 people volunteer.

Duh

Responses to this post...

  1. If the Department of Commerce required employers to pay all their consignees minimum wage and grant reasonable vacation time for each and every contractor, immigration would grind to a freezing halt. Of course that would inconvenience the Republicans who need immigration to get around the minimum wage laws and OSHA regulations they detest so much.

The legacy of slavery lives on.

  2. Last May, the feds busted a kosher slaughterhouse in Postville, IA for employing illegal aliens.

1/3 of the workforce was arrested and 3/4 of the workforce were reported to be using stolen SS numbers. Reports of various labor law violations followed. Violations including paying less than the minimum wage and off the books, not paying overtime, putting children to work and employee abuse.

That people stay here and accept this kind of abuse is only proof of how bad their lives were down south and not proof of how well they have things here. As noted above, this kind of “employment” only amounts to modern day slavery.

The mix of religion with the abuse is most egregious to me. I don’t understand why more of us aren’t outraged by it all. US immigration and labor authorities should be applauded for their efforts.

  3. I for one would like to know who the 8 people are who volunteered, and why the heck they chose to do so. Weird.

  4. This just goes to prove out the Peter Principle, first published some years ago, which states that you keep getting promoted until you reach your level of incompetence, and then you stagnate and fester, and then, purely out of desperation, you come up with a lot of stupid ideas.

Like the guy who decided, back before September of 2000, that two fighter aircraft were enough to defend the east coast of the United States.

    Good job, Brownie.

Exactly. Business owners are republicans. They are also the evil rich. Taxing businesses will only hurt those evil republicans.

As noted above, this kind of “employment” only amounts to modern day slavery.

Except they aren’t beat on a daily basis, lynched, and if they are not happy are free to quit and go elsewhere for employment. Wow, slavery sure is tough these days.

But seriously, isn’t your definition of “modern day slavery” quite offensive (ie: racist) to those that have actually lived as slaves, both in american history and around the world?
What’s next, complaining about america’s poor as the truly poor around the globe go without cable, xboxes, air conditioning, free education, choices of food, etc.

  6. Whoa. Wait a minute. T2P, you equate free education with xboxes? As if a free education in America is a frill?

    I hope I’m misunderstanding that…Surely I must be…

  7. Hey Alan, comrade, isn’t it about time you self-deported?

  8. you first Joe!

  9. Whoa. Wait a minute. T2P, you equate free education with xboxes? As if a free education in America is a frill?

If you were living in a third world country you wouldn’t consider free education a luxury? If you were living in a third world country would you at least consider clean water delivered through pipes in your house a luxury?
My point is that americans have it so good we have no right to complain about anything.

Something that no one has mentioned is why this turn yourself program was started and then cancelled. My guess, now the government can use threat of force to round up illegal immigrants and return them to their country.

  10. Truth2Power, if I was living in a 3rd World country, I wouldn’t know from shinola, since everyone would be in the same boat.

And frankly, I often believe THEY will get a free pass to heaven for having limited possessions, turning the other cheek, living humbly and trying to be happy with what they have, rather than buying an 8th house and screwing their half-sister out of their dad’s multi-million-dollar inheritance. Or building a billion-dollar religious dynasty that promotes an attitude toward America’s poor that’s similar to yours.

What’s disgusting about your attitude about poor people in THIS country, is that you seem to think it’s acceptable behavior to flaunt a materialistic lifestyle, while blaming America’s poor for their needs.

What’s next, complaining about america’s poor as the truly poor around the globe go without cable, xboxes, air conditioning, free education, choices of food, etc.

Don’t delude yourself, T2P, there are plenty of people in America who don’t have running water, electricity, education or housing. What’s funny is, you don’t want people like that living here, and you don’t want anyone from those other countries moving here, either.

Why don’t you worry about enriching EVERYONE in your own country, T2P, and then look beyond America’s borders.

I love getting email from my wealthy Religious Right relatives, asking for money for their mission trip abroad, when they could spend that money and time in the ghettos and rural areas of America.

How about putting America first by combatting her poverty, T2P? Oh right. Because even ASKING business owners to institute a higher minimum wage would be like asking them to move to China…where worker rights are nil. Would you prefer American workers adopt the labor standards of China?

Why do you believe people in third world countries are so ignorant not to know shinola since their neighbors are just as poor? So the poor in america don’t know they are poor because every one around them is also poor?

And frankly, I often believe THEY will get a free pass to heaven for having limited possessions, turning the other cheek, living humbly and trying to be happy with what they have, rather than buying an 8th house and screwing their half-sister out of their dad’s multi-million-dollar inheritance.

Well then, in your opinion the poor are actually better off.

Your envy of others speaks volumes about you.

Or building a billion-dollar religious dynasty that promotes an attitude toward America’s poor that’s similar to yours.

