No One?
John McCain’s daughter, Meghan McCain, appeared on NBC’s “Today” show this morning to promote her father’s campaign and plug her new book. Near the end of the interview, she was asked about Barack Obama’s claim that her father “doesn’t get it.”
In spite of the fact that Obama has primarily used that phrase to criticize John McCain’s understanding of economic issues, she reflexively responded by citing her father’s military service – and might have gone a bit too far:
“I have two brothers serving in the military, one that’s about to redeploy to Iraq. My father is obviously a famous war hero. No one knows what war is like other than my family. Period.”
Here’s the video:
h/t Think Progress

She’s so smart and she knows everything.
Sounds like your typical human arrogance. Little different from the people who call up the radio show and tell Alan it’s their turn to talk, as if they have some right to the airtime.

You people really hate America and the Military.
Noted again-Liberals will lose for the third time because they tend to back the most popular instead of the best they have.
You’ve backed the wrong candidate again. Barry’s bloom is off the rose.
Try again in 2016
September 9th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Carol,
Who exactly is you people?
And what makes you think they hate either America or the Military? You seem pretty off topic – that sentence does not seem to be related either to the original post by Joel (a somewhat unfair criticism of McCain’s daughter, in my opinion) or RC’s response (a fair criticism of some of the people who call into Alan’s show).
Are you lost? Did you mean to post in another thread?
September 9th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
“You people really hate America and the Military.”
Your anti-American anti-Democratic views make it plain that you hate dissent, along with everything else that America stands for.
Small surprise.
September 9th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Cara,
You seem to get lost in my posts. Are you on any medication for your ADHD? I’ll go slow for you
You people=Liberals
Read Smithtown=overall tone is hatred of McCain’s experience hence Military and America.
My post is in reference to Smithtown and no this post is correct.
Does this help you?
September 9th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Barry has described dissent as “patriotic”. I see it another way-anti-American.
The examples I use are-Black Panthers, Weatherman,etc
But if you view dissent as patriotic, then you have to admit that the Militia and the KKK are also patriotic
September 9th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Carol,
It depends on the dissent, don’t you think? I think it safe to assume that Barry, or senator Obama, or Barack Hussein Obama, or whatever you want to call him, probably assumed people would understand that.
Rosa Parks, not going to the back of the bus, good patriotic dissent. Standing up for the fact that all men are created equal, etc..
KKK, burning crosses in black people’s lawns to scare them into moving out of the neighborhood, not good patriotic dissent. Not standing up for American principles like all men are created equal, etc…
September 9th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Carol,
Read Smithtown=overall tone is hatred of McCain’s experience hence Military and America.

