On Thursday’s Radio Show…
LIVE coverage of the Republican National Convention, including Sen. John McCain’s speech accepting the GOP’s presidential nomination.
Alan’s guests in St. Paul include:
• Actress Patricia Heaton of Everybody Loves Raymond
• Obama Campaign Press Secretary Bill Burton
• Actor Ben Stein, author of the new book How to Ruin the United States of America

When minorities realize that when Sarah Palin (and Rudy) openly mocked and demeaned Barack Obama’s “community organizing” in Chicago (this theme got BIG LAUGHS from the Republican base last night) as “nothing”, they were calling the life’s work of Dr. King and scores of other [---wait for it---] Christian Americans “nothing”.
The insensitive glee with which the Right is throwing self-righteous mud disgusts me. I heard a caller to Allen Handleman’s show today make that point; explaining that “minorities usually work their way up into government this way” because they cannot buy or good-ol’-boy their way in.
As with many prima donnas, Palin probably didn’t pay much attention in History class, more intent upon the “hot” snow machine racer in the second row.
She does, however, get some hippy-cred for naming one daughter after a Pink Floyd record.

Palin refered to the US armed forces as “Gods army”. I find this so offensive and so should every American!
It reminds me of when the NFL player Pat Tillman was killed, and how the administration used his death as propaganda. Pat tillman is a hero, he gave up a lucrative career in the NFL to serve this country we did not need these draft dodgers to tell us that. The disgrace is how his mother was treated when she had the nerve to ask questions about her sons death. It seems Pat Tillman was not religious enough for todays millitary, and his mother was pretty much told, why should she ask questions, her son was not going to a higher place anyway. They did not phrase it as nice. For this woman to call our army “Gods army” puts us on the same level as the taliban. Go back to Alaska and take care of your dysfunctional family.
September 4th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Wall Street tanked today.
A 350 point drop in the DOW on Palin’s remarks. Let’s see how the market reacts tomorrow to McBush’s speech tonight.
Down 500? Down 1000? The DJI bottom is supposed to be 10000. The Reeps have already brought us two hurricanes for their convention, why not finish us off with a market crash?
That’s okay, I never intended to retire anyway.
September 4th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
I caught Patricia Heaton on some TV thing a while back complaining how she (as a conservative in Hollywood) has been forced to the back of the bus there … so to speak.
I wonder if she took a seat next to Jon Voight and Pat Sajak.
I’m guessing Heaton is going to be a huge fan of Palin.
September 4th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
I feel like throwing up when listening to this BS. Hearing Republicans talk about fixing things that their party has gotten America into. Talking about change by using the same ole Republican policies. Hearing Palin get up there last night and lying her ass off. We don’t hear republicans saying anything about how they are going to change America. John McCain is another president who is all about war. Hell if it was up to him and President Bush we would be at war with the whole world.
September 4th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
she has hippy cred? You’ve GOT to be kidding me. Maybe the name was a co-incidence.
September 4th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Bret, Jeff, Anonymouse & Kory, yep the Pubes are up to no good…once again. This convention is an embarrassment of the US to the rest of the world! (I hope the world turns the channel off).
…& while its going on Dick slips overt to Georgia with another billion dollars…
(political prostitution keeps marching on).
September 4th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
She admits to having smoked dope, maybe it was to a Pink Floyd album.
She claims to have not enjoyed it – but at least that’s better fib than ‘I did not inhale’.
I like Alan’s line that he ‘did not exhale’
And I guess you are talking about Piper, from ‘Piper at the gates of dawn’ the *most* psychedelic album they made!
September 4th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Video tribute to Cindy (the other woman) McCain.
How come it left out the part about “she was mistress to another woman’s husband?”
September 4th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
I’m glad these conventions are almost over. I’m ready for the debates. This pre-scripted stuff is boring, and a bit dorky (both sides).
Plus I think the interaction with Alan and the callers is much more interesting than these interviews with actors.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
“… Dick slips over to Georgia with another billion …”
They have an oil pipeline in Georgia, in case you hadn’t heard.
I swear, nothing I’ve heard from the Reeps for two days now is a surprise but it still makes my blood boil. Nothing is more infuriating than listening to the same crew that made the current mess ask for a chance to clean it up, pretending they didn’t make the mess in the first place.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
McBush is punching all the rightwing buttons tonight. Too bad, it’s all BS.
He’s not exactly a very dynamic speaker, is he. The crowd has a louder voice than he does.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Yep, I’m writ’n tonight and missing McCain. Last night was finally too much. Hats off to Alan; he’s a real soldier.
Since yall mentioned Palin, I’ll chime in with my next day’s reflections. IMO too it’s pure “anti-democratic ideology” just as George Lakoff notes.
http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/09/02#comment-1022728
But truly, I don’t think she knows it.
She doesn’t care about the DC pundits, but the majority of pundits laud her like a queen already. I wonder how that happened. Guess it was unintended.
Indeed, all things democratic are at stake like Lakoff sez. There must be an imperative to explain issues. What’s been at least part of the compost heap for all these woes? Blowback and shock doctrine and economic hitmen for way too long. The legacy of the Pubs and Clinton too. Let’s come to grips with reality. I want every “elitist” vibe outta me–there’s no room for’em anyway & maybe then someone’ll actually hear me out re single payer.
