A Joke Is Only Funny When A Conservative Tells It

September 1st, 2008, 12:45 AM EDT

Don Fowler, former head of the Democratic Party, told a private joke about how the hurricane hitting New Orleans around the start of the RNC proves “God is on our side”.  Obvous gallows humor, known to anyone who’s ever told a joke.  Unbeknown to Fowler, he was being secretly recorded, and decided to apologize for doing the same thing James Dobson did.  In fact, Dobson did something more pronounced by putting out a public video hoping for torrential downpours during the DNC,  that he later removed from his website.

Fowler was secretly recorded by the person sitting behind him while flying from Denver, Colo., to Charlotte, N.C., following the Democratic National Convention. His conversation with Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C., was anonymously posted to YouTube and highlighted by RedState.com, a conservative blog.

So now Fowler is saying,

“If this offended anybody, I personally apologize,” Fowler told ABC News. “It was a mistake, and it was a satirical statement made in jest. And one that I clearly don’t believe.”

So, when Dobson does a Pray For Rain at the DNC Video for public consumption, that’s hilarious, but when Fowler tells the same kind of private joke he has to apologize.

Responses to this post...

  1. Yes Fowler needs to apologize. Changes in the weather means God is on the side of the DNC? Give me a break. He’s insulted every person of faith, and weather men.

  2. no matter who made a joke or statement first, continuing the childish behavior is unacceptable. Not only was this statement made but Micheal Moore posted a prayer to God that the hurricane come in time to stop the RNC from starting and Moore actually compared himself to a person with a same name as a somewhat Savior of the people of New Orleans. No regard for Human Life or the grief associated with the event.

Liberals prove that they are without remorse and are self serving. Any Republican, or whomever says comments like this is not to be taken seriously.

  4. Is it me or is it SUPER slow getting in here, it takes forever.
People can’t tell a joke anymore, its a product of LIBERAL PUKE and it NEVER ends!
Liberal heads should be SO proud.

  5. I’m curious – is McCain calling Chelsea Clinton ugly and insinuating that either 1) Janet Reno is a man and her father or 2) Janet Reno and Hillary Clinton are lesbians and somehow able reproduce in any way funny?

Or is that just good, healthy, clean and respectable Arizona fun?

(And please – don’t tell me he was suffering from some form of PTSD when he made that comment.)

John McCain, womanizer, about a kid:

“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno.”

  6. Maybe you should remind Fowler that in the Bible, Satan is called the “prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2). So if “god” is on your side, he is no god but the devil, or Satan. Am I surprised that a liberal got a Bible reference wrong? According to Ann Coulter, Liberals are godless. Am I surprised that that the supporters of the obamanation has their “god” on their side. Not at all.

  7. That’s right, Genius Alan, there’s not a single bit of difference between joking about RAIN DISRUPTING YOUR HERO WORSHIP and joking about a NATURAL DISASTER THAT HAS ALREADY KILLED PEOPLE HITTING THE US, INSPIRED BY GOD’S REPUBLICAN HATIN’.

Oh, you are just so enlightened it sends a thrill up my leg.

FYI, jokes are only funny when they make people laugh. Seeing a bunch of Obama worshippers getting soaked as they waited breathlessly for Obama’s Blessing is pretty darned funny. On the flip side, you must have thought the imagery of floating dead bodies in the streets of New Orleans during the RNC was hilarious!

Hence we are witness to the result of Zero Tolerance in the public school system as manifested by Alan’s gray matter. He doesn’t distinguish the difference between one joke and another because he can’t; he’s never been expected to utilize Common Sense so all jokes are the same…well, except that Liberals should get a pass because they’re Liberals.

  9. “He’s insulted every person of faith…”

A great many so-called “people of faith” are an embarrassment to themselves, an insult to the Almighty, and a disgrace to all things American.

  10. I’m pretty sure if Howard Dean sneezed on a Sunday, someone over at hotair.com would find it offensive.

  11. No, Alan – a joke is only funny when it is NOT a joke about innocent lives being lost in a catastrophic hurricane. You are a disgrace.

  12. Hmmm, lessee…

Pray for Rain vs. Cat 5, Killer Hurricane…

I envy your clueless oblivion, Alan. I really do.

Moral equivalence is a science, not an art.

  13. Seriously, “But someone else did it too!” is the best you’ve got on this?

  14. When Ann Coulter said that Timothy McVeigh should have hit the New York Times building and Rev. Jerry Falwell blamed 9/11 on pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays, lesbians, the ACLU and People for the American Way, how many conservatives protested?

  15. “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno.”

That’s funny! No one would laugh at the DNC, though…unless it was twisted to include Cheney’s daughter, who is *gulp* a lesbian.

But, I bet what would KILL are a few jokes about those old people who drowned in their beds when the convalescence home flooded during Katrina! I’m almost positive Fowler could come up with something.

