Contrary To Her Speech, Palin Previously Praised Obama’s Energy Plan

September 4th, 2008, 2:23 PM EDT

On August 4, Palin put out a press release praising Obama’s call to complete the Alaska’s natural gas pipeline.  The governor’ office headlined the release “Palin Pleased With Obama’s Energy Plan”.

“I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska’s natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs,” Governor Palin said. “The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs.”

In a speech given in Lansing, Michigan, Senator Obama called for the completion of the Alaska natural gas pipeline, stating, “Over the next five years, we should also lease more of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska for oil and gas production. And we should also tap more of our substantial natural gas reserves and work with the Canadian government to finally build the Alaska natural gas pipeline, delivering clean natural gas and creating good jobs in the process.”

Governor Palin also acknowledged the Senator’s proposal to offer $1,000 rebates to those struggling with the high cost of energy.

But in her GOP red meat performance in St. Paul, Palin said,

“America needs more energy; our opponent is against producing it.”

So, which is it?

Responses to this post...

  1. You are right and wrong at the same time in your statement. Either Obama has left this out or just does not get it. While he does call for natural gas he is against drilling for Oil as is the Left. Pelosi will not even bring it to vote. My point is that you HAVE TO drill for oil in order to get to the Natural Gas in which they are then separated.

  2. I thought Obama’s energy plan was to “hope” that a miracle would occur to immediately “change” the oil/gas infrastructure in America to accomodate a revolutionary new energy source (which has yet to be discovered), without any additional cost to the hard-working middle class American families. In the meantime, we can remain dependent upon foreign oil, unless you want to pump up the air in your tires and get a tune up.

If Obama is for drilling in Alaska, I’m for Obama’s energy plan to. This highlights another great aspect of Palin, she’s not afraid to admit the other side might have a good point!

  3. The left isn’t against drilling..let them drill on the land they have.

Do you think if they DO get to drill in the Anwar they will sell it here?

And the Republicans NEVER let a bill that Democrats wanted come to a vote when THEY were in the majority either.

  4. Alan,

You are consumed with Sarah Palin.

Me thinks you are very scared your ungodly liberal ways are not going to win come November 4th and you like a cornered snake are reaching for every straw you possibly can.

What is the purpose of this blog of yours? I see no purpose for it but to propagate a life style that is against God’s desires.

Democrats – Killing of the innocent, stealing from those who have and trap those who do not into a life that is almost impossible to get out of. Removing God from the public square. False cries of hardship (Alan we American’s are blessed beyond measure even the poorest among us!) David Letterman recently nailed you down Alan and that big time.

  5. Oh the left isn’t? Or shall I put it in Pelosi’s words “We should just drill your heads”. Have a vote then. If there was oil on the land leased don’t you think they would drill there? And yes there may be some (meaning an insignificant amount) which costs more to drill for it than it is worth. They may not sell it here but I am pretty sure the cost per barrel would significantly drop and isn’t that what we really want? Lower enery prices!

  6. The liberals are very happy with the cost of energy these days. Fits perfectly in with the false teaching of their hero Al Gore. They have Americans right where they want them – forcing us to cut back on energy – to save the earth! (The earth is doing just fine. It will be here till God’s plan for the ages is completed.)

    This is so transparent.

Get tougher with Sean Hannity-this guy is so pathetic, a hypocrit-complains about the media-he spends all day and all night attacking others-yet, one word against a republican and he acts like he is not aware of attack by himself and the right-he calls wolf way too much-can you imagine being trapped in an elevator with Hannity and Limbaugh-Sean must have one great wife-or does he have her black mailed-and which of the four wives of Limbaugh is great-and how many kids has limbaugh fathered-is that why he needs to abuse viagra and narcotics-to help get it up and his courage up.

  14. Yeah.. Carla.. you’ve been so victimized the past 10 years… poor thing.

  15. “To Vince P.

Just like the Far Right Republican Leadership has already crushed this country for the past 8 years.
    Carla”

Yeah Carla… Conservatives want to crush you with low taxes and small government. Too bad it was the Moderate Compassionate Republicans who were controlling the agenda in the 2000s..

And if it was the Democrats.. as it is now.. the govt would have spent even more.

  16. Drilling When oil and gas prices go up, the pockets of Big companies are filled up.We should send the revenue back directly to the American people. We should break that monopoly.Guess who said that? Review Palin’s speech.

