The Chat Stream

August 27th, 2008, 1:54 AM EDT

It’s one of the most popular features of this new site.  Yet, there are complaints. What do you like about it? What don’t you like?   What would you like to change?

We’re considering:

A special color or icon for when I post

Reversing the arrows, so the left arrow goes to previous posts

Requiring a log-in to participate in this feature.

What say you?

Responses to this post...

  1. Requiring a log-in is worth it to avoid impersonations. They already seem to be rampant. I also like the idea of having your posts in a different color so that they stand out.

Also, it would also be nice to have the option to open the chat stream in a new window so that there is more room to read/write.

It’s an awesome feature though Alan, we’re just trying to help improve it!

  2. 1) I’m enough of a fan to deal with it in any case.

    2) I find the current chat stream much harder to read than posts on the threads. I’m on a PC and the blue background of the “stream” appears to be a dark medium blue, or, in Photoshop terms it’s “6F87D3″ or R111 G135 B211. I’m using a Viewsonic still at factory defaults so I’m assuming my brightness is standard, and I don’t generally have any problems reading things at most sites I visit. I usually high-light the chat stream to read it. Note: the white text on the chat stream background is much easier to read.

    3) I read from left to right, so pressing the left arrow to go “forward” seems backwards (no pun intended).

    4) No objections to requiring a log-in.

    5) Alan’s a special guy so his posts should get special colors and icons. And actually if a post says “Alan Colmes” I’d like to simply assume that it’s really Alan and not some troll dicking around.

    6) My monitor is set at 1024×768. The blog content is centered and leaves margins of about 23% of total screen width. I don’t really care, but it seems odd that there’s that much empty space.

    7) I was a little bothered at first to be typing into this teeny tiny little microscopic box for the chat stream, but I’ve adapted.

    8) I find it irritating on those occasions when I’ve had to enter and re-enter my screenname plus my email addy multiple times when posting multiple times to the chat stream.

    9) It may have been a technical glitch, but I also felt annoyed on those occasions when the chat stream refused one of my posts because I was “posting too fast.” If we can’t post fast then it’s more of a chat “flow”, as in molasses, than a “stream.” Okay, sometimes I may be going a bit overboard (such as with this post) but I like to think of that as merely one of my more endearing eccentricities.

    10) If you wanted to do something to prevent the use of anatomical profanity, such as are generally only used in very detailed and graphic pornography, I wouldn’t object, because I find it annoying, and I think it serves no function other than to offend. Profanity like the F-word, on the other hand, I think has a legitimate use as an intensifier, and thus should not be disallowed.

  3. Requiring a login is censorship. The problem is Alan. He doesn’t have a monopoly on all good thoughts or liberal ideas. You can’t rule Liberland if your one. Democrats can’t beat a Republican as a lighter version. Affirmative Access is the enemy! Obama must remember where his Army is. We the People want a government that works for everyone. Bush failed and McCain backed him. It’s kind of like the relationship between Sean and Alan. True Liberals can’t get a show on Fox because Alan is in the way. It’s kind of like Abbott and Costello. Which one is Alan? The fat one that was always the butt of the jokes. Censorship is bad.

  4. If you are not one. Why can’t the Liberals have their own show on Fox? Nobody on the air can offer real Liberal thoughts. Are you hiring Fox?

  5. Censorship?

So is ease of opportunity to defame others ok?

  6. I mostly want one like the MSN chats of old.

  7. Hi Alan. Thanks for asking about the chat stream. I have some of the same problems or concerns as RC. But I guess the worst problem is that after I post a comment, if I want to post again, I have to erase my previous comment already posted but which is still visible in the comment box. I don’t know why it’s still in there but it is. Also the site is automatically refreshing itself so that if I’m posting and it refreshes I then lose what I’ve just typed before I click submit. Also have to type in my name again.

It is also hard to read as RC said and the narrow column makes it worse. And yeah the box is too small and so forth.

Anyway the site looks pretty good so thank you for keeping it going. My computer has not been working right and needs to be fixed and I don’t know if I’m going to have enough money to do so… well what can you do, right?

Anyway I will try to check in when I can as long as this machine holds out.

Take Care and Stay Well. Love Ya!

  8. I’m also in favor of a login to avoid “cloning”.

  9. Clowning too?

  10. It’s the clowns that clone.

  11. And it’s common knowledge that clowns are evil in the first place.

  12. IT is?

  13. Alan, I see nothing wrong with the chat stream, if it typed out in gold letters someone would complain because it wasn’t typed out in silver, you must remember Americans are inherently do-nothing armchair whiners and complainers that set around and bitch and moan all day and night long.

  14. uhh..??

  15. I liked the old “General Comments”, where you could see full commments all on the same page.

  16. The chat stream is just fine with me. I just hope we can all live up to WFG’s lofty standards of acceptable blogging…

  17. i would like to log into the website account to avoid fake people pretending to be someone else.

It will prevent fake accounts and you will know how many people have logged into this website account.

also, how about pictures? an inside look at H&C and the alan colmes show?

poll questions? video archives of the show!

a link to the AlanColmesRadio.com website show!

    links to democratic websites!!!