  16. Alan:

You are a classless, partisan hack and hypocrite who needs to get a real job and a clue.

  17. “When Ann Coulter said that Timothy McVeigh should have hit the New York Times building and Rev. Jerry Falwell blamed 9/11 on pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays, lesbians, the ACLU and People for the American Way, how many conservatives protested?”

Answer: approximately the same number of conservatives who don’t think freedom of speech extends to all.

    So sorry if that’s confusing.

  18. The video clip strongly suggests [hiccup] that Fowler may have been inspired by some in-flight spirits, straight up on the rocks. Drunken liberals are a hoot, aren’t they?

Underneath it all, seems Alan is simply trying to prove that he’s not the only one removing content from their site, after the desired controversy increases their traffic. (Traffic, btw, that this site couldn’t handle? LOL please. You’re so transparent.)

Do you actually have any fans, or do you post insanely controversial dribble purely to invoke those that already disliked your rhetoric before finding your blog? Just askin’.

This is my first visit here, and it didn’t take long to notice the patterns…

  22. “Seriously, “But someone else did it too!” is the best you’ve got on this?”

Ever listen to Alan? That’s all he ever has.

  25. Actually, the pattern isn’t quite as described in the above comment.

    1) Dobson makes a video and circulates it, calling on the faithful to prayer for horrible storms to ruin the Democratic convention. But the weather turns out nice. No one worries about the lunatic Dobson and the video gets little press, just a few laughs from those who’ve seen it. Dobson says it was all a little joke anyway, scrubs it from his website and life goes on.

    2) Days later, a Democrat makes an off the cuff remark noting the irony of the failed prayers and successful Democratic convention in light of the approaching raging storms set to cause the rescheduling and near cancelation of Republican convention events. The comments are secretly recorded, circulated and presented by a conservative blog as proof of the inhumanity of Democrats. The Democrat is forced to apologize and the event lives on in conservative circles as proof of the Dems wickedness.

We’ve seen this before. This is the pattern.

  26. I felt that both of the comments were inappropriate, but I’m surprised at this entry.

I watched the Dr. Dobson interview on Hannity & Colmes just last week and Dr. Dobson was not in the Pray for Rain video, nor did he know about the video’s existence. So, why are you writing a blog entry saying that Dobson released the video when he said on your own program that he didn’t even know about it until later?

I am not a Dr. Dobson supporter, but c’mon. He denied this on your own program.

  27. When will Colmes call Klannity out on having anti-semitic Hal Turner sleep at his house?Sen.Obama never had a anti-Semitic, neo-Nazi, racist stay at his house.

  28. Lefties believe that they are operating on better moral plane than everyone else, because they are so much smarter and more enlightened. So, when THEY tell a joke, you have to understand that it doesn’t come from the horrible, evil place that a Right joke would originate. That is why they are better than everyone else – they FEEL so much better than the rest of us.

  29. God is neither for no against either political party. God is for sharing the truth and neither side has. America is fed up with being politically and emotionally manipulated. God has little or nothing to do with “Man-ipulation.” Fowler’s comments are offensive, pretentious, and self-gratifying. God is for the truth. We have been manipulated and the Democrats have not told the truth just like the Republicans. That’s why we are stuck. Neither protected and defended the Constitution. One looks weak and the other side is lying. We are afraid of the impact of treason on our Democracy. We would prefer to look the other way for acts of God to help make the case for victory? Democrats could have won this election if they just choose the hard road and told the truth. Since 9-11, we have been playing war games with our national security. President Bush was reading “My Pet Goat” while we were attacked? That’s inexcusable! Democrats have been right on every issue since for a reason. We know the truth, but won’t share it. We know who “The Bush Fly” is.

  30. Conservative’s joke: People getting all wet during the DNC would be funny.

Fowler’s joke: People losing their homes, livelihoods and lives during the RNC would be funny.

    Yup! Same thing!

    Idiot.

  31. Do Swill OLiely still want to hang Sen.Obama’s wife, but not just yet?Now he wants to do a “series” on Sen.Obama. Will he do one on McPain, hell naw.I wonder how a former anti-Semitic supporter like Gov.Palin, who backed Rat Buchanan, a known bigot and hater of Israel got picked?

  32. Alan,
Actual humor states some truth of life in a humble way.
Material that involves bodily functions or destruction of property tends not be in good taste, and deserves to be ignored.