I believe my attitude about the poor is much productive than yours. You want to give to the poor, I want the poor to take responsibility for their own lives and take full advantages of all the opportunities in this country.

What’s disgusting about your attitude about poor people in THIS country, is that you seem to think it’s acceptable behavior to flaunt a materialistic lifestyle, while blaming America’s poor for their needs.

Did I say I don’t want poor people living here? Nope. So don’t put your words in my mouth, it shows everyone that you”re unable to make your point without lying.
Their needs of an xbox or cable? There are government programs that make sure the poor have the necessities of life. Food stamps, section 8 housing, etc.
    Your class envy is, well-
“Class conflict is a term long-used mostly by socialists, Marxists, and anarchists”

Why don’t you worry about enriching EVERYONE in your own country, T2P, and then look beyond America’s borders.

This country gives everyone the right to enrich their life as they wish. If someone doesn’t like being poor, get a skill that is in demand and become rich. Ever hear of Oprah? If the american dream isn’t possible please explain how a person tthat was 1. black, 2. female 3. overweight managed to succeed with all odds stacked against her.

Want a better life, simple. Here are the rules.
    1. Finish school
    2. get a job
    3. get married
    4. have kids
In that order. That has been PROVEN for generations to be a successful plan for a better life. Should I go around and use force to make sure everyone finishes school? Why are so many poor high school dropouts? That girls don’t get pregnant and have multiple babies with different daddies. Why are so many of the poor saddled with numerous children? Their lives are their responsibilities. You nor I can stop someone from being a drug addict, they have to do it for themselves.
The question you posed about helping outside this country was asked of Oprah when she put her money into africa to help young girls. She answered somethinig like – In this country the only thing stopping you is yourself, in other countries you don’t have the opportunity.

I love getting email from my wealthy Religious Right relatives, asking for money for their mission trip abroad, when they could spend that money and time in the ghettos and rural areas of America.

Again, you must hate this idea of freedom and choice.
Are you aware that conservatives give more to charity?
“To test them, ABC’s “20/20″ went to Sioux Falls, S.D., and San Francisco. We asked the Salvation Army to set up buckets at their busiest locations in both cities. Which bucket would get more money?”
    http://townhall.com/columnists/JohnStossel/2006/12/06/who_gives_to_charity
If you are afraid to follow the link, the town of Sioux Falls contributed twice as much as the rich/affluent san fran.

If someone makes bad life decisions how can you/I help them. Google this… How many winners of lotteries end up bankrupt. Why? Because they didn’t have what it took to earn the millions of dollars they won so they didn’t know how to use their money best and not waste it. Just like
so many families after being given a (ABC) “Extreme Home Makeover” take out huge loans against their new houses and end up in foreclosure.

How about putting America first by combatting her poverty, T2P? Oh right. Because even ASKING business owners to institute a higher minimum wage would be like asking them to move to China…where worker rights are nil.

Obviously you have never employed people. Suggestion, open a business and pay people more than they are worth and see how that works out for you. Have you ever gotten a raise? Why? Did it have anything to do with you having increased your value to your boss?
Minimum wage is not designed to support a family, it’s for people just starting out in their working careers. If someone is in their late 20’s and working for minimum wage they have things to fix about themselves before an employer is forced to pay more for something.
Do you understand enough about economics to understand that raising minimum wage will cause layoffs? If a business owner is paying a 25 year old to do the job an 18 year old can do equally well why pay the 25 year more money just because he’s older and has kids.

I appreciate and applaud your concern for the poor. Deal with the issues that cause them to be poor and don’t blame “the rich” for the conditions of the poor.

What are some of your suggestions that would help the poor?

  14. For all your blather, there’s only one thing that needs to be spotlighted:

“I believe my attitude about the poor is much productive than yours. You want to give to the poor, I want the poor to take responsibility for their own lives and take full advantages of all the opportunities in this country.”

Well, my darling. Somewhere in the middle, perhaps there’s a solution, isn’t there? And no, I don’t believe in “giving” things. I believe in education and helping people help themselves, by letting them know WHAT the opportunities in this country are. By what you’ve written, you seem to be interested in sitting back and watching people struggle blindly.

Incidentally, I can’t believe you yelled at me yesterday for referencing Larry King’s explanation of how conservatie books become best-sellers, and here you are pointing me to a Stossel link on a conservative Web site. That speaks volumes of your disconnect between goose and gander (why don’t you Google that, too, you Google-maniac).

I did read it though, and it seemed to emphasize that POORER people give more of their income. Not necessarily conservative rich, as you seem to interpret.

“Do you understand enough about economics” to realize that if people aren’t being paid shit, the economy is going to grind to a halt? It’s not so much class feeling as common sense. Apparently, Bush was a bit aware of the importance of keeping spending going, since he was urging everyone to shop after 9/11, and he gave us these chumpy stimulus checks.

