Did John McCain Call Hillary A Pig?

September 10th, 2008, 11:09 AM EDT

Of course not.  When John McCain referred to Hillary Clinton’s health care plan as being similar to the one she proposed in 1993, John McCain said,  “I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.”  I don’t recall Democrats going crazy with accusations that John McCain was taking a sexist swipe at Hillary Clinton.

John McCain’s daughter Meghan, on “Fox and Friends” Wednesday morning said, “I mean, I have heard my dad say that the term lipstick on a pig. I don’t like anyone being referred to as a pig in any context. I think there is a lot more educated conversations we can have than these remarks.”

Did Vice President Cheney call John Kerry a pig when he accused John Kerry of talking tough while having, in his view, a weak national security record, and then used the same phrase?

Oh, and former McCain press secretary Torie Clark wrote a book in 2006.  Guess the title.

  1. He sure did. Loud and clear.

  2. Lipstick? Who knows what the speach writers had in mind? Did you see the recent posting on website http://www.healthinsurancerates.com? Do you think that the graphics are photographs or were the photoshopped? Do you think that these offensive images were posted deliberately or not? And, does this posting go to the liberal mentality or is it just an aberation? Show me comperable postings showing Baraak and Michelle or Biden which balances this ugloy act. Doubtful that you will find any.

Hang in ther on Hannity & Combs. Appreciate your contributions and viewpoints.

  3. Alan.

It was OK for the Republicans to use that same sentence all those times, but when Obama is feeding them their own lipstick, they suddenly don’t like the taste.

Give them some more of that Obama, and I am going now to donate 100 dollars for the Obama campaign, and I will make the note that I like to hear more of this.

Look. The rules of the game have changed, and the Obama campaign MUST play with those rules to win.

  4. He SAID it…and if he didn’t get it by the time the dolts sitting behind him did (halfway through the joke), he SHOULD have. If he didn’t mean it, he should have stopped right then…but he didn’t – and the myrmidons gave him a standing ovation.

He can’t have it both ways. John McCain joked about 5M being the threshold for being rich – and qualified it in the very next sentence. nObama has had a lot of fun with the comment, including a commercial built around it.

Hmm, humm, errr, ahhh, defend him all you want to Alan – but I, errr, ahhhh, emmm, LOVE it when he ummm, errrr, ahhhh, ehhhh, mutters without his teleprompter. How long ’till the next time he shoots himself in the foot?

  5. Palin mocked Barack for having been a community organizer, so I’d say, simply:

    Stick it, baby.

(And say hi to all the folks in Podunk.)

  6. This is all very entertaining, watching the left try to squirm out of this one. After all, we have been through decades of “political correctness” brought to us by the left wingers and the liberal media where anyone is sharply criticized for saying anything that might be offensive to anyone. But when the same standards are applied, its “unfair.” I was going to give Obama the benefit of the doubt on this one, but if you watch the clip and listen to the reaction of the crowd, they clearly made the connection to the Palin speech and they approved. The point you miss (or wish could be overlooked) is that this comment comes shortly after the oft-repeated joke from Palin’s speech. I’ll agree that Obama most likely did not intend to publicly insult Palin, but you would think that the master of eloquence would recognize the possibility for a connection and not make the comment – why not just stick with the fish in the newspaper line? This does provide insight into what’s being discussed behind the closed doors of the Obama campaign and it’s not pretty. Yet another in the growing list of Obama “misspeaks”, e.g. fifty-seven states, his Muslim Faith, etc. Are they mistakes or Freudian slips? Let’s face it, this is politics and you have to be careful in what you say.

  7. Sheesh… we aren’t that far away from the elections. Let’s talk about the issues. Let the Palin supporters talk about this if they want, but if Obama supporters continue to react/discuss this kind of non issue, we aren’t going to get anywhere with regards to taking back the lead/winning the election.