  33. Here is an example of funny:
    http://www.scrappleface.com/?p=3074

  34. Quick. I think a Democrat just sneezed somewhere in Georgia.

  35. Yes, Fowler should apologize, and so should Michael Moore. Whenever a conservative preacher makes a remark about a natural disaster being a punishment from God, you liberals go nuts. Whenever a liberal says that a natural disaster is a punishment from God (on conservatives), you think it’s funny. I see — you pee on my lawn, it’s not funny. I pee on your lawn, it’s funny. No common sense, no morals, no standards, all hypocrisy — typical liberals! Fowler’s remark stung a lot of people, and, yes, if he were a gentleman with a sliver of decency in his soul or an ounce of liberal sensitivity, he would apologize. If you had any morals and you were a gentleman, Alan, you would chastise him and tell him to apologize instead of defending him. Pardon me if I don’t hold my breath waiting for THAT to happen!

  40. Is this any worse than referring to the hurricane and saying the global warming issue is on their side?

  41. I like Colmes. He reminds me of the kid I knew growing up that spent most of his time crying, running, or being laughed at as smaller, tougher kids would “pants” him in front of them at recess and lunch periods. Even the teachers thought that the kid was a waste of space.

  42. What ASSHOLES these libs be. King if the asshols is alan

  43. Right, Alan. And only Republicans should be splashed all over YouTube when they say something stupid. You can’t have it only one way, little brother. Time to grow up and quit your whining. Democrats love YouTube until it bites them on the butt.

  44. Alan — are you so dense that you don’t see a difference between “Pray for a rain-out” and “Ain’t it great New Orleans is getting a devastating hurricane!”

One is an inconvenience — the other is a tragedy.

And after three years of complaining about Katrina, I would have thought you folks on the Left had a little more decency and compassion.

Oh, that’s right — your Daily Kos talking-point inspired Sarah Palin posts over the last couple of days have proven you have no decency.

  45. Alan,

Boy I hope you, the Dems, and lefties keep it up.
The more you spill your bile, the easier it is for the
sane, rational thinkers out there to see what twisted, hateful little minds you and your fellow travelers have.

My only fear is that we no longer have a majority of rational thinkers in the USA now after decades of leftest indoctrination.

  46. I’ve heard you on Sirius from time to time. Man, what a self-serving pathetic little sack of hate you are.

  47. I don’t know much about Don Fowler, but I’ve seen him on many shows. He usually doesn’t make a lot of sense. Kind of like you, Alan.

  48. So Alan,

As long as a joke is told in private, regardless of content, it is appropriate?

I can just imagine what kind of appropriate jokes KKK member Democratic U.S. Senator Robert Byrd makes in “private”.

Puh-lease, Alan. Grow some stones to at least call out the guys on your side of the aisle once an a while.

Gallows humor is usually reserved for the people who actually experience somthing traumatic and is a defense mechanism to help them cope. Semper Fi

  50. I believe that both of the comments were inappropriate, but I’m surprised at your comment.

I watched the Dr. Dobson interview on H & C last week and Dr. Dobson was not in the “Pray for Rain” video, nor did he know about the video’s existence. So, why are you writing a comment now saying that Dobson released the video when he said on your own program last week that he didn’t even know about it until later?

I am not a Dr. Dobson supporter, but really try being truthful. He denied this on your own program.

    Also:

“Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right” Lincoln

  51. Fox News should show you the door immediately. I’m sure that you could get a job over at Daily Koz. They would be a great fit for you.

  52. That’s not an apology, that’s a political cop out. Fowler says he was poking fun at Jerry Falwell’s comments following 9/11. Is Falwell’s name mentioned in the video? No.

Ironic Micheal Moore made the same tasteless remark, isn’t it? No.

The fringe maniacal idiots are sinking to new lows and dragging the party down with them. Will it fly in flyover country? No.

  53. Alan you’re the king. You are the poster boy for the left. I love how you provide fodder for the cannon. You are a perfect example of liberalism in the USA and I commend you for it. I just wish you were seen and heard by more Americans, so that they could actually see and hear how the left really thinks. Maybe Oboma can put you on some campaign posters/ads to show middle America how he really thinks. He has been handled perfectly by his campaign staff. A perfect puppet with a teleprompter for strings. If he is such a great candidate, why don’t you invite him on your show? Keep up the fight.

  54. Well Alan, you continue on with the liberal stupidity. If someone else did it at sometime during the history of the earth, then it’s ok for me to do it. Two wrongs don’t make a right Alan. At your age you should have known that already.

  55. How can anyone raise questions about prenatal care in the case of a Down Syndrome baby? Disgusting. I guess it was only a joke.

  56. Transparent, that’s what Alan does. Whenever a liberal says or does something improper, he justifies it by citing a conservative who did something similar.

So I guess that means it’s OK for me to kill someone because another person once did it before me.

Alan, I know it’s difficult having an extra chromosome, but please try harder.

  57. Freedom of speech is a choice. You either exercise it or not.

But if you CHOOSE to speak as an elected leader who represents a group of *people*, in which you are SWORN to protect and defend, then you have a moral responsibility to use free speech responsibly.

Coulter, Dobsen, Falwell, Michael Moore etc… are not public officials. They have no such obligation. If they choose to stick their foot in their mouth they only tarnish their own personal reputation.