These child tax credits. Not a form of welfare for the middle class, then?

You’ll have to excuse me now. I have to go out and urge the poor to go out and succeed like Oprah, while I play my xbox and eat my caviar like a good Religious Republican.

  15. The people here illegally are not asking for asylum, or attempting to register as citizens. They are here using false documents, and identification. If anyone of you wish to accuse any nation of slavery, point your finger at their respective countries. By the way, if illegal immigrants are working in jobs Americans won’t do, who the hell worked in these jobs before the illegal immigrants began sneaking in? I say catch these law breaking bastards and throw them out.

  16. The illegal immigration debate is unique, its where the far right conservatives are simply flat wrong.

The mindset of rounding up all the illegals and sending them to prison or ? is as asinine as when the liberals decry the Irak war and say lets surrender.

This is an area where Sean Hannity is flat wrong and makes errored statements.

Both GW Bush and John McCain have the correct viewpoint on immigration, its where the far conservative right has a temper tantrum, makes delusional remarks (and Im talking about congress persons or media talking heads)

thanks to the stupidity of the far conservative right, the majority of them stayed home in Nov 2006 instead of vote GOP so that Nancy Pelosi could take over. thanks alot BASTARDS!

  17. Its easier to hand out ropes and ladders then to have this program. I think I will open a hardware store just south of the wall? I need some extra cash.

  18. Well, my darling

I’m not your darling. Do you think being condescending is becoming of a lady? :)

by letting them know WHAT the opportunities in this country are. By what you’ve written, you seem to be interested in sitting back and watching people struggle blindly.

Why do you believe the poor don’t know the opportunities available in this country. Are the schools failing in their job, maybe the parents failing?
I wouldn’t sit back and watch, another lame attempt at painting me the way you want.
Let me ask, how would you convince the poor to stay in school? Or convince the young girl to use birth control and not have 5 babies with 5 different fathers. To not get involved in drugs, crime, etc. How would you, Sarah, help educate these poor people.

Incidentally, I can’t believe you yelled at me yesterday for referencing Larry King’s explanation of how conservatie books become best-sellers, and here you are pointing me to a Stossel link on a conservative Web site.

Sarah, I wasn’t yelling. If I was it would have looked like THIS IS YELLING MY DARLING!!!!!
If you don’t like the link cool. At least I provided a link to back up my claims, if you provide a link I would check it out.
Also, the thing about larry king is he’s in the entertainment business, it would be like me sending you a link to tmz dot com.

That speaks volumes of your disconnect between goose and gander (why don’t you Google that, too, you Google-maniac).

Damn, that’s the pot calling the kettle black.

“Do you understand enough about economics” to realize that if people aren’t being paid shit, the economy is going to grind to a halt?

If someone had value to a company they will be paid accordingly. Kobe makes more $$ than some scrub on the bench. A programmer is going to make more $$ at microsoft than the janitor. I have no clue what you do for a living, you increase your education and prove to your boss your value I guarantee you will make more $$.
If someone is being paid shit there are reasons besides the greed of the owner.
Of course I see life through my eyes and life experiences. I started out working as an intern, pretty much every year I’ve made more $$. Of course, my skills are getting better, I have a bigger collection of work to add to my resume, more people are getting to know me.

Bush was a bit aware of the importance of keeping spending going, since he was urging everyone to shop after 9/11, and he gave us these chumpy stimulus checks.

And the democrats recently gave chumpy tax rebates. What’s your point in calling bush out if the democrats did the same thing if not simply to attack those you don’t agree with.

These child tax credits. Not a form of welfare for the middle class, then?

HELL NO!!!!!!!!! (that was yelling at you)
They earned that money, they are being allowed to keep more of what they earned. That is definitely not welfare. Welfare is more like getting what someone else earned.

You’ll have to excuse me now. I have to go out and urge the poor to go out and succeed like Oprah, while I play my xbox and eat my caviar like a good Religious Republican.

Good, use Oprah as an example. She proves what this country is all about. That believing in yourself, hard work and making good decisions does lead to success.

  19. Truth2Power, if you’re actually asking me in a blog how to solve poverty in America, then truly, you ARE content to sit back and watch the poor get poorer in this country.

Child tax credits is definitely welfare. I mean, I like kids and all, but call a spade a spade already.

“Here, have a kid. We’ll give you more of your tax money back, even though the tax money would have been used to provide or maintain roads, bridges, education, etc. for the child. Don’t worry, we’ll make everyone else pay for your decision to have a child. It’s on them.”

The rest of your post is simply ridiculous. If you think a janitor is expendable, then deal with the next toilet overflow problem in your workplace.
