Technical issues
As some of you may (or may not) have noticed, Alan.com has been intermittently going up and down for the past couple of hours. We’re working with our hosting provider to determine what the problem is–something, somewhere, is overloading our server, and we’re waiting to hear back from the system administrator to see if they can help us determine what the issue is.
In the meantime, unfortunately, we’ve disabled the chat stream since it’s possible that it is overtaxing the database. Once we’re able to figure out what the culprit is, we’ll re-enable it (or some alternative).
If you notice anything that seems particularly strange, or if you get any error messages, please feel free to leave them as comments on this post–they may be helpful clues.

why don’t you guys consider moving the website to another host? Downtimes are too frequent…

BCC, the host itself isn’t the problem (we use the same company that Starbucks, Diesel and many other companies use). If we can’t determine what the underlying cause of the outages is, then there’s no guarantee that moving to a different hosting company would solve the issues.

I think it’s got something to do with the chat stream. It seems like whenever you disable it the site returns to normal.

We’re actually not using their grid system (though we work with people who do, and who couldn’t be happier with it). Something somewhere is overloading Apache on our server, and the key will be figuring out what that is.

Strange that Media Temple would be having this much trouble. They’re supposed to be at the forefront of “anti-crash” technology from the “Digg effect”, which I think Alan’s post greatly resembles.

What, exactly, is your major malfunction? Did you cite this [concern over 5-time mother Palin's prenatal care] as something that you actually believe has merit? Is it a cynical method to draw traffic to your site because you want more exposure and/or money? Is it some thought experiment to see how much bad blood you can induce from the ideological Right to make some disingenuous point?
Or is it because you’re just another offensive liberal hack among a growing list of them embedded in media committed to smearing those with whom you disagree politically?

The article did NOT suggest any such thing, and the first of the two links contained in it clearly stated that Down’s was a separate issue that was detected much earlier. The only people that suggested such a thing are the ones that linked you to the post. This is typical fanatical behavior — finding evidence where there isn’t any and acting out in a disproportionate and irrational manner.

What is the point of his pre-natal care post, exactly? She consulted with her doctor and together they decided it was acceptable for her to continue and have her baby in Alaska. And she delivered a healthy baby boy, Down Syndrome aside, which all relatively intelligent people understand is genetic.
Funny, how Alan and all of you other pro-abortion fanatics have no problem whatsoever when a woman makes a personal & private decision to murder her unborn baby because it was best for the mom. Alan Colmes is the “luckiest man on the face of the earth”, his good fortune of sitting across from Sean Hannity has allowed him access to mainstream society, how undeserved. I think he did the responsible thing. Now, if you had just stopped at calling Alan dirty Jewish baby killer, he maaaayy have let it slide. He didn’t say, “What kind of mother runs for VP with an infant with Down syndrome?” He didn’t say, “Did she take all of her prenatal vitamins?” He didn’t go as far as some Republicans as to ask if she practice sodomy in the bedroom as I doubt Alan (or other dirty Jews like myself if you want to keep slinging) is in the business of figuring out what people do in the bedroom.
No. Governor Palin made a very clear and very public questionable judgement call that endangered a seven month old fetus and…well, bragged about it.
But if those who dislike Alan or his political views want to turn this into something much bigger – and nastier – than what it is, you may think you’re advocating your own cause, but you’re really just using an infant child with disabilities for your own political agenda because you have nothing else to stand on.
And when that doesn’t work, you attack Jews and Muslims and black people.
Alan did the responsible thing by closing the thread. He’s a journalist and a public figure. And in case you conservatives forgot, this is also his blog. If he saw a thread spinning out of control because of its highly insensitive, bigoted, racist and ethnocentric tone, he had every right to make that judgement call.

It has NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH pre-natal care, birth circumstances, etc…..THAT is determined the very MOMENT of conception! It is an EXTRA CHROMOSOME and is a risk of later in life births….which the family accepted as the Will of God and they accepted the CHALLENGES of raising this “special needs” child…You have NO IDEA of what this means….have you ever even MET a Down’s syndrome child (or adult?) suggest to Sean that you invite a Down’s adult on the show to debate this with Alan….THAT’s one show I will watch! As the name of the article stated, it was questioning her judgment of taking a long flight after her water broke before having the baby delivered. Nothing more.
The evidence is that he doesn’t mention Down syndrome once, and that the first article he links to explicitly mentions that Down syndrome was found earlier. Plus, he has posted followup articles on the matter.

Just curious if you believe that the full frontal nude photo liberals are saying is Governor Sarah Palin. In fact, the photo in question, is actually Julia Louis Dryfus. Liberals just think America is plain dumb. How did they really think they could pass that off as Governor Palin?

I ran across your comments through a Drudge item relative to some idiot who was suggesting that Palin’s baby was actually the baby of her daughter. Then I ran across your entry on you suggesting that just perhaps Palin may have been at fault for the baby’s condition which it appears that you have denied. Quite frankly Alan I have spent the day reading the crap that have been entered on various web sites on Palin. Most of it from the liberals which I have concluded are sick. You are all mental cases. Some conservative bloggers are in that category also. Palin complies with the qualifications set forth by the Constitution. Liberals are artists at the Politics of Personal destruction. Unfortunately, you seem part of the that gang. There are issues out there that should be addressed, however, we cannot get to those issues because each of the attempts of defamation must be answered. I think it would be appropriate to look at your own house of cards and really analyze the people that you associate with. You may conclude they are all wallowing in giant septic tanks of their own making.
I fear for the long term viability of our country. I consider you an intelligent person however, on a scale of zero to 10, you have reached the zero point. Let’s hear and see something positive for a change.

Based on the vile comments about Sarah Palin, I have to question whether or not you are Americans or America’s enemies. Certainly not christian patriots willing to honor and serve your country. I hope the misguided comments against Ms. Palin come from newbies to adult society that are simply testing the limits of moral decency. You found the line kids and you crossed it big time. As for Alan, you are history and will be remembered for this disgrace.

I was so delighted to hear that Allan Colmes was done. So often I wondered why a person with some intelligence wasn’t sitting in his seat. I stopped watching Hannity and Colmes two years ago because I could not believe what was coming out of his mouth. The only reason he was sitting in that seat was a blood relative must have hired him. His stupidity was totally unacceptable.