  8. When Sarah Palin started all this about her being a bull with lipstick, actually that was a lip liner. The lipstick is in it’s way as the Obama campaign are getting ready. Q_Q

  9. …….. getting ready to give her the real taste of that lipstick. Welcome to MAX FACTOR.

  10. Um Cara

This election is NOT about issues. I don’t hear McCain and palin talk about any. This election is about winning, the issues come later. WHAT do you want now??? issues OR WINNIN!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. WINNING

  12. You want to talk about Change,McCain/Palin need to Change their speech,if their convention speech had a poontang they are warring it out.People are standing in hot sun to hear about Alaska,at least she memorized her lines,he’s still reading notes.Oh yeah,he did pick up the Drill,Baby,Drill.

  13. Alan,

I, for one, believe Obama’s lipstick comment was calculated and deliberate. While Palin does biting satire brilliantly, Obama does not. He ought to knock it off.

Also, Alan, you seem to think that it is inconceivable that Hillary Clinton supporters would somehow now support Sarah Palin. Well, I was a Clinton supporter and am now a Palin supporter. No, I do not agree with her on every issue, but I disagree more with the way Obama secured this nomination: through out-and-out election fraud. I would rather vote for a Republican than vote for a Democrat who has subverted the process. To subvert the process subverts democracy itself.

You don’t have to take my word for it. People have begun to document the abuses on film. You can take a look at the evidence and judge for yourself.

  14. Alan

When George Bush talks about bringing some soldiers home from Iraq without replacing them, implying that things are getting better in Iraq, just like how they are using the surge as a tool to win the election, which they invented “the surge” only to last until the elections is (to influence the election), he does not tell us about the other soldiers from other countries in the world, who will replace them, even if just until the election is over.

  15. HMMMMMMMMMMM have I heard the same campaign speech of Obama over and over –yep…just that it isn’t as memorable as hers

  16. Phony Outrage. Poor conservatives and their delicate feelings and explosive rage at the drop of a pin. It’s been interesting watching the news coverage and how disgusted they are at the “outrage” of another lame ass attack by the no ideas- McCain/Palin ticket. This one might have gone pass the edge of sanity to make the connection on this supposed “attack”.

I guess the Repubs are just counting on the stupidity of voters. No ideas just attacks and outrage at every misspoken word. It’s getting pathetic and “normal” Americans are noticing how conservatives are ripping this country apart with their anger at every one who dares disagree with them…

  17. Carolyn Mann We know why you are Voting for Palin it is evidence that you are sexist first you was a Clinton supporter and I guess since Obama didn’t pick her as VP your mad and you want to talk about attacks Palin speech was nothing but attacks on Obama I did not here one time where she talked about healthcare, gas prices issues oh but wait they agree with the Bush Admin so why would she? Get that Bull out of here!!!!

  18. What the Hell are McCain’s plans?

  19. I agree with you FURYUS I am so sick of these Repub feelings damn your feelings lets talk about the issues and how you guys for the last eight years manage to run America into the ground.

  20. Carolyn Mann — “Well, I was a Clinton supporter and am now a Palin supporter.”

Give us a break ! Do you really think we buy that bull crap ? You’re either voting for Palin simply due to gender or showing inability to vote for a dark skinned man for President. Is it both ?

  21. The Obama campaign must use the same dirty politics the McCain campaign is using. Not because it is better, simply because it work.

The Obama campaign will have all the money the need, and will have a lot more, to play this game fire by fire.

You just can’t win a battle with a water gun while your opponent is using a bazooka.

  22. Melissa you said deceivers and liars attack and not lead, what do you think has been going on for the last eight years where the hell have you been!!!!!!!!! Americans are tired of you REPUBS WE ARE TIRED YOU AND YOUR LIES AND YOUR ATTACKS THAT ALL YOU GUYS HAVE BEN DOING IS ATTACKING LIBS AND DEMS PLEASE YOU HYPOCRITE AND WE ARE SUPPOSE TO JUST SIT BACK AND TAKE IT YOUR CRAZY!!!!!! STOP BEING SO SENSITIVE BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE DISHING IT AND WE ARE GIVING RIGHT BACK IT SHOWS THAT YOU CAN’T TAKE IT.

