The fine folks at James Dobson’s Focus on Family put out a video (that they then removed from their website) asking for torrential downpours for Obama’s speech tonight.  Funny, as it turns out that such weather is a possiblity for next week at the Republican Convention.

We all know that God listens to James Dobson.  He’ll create the downpours all right.  But God is going to do it His way.

Responses to this post...

  1. God, Jehovah, Allah, Eloah, El, Ellah, or whatever name we use will send torrential tornadoes to the twin cities. This hurricane Gustav does concern me because gas went back up again because of this forecast. I bow and pray that this weakens. The folks in NOLA have lived through enough.

  2. Hmmm, You’d think their time would be better spent praying for rain in drought ravaged areas where people are suffering.

  3. In The Strong-Willed Child, Dobson draws an analogy between the defiance of a family pet and that of a small child, and concludes that “just as surely as a dog will occasionally challenge the authority of his leaders, so will a little child — only more so.[31] (emphasis in original)

When asked “How long do you think a child should be allowed to cry after being punished? Is there a limit?” Dobson responded:

“Yes, I believe there should be a limit. As long as the tears represent a genuine release of emotion, they should be permitted to fall. But crying quickly changes from inner sobbing to an expression of protest… Real crying usually lasts two minutes or less but may continue for five. After that point, the child is merely complaining, and the change can be recognized in the tone and intensity of his voice. I would require him to stop the protest crying, usually by offering him a little more of whatever caused the original tears. In younger children, crying can easily be stopped by getting them interested in something else.”[34]

    From James Dobson’s site:

    He’s talking about the father:

“He can even take his son with him into the shower, where the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger.” –excerpt from transcript

  7. Hey Alan:

    This is completely off topic…

What do you think about John McCain’s healthcare plan as told by his advisor John Goodman? Apparently if we just don’t say people are uninsured the problem will go away. Don’t you love Republican logic? Do me a favor and give em hell for it tonight on H&C. I’m sure everyone else on Fox will conveniently forget to mention it. You’re the man!!!

  8. Alan, have you seen the map of the US from a New Yorker’s perspective – the one that shows New York, California and “everything else”? Clearly that has to be your thinking. The Republican Convention is going to be in Minneapolis. That’s in Minnesota. About 800 miles from the top edge of the weather map you’re displaying. I know we don’t matter much out here in flyover country, but come on, when the map even has the states labeled…

On a more serious note, were you really offended by the praying for rain thing? I just saw clips on TV and it seemed like a lighthearted thing. Did I miss something, because I never saw anything really meanspirited? (Especially compared to things like “I hope Tony Snow is in Hell” and “I hope Dick Cheney dies” and…..)

    Gustav Threatens GOP Convention Plans

DENVER — Mindful of the pitfalls of hosting cocktail parties while Gulf Coast residents are being evacuated, John McCain’s campaign suggested Thursday that Republicans could postpone their upcoming national convention in St. Paul if Tropical Storm Gustav makes landfall over the weekend.

Accu-Weather storm trackers say nothing is impeding Gustav from turning into a hurricane before it makes landfall in the United States. Maximum sustained winds could reach 111 miles per hour.

“The storm poses a serious threat to lives and property next week along the Gulf Coast. All interests from the Florida Panhandle to South Texas should closely monitor the storm, prepare an emergency plan and stock up on supplies,” the weather agency wrote in a statement early Thursday afternoon.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has already said he would skip the convention, scheduled to start Monday and last through Thursday, if a hurricane barrels down on New Orleans and the Gulf Coast just days after the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds said delaying the start time is a possibility.

“Senator McCain has always been sensitive to national crises — in the 2000 race, he postponed his announcement because of the situation in the Balkans, and we are monitoring the situation very closely,” Bounds said.

Spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said the campaign has “contingency plans in place.”

Karl Rove, a former adviser to President Bush, said the big question is whether Bush stays in Washington, D.C., or travels to St. Paul to speak.

“He’s the one individual speaking Monday night who might actually have some responsibility with regard to this,” he said.

The Bush administration came under fire for appearing slow to react when Katrina struck New Orleans three years ago. Democratic speakers have reprised that criticism during their national convention in Denver, where so far no serious disruptions have occurred.

“The Republicans can’t seem to get a break when it comes to August and when it comes to the weather,” said Rove, a FOX News analyst. “I know this is being thought a lot about in Washington and at the White House and discussed and I suspect they will monitor it carefully and figure out what to do.”

