Will The RNC Become The RNT: “Republican National Telethon”?

August 31st, 2008, 3:19 PM EDT

Under consideration is a change of plans for the GOP convention where, instead of inspiring speeches about our nation’s future, the event is turned into a telethon to raise money for victims of Hurricane Gustav.  Unlike their agendas duirng Hurricane Katrina, Bush and McCain are rushing to show their faces on the Gulf Coast.

The contingency plan – a worst-case scenario if the storm devastates Gulf Coast areas – would turn Republicans into Red Cross-type volunteers who would help collect donations, food and goods for storm victims.

The Wall Street Journal phrases it as “a giant hurricane relief telethon.”

Ted Drummond at TPM suggest an ad the Democrats might put out in reponse:

DNC Ad: and Chris Wallace from tomorrow’s Fox News Sunday with the following quote:

Video of McCain

“It just wouldn’t be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a
near-tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a
natural disaster,” McCain told Chris Wallace of “Fox News Sunday,” in an interview taped for tomorrow.

Appropriately Scathing Voice-over, one suggestion: “John McCain doesn’t want to accept his party’s nomination while a major natural disaster affects the United States. But where was he during Hurricane Katrina?”

  1. Criticism is easy. If they weren’t doing this the left’d be asking WHY they weren’t. If the idea even had occurred to them, that is. I hope Gustav misses, but I think it’s a great concept. Once again: “can you say ‘Projection’? Sure you can. I knew you could.”

  2. When will you get it? Bush is Bush, McCain is McCain. Obama on the other hand, no one knows what or who he is. Or even better, what he stands for.

  3. Heaven forbid Gustav hit New Orleans. But if it does, I guarantee you the response will be more effective. You know why? Jindal’s down there running the show, not a bunch of lazy corrupt LA Democrats.

  4. Mr. Colmes,

You have unfinished business. Don’t change the topic to the weather. Mrs. Palin still deserves your apology. I simply ask that you be man enough to “deliver.”

  5. We are to believe that all comments cannot be deleted, and the original post by Alan about Palin’s pregnancy cannot remain (with comments disabled) ? Enough!

  6. Colmes:”Unlike their agendas duirng Hurricane Katrina, Bush and McCain are rushing to show their faces on the Gulf Coast.”

Yeah, they saw what happened last time when they let the Democrat look after his own city. Absolute devastation. So this time, the Democrats get just what they want — government intervention. Help or don’t help, either way, Colmes is gonna complain. The one thing he’s good at.

  7. What should the RNC do Alan? any pure and holy liberal suggestions? What can the RNC do to keep you from whining?

  8. Mark:”Mr. Colmes, You have unfinished business. Don’t change the topic to the weather. Mrs. Palin still deserves your apology.”

You can forget that. He’s on the Conservative’s radar for the time being. I wouldn’t hold your breath on that apology.

In the meantime, this post. Seriously, Colmes, a post offering suggestions to the Democrats for ads they could run in an election year? Journalistic neutrality, my foot.

  9. So now you’re criticizing them for being more prepared this time and learning from the past? You wouldn’t be happy either way would you?

  10. Actually Alan, Senator McCain thought that Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin were doing their jobs…..which they clearly were not. I guess Bush should have stepped in five days before Katrina, because Blanco and Nagin clearly weren’t up to their responsibilties. Competent at getting elected: not able to handle responsibilities. Typical liberals.

What exactly was McCain supposed to do, Alan? Go to Louisiana and take control from the legally elected Governor and Mayor. It would have been a good thing if he had, as history has shown. The grown ups are in charge in Louisiana now, and they are making sure that the liberal idiots are doing the jobs they should have done in the first place.

This is a better strategy, Alan, add more posts so people won’t be reading your ‘down syndrom’ defence post. Hope that people just don’t see it. Maybe Hannity won’t hear about it…but I doubt it.

  11. That’s right Alan.

The RNC is making sure that the corrupt LA democrats aren’t in charge this time.

  12. The RNC is making sure that the corrupt LA democrats aren’t in charge this time.

How does that excuse your Lord Dubya’s lack of response? Idiot…

  13. Alan,

You are not having a good day. I suggest you retreat now and surrender. Hold out a white flag and lie prostrate on the ground. Give up.

    OR

Apolgize and admit your mistake? Anything less is demeaning to humanity.

  14. FuRyUs:”How does that excuse your Lord Dubya’s lack of response? Idiot…”

Which lack of response? The one where W canceled his appearance at the RNCC to rush to the Gulf? Or his phone call this morning with Nagin to make sure NO was prepared? Or his meeting this morning with FEMA? All right here in The LA Times: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/presidentbush/

Man that W is really neglecting NO. /sarc

  15. How dare you Jack. I live in La and they were simply unprepared for Katrina (as was the federal government.) I’ve been following the preparation for this storm at the city (Democratic mayors) and state (Republican governor) level and they have been showing excellent leadership.