Let’s try to help more of our elders who survive the dust bowl this time not default to angry and confused blue collar Republicanism.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Over the next few weeks all these republican speakers at the convention is going to hurt the Republican party. Sarah Palin’s speach, Mike Huckabee, and especially that moron Gulliani. Can you believe that Gulliani accused the Muslim relion of being the terrorist of our country and I didn’t see that in the headlines. This convention was disturbing and irritating. Oh and I can’t wait for the debates. Palin vs Biden and Obama vs McCain these are hardly fair.
September 4th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Why is Palin getting a free pass on HER pastor – he says Jews are getting killed in Israel because they won;t convert to Christianity. Are we letting her off easy on this because she’s a little helpless girl??
September 4th, 2008 at 11:38 pm
GOD-zilla of Wasilla, the moose huntin’, pistol-packin’ hockey mama … “Watchout Washington” … eeeyuck!
September 4th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
Jake there is alot about Sarah Palin I am hoping the Democrats expose. The Democrats try to play nice every election but this election is so vital I hope they bury McCain and Palin so deep that they will never be able to dig themselves out. It makes me so nervous to see another 4 years of Bush
September 4th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Love your show Alan. This week has been a real circus coming from St. Paul, Minnesota. All the clowns, elephants, monkeys, and carnivores were out in full effect. It was very offensive to me the assertion that if you didn’t believe the way they did that you didn’t put your country first or love your country. I am a proud Democrat and a proud American. If all you can do is belittle your opponent rather than talk about real solutions and a real vision for this nation, then you will never get my vote. Joe Lieberman has now been put on my list along with Sean Hannity as people that have lost my respect. Wake up America, stand up America, we can see through this ploy of the Republican party and John McCain. Sarah Palin was a lack of judgement on his part, he was not putting America first with this pick.
September 4th, 2008 at 11:58 pm
I’ve been listening to most of this on XM but I caught some clips on cable TV this morning.
MSNBC showed Palin giving McCain a hug and it was obvious she wasn’t really enjoying it. The expression on Palin’s face was … like the expression a young lady might display when told to hug an old friend of her parents but someone she didn’t know or like.
September 5th, 2008 at 12:12 am
I don’t believe that McCain picked her. Rove did.
September 5th, 2008 at 12:18 am
Never Underestimate the Power of the “Stupid Vote”. Remember, Bush Jr, was elected for a 2nd term. Jesus was NOT a white republican. He never said, If your enemy smites you, start a war with a non-responsible country that may benefit you economically and kill thousands of citizens and defenders of that country and say “It is God’s Plan”. I have heard stupid voters say, Palin may have read a speech by Bush’s speech writer, but She meant it. About all the lies, “They all do!” and, I’ve heard evangelical Christians say, “He’s the Anti-Christ.” He’s NOT a Christian, he’s a Muslim, All his money is from terrorist groups…I’m pretty sure my bible says, “Thou shall not lie.” Thou shall not bear false witness against they neighbors. I am talking to deaf ears. Hate, provoking fear, Lies, slander, and killing are NOT the lessons taught by Jesus Christ. How could people parading as “Righteous” spew these under the Christian Flag. May God give Barrack Obama strength and courage, and protect him from the venom of Christians.
September 5th, 2008 at 12:22 am
An e-mail to Cafferty File today was hilarious,
“Sarah Palin is Dick Cheney with lipstick.”
September 5th, 2008 at 12:22 am
Sarah will cram for her job as veep like some of us studied for finals in college after drinking the semester away.
Cliffs Notes!!
September 5th, 2008 at 12:26 am
I watched the RNC on C-Span & they put the camera on a man in the highest balcony with a sign that read “McCain Votes Against Vets.”
Soon after a woman was forcibly removed from the floor in front of McCain.
Was this shown on other channels?
September 5th, 2008 at 12:32 am
Alan, Ben Stein says abortion is the most important issue, yet he says Rudy gave a great speech…Rudy is pro-choice…???
September 5th, 2008 at 12:46 am
So HOPING the invasion and occupation is a task from God is better than stating that is actually IS a task from God?
SHEESH!
September 5th, 2008 at 12:51 am
For Americans looking for a change in this country after the last 8 years of pure hell ~ Palin has about as much appeal as a turd in a punch bowl does!
They can write all the speeches they want for her, grill her on key topics ~ because she certainly doesn’t know that info herself, use the sexism card (although Hillary wasn’t allowed to) all they want. In the end, she’s just some white trailer park trash girl all dressed up.
September 5th, 2008 at 12:59 am
So glad the “MOM, Flag & Apple Pie Convention is over!
September 5th, 2008 at 1:00 am
Mary –
I’m with you, not only do I not think McCain picked her, I don’t think he even likes her. Word has it he really wanted either Lieberman or Ridge (they said hell no), they wanted Romney (McCain said hell no) – so once Hillary was not on the ticket – this is what he is stuck with.
I just have a feeling that everytime she speaks, he might be smiling, but I am sure he is thinking “you dumb b****”.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:06 am
Perhaps your “real version,” Vince, assumes there are pontential wars all over the place that would carry out God’s will or plan, and that it would be a waste to wage a war that doesn’t do this.
Or, are we asking God to make a questionable war good?
At any rate, can you cite a source?
September 5th, 2008 at 1:16 am
Danielle, I look for Sarah to get kicked off the ticket.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:18 am
Schunacherite, Waste of time to reason with Vince…he just comes by to harass. Ignoing his posts is all we can do.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:22 am