  23. YES, agree with you Rigano and I believe Obama does get it . He said today “I don’t care what they say about me. But I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and swift boat politics,” “Enough is enough.”

Repubs are master at the slime game. We must not sit on the sidelines and let this election be stolen by the ROVE’s again.

  24. Nat,

If you watch the preview of the film in progress that I posted above, you will see why I have decided to sit down with the Republicans this year. (The first time I will have voted for a Republican, ever, since registering to vote since 1972.) No, I’m not mad that Obama didn’t pick Clinton to be his VP. I would have hated to see her go down with the sinking ship. And I have always supported the Democratic ticket in the past, even when I had to hold my nose to do it.

When I first saw/heard Obama, I thought, what a talented beginner, but that’s all he is a talented beginner. Give him another four to eight years of experience, and he will be my guy — all the way.

Then I started reading and seeing eyewitness accounts of the election abuses that went on in the caucuses. And I became deeply offended — as a Democrat. Not only do I believe that Obama is too inexperienced and unqualified to be president at this point in his career. I also believe that he and his supporters committed egregious acts in the zeal to get him the nomination. This is not acceptable, ever. A vote for Obama would be a vote for such tactics, and I won’t do it.

So call me what you want. Think what you want. But I am prepared to accept four more years of the Republicans that get behind a Machevallian, the-ends-justify-the-means candidate like Obama.

  28. Seems to me that the whole Obama campaign has been based on the anti-Bush sentiment prevailing in this country. The same sentiment inspired by the types of attacks that are now being criticized. I agree, let’s focus on the issues, but both sides are hypocritical on the ’slime’ throwing….

As to issues, I don’t think Obama “gets it.” But, I’m open to persuation. I’ve read his “Blueprint for Change” and it seems that his solution to every issue is greater government involvement and/or spending. Seems to me that this increased gov’t regulation/involvement only opens the door for greater influence by special interest groups and the increased government spending will come at the expense of the economy. So, I don’t think Obama’s plan is in the best interests of the taxpayers.

  29. Nat,

UM CARA I AGREE WITH YOU BUT THESE ARE SOME SCUMS AND I WANT THEM TO KNOW THEY CAN DISH IT AND SO CAN WE YOU CAN’T BRING A KNIFE TO A GUNFIGHT NOW CAN YOU!!!!!

Chill out man. This isn’t a gun fight, or a knife fight, it’s just politics. Unstick your caps lock key, and one exclamation point is enough. Go make a cup of tea, pet your dog, kiss your wife, whatever relaxes you. Seriously, it’s not worth getting this het up. : )

  30. Melisa wrote “YOU ARE JUDGED BY THE COMPANY YOU KEEP”

Meet John McCain top campaign Staff:
.Campaign manager Rick Davis is a major telecommunications lobbyist.(Comcast)

.Senior foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann recently faced scrutiny over his foreign lobbying on behalf of the Republic of Georgia, which has been embroiled in a military conflict with Russia

. Senior adviser Charlie Black was a foreign lobbyist for dictators in Zaire and Angola in the 1980s, fodder for the liberal group MoveOn.org.

Frank Donatelli, the Republican National Committee’s liaison to the McCain campaign, has had clients including Exxon Mobil.

    The final two lobbyists are:

McCain’s congressional liaison, John Green, and national finance Co-chairman Wayne Berman. They both lobbied for Fannie Mae, the troubled mortgage giant.

    Melisa:
I ask you, what do YOU call this company??? ANSWER ME.

  31. One more thing “The McCain camp stresses that Donatelli and Berman are technically not officials of the campaign, though they are advisers”

WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. Melisa, I mean Sean Hannity, who do you think you are? who gives you the right?… shut up.