Blanco (the governor at the time of Katrina) may have been incompetent, but you can’t put all the blame on the state’s officials. It was the FIRST time anything like that has happened.

  16. Hi Andy,

He was referring to the lack of response to Katrina, seeing as Furyus was blaming the LA democrats for everything that happened.

  17. Obama has numerous times shown us that his judgement is weak and is only changed after pressure from hurting his campaign.

After all what women do with their bodies – babies is their own business, isn’t that the whole idea behind Roe vs Wade? What Sarah Palin choose to do, I’m sure she knew what she was doing since she’s had 4 previous children. Once again she has the experience to make correct choices while Obama promises that he’ll make the right ones.

Alan I’ve watched you on Hannity and Colmes for years, heard your radio show a few times. You don’t stand for your beliefs, you shut out anyone with a different view then your own and talk about how others do it to you. You asked about Palins judgement on being a mother, I ask about Obamas judgement when he decides to surround himself with people damning America.

  18. go ahead fury, typical liberal bantor. He/she did it wrong…yeah let’s take the spotlight off my idiot and put it on your idiot. I think Alan has been trying to do that already with his downs syndrome comments.

  19. honestly I just have to wonder if the DNC is po’d because this storm came in time to give the RNC a chance to show them up….damn that mother nature

  20. Gee, Alan. I mean, WTF?
Since when was doing the right thing cause for ridicule and scorn from YOU?
Just because this election cycle is catching everyone off guard is no reason to let the wheels fall off your personal wagon.

  21. From the article YOU linked , Alan.

“Palin stayed at the conference and delivered a 30-minute speech, then boarded a 12-hour Alaska Airlines flight from Dallas to Anchorage, neglecting to tell the airline her water had broken — most airlines won’t fly a woman in labor.

Palin was hospitalized immediately and the baby was born prematurely after labor was induced in the middle of the night.”

Okay Alan was she in labor or not in labor? If as you suggest she was in labor then why did labor have to be “induced” or did you miss that point?

The article YOU cited clearly implies that she was in labor.
“her water had broken” Could be labor? Water broken.
“most airlines won’t fly a woman in labor”
And airlines won’t fly a woman in labor, implying that she was in fact in labor, otherwise the statement makes no sense.

Let me help ya out here, Alan.

her water had broken — most airlines won’t fly a person with an sucking chest wound.

her water had broken — most airlines won’t fly a woman claiming she has a b0mb.

her water had broken — most airlines won’t fly a woman who is obviously falling down drunk.

Do you need more examples or do you “get it”?

Alan your post was CLEARLY an attempt at a smear, as is the article you provided a link to.

How did I come across your article? Oddly enough I was looking into another “smear” that the left wing morons had put out.

Do you know what one I’m talking about?

Yep, the one that said her oldest daughter was ACTUALLY mother of her “Downs Syndrome” child, not Sarah Palin.

So what we have are two smear attempts put out by left wing morons, and Alan the term “MORON” in this case is not an “epithet” It’s an accurate description.

“I in no way mean to suggest that her child’s Down Syndrome was in any way related to decisions she made. In fact I never mentioned Down Syndrome in the post. However, I apologize that my post was not more clear on that point.”

Oh please Alan, either your lying, an idiot or you think we are idiots.

“I in no way mean to suggest that her child’s Down Syndrome was in any way related to decisions she made.”

Then that should have been the vary fist sentence in your post. It wasn’t. Fact you NEVER mentioned Down Syndrome! Didn’t need too.

Just as we all know Biden’s been in the Senate for 40 years and takes the train home almost every night,

we know Sarah Palin youngest child has “Down Syndrome”.

Or were you referring to some other child born of Sarah Palin on April 18?

Say again Alan, either your lying, an idiot or you think we are idiots.

“In fact I never mentioned Down Syndrome in the post”

Alan claiming YOU’RE A VICTIM of YOUR “inartful” Smear attempt isn’t going to fly.

Please, be a man about it, acknowledge your attempted smear and make an apology ON THE AIR.

Alan some thing are not political. This is one of them. Clear?

  22. Does anyone else see a problem with the GOP trying to profit politically from this telethon? I think the idea of a telethon is great, but it certainly should not replace the convention. I would say just postpone the convention.

It’s too bad this is happening all over again to the people in the Gulf. I was watching some of the coverage this morning though and I think that everybody is certainly more ready this time than they were for Katrina.

  23. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Pathetic.

  24. Alan, on my website I have the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, and UNICEF linked on EVERYONE OF MY PAGES!

What have you done today but criticize Republicans for wanting to make a difference during their convention?

  25. It says so much of the Democratic character that no good deed can be accepted at face value, but must be somehow tainted and twisted.
    Stay lovely.