That’s a typical prayer.. there’s nothing mysterious about it.
Most Christians make these sorts of prayers all the time.
The link to the full text is linked on my name.. the spam filter ate the post if i put it here. Click on my name to go there.. or go back to the Task from God post he made and find the link to HufPo he put in other quote.
Note that the same picture Alan used is there
He deliberately altered the text to misrepresent what she said.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:26 am
Mary: I may be argumentive, but I have never lied about anything. Unlike Alan who abuses his position and the trust people put in him.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Interesting Amy Goodman interview with Shannyn Moore at democracynow dot org.
I’m out of it. There’s been a discussion between Goodman, Greenspan, and Naomi Klein posted at the above site for a year. Hey, there’s an answer to all that balony from Romney! If you keep clicking on the link for the transcript it’ll finally come. I’d love to watch the stream (can’t due to dial-up), but reading it enabled me to jump to the questions which were of most interest…best for the time I had available tonight anyway. Man, can AG weasel!
September 5th, 2008 at 1:28 am
Vince, he misquoted something from Huffington site, but put in url that leads to the original? The alledged misquote you attribute to Alan is too radically different. I am thinking both statements could be Palin quotes. Trying to make a questionable war noble from the pulpit/lectern/mike is getting dangerously close to Mark Twain’s “The War Prayer.” Look it up.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:46 am
You liberals are so phoney and so far out of touch with reality. You idiots live in fairyland. Get your heads out of your asses. We finally have someone that wants to clean up the scum in both parties, especially your elitist tax and wasteful spend party.Sarah Palin and john McCain are going to win and soon, you liberals will be gone. You guys are shaking in your Birkinstock sandals right now and I Love it. weirdos..And by the way, You guys should love Geroge Bush! He is a liberal!!! Obama is a dirtball and i can proove it. Go to Idiots4Obama dot com and find out.Losers..