White House press secretary Dana Perino said Bush is receiving “regular updates,” while David Paulison, the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is already in Louisiana.

She said it’s “premature” to say whether the storm will affect Bush’s speaking plans Monday in Minnesota. But she left open the possibility that Gustav could rain on the Republicans’ plans.

“Obviously a category three or four storm has huge significance no matter where it hits,” she said.

A Republican convention spokeswoman said planners are “moving forward with the convention,” but are monitoring Gustav’s course.

Just to be on the safe side, I recommend everyone stay away from the Republican convention site. Delegates can phone their votes in.

All the good music was in Denver anyway. The only singer showing up for the Republicans will be someone like Ted Nugent or Lee Greenwood.

I also liked Dobson’s surefire recipe for macho man-boys: Play ball with him! Roughhouse a little! Man him up! Order him to tell his mom not to give him any lip next time she asks him for a little help around the house!

    (ok, that last one’s mine.)

That’s why Barack will be a better role model for family values than McCain.

While no one doubts that this does happen, and while I know less black people than white, my experience is with middle class white women who did everything right, only to be left by the husband.
Many of these women had to take some help from welfare.
The kids get shuffled back and forth between parents, and ALWAYS the dads and their new wives are the ones with all the money,(even though they pay the minimum child support).

Like I said, I know more whites than blacks but the black families I know are pretty stable.

  29. No of course not Gayle as I have absolutely no sense of humor.

I’m being sarcastic of course. Jest my ass. It could have been meant that way but when ABORTION was brought into it, the possible comedy disappeared. And then so did the video from the site altogether.

  30. Old Lefty are you drinking again?? I was confused by your last post.

  31. Gayle,

The point is that in my white suburbs most poor single mothers are middle class women who were left by their husbands for younger women.
While their husband lives well with the new wife, they struggle.

Their kids don’t join inner city gangs, (they live too far away), but they drop out of school, get pregnant and do methanphetamine.

It’s not a problem cofined to blacks.

  32. What a pile of compassionate conservative scat that church must be.

With a hurricane force storm it won’t much matter what kind of building the neocon suckups have their little Fascistpalooza in – they still gotta get there, have electricity, and air conditioning or their pudgy little white buts will melt.

  34. OldLefty,
I’ve got a great idea! Let us all disregard the teachings of Jesus altogether, and forget about our own personal resposibilities. Lets live our lives by our own values, and moral standards. Lets follow the words and examples of the selfrighteous leaders, who are without prejudice, who fight for the civil rights of all Americans (those not coverd by the Constitution), such as Rev. Sharpton, Rev. Jackson, and Rev. Wright. Or, maybe we should all embrace Islam and the teachings of Allah. This would please Obama. The Muslims would embrace us, end their murderous ways, and we can all smell like camels, and would only have to wash our stinking dirty feet. I’m sure this would make you as happy as the rest of the swine in your pig pen.

  35. OldLefty,
Think of some the freedoms we could have living by our own values, and moral standreds. Everyone could indulge in the sexually perverted “lifestyle” of their choice (something only afforded to homosexuals today), publically if they wish (so our children could observe, or indulge in themselves), and not face penalties of imprisonment. We could ignore any debt without penalty of interest, and truly live the American dream in a ten million dollar home, as the teacher of his own christian understanding, Rev. Wright has accomplished. Of course this would also benefit the black society, who have been “down trodden” their entire lifetime by white society. Of course, The Reverend freedom fighters’ careers, that keep them stinking rich at the expence of their own “down trodden” disadvantaged, would be forced to find a new line of work.

  36. The Conservative,
So you are happy as a clam to point out the failings of poor black men, but seem enraged when anyone refers failings in middle class white men.

“I’ve got a great idea! Let us all disregard the teachings of Jesus altogether, and forget about our own personal resposibilities.”
    …………………………………

That’s the the job of Republicans!

Don’t forget, it’s the Bush boys who LOVE the Islamic dictators……better to do business with one dictator, than a messy democracy.
It was W Bush’s mother who calls Prince Bandar, “Bandar Bush”.
Republicans have ALWAYS supported radical Islam.

The Saudis raise money for suicide bombers, and spread Wahhabi madrassas all over the world, while Bush holds their hand, and Bectel, Vinnel and Halliburton are laughing at you and your bible all the way to the bank.
Meanwhile, the Saudi national anthem is “Onward Christian Soldiers”.