  17. Vince,

I know you are concerned about national debt – I would say we are being crushed by debt, and cutting taxes are not the answer to dealing with that debt. How we can fight such an expensive war, in two countries, and still cut taxes is beyond me.

I understand the theory that by cutting taxes, you increase productivity, which then increases revenue. However, there is a point where you just can’t keep spending and keep cutting without going into debt. Crushing debt.

  18. Carla, congress spends the bucks NOT the president. The do nothing democrats have the ball now. It is up to them. Your anger is misguided.

  19. UC: Income tax payments to the Fed. Govt increased over 25% since the tax cuts.. because tax cuts increase economic activity. The problem is increased spending. If the damn Congress can do its job right, there would be no problem. The Republicans failed to live up to their supposed ideas. That’s why the conservatives became disgruntled in 06 and have been until just recently.

Do you remember the much vilified Democrat Primary Debate when ABC had the nerve to ask O and H tough questions?

One of the questions to O was “You want to raise Capital Gains Tax. When the tax is raised , revenues go down. Why will you raised the tax if you know it will cause the govt to get less money”

    Obama answered ‘because it’s fair’

That level of stupidity is frightening in a President candidate.

Our debt is crushing.. and the answer is to return to our true Constitutionally restrained conception of what the Fed Govt can and cannot do.

And I would start with repealing the 17th Amend.

  20. I’m really, really bored with all this Sarah Palin stuff.
If we had a chat stream I would write this there, since I know it’s off topic to the thread.
Isn’t there anyone stuck to their toilet seat this week or something?

  21. Vince,

“because it’s fair” is an asinine response, I agree (I did not see any of the primary debates, unfortunately)

I do think there needs to be a combination of cuts and tax increases, I am very concerned about the amount of debt we have with China. As our debt has increased, and China’s funding of that debt has increased, I have certainly noticed decreased criticism of Chinese human rights violations – I don’t think the two are unrelated.

  22. SKY: Alan isn’t done destroying her yet.

  23. Now we are getting some where. We are deeply in debt to China and countries are buying up our highways, track, building and land. We need to curb spending most definitely to bring down debt. But again increased taxes do not help US the people. You can not tax business – 70% of all americans work for small business. Increased taxes on business is passed on to the consumer – jobs and benefits cut. We can not increase capial gains just b/c it is fair it does not economically work. Beside that is just taxing 100 million Americans that invest. You can not tax the American dream of people that what to start their own business or what to work hard to become weathly. Cut taxes, cut spending, invest in our own resources and increase small business to strengthen the dollar. We are the only country in the world that does not take advantage of our own resources and we are the best at conservation of the land! Brazil is building a neuclear sub to protect the offshore oil and natural gas.

  24. >> SKY: Alan isn’t done destroying her yet.

Correction: Alan is not done destroying HIMSELF yet. He is looking worse each day as he refuses to apologize for his personal judgment attack on the “broken water and airplane trip idiotic remarks.”

It is just not in him to admit he was over the top. He is so blind in his fear.

  25. The National debt is staggering and, in my opinion, is the biggest problem that this country faces. The question facing us all this November is who is most likely to address and resolve this problem. We will not solve this problem by implementing more government-run social programs. I agree we need to get out of the war, its time to cut those costs (both candidates seem to support this, in one form or another). We also have to make hard decisions about what other programs we can cut to reduce Gov’t expeditures. While the answer is pretty apparent to me, everyone ought to try to take off their political party affiliated blinders and review the facts and draw their own conclusions. I’m willing to pay more taxes to reduce the debt, but am adamantly opposed to paying more taxes to fund additional social programs (parents can teach their own kids about sex and buy them condoms).

But, it all starts with Congress, and they have done an extremely poor job – including the Republican led congress – over the last decade or so. Let’s make the tough choices and get our country back on track.

  26. Frank: _whatever_
you probably never liked him anyway.

  28. Small government? When do we get that …….

Education and government unions are a good place to start cutting.

  29. Frank,

Education is a good place to start cutting? Why not the military? We spend as much on the military as the next 30 countries combined (I stated in a previous post 40 countries combined, but that would overstate my case by 4%)

We don’t spend a whole lot on education, so I don’t think we would save much there.

  30. Hope for Change: You’re confusing Republicans and conservatives

  31. UC: The Federal Govt’s involvement in education is Unconstitional.

The State’s job is to handle schools. I really doubt there’s anything substantial being gained by having a Fed Dept of Edu

  32. Vince,

When did the supreme court rule that the federal government’s involvement in education is unconstitutional?