  18. Furyus is completely correct, and therefor I’m completely wrong. I’m especially wrong to have thought I could express criticism of a 2 year old. I’m terribly sorry for that.

    Remember: WFG=Scum

    Thank you and good whenever.

  19. Furyus, WFG, shake hands and make up. We’re all on the same side here.

WFG, even your posts can be silly and pointless sometimes (puns anyone?) ;)

And FuryUs, surely your finely-tuned sense of irony can appreciate the possible annoyance that anyone’s (even your) posts can cause.

BUT: both of you are witty and smart and a good read/laugh. Let’s not be petty, guys.

(There now, You probably both hate ME now.)

  20. 11) Epiphany is absolutely right. I consulted the Tome of Common Knowledge and right there in the entry for Evil was a picture of a clown.

    12) I’m not a do-nothing armchair whiner. Only babies and rice-burners whine. I’m a damn American and it’s my constitutional right to bitch and complain just as much as I want. Hell, it’s my patriotic duty to bitch and complain, and it says so right there in the constitution next to the right to free speech.

    13) Log-ins should be required so we can find out if Cecil Jones is related to Kathleen the caller. I’m really concerned that one day I’ll actually comprehend what Cecil’s posting about, and then the universe will be destroyed.

    14) Gratz to WFG and FuRyUs for keeping their feud so low-key over the course of half a dozen threads. You set a fine example for all of us! Why, the seething dislike and mildly acidic sarcasm is palpable.

  21. oh, and I like the chat stream… I’d just like it to update consistently and have a color for the “real” Alan.

  22. Puns are a blessing. Besides, I’m usually responding to things I hear on the show.

  23. The chat stream updates regularly, and the page refreshes every five minutes, which shouldn’t be too burdensome. The stream is purposely on the right, and it’s narrow because it’s only meant for quick comments.

  24. yeah, actually i meant the “recent comments seem to update oddly: telling it’s been 3 seconds since the last post when it’s more like 20 minutes.
    I think puns are hilarious, personally… :)

  25. … but I have heard them called “the lowest form of humor”.
Look, the point is, we all have our silly moments, and it creates a friendly, funny atmosphere (as I’m sure you will agree) I just hope you guys can be friendly again, because, honestly, I think you’re coming from much the same place.
Now i’ll leave you alone. ;)

  26. Login information for specific people to avoid cloning and different colors for you guys (on the show) when you post. Kind how the words of Jesus are in red in some bibles. And a window that opens up the chat stream instead of it being stuck on the side.

That’s all I got. I like it overall though.

  27. my likes and dislikes? I dislike the fact you liberals approve of abortion.

I think we should have this website where each person must enable the processor ID feature so each computer is locked to one specific person that gets identified and is issued a fingerprint scanner device.

If there is a login and username assignment, then do what the OLD foxnews forum used to do, if you reply you can click on a dropdown menu at the top where it says TO: and the default is ALL, or you can pick a username.

when you post it, this shows up when that person logs in as you have 1 new post to you.

    this is efficient.

the problem with having people post in these kings of blogs? comes from censoring the content. OH, you cant say bad words! OH, you cant say something not nice to someone else! this is your first and only warning! (in some cases: We will put a golden triangle next to your name!) to them I say shut the hell up and get a life.

  28. oh and yes different colors for when you post, Im not aware Alan that youve ever posted here except for the first entry.

We should also have a drawing for a Ruth’s Chris steak dinner coupon

  29. Sorry WFG. Just messin with ya. I’ll stop now. We’ve both made our points. I have too much hatred for others to mess with someone I don’t mind…

  30. Like Bradely for instance…

  31. huh? Furyus are you saying you dont mind me? you are nice and understanding. (blush)

  32. ^ Couldn’t agree more RC with everything you just said. Free speech is one thing; constant, gratuitous, abusive language is quite another.

  33. Ok, thanks, Fury. Sorry, too.

  34. Is this really Alan’s blog?

  35. palin is a pitbull

  37. Alan I am very disturbed by your constant attack on your fellow brothers and sisters ..it seems that the very life and breath that I have given you has been used to thwart hatred.

Do you expect me to condone this type of behavior ?

I should hope not.. Let there be no mistake, judgment shall befall all..rich or poor…..free and bond …race and creed

It seems that your current path leads to certain destruction, be not a hypracrite as your forefathers, but rather a source of wisdom to lead.

You have a very distinct background and heritage in which you fail to see the understanding there of.

man has continued to go down this broad path in light of what has been bestowed upon them by the living word.

Be not frightened but take comfort in knowing that all men are created equal in the eyes of God., and all men shall give an account of their deeds, thoughts, and intentions.

For all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory..amen….

  38. When they get all through with the Quixotic windmills, solar panels, they will not solve the main problem..
we cannot get from here to there without an auto..
except for a few large cities, there is no viable public transport. Can’t get to grocer, doctor or hospital without a car. Spend some of those trillions on providing public transport, hybrid fed…, and even high speed intercity trains..a windmill can’t keep me out of my car…a bus might.
