Barack: “Spare Me The Phony Outrage”

September 10th, 2008, 4:17 PM EDT

“The McCain campaign would rather have a story about phony and foolish diversions than about the future.”

Good for the Obama campaign for fighting back and for not apologizing for what is a totally invented non-issue.

Responses to this post...

  1. I guess it is a fine line between not responding to attacks, and setting your own agenda. But…

I sure hope Obama is able to quickly start setting his own agenda, and not just react to the attacks from the other side. He has been reactive for too long, and the polls are showing it, and we are getting closer and closer to election day.

  2. Obama did a good job in defending himself…. I wonder if he can use this and all the other popularity ads McCain has put out to his advantage at the upcoming debates, thus proving that McCain doesn’t want to focus on issues….. just a thought

    Go Obama

  3. You are nuts. WHEN has Obama discussed the issues…when has he clearly laid out any plan to accomplish his highly stated goals?

  4. Obama for teaching kindegarten kids sex ed? WTH?

  5. Chris:
Obama is not for teaching sex education to kindergarten kids. He is for teaching kids how to protect themselves against sexual predators. He is simply for reiterating what your parents told you when you were young (”don’t take ride from strangers”, “if somebody touches you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, tell your parents”, etc.)

  6. Obama did a great job defending the comment, unfortunately it just will not matter what he says the right wingers will ride it for all the damage to his campaign they can get. It’s just sad!

  7. Good for you, Libby…And republicans don’t want kindergartners to know how to protect themselves from molesters….Why?

    Thanks for pointing this out.

  8. A president does not have the Luxury of making statements that can so easily be mis-construed. He is a very intelligent well spoken man, and he needs to present himself above such pettiness.

  9. Um Cara:
I humbly disagree with you. If Obama ignores the lies from the McCain campaign, it will mean his presidential aspiration’s demise.

Look what happened to Kerry. He chose to ignore the swiftboat ads, thinking the American people were smart enough to see through the lies, and he lost the election.

No, I think that Obama has to disprove McCain’s allegations whenever they arise.

  10. Erica, I’d normally agree with you, but Bush Sr. has been rolling around luxuriantly in mis-statements for the last 8 years. Dick (”F You!”) Cheney, as well.

  11. Libby,

I agree, he has to respond to a point – but if the McCain camp was able to so successfully turn this NOTHING issue into such a big deal, they are going to be able to keep Obama dancing around attacks from now until the election.

He needs to find a way to break out of this… They have been controlling the discussion since the Palin nomination, he needs to take control.

  12. So now is he saying the people of this country are phony? There are alot of people who see this for what it is, a cheap shot. I know this is against the rep. campaign, but they represent the rep. people.
That’s funny considering how he has tried to cover up & deny every bad, disparaging story about himself.

  13. Sarah,
    What a potty mouth.

  14. Working Mom,

I believe Sarah was referring to Cheney’s famous public utterance of this colorful phrase.

So, Dick Cheney is the potty mouth (among other things)

  15. Um Cara, i agree. it’s like chess. he can’t play defense all the time.
However, i do think he’s being very pro-active and clear about his plans, so I’m not too concerned.

  16. Obama has to defend everything he says. Check him out on O’Reilly. He stutters and stumbles and O’Reilly was really pretty easy on him.

Obama is the master of talking at length and saying nothing.

  17. Phony outrage is right.
Hopefully, the BHO gander will be up enough to show strongly in the debates.

  18. Obama is a wonderful man. I’m sorry…I just vomited in my mouth.

OK I’m better. Bottomline, don’t let him near the conference table at any war or peace talks, near the 3am phone, the launch codes to the nukes or for heaven sakes, YOUR CHILDREN.

  19. “WHEN has Obama discussed the issues…when has he clearly laid out any plan to accomplish his highly stated goals?”

Go back to sleep, grandpa. We’ll let you know when it’s all over.

  20. Wow, Working Mom… Sarah’s a potty-mouth for reporting what the evil Cheney says in the Senate, but the foul tempered old guy gets a free pass for calling his drug-addled wife/money-bin a painted trollop and a cunt?

  21. Sarah – That is Exactly Why Senator Obama should be above mis-statements. He needs to be better than the last 8 years.