Um, maybe you should reread the smithtown post. He is talking about McCain’s sister, not John McCain. As far as I know she was not in the military, so it is hard for me to see how that is ‘hatred for Military and America’. His lone mention of John was that he did not support breast cancer research… pretty big stretch to say that is criticizing the military or America.
So, you were in fact confused, as I first suspected. Glad I could help!
September 9th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
What would I do without your guidance Cara.
I can’t explain anymore regarding this-my liberal hives are coming back.
Bye Bye cara
September 9th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Carol,
Maybe if you didn’t just constantly blow up and attack without thinking, you wouldn’t end up being embarrassed by those who point out how wrong you are (not talking about opinions, talking about basic grasp of facts). Your hives probably appear due to embarrassment more than anything.
And if you really can’t stand 1/2 of America, I would say you have a great deal more hatred for America than all the people you have made this vile accusation against.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Barry Hussien Winfrey hates this country.. That is why he wants to REMAKE it.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
The McCain Camp answer to everything- John McCain is a war hero!
The war has certainly impacted our economy… but I really wish she had answered explaining the correlation between the two, vs going directly to the “my daddy’s a war hero” bit.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
I think there are 4,000+ American families that would find “No one knows what war is like other than my family. Period.” just a little offensive. Oh never mind, she’s just a girl.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
You’re wrong John McKee.. most people who live in the real world understand what she meant by using the hyperbole the way she did.
It’s only very shallow , superficial small Lefties who twist words like that.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Vince,
Totally agree with you (see my first post on this thread saying Joel was being unfair), it’s the same as the shallow, superficial, small Righties who are twisting Obama’s words about McCain’s policy of ‘change’ into an insult on Palin. Right?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Oh, Vince… you are wallowing in it, aren’t you. Sad little prick (I’m assuming you are short) – in one breath you can make a non-existent leap from Obama’s ‘lipstick on a pig’ witticism about McCain’s newfound change meme, and in the next say reasonable people know what the daft daughter means when she says no-one knows about the horrors of war except her family.
It was not hyperbole, by the way, it was a stupid mistake that calls for an apology. Even if read charitably as ‘no-one knows more about the horrors of war THAN my family, it’s still an insult to the families of the dead. Where is her corpse?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:49 pm
My immediate family has war heroes in it .. some died in Viet Nam while others survived Iwo Jima and Battle of the Bulge. They, like most veterans I know don’t discuss wartime experiences often if ever.
One of my Marine Corp. buddies who served in Iraq said to me the other day — “He had ENOUGH with the McCain was a POW speeches” –
Is that anti-american ?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Guys, don’t you think you are making too much of this? She simply misspoke the same way Obama misspoke about the pig and lipstick. When one speaks several times a day, one makes mistakes. I don’t think she meant any disrespect to others who have had family members fight and/or die for their country.
Alan Colmes should be ashamed for making this a topic of discussion.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
Y’know what? My father served and fought in WWII, as did 3 of his brothers. One of them didn’t come home, killed in France. I think my family has some idea what war is like. Meghan should be ashamed of herself, and if she hasn’t already apologized to every family that’s ever sent a loved one into a war zone (particularly those who have family in the Middle East now, or have lost loved ones there), then is says a lot about the arrogance and elitism ingrained during her upbringing.
September 10th, 2008 at 12:48 am
She will have to apologise, DKS – saying her family was the only family that knows what war is was as offensive as it gets. Even allowing for the fact that she spoke clumsily and almost certainly didn’t mean to say no-one else knew about suffering, 4,000+ American families and probably 50 times that number of Iraqi families have actually had loved ones die – directly due to the lies, manipulation and foolhardy adventures of the Bush/Cheney regime, enthusiastically cheered on by this woman’s father.
Once again, where is the McCain family corpse?
September 10th, 2008 at 12:49 am
As a Veteran of the Iraq war (2003-04), I am disgusted by her comments and Sentator McCains voting record for Veterans. The notion that Republicans care more for Veterans is absurd.
September 10th, 2008 at 1:05 am
So basically Princess McLame is saying that her family is the only family that knows about war PERIOD? Whoa that scary.
September 10th, 2008 at 3:31 am
I respectfully have to disagree with all of you who think she was being disrespectful. I know many of you know what it is like to have a loved one in war. And I am very humbled by that. But I still contend that it was not her intent. She loves her dad. She is only in her early 20’s and she is not running for office. Give a kid a break.
September 10th, 2008 at 11:08 am
“Maybe if you didn’t just constantly blow up and attack without thinking, you wouldn’t end up being embarrassed by those who point out how wrong you are (not talking about opinions, talking about basic grasp of facts). Your hives probably appear due to embarrassment more than anything.”
Um Cara, well said.
September 10th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Dear Alan
It was so nice to see her interview. I remembered trashing of her father by Bush campaign in primory of 2000. Her sister Bridget eas “McCane’s love child.” So, when Democrats say McCane’s presidency is Bush’s third term. I laugh. They are difernt people. Allthough, they both belong to Republican party. Thus, they have to follow the “party issus.”
People like us are in trouble. We like some Democratic Party issues and some Republican party issues. We are the one known as “Regan Democrats” and “Hillary supporters.”
September 10th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Such a modest lady.
She reminds me of Princess Vespa.
Nooo body knoo-ooo-oows the trrroublle I’vvvee seeen!!
September 11th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
To Obama the word change is just a campaign slogan, whereas McCain and Palin have actually brought about substantive changes in government. Changes which have helped Americans, while Obama has spent his career just talking about it. Obama has spent most of his time in public office absent from his responsibilities, while ambitiously running for the next rung in the ladder, not to serve the people, but rather to further his own position. And, I’m sure most people could relate to McCain and Palin as fellow Americans, more than they can to the Obamas, who chose to spend TWENTY YEARS in the radical
anti-American racist church of Jeremiah Wright … and chose unsavory associates, such as Farrakhan, Pfleger, Rezko, Ayers, etc.. As for Obama’s phony indignation about being a community organizer … Palin never criticized those efforts, she merely, and rightfully questioned it as being the sole experience and credentials for someone to use as qualifications to become President of the United States … and, even then, it was in response to Obama’s attacks at Palin for being the mayor of a small town, when he also neglected to mention that she was Governor as well.
September 14th, 2008 at 11:02 am
Hey Howard, you should know that being the great fiscally responsible reformer that Palin is, she left her small town w/ over 1 mil in debt and under her leadership, the great state of Alaska had about 10X more pork per person then a state like Illinois. But as she said in her interview, its not her fault for asking for all those earmarks, it’s congress’ fault for giving them to her clearly. By the way she flip flopped on the bridge to no where, oh ya that’s REAL change. You represent the tactics being used in this election: flat out degrading Obama’s accomplishments and guilt by association. Keep up the good work, you’re really doing a good job
September 14th, 2008 at 11:48 am
“ou represent the tactics being used in this election: flat out degrading Obama’s accomplishments and guilt by association”
Obama has no accomplishments and all of his associates are guilty of being fanatical supporters of one type of collectivism or another.
September 14th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Hey Vince, you missed a spot there when you tried to clean your hands. But don’t worry I wont tell, we all know the Republican’s hands are o’so clean. You and Howard can go for some freedom fries.