  26. So how unseemly that John McCain’s mother didn’t plan ahead to put his birthday on some other day.

Meanwhile, it is perfectly acceptable that Mayor Nagin couldn’t plan ahead to get the school busses out of their low lying parking lot and use them to help evacuate?

1/3rd of the New Orleans police force didn’t report for duty because they didn’t exist. Rather they were padding on the police rolls, so that corrupt officials could collect more money from the public.

    Stay classy Alan.

  27. This time they’re getting Georgie into photo-ops way ahead of time. So they look like they’re doing something.

So they look capable of doing something.

If they could walk and chew gum I’d call it a miracle.

  29. Republican National Telethon?

Damn, after obama demanded that recipients of the “free” tickets volunteer for his campaign this is an issue?

Has alan.com jumped the shark before he even gets advertising?

The Obama campaign has begun notifying people who got tickets for the big acceptance speech at Invesco Field the final night of the convention.
Many of those who received tickets told 7NEWS they have come with a caveat.
Those viewers said the campaign told them they must volunteer six hours for the campaign by Friday in order to get a ticket.

    http://www.thedenverchannel.com/politics/17174212/detail.html

Unlike their agendas duirng Hurricane Katrina, Bush and McCain are rushing to show their faces on the Gulf Coast.

God sure does work in mysterious ways.

Bush/cheney giving speeches would have been used by the liberal media to link mcsame & bush. Bush/cheney not showing up at the convention would have been used by the liberal media as proof that the gop is a damaged brand.

This way, bush/cheney can work to help out Jindal, who has already done more than the previous governor. This won’t be close to the same disaster katrina was, mostly because jindal is much better qualified to lead.

The only complain the liberal media can whine about is all the money that was wasted rebuilding.

  30. TIM: That is so true.. because after all the Dems claim they care and they actually don’t.. so you think to yourself why would anyone else.

After you get their vote fuck them.

    Right?

That’s why Obama keeps having new relatives pop up with an annual salary that couldn’t even pay for a scone.

But he cares for the “least of these”.. with other people’s money.

  31. Hey Colmes, why don’t you report on how Michael Moore said “Gustav is proof that there is a God in Heaven” or hoe Don Fowler said “God is on their side”…

You can watch the videos here:
    http://wizbangblog.com/content/2008/08/31/michael-moore-gustav-is-proof-that-there-is-a-god-in-heaven.php

  32. Gustav means “God’s staff”.

After Fowler’s comments about God being on the Dems side, we’ll see just how Gustav plays out.

I do know this. God has always been, is, and will always be opposed to abortion.

  33. Alan Why Would You Even think to question Gov. Palin’s prenatal care? I am so diappointed in you. You lost a fam of many years today. I was so angry today when I woke and read what I read that I called you a “dirtbag” on my blog and I never speak or write like that it just came flying out – I am sorry because two wrongs don’t make a right. Again, Alan I am so disappointed and I am sure all the moms and dads out there with Down Syndrome babies must be upset by your blog. I am glad you took down but I think Gov. Palin should get a big I AM SORRY FROM YOU.

  34. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/down-syndrome/DS00182/DSECTION=causes

  35. Alan – You post slanderous material from fellow Liberals and then remove said material and then claim you had nothing to do with it! Fox should fire your ass!

I am not in the least surprised… just another liberal hack job from a very unprofessional Democratic political hack!

  36. First time at this site, never had a desire to read what this guy thinks about anything. But I had to check out for myself the vile things I have heard attributed to Colmes about Palin. I thought to myself, no way he’s that stupid. But I see I was wrong. Then I see that he’s all up in arms that the RNC is going to turn thier moment in the spotlight into a platform to help those in need. He’s just pissed that he spent all weekend getting ready to attack the RNC and they did not play along. Sorry Alan, we are not all cold hearted bastards like you.

  37. Wow Alan. I never liked you before but I never thought you would stoop to criticizing a woman with a disabled child. Downs is a genetic disorder that is there from the moment of conception and has nothing at all to do with prenatal care. I take it from these terrible left accusations that you are desparate and have nothing legit to criticize the woman for. You must be nervous!!! WE are going to be in the White House again and there is nothing you can do to stop us!!!

  38. Alan, why is it that mostly Liberals like you make the comment they really mean and then when the crap hits the fan you say “gosh I could have been more clear with my comments”. Hog wash, you really meant what you originally said.

  39. The Republicans are damned if the do, damned if they don’t in regards to Gustov. If they had proceeded with business as usual at the convention, the Dims would have hit them with the uncaring card. Having done the right thing; postponed most of the convention activities; taken a more active role in preparation of the storm, they are grandstanders playing it up for the photo op.

  40. Hard to believe Alan Colmes can get more idiotic but he managed. I quit watching Hannity and Colmbs because of that moron even though it’s a pretty good show. I just couldn’t stand listening to his idiotic comments any longer. He must be a pretty dim bulb.