    As Bob Dylan said:

    “And the poor white remains
On the caboose of the train
But it ain’t him to blame
He’s only a pawn in their game.”

Rev. Sharpton, and Rev. Jackson are buffoons just like Rev Hagee and Pat Robertson.

I’ll take Rev Wright over the America hating right wing preachers any day.
If anything, he was railing about the injustice, (you can agree or disagree whether it is real or perceived injustice), inflicted upon the people by a powerful government, while the right wing pastors complain about the government NOT using it’s power to keep the people in line.

I didn’t realize that conservatives LOVED government so much!

  37. From Mad magazine, 2004:

GOP Campaign Ad If George W. Bush Ran Against Jesus:

    Jesus of Nazareth says,
“Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you”

JESUS FAVORS MORE GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS FOR WELFARE CHEATS

    Jesus of Nazareth says,
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

    JESUS IS SOFT ON CRIME

    Jesus of Nazareth says,
‘Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.’”

    JESUS WILL RAISE YOUR TAXES

    Jesus of Nazareth says,
But I tell you not to resist an evildoer. On the contrary, whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.

CAN WE TRUST JESUS TO FIGHT THE WAR ON TERROR?

    JESUS…
    WRONG ON SOCIAL ISSUES,
    WRONG ON CRIME,
    WRONG ON DEFENSE,
    WRONG FOR AMERICA!

  38. OldLefty,
Just think of all the other possibilites, and “achievements” your little demented liberal minds could accomplish! Of course, if we choose another “alternative” lifestyle, and embrace the teachings of Islam, more of the freedoms we already have, including most of the liberal ones mentioned in my last comment, would become null and void. Forget about even admiring the beauty of a bikini on the beach. However, we could spend half the working day in prayer, collecting a full days wages at the expence of our employers. We could indulge in polygamy, and slash the throats of our daughters should they shame the family. We would have to “adopt” a name such as Hussein too. However, we would have the “moral” right to murder and destroy Israel, and all others who do not follow and live by Allah’s commands. Wouldn’t that be grand?

    ……………………………………….

Because it’s YOUR religious wackos, who are EXACTLY like the Muslim religious wackos who want the government to legislate their version of morality.

You guys are the ones who want Christian Sharia law.

In the words of Frank Schaffer:

“When Senator Obama’s preacher thundered about racism and injustice Obama suffered smear-by-association. But when my late father — Religious Right leader Francis Schaeffer — denounced America and even called for the violent overthrow of the US government, he was invited to lunch with presidents Ford, Reagan and Bush, Sr.

Take Dad’s words and put them in the mouth of Obama’s preacher (or in the mouth of any black American preacher) and people would be accusing that preacher of treason. Yet when we of the white Religious Right denounced America white conservative Americans and top political leaders, called our words “godly” and “prophetic” and a “call to repentance.”

We Republican agitators of the mid 1970s to the late 1980s were genuinely anti-American in the same spirit that later Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson (both followers of my father) were anti-American when they said God had removed his blessing from America on 9/11, because America accepted gays. Falwell and Robertson recanted but we never did.

My dad’s books denouncing America and comparing the USA to Hitler are still best sellers in the “respectable” evangelical community and he’s still hailed as a prophet by many Republican leaders. When Mike Huckabee was recently asked by Katie Couric to name one book he’d take with him to a desert island, besides the Bible, he named Dad’s Whatever Happened to the Human Race? a book where Dad also compared America to Hitler’s Germany.

The hypocrisy of the right denouncing Obama, because of his minister’s words, is staggering. They are the same people who argue for the right to “bear arms” as “insurance” to limit government power. They are the same people that (in the early 1980s roared and cheered when I called down damnation on America as “fallen away from God” at their national meetings where I was keynote speaker, including the annual meeting of the ultraconservative Southern Baptist convention, and the religious broadcasters that I addressed.

You ARE the same as the Muslims that you hate so much!

  41. OldLefty,
I forgot one great important detail. As “liberal minded” Muslims such as America’s antichrist, Barack Hussein Obama, we could even kill on a greater scale, all the babies who survive abortion! 42. The Conservative,

Did you also refer to JFK as , John “FITZGERALD” Kennedy, so that people knew he was a “Papist.”?