And more to the point, we clearly need to look elsewhere than the department of education to save significant amounts of money.

  33. Cara,

$12,000 or so per student per year in New York State is not too much? Hmmm… I beg to differ. I home school my eight kids for less that $300 per year per student. My third oldest daughter is about to enter college this coming January. I will put her up against the best the public school has – academic & work ethic wise. She took & passed (95% plus) five different Math classes and took four years of science as all my kids did and will in the four high school years.

As for why a strong military – that is a no brainer: “When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:”

WE SPEND WAY TOO MUCH ON EDUCATION… We need to rid the school of the dinosaur type teachers and wasteful administrators. Vouchers anyone?

  34. UC: Congress doesn’t have the right. If it does, you’ll need to show me how.

  35. “WE SPEND WAY TOO MUCH ON EDUCATION… We need to rid the school of the dinosaur type teachers and wasteful administrators. Vouchers anyone?”

And people are dumber and more irrational than before.

I would argue that I have to prove Federal involvement in Education is Unconstitutional as evidence.

  36. I thought we were talking about federal dollars and the federal deficit. I’ll save the debate on state funded education for another day.

And I didn’t say we shouldn’t have a strong military, How about we only spend as much as Russia, China, and the UK combined? That would save us 350 billion. Probably a bit more than we would save by messing around with education.

  37. If it’s unconstitutional presumably someone has challenged it and the supreme court has ruled on it.

  38. Vince,

    re:
‘And people are dumber and more irrational than before.

I would argue that I have to prove Federal involvement in Education is Unconstitutional as evidence.’

I’m sorry you have such a negative view of your fellow countrymen. I think, on the whole we aren’t too bad off, though I would definitely like to see more investment in science education – the US is falling behind there.

As far as your opinion that re: the constitutionality of Fed. involvement in education, the way our three branches of govt works the Supreme Court decides whether legislation passed by congress is constitutional or not, not blog posters ; )

  39. Sound Constitutional authority was destroyed in the 1930s.

Based on the text of the Const. the Federal Govt has no authority to dictate to the States anything regarding Education.

The fact that everyone violates it is another matter.

  40. Hey Frank, Have you not heard of separation of church and state? You know, the constitution….Religion in the public square is exactly what the founding fathers didn’t want. It makes me laugh that the right wing only supports the second amendment and doesn’t realize there are other parts of the constitution. It’s people like you that have divided America in half. I can’t wait for people like you to get to the pearly gates only to get turned away by a god whose name you have used to destroy everything he would support. Enjoy 70 years in delusion followed by an eternity in the deepest pits of hell…..

  42. Well, I have no response to that, other than I obviously disagree and am quite proud of the system of government that we have and think it works pretty well.

But back to my main point, I assume you agree that a 350 billion dollar cut to the military would be a good idea? I know you share my concern re: federal debt., that would be a pretty good first step, right? (yea, yea, that is tongue in cheek, just lightening things up a bit, I’m pretty sure you don’t agree with my idea)

  43. Finally Frank,
If you actually paid attention to politics you’d know that Congress has tried to do a lot, but everytime they do Bush vetoes it. May I remind you that the GOP was in control of both the White House and Congress from 2000-2006 and accomplished absolutely nothing (except for turning our attention from Bin Laden). You can’t blame a Democratic congress for being unable to get legislation past the king of the veto, GWB…..

I know nothing I say will change your mind, and that’s fine. But it’s people like you that think that this country is here to serve you and your personal beliefs. Even John McCain would argue that you are there to serve the country, and that there are people who take the opposite positions as you and are still patriotic Americans.

  44. Keith,

You must have a direct line to God if you know who will and who won’t make it past those gates. Must be very comforting. What is the word on me? Am I going to make it, or am I going to fry?

  45. “Religion in the public square is exactly what the founding fathers didn’t want.”

Keith is wrong. What the founders wanted were two things.

No Federal Estabishment of a National Church.

And no Federal interference in the internal affairs of a States.

School vouchers are entirely appropiate if your basis is what the framers wanted.

  46. But back to my main point, I assume you agree that a 350 billion dollar cut to the military would be a good idea? i understand… and yah of course i disagree.

  47. Mr. Colmes, please think for a second. A pipe line doesn’t produce any energy, it merely transports it. So Palin’s appreciation for Obama’s desire to complete her pipeline is not inconsistent with her statement tha Obama is against producing more energy supply.

  48. Holding Palin accountable for her statements? Why that’s sexist, my man! If a woman can’t change her mind about anything at any time, who can?