  33. Um Cara,

Voce e uma respiracao da sanidade em um mar da confusao! Agradecimentos para a claridade….

  34. Enough of what McCain and Palin are against. The time is now to hear what they are for.

  35. Just because you are against something it does not mean you are for it. Enough with this Carl Rove politics.

  36. Ad rem,

E ai! Obrigado cara. Tudo beleza? Este confusao e bem chato, mesmo.

    Abraco

PS threw in some slang for you there, it’s not going to be directly translatable. Basically:

What’s up! Thanks man. I hope everything is ‘beautiful’ (good) with you. This fight is very boring, really.

PSS heheheh (or as a Brazilian would write: huahuahua) I just did a google translate of what I wrote to see how it would come out, as people who don’t speak Portuguese would probably use it to translate:

“Woe! Thank you dear. All beauty? This confusion and flat and even.”

Guess that goes to show, don’t trust auto translators! Translating cara to dear is the funniest, cara should be literally ‘face’ dear would be ‘querido’ – the google translate must be a Portugual Portuguese thing or something…

  37. Rigano, McCain doesn’t talk about his ideas because he doesn’t have any. They are just hoping people won’t ask them any substantive questions for the next few months. That’s why they picked a hypocritical lying unknown woman to keep away from the “liberal” media. Conservatives are under the assumption that they are more of them. These kool-aid drinking mindless sheep…

  38. FURYUS, I can’t agree more Q_Q

  39. The fake outrage of this story. Yet even in this blog there are attacks on Michelle Obama. Calling republicans hypocrites is just getting tiresome. The country can’t be this stupid to keep these fools in charge…

  40. Lucifer

That was uncalled for. You sound like you are from the other side you moron.

  41. OMG, this is so depressing reading these comments. How can anyone with a brain believe Obama was smearing Palin with that? It’s astonishing. When candidates say, “The American voters are smart enough” to see through this and focus on the issues, by most of the moronic comments here, they’re clearly not smart. Sheep. And Mr Colmes, you need to start taking your half of your TV show back or take your name off it. Playing weak defense when Hannity dominates and dictates the agenda won’t get it done. That’s what the Democratic party does. Unfortunately. C’mon man.

  42. I can’t quit commenting on the absurdity of this story.

    Madness.

    It’s madness…

  43. …. It

  44. Stated this the other day but it has got to be stated again

I’m voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.

I’m voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

I’m voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq, I trust that the bad guys will stop what they are doing because they now think we are good people.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that people who can’t tell us it will rain on Friday, CAN tell us that the polar ice caps WILL melt away in 10 years if I don’t start driving a Prius.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that businesses should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe oil companies profits of 4% on a gallon of gas is obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% is’nt

Finally I’m voting Democrat because I love the fact I can now marry whatever I want and I’ve decided to marry my horse.

  45. Ad Rem & Um Cara: If you guys put on lipstick, will you start posting in pig latin? (Thank you, thank you. Tip your waitresses….)

Carolyn Mann: “…accounts of the election abuses that went on in the caucuses. And I became deeply offended — as a Democrat.”
If you’re outraged by voting shenanigans, why would you vote Republican, who stole the election in 2000 (which Republican Aunt Agnes gleefully observed) and 2004 (hello, Ohio)?

Melissa: “Here are the facts liberals you are being led by deceivers and liars that can only attack and not lead.”
What a cogent summary of the GOP’s last 20 years.

  46. McCain/Palin stand for getting the government out of your way so you can enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Obama want to burden you with additional taxes and government programs – merely a different shade of lipstick on the communist pig.

  47. Lucifer and No McCain,

It is supporters like you that will utimately cost Obama the election. Your comments are so ignorant, so hateful, they turn people off and make them even more hardened in their opposition to your candidate.

Lucifer’s comment disgusts me, pure and simple. Civilized people, if they think such a foul thought, know enough to keep such filth to themselves.