    Big, big, difference.

With that said *anyone* who speaks or jokes where there is a possibility of human suffering, destruction or death is morally reprehensible.

This is a common sense issue not a partisan one. Alan you should know this.

  58. It’s not the same thing. Praying for rain to make people uncomfortable and wet is not the same thing as laughing about a life- and property-destroying hurricane.

Fowler doesn’t help himself by offering the standard Democratic apology, which I wish we would stop forever, because it is condescending and alienating.

“I’m sorry if anyone was offended by my comments” (paraphrase)

Let me tell you what that means.

    1) He distances himself from wrongdoing. It’s the COMMENTS that offended, not Fowloer. Bad, Bad Comments!

    2) “IF anyone was offended”. i.e. “If anyone was stupid enough to be offended by the comments”.

    So the translation is:

“I am really sorry if anyone was so uneducated as to be offended by comments that were unfairly recorded by a nutcase”.

There is a whole psychology behind this. When a murderer is interviewed in prison, if he acknowledges the crime at all, it is always “when the murder took place” or “when the victim died” rather than “when I killed him”. The shift to a generic passive form is telling.

Fowler, this is a close enough election already. Don’t screw it up by being an ingracious d**ck, old man.

  59. Oh my god, you people are pathetic. Talk about over-reacting! But unfortunately, not all that surprising coming from people who blame EVERYTHING on Bill Clinton’s blowjob – you have to grasp at straws every chance you get.

  60. Uhh Kid Funkadelic? Are you really comparing Hannity’s associates wtih Obamas? You must be new here.

Apparently you aren’t familiar with the fact that Obama launched his political career in the house of a 60’s radical terrorist bomber, William Ayers.

  61. Alan,
You are so childish. The argument, “the other side does it so it is OK” is weak. And the “other side” was talking about a little rain, Fowler was LAUGHING with glee about a killer hurricane hitting New Orleans and jeopardizing lives and property. I don’t expect you to see the difference because you are just a political hack trying to score a cheap point. GROW UP.

  62. Ex Dem chair laughs about hurricane and RNC convention: “So you see, it’s funny. That New Orleans will get a hurricane. That’s funny because it is due to hit when President Bush is scheduled to speak. Isn’t that cool?”

Michael Moore laughing about hurricane for RNC convention: “proof there is a god in heaven, hahahhahaha”.

Possible deaths, likely injuries, some people will lose their homes and almost everthing they own, and property damage will be in the millions of dollars. Now THAT is funny as hell if it hurts the Republican convention. Yes indeed, I am chuckling right along – not.

  63. “…that he later removed from his website.”

    Alan, you’ve never done this???

  64. The Dobson prayer was for torrential, all consuming floods of epic proportions to flood out the DNC event.

It’s interesting, that the conservative commenters here have altered the lunatic Dobson call into a polite request to the Almighty for light showers or a scattering of raindrops on the DNC fiesta.

Really, you’re all f’ing insane. You’re nuts and a waste of Colmes’ bandwidth. You can’t present an argument of any substance to defend your behavior so you’re doing your best to bury Colmes under bullshit.

Getting “Libs” to move in the same direction is like trying to herd cats. Calling conservatives in on a target is as simple as bringing the cows in at milking time. A simple whistle and the conservative cows all head for the barn in one large mass. It’s in your DNA.

  66. Alan, the fact you cannot see the difference between someone who prays for rain disrupting the DNC convention and someone who says a natural disaster that has/will kill many is proof that God exists (because God hates Republicans?) is laughable. You need to rethink your position on that one.

  67. the fact that this is how things turned out is quite funny. and i admire fowler for observing and relating this fact in a personal conversation. it is the same observation i made a few days ago when i first heard that the repuke’s convention could be post poned or changed. isn’t it ironic that they call for a national prayer to disrupt our canidate, and everything works out in exactly the opposite of what they had hoped. now it is their party getting rained on and we are not even allowed to joke about it publicly? screw that!

neither fowler nor colmes nor myself have the slightest wish for any of the tragedies that occured during hurricane katrina to happen again. no one wants to see people sitting on their roof begging for help. the fact that so many of you conservative sheeple bring such things into the conversation disturbing. but the fact that it gets brought up works to help us remember where the republicans were during hurricane katrina. most of all john mccain

let me clarify once again, the humor is in the observation that conservative leaders ask their followers to pray to God to disrupt our convention only to have Him disrupt their own convention. there is no humor in making the suggestion that drowning a city would be good. only repukes have that sense of humor. you know the kind that sees the fact that iran is smoking more american cigarettes is a good way to kill iranians. or that a woman might enjoy being raped by a gorilla.

let’s also be clear that he made this statement in a private conversation. i would have a problem if he said this in a public forum of any kind. but he said it while being unknowingly recorded. huge difference.