  49. To John: Please read for a second. Obama wants to expand leasing from the Petroleum Reserve over 5 years. That’s added production, not transport capacity. Why is it so important to drill ONLY in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge and NOWHERE ELSE??? WHY take that risk if you can get energy from many other sources? And WHY not first explore in the lands the oil companies have ALREADY leased?? Ignorance like yours often leads to certainty. But THINK!

  50. She also was mistaken about the claim she opposes earmarks. She was the first mayor of Wasilla to hire a Washington Lobbyist to get earmarks. It worked. The Lobbyist and she pulled in $26.9 million for her little town while she was mayor. Then she became governor, and made several trips to D.C. to seek earmarks. She managed to pull in over half a billion dollars in earmarks for Alaska in the short time she has been governor. It woulb be more appropriate to call her the Earmark Queen!

  51. The government should not hav to force us legislatively to do the right and moral thing. I do not agree with abortion but we all know that people are going to do what they want to do regardless of laws. We need education and family, moral teaching to curb this problem, it can’t be solved by Washington. Get off these soap boxes of hypocrisy as we have seen in so many of these right wing conservatves. How am I going to pay my bills, afford health care, and make a better life for my children is what we need to hear and focus on.

  52. Alan,

Hillary Clinton also said John McCain would bring a lifetime of experience to the White House, and Obama will bring a speech he gave in 2002.

During the convention, her tune suddenly changed.

    Which is it?

  53. Alan,

Joe Biden said Barack Obama was not experienced to be in the White House.

After he was tapped for VP, his tune changed.

    Which is it?

  54. You will have to ask Obama which it is.
He seems to feel all we have to do it inflate our tires properly………….he appears to be the one who has changed!

  55. Karenabcde,

Really? He said all we have to do is inflate our tires properly? When exactly did he say this?

  56. July 29th 2008 Obama Said:

“There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy,” Obama said. “Making sure your tires are properly inflated – simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling – if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You’d actually save just as much!”

    Tune-ups???????

In the past, regular tune-ups were needed because cars used mechanical ignition systems that relied on points, rotors and distributor caps that wore and needed frequent adjustment. Today’s cars have electronic ignition systems that seldom need attention. Older cars mainly used carburetors to mix fuel, and they also tended to get out of adjustment and require frequent tweaking. Today’s cars mainly rely on fuel injection. Modern autos also come with platinum-tipped spark plugs that can last 100,000 miles, and air filters that typically don’t need replacement for 30,000 miles. So the old-fashioned tune-up is pretty much a thing of the past.

  57. Alan,

Where does it say she supports Obama’s energy Plan? All she says is that she agrees with him that we move forward to exploit Alaska’s natural resources.

  58. Public transportation, high-mpg cars, severe taxes on gas guzzlers (like the kind of tax I pay on my cigarettes), and wind, solar, and water power.

And nuclear energy, only if we can bury the waste in Republican nuke-proponents’ back yards.

  59. Why we Canadians love Sarah…

    From her speech wed night..

“Starting in January, in a McCain-Palin administration, we’re going to lay more pipelines and build more nuclear plants and create jobs with clean coal and move forward on solar, wind, geothermal and other alternative sources. (Cheers, applause.)”

I guess she forgot to mention that the jobs she’s creating are Canadian jobs.. You’re being had folks.

“TransCanada Gets Alaska Governor Palin’s Approval for Pipeline

    By Eduard Gismatullin

Aug. 29 (Bloomberg) — TransCanada Corp., the nation’s largest pipeline company, won approval from Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to build a $27 billion pipeline to carry natural gas from the Arctic to U.S. markets.

Palin on Aug. 27 signed a bill authorizing the state to award Calgary-based TransCanada a license to build the 1,715- mile (2,744-kilometer) link from Prudhoe Bay to the Alberta Hub in Canada, according to a statement. The license will be granted in 90 days.”

  60. OBAMA’S ECONOMICS ARE DANGEROUS !!!
Unemployment at 6.1% simply reinforces McCain’s argument that if you raise taxes on businesses, they will have to cut back their work force in order to keep their doors open. In the short run, Obama’s desire to raise taxes on businesses, and give the money to struggling Americans sounds good … but, it panders to people’s desire for hand outs and immediate gratification … for, in the long run, this kind of bad judgement is like eating the goose that lays the golden eggs … or, like eating your seed crop, instead of using the seeds to grow more crops. Raising the taxes on businesses is the best way to dramatically increase unemployment in America.