  22. S.P. – I think it’s you who should be kept away from any conference table etc, since you seem to have a tendency to vomit for no reason at all. Also – consult your doctor re your condition.
While other sensible people make coherent statements, you just blabber. If you don’t agree with Obama’s positions – why don’t you give an example, and give your reasons what you propose instead? Or why you agree with McCain position re same (Though John does not have any opinions that different from Bush’s anyway).

  23. My disagreement with Barry’s proposals cannot be stated, since he states no specifics, just taking points. EXCEPT-The tax on everyone over 250K is a lie. I’ll tell you why. It’s wealth redistribution. Ya know Robin Hood syndrome. It’s bringing back welfare. I make too much money to give it away. Let liberals work for it like I do. I would leave tax cuts in place and stop unecessary gov’t spending in useless programs. Education, environmental and earmark issues to name a few. Let states work out their own earmarks, budgets and tax schedules, not federally.

I have sat behind many conference tables, controlled many budgets and stopped spending for many hospital dept.’s. I get paid big bucks for my consulting services.

    Enough for ya, Rach

P.S. Spontaneous emesis is due to me lying regarding Obama not on any existing health conditions. Thanks for asking. I appreciate your concern.

  24. S.P. you sound very greedy

  25. Budda-
    You sound very needy.

S.P.- You are exactly right. I don’t see why people cannot see this. Wealth redistribution is nothing more than communism.

  26. Libby then why would it be called sex education if this is what is being taught? Look at the sylabus then make your comment

  27. A president does not have the Luxury of making statements that can so easily be mis-construed. He is a very intelligent well spoken man, and he needs to present himself above such pettiness.

Easily so by the blatant stupidity and illogic of the observer, who should be deeply ashamed of himsef.

The only things presented were assertions from the McCain campaign, which they almost surely knew to be false early on, and evidence that wasn’t incontrovertible, proven by the fact that Palin is never mentioned within the context of Obama’s use of the phrase in question.

The entire premise rests on a word association, that of Palin’s recent use of the word “lipstick.” Obama shouldn’t be more careful in order to placate such idiocy, he should call out that idiocy with acerbic wit; he figuratively tear the spewers of this garbage limb from limb.

  28. *wasn’t incontrovertibally supportive of the erroneous assertion.

  29. Um Cara: “Working Mom, I believe Sarah was referring to Cheney’s famous public utterance of this colorful phrase. So, Dick Cheney is the potty mouth (among other things)”

This is what I adore about Working Mom, that absolute inability (or unwillingness) to look into her own psyche and question her own thoughts and beliefs. Or look at a newspaper.

And, of course, it’s paired with an absolute refusal to apologize for being self-righteous and insulting, especially at times when she’s been WRONG about what she’s insulting.

And never mind the attacks, slander and libel emanating from her own party. Nope. I’m sure, when Cheney cusses, it’s because he’s been “provoked,” or he’s just “passionate.”

If quoting Cheney makes me a “potty mouth,” then that makes Working Mom “empty brain.”

  30. Obama’s audience knew what he was saying. After his ill-timed remark they started laughing and chanting: “No more pit bull!”

  31. This is NOT a new issue!!!

the progressive left has wanted and has attempted and carried out such sex education on small children.

this is just a new wave, and note the lies by the Obama side? denial that its even about sex-ed but about protection from predators? if that WAS the case, which its not, if it was, altho its not, if it was, but we know its not then the sex ed would be child protection ed, and they wouldnt be saying graphic things and play acting out hetero and homo sex acts in front of classrooms to get the point across. Its an attempt by the fringe far liberal progressive left to install their view of religion onto America.

next will be the outlawing of the bible, Hussein Obama will surely comply tossing his bible into the fire, if he even owns one? come on, people, he will say, lets burn the bible together, for the greater good.

Obama doesnt use his bible (read or take wisdom from it) anyway so he wont mind

  32. Budda,
I don’t understand why you would not use any given talents you may posess and make some money off of them. I don’t understand why that’s greedy. Why do SOME democrats not like money? Of course, almost all of your Senators and Congressman are very wealthy (But they hate that money they have}, so why would you not persue “The American Dream?” Why would you be content to have yourself live off of govt. subsidies. I’m a Navy dependent and I still don’t use the base for anything because I don’t wan’t to be dependant on them. Help me in this thought process, I’d love to know, seriously.