I OWNED ALAN COLMES ON HIS RADIO SHOW LAST NIGHT! HE WAS FUMING MAD I USED THE TRUTH AND FACTS AND GOT HIM TO ADMIT MCCAIN WOULD PUT HIS COUNTRY 1ST..I BET HE WILL CUT IT OUT BECAUSE I DESTROYES THAT SNIVVLING WEASEL LIB! OBAMAS A MARXIST! SARAHVP.COM!!!
September 5th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Alan NEVER said John McCain would not put his country first. ( I do, though)
He has always said he liked him and just disagrees with the direction he wants to take the country (like 80% of Americans)
These right wingers sound like they are hysterical.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
Johnny,
Why do you say Obama is a Marxist? If he has claimed to be a Marxist, I have missed it. Or perhaps you have some other evidence? Could you point it out please?
September 5th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Um Cara,
I REALLY don’t think these people even know what these words mean.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
TCNY,
Yes, much better. One shows the humility that one does not know His will, and merely hopes that one is fulfilling it. The other implies that one in fact does know His will, and will use political power to enforce it.
I still don’t want Palin to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Oldlefty,
Shhhhh… I’m trying to get Johnny to realize that ; )
September 5th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
OMG! you loser idiots are in denial about obama being a marxist. he sought out marxist professors in college..look at his politics and his wifes comments, straight out of the book!words from his own mouth! his radical affiliations! his pathological lying, his involvement in kenyan politics still, his religion he is ashamed of, his black liberation theology studies..the thing is that barack obama knows liberals are naive and stupid and you have boght it! do you people have a brain? how naive can you people be! such denial! you obviouslly have no clue what marxism is, yet you sure do understand socialism. go read the communist manifesto, look at obamas mentors and his tax plan of wealth redistibution and his ridiculous plan for the economy..wow…you people are idiots! at least support barr or write in ron paul you fools.
September 5th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
LIBERALS ARE IDIOTS….AND THATS WHY 80% OF THIS COUNTRY HATES YOU PEOPLE…DISAGREEMENT WITH THE WAR DOESN’T MAKE ONE A LIBERAL…I DON’T LIKE BUSH, THE WAR, I AM PRO CHOICE WITH THE EXCEPTION OF PARTIAL BIRTH (GO WATCH A VIDEO YOU SLIMY LIBBS) AND PUBLIC FUNDED ABORTIONS. PAY FOR YOUR OWN ABORTION! I DO NOT GO TO CHURCH BUT I BELIEVE IN GOD..YES..THERE IS ONE LIKE IT OR NOT YOU IDIOTS..AND I AM A REPUBLICAN. IM DONE, BECAUSE LIBERALS ARE VERY STUPID AND HAVE ADDISON DISEASE OF THE BRAIN.
September 5th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Johnny,
So the two policy examples you give are:
1> ‘tax plan of wealth redistirbution’
-> any progressive tax system does to an extent. McCain supports a progressive tax system, thus is he a Marxist as well? If not, what are the differences between the two tax plans that makes Obama’s Marxist, without McCain’s being classified as Marxist.
2> Ridiculous plan for the economy
-> which part of this plan is Marxist? And for that matter, what is ridiculous about his plan

September 5th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
OK,
I understand – you have nothing to back up your claims, someone told you he was Marxist and you have accepted that and expect everyone to agree with you.
Thanks for the discussion.

…………………………………….
I just listened to the ENTIRE show on podcast, and the ONLY call that could have been this guy was a guy who was pretending to be a disgruntled Democrat.
Alan only got angry when the guy kept shouting right wing talking points over Alan, revealing himself as a fraud.
September 5th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Everyone has forgotten how to respectfully disagree. We live in what is supposed to be a democracy. And with all of you – both sides – every talking head, every pundit, every i-reporter and blogger, talking to hear themselves, the flood of pointless noise is drowning this country in distractions. And the saddest part is that we are really only being distracted from distractions.
Neither party is really being clear and 100% honest. There is little integrity and quality in our politics and I’m fairly certain that it is because, as I said above, we have lost the ability to respectfully disagree. And now, the politicians are unwilling to come right out, state their case, and let the people decide. Their speeches and these marketing campaigns are designed to decide for us.
There is just simply more than one truth on this planet and in a democracy we choose to agree, for a certain amount of time, on a set of rules, policies, etc, accepting the fact that we can’t all always get our way.
To assert that your ideas and values are more right than mine is to undermine the point of America and to rob humanity of the real freedom – that thing which can not be taken or given by government, can not be locked up in a cell- that is our greatest asset as a nation.
I vote for everyone to shut up, listen, and quietly ask for more than we are getting.
September 5th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
Oldlefty,
This guy crashed and burned the second I challenged him on his Obama is a Marxist rant. Somehow I doubt he could have ‘owned’ Alan in a real time debate, considering Alan has actual justification for statements he makes.
I hope you weren’t expecting to find any actual reasonable debate from Johnny on the show : )
September 5th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Matthew,
Everyone shutting up on a discussion blog and/or radio talk show would make for a might boring blog/talk show.
I personally just ask for people to back up assertions they make when respectfully challenged, as I believe I did.
September 5th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Um Cara
Yeah, you’re right…Good Job!
September 5th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Um Cara
Yes, you’re right… I didn’t mean to imply that the discussion should not continue, but that we should be more attentive to quality and remain respectful of each others positions.
September 5th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
old lefty smokes the bologna pony.
September 5th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
i think your bluffing…email me the pod cast with me on there then old lefty..i think your lying…loser.
Liberal idiots.

September 5th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Once again, I don’t think we need any more noise. It is as simple as ignoring those of us who fail to show any integrity. Conversation is good. Debate is even better. But name calling and juvenile bashing will get us nowhere. So… we’ll let them hunt for attention, but the longer they go without people responding to them, the more likely they are to examine themselves… or take their nonsense elsewhere. Hopefully after they find themselves welcome only in the company of their own kind, they’ll consider a different approach. I truly believe that we can fix the way this country talks to itself.
September 5th, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Matthew,
Very much agree. I miss the ‘kill filter’ of the old days on USENET. Alan needs to implement some real forum software or something, we need some tools to deal with the Trolls.
September 5th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
go to idiots for obama dot com, read and weep you slimy libbs.