No McCain’s comment is just typical. He, and so many other Obama defenders, can’t allow that someone might oppose Obama on principal. When you can’t think of anything else to say, you scream racism — even though my comments are not racist, nor am I.

You know nothing about me. If you did, you would know that my daughter’s BFF from Kindergarten until the girl died suddenly and mysteriously at 22 was a black girl. She spent many days and nights in our home, as our daughter did in hers. In fact, my daughter went off to England with the girl and her family for five weeks their freshman year in high school. If I were a racist, do you think I would have allowed my daughter to have contact with this girl and her family?

These kinds of attacks are demagoguery. You do your candidate an injustice.

  48. You called Obama a pig. I am outraged!

  49. I’m just throwing this out there. Do you really think the republicans want a woman in the white house?

  50. Wow Carol. You allowed your child to be friends with a black child. What a humanitarian you are…

  51. Um Cara,

Hah!!! Actually been usin’ Yahoo’s “Babel Fish”, which you’re right, gave me a really odd translation: “Hey there, expensive debtor! This confusion and flat good, exactly. Hugs.” Ah, the pitfalls of foreign language use! Once had this Japanese friend I played tennis with, said “Tanochinde kudesai” , meaning let’s have fun. She only heard ,”Shinde kudesai”, which translatesa as “You die…or drop dead”! We had a good laugh after a little explanation, but it taught me a good lesson.

  52. The Washington Post reports that Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) is “being asked by a local Republican activist to release more than 1,100 e-mails she withheld from a public records request, including 40 that were copied to her husband, Todd.” Invoking a favored practice of the Bush administration, Palin has claimed executive privilege to keep the e-mails secret — despite the fact many of them were sent to Todd, who is not an elected official.

  53. Sarah,

    At’sthay unnyfay!!! ; -}

  54. Chris, I’m glad you’ve stopped drinking the Kool-Aid and will be voting Democratic this year. But your cult deprogramming must continue…

I’m voting Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.
(That’s right in many ways, congratulations for seeing the light! Because apparently, you believed you could afford a $250K house with an ARM on a $35K salary, you’ve purchased a flat-screen TV out of your child’s college tuition savings, and you’re a tight-fisted Christian who wants women to have kids, then kick them off welfare. We’ll try to save you from yourself, as Republicans are wont to do — hello farmers and bankers!– but there’s only so much…)

I’m voting Democrat because freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.
(I’m glad you agree that hate speech is never a good idea, and that the Fairness Doctrine needs to be reprised because it truly opens up FREE speech on our public airwaves that are owned by ALL American people.)

I’m voting Democrat because when we pull out of Iraq, I trust that the bad guys will stop what they are doing because they now think we are good people. (Hold on there, Mr. Optimism. They’ve hated our guts, and they’ll always hate our guts. It doesn’t matter if we stayed there 20 more years or 2, you won’t see yellow smiley faces on their people. So let’s start bailing out our own economy now, yes?)

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that people who can’t tell us it will rain on Friday, CAN tell us that the polar ice caps WILL melt away in 10 years if I don’t start driving a Prius. (Home-skooling is popular among Repubs, I know, but while I appreciate your newly-found sense of global awareness — it’s not just for the economy, you know!– I have to break it to you: Climatologists and meteorologists aren’t the same thing. You’re on the right track for preserving the environment for your future grandchildren’s grandchildren, though. Kudos!)

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that businesses should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as THEY see fit.
(So glad you agree about corporate fat cats walking away from dying businesses with their golden parachutes, while millions go on unemployment! It’s great that you agree that deregulation has pretty much allowed energy, banking, airline, and other industries to require major bailouts or go belly up. Props on your enlightening!)

I’m voting Democrat because I believe oil companies profits of 4% on a gallon of gas is obscene but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% is’nt.
(I know, it’s a bummer Bush arranged to jack up the prices to help fund his war. But at least your Prius will help you get better gas mileage!)