As long as you are throwing around words like “Antichrist’:

Biblical scholars in Colorado Springs have uncovered startling evidence that Senator John McCain may be the Antichrist. Their conclusions, while highly controversial, may have a dramatic impact on the 2008 elections, since many Bible-believing Christians have already expressed doubts about McCain’s fealty to Christianity.
The analysis was conducted by the respected True Bible Society, and it will be published next month in the End Times Journal.

“What started us looking at this issue is the fact that Senator McCain has declared his intention to maintain US forces in Iraq for a hundred years,” said David Jenkins, a leading Biblical scholar. “That means that McCain wants to control Babylon for at least a century.” According to many scholars of the Book of Revelation, the Antichrist will try to rebuild the ancient city of Babylon in order to use it as a springboard for an international effort at world domination. Ultimately, the Antichrist will marshal forces from Babylon to spark a showdown with Christian and Jewish-led forces in the battle of Armageddon.”

I love how right wingers want to call liberals atheists AND fundamentalists.
I guess whatever “catapults the propaganda” for you.

As for the abortion issue and Obama, the existing law requires these babies be taken care of. Every respected source from the medical societies to moderate Republicans called the bill a cheap stunt, and were against it.
But don’t let the facts get in the way of Republican talking points.

And if you are REALLY so concerned, you better do something about the cheap crap coming from China.
The Chinese government who provides the cheap labor that corporations love SO much, by oppressing their people, also enforced abortions. But perhaps you love that because it is MEN who are making the choice for women!

  43. “If you look at the…youth being raised without fathers in their lives … having children that they don’t even want to care/know about. That’s not how I define a man.”

And yet you HAVE described Newt Gingrich. Or don’t you want to think about how his second wife had to take charity from her church in order to raise his kids?

Or maybe I’m thinking of his first wife. Maybe it’s the second one he divorced while she was in the hospital recovering from a cancer operation.

  50. Nixon Didn’t give them a trade agreement, but he gave them Pepsi:

    From http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/1986/03/17/67262/index.htm

(FORTUNE Magazine) – MANY mass-marketers dream of selling to China’s one billion people. Some think of the market less elegantly as two billion armpits. To PepsiCo, though, the market is mouths, and the People’s Republic is especially enticing: it is the most populous country in the world, and Coca-Cola does not yet dominate it. To pitch for the business, PepsiCo Chairman Donald Kendall, 64, turned his board of directors into a band of high-class traveling salesmen. In January he paraded them through China on an eight-day, four-city tour that cost more than $400,000 and had all the pomp and complexity of a state visit. Armed with a letter of introduction from former President Nixon

I think it’s crazy to assign all the blame to Clinton, (although he deserves his share), as if Democrats are forcing Milton Friedman style, unregulated free market capitalism against the will of the Republicans.

You can blame Clinton, but you can’t ignore conservatives like Tom Delay who said of the Mariana Islands:
“You are a shining light for what is happening to the Republican Party, and you represent everything that is good about what we are trying to do in America and leading the world in the free-market system.” He later called the Northern Marianas “a perfect petri dish of capitalism,” adding, “It’s like my Galapagos Island.”,

in spite of the well-documented threats to American security, criminal activity, violations of labor law, forced abortions and human trafficking” in the Northern Marianas.

  55. And yet you HAVE described Newt Gingrich. Or don’t you want to think about how his second wife had to take charity from her church in order to raise his kids?

Kewl Sarah, you love posting out the ills of the right.

I’m not surprised that you didn’t address the growing problem with society and only focused on a republican. That’s the kind of person your words show.

  56. OldLefty, you’re a star. Sooner or later fairness, rational thinking, logic and ordinary human kindness will be valued the way they should be, and the haters will be exposed as worthless empty vessels.

I love the way people like THE and Bradley try so long and so earnestly to make reasoned, persuasive argument for the forces of backwardness they support, then ruin it all with a sudden Tourettes-like burst of hateful, racist spleen worthy of their embarrassing little ally Suntan. Sad people.

  57. I agree, John McKee. We love OldLefty here because he is well informed and not afraid to take on the right.

  58. John McKee,
You first addressed me as a tough guy, now all of a sudden your the rational nice guy? What a putz. You were bullied, and no wonder.

  59. TDRO,
I’m ecstatic with your appreciation for OldLefty’s brilliance. He’ll just need to you to interpret what well informed means, unless he’s learned how to Google it.