  33. “Why would you be content to have yourself live off of govt. subsidies.”

I’ve been wondering that about “free-enterprise” corporations and farmers for YEARS.

Incidentally, not everyone wants to get rich, S.P. But everyone in America (everyone who wants and is able to work, that is), deserves to be paid a living wage for their work.

Everyone also deserves to have their gov’t step in, investigate, or remediate situations in which the basic necessities of life (transportation, health, education) suddenly become unaffordable on the average salary.

Heck, even Nixon enacted price controls, and there wasn’t even a war going on. Bush Sr. (I only recently learned) went back on his word and raised taxes, which helped the country tremendously.

  34. Some how I thought Obama was for change, but the more I hear from him the more I know that there is no change! Now McCain and Palin is change, you do not hear that they are sending out any one to dig up any thing bad on Obama. No Obama just has to open his mouth.

  35. Seeing so much out there, O had hope to see more of Mrs. Obama by her man. But were is she?

  36. We always voted Democrat, but this time we are going to vote for McCain. Even my 2 sisters who loved Hillary will With me vote McCain.
How I love them, now we will vote for change!

    GO McCain and Palin

  37. Taking all your Barbies and going home, are you Shelby?

I seriously doubt you’ve ever voted Democrat. But let’s imagine you have.

There seem to be a lot of racist, sexist people in the Democratic party, as in all walks of life. There are a lot of Democrats who are getting older, crabbier and more fearful.

It’s hilarious how people insist they’re going to get more “change” with McCain, who’s surrounded himself with lobbyists and Bush’s people, and who voted with Bush 95% of the time.

  38. and Bush’s people, and who voted with Bush 95% of the time.

This is such a funny and silly claim. I wonder if you noticed Bush and McCain are both Republicans?

McCain is just more of Bush or whatever? well in the sense McCain is Republican, yes. If this was a concern and you studied the differences? well dont even need to elaborate, who in this liberal left studies facts and history?

  39. So the liberal left claims McCain has lied on this. but where is the lie?

    you dems/libs demand that abortion be protected as murder on demand, you claim the murder of children/infanticide or unborn children is your right, your right to conduct Satanic child sacrafice murders with the state’s blessing;

So since the left demands abortion be legal to murder children, it is not unreasonable that the same left says the children we allow to live will be indoctrinated at our discretion?

Its a Jewish saying “from greater to lesser” meaning if the left assumes such control over the children they get to decide who is murdered and who survives? to a lesser extent the left assumes they will decide how children are exposed to things like religion and sexual reproduction education and any and all social implications and nuances.

When voters are outraged? you libs say oh, we never said sex education for children!

but then lying is your (libs/dems) first amendment right to free speech that you demand so much.

If democrats get elected (God forbid) and you force sex education for children and people say hey, didnt we go over this already? didnt you libs say it wasnt sex ed? no, you didnt listen closely. yes you said it on those articles. no we didnt. yes you did. we liberals will now cause some major news event to change the subject. and for those who dont like sex ed for children? sue us. it will take years and it will be too late.

  40. WASHINGTON – A top Hillary Rodham Clinton fundraiser threw her support behind Republican John McCain on Wednesday, saying he will lead the country in a centrist fashion and accusing the Democrats of becoming too extreme.

“I believe that Barack Obama, with MoveOn.org and Nancy Pelosi and Howard Dean, has taken the Democratic Party — and they will continue to — too far to the left,” Lynn Forester de Rothschild said. “I’m not comfortable there.”

  41. Bradley
This is how most Democratic act to any one for any thing! As you can see if you or I would hope to have any faith in any one for all of us they become very ugly to some any one that may go and vote for some one that they know will be the better one for us all! They always badmouth any one, just because they want to hurt you, stop you from every sharing any thing to anthers they do not like! You do not have to believe any thing but there are more and more EX Democratic like me! I will do all I can to let as many I can know how you treated me.

  43. Obama is crying racism and making people more hateful of whites. Whites are tired of the old racism defense. Obama is a preacher of hate like Rev. Wright and Farakhan. You are not alone their are many brothers and sisters with you. We are tired of the old white plantation owner’s liberal democrats keeping us down. Look at the Asians, Indians, Europeans who are successful. They have not submitted to these liberals and their slave owner doctrines the suppress us with.