Finally I’m voting Democrat because I love the fact I can now marry whatever I want and I’ve decided to marry my horse. (Since we celebrate freedom of religion here, I suppose if you can find a veterinary church for animals, congratulations & best wishes! Just try not to break bestiality laws, and don’t expect your civil union to ever be recognized by the U.S., no matter how long you’ve dated Mr. Ed. Or is it Mrs. Ed? Give my best to your love-ponies.)

  55. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/09/AR2008090903044.html

  56. Sarah,

    Booooooooo!!!! ;^)

  57. Carolyn Mann, this is why I doubt you’ve ever voted Democrat:

“Your comments are so ignorant, so hateful, they turn people off and make them even more hardened in their opposition to your candidate.”

Have you ever listened to Rush Limbaugh? Ann Coulter? Or for that matter, Republican responses on this blog by Jerry’sRollin?

Your self-righteous assertion speaks to the heart of the RNC’s made-up Lipstick quagmire: Why are liberals and Democrats required to be such nice guys, while the GOP can continue attacking, slandering, and lying (as it’s done unabated for the past 20 years)?

It would be nice if Dems could continue to take the high road, but it just ain’t working.

  58. Obama calls Palin a pig. Do you remeber Red Foxx on Sanford and son. Micheele is Aunt Easter

  59. Sarah

You are sick, What kind of logic is that? get a life.

  60. Love-ponies….she said love-ponies…….

  61. I REALLY hope the whole show tonight is not about this pig stuff. I am listening to whoever it is on fox radio right now, and his whole show appears to be about this. Spencer Hewes or something?

Anyway, Alan, please find some other topics for the show, even if it is to bring a psychic on the show (which normally is my least favorite thing to listen to, but this Pig controversy is my new least favorite topic)

  62. Cara & Rem: Er-yay elcome-way.

(Alannnnn! Make ‘em stop speaking Latin behind our baaaacks! We don’t know what they’re saaaaaying and it’s meeeean!)

Ooo. Wow. I sounded just like an outraged, whiney Republican just now. Gee! I feel so…Self-righteous and upstanding! Is this what it feels like? The power! It gives me chills! ;)

  63. Percy,

Obama calls Palin a pig. Do you remeber Red Foxx on Sanford and son. Micheele is Aunt Easter

I get it… Michelle Obama is black, and so was Aunt Esther. Man, that is some funny stuff, and not the least bit racist! Really good joke. Congrats!

  64. Rigano: “Sarah, You are sick, What kind of logic is that? get a life.”

Dude, what can I say? I was raised Republican.

  65. Are Democrats really for the “Fairness” doctrine? Or is it only when it allows them to monitor/regulate the AM radio waves. Wait, this would mean Oprah would have to let Palin on her show. So much for the Democrat interpration of “free speech.”

  66. Sarah: “what can I say? I was raised Republican”

Sarah That was exactly the point. Rest my case Q_Q

  67. Full of hate lefties are the most bigoted folks in the country

  68. Hey, Joe S.– Yeah, it WOULD mean Palin would have to be on Oprah’s show. I’d consider that a good thing, wouldn’t you?

It’s about free SPEECH, not free SILENCE, as in, silencing the opposite side by not giving them an equal forum, with equal time.

  69. Oprah Winfrey is one that Carl Rove politics can’t intimidate. As far as I am concerned, she told them to f*** off, when they wanted Sarah Palin to appear on her show. You tell me one show, left or right, that would do that at this time, when they are begging Sarah Plain to appear on their shows and networks.

  70. Vince,

Full of hate lefties are the most bigoted folks in the country

Nah, Hate + Ignorance = Bigotry regardless of which side of the political fence one is on. Plus there are plenty of bigots with no political views whatsoever.

  71. Lefties dont care about corruption done by their allies. For them pursuit of power is all that matters… and dirtying their cause by highlighting abuses is not permitted. They’re almost like Muslims in regards to how loyal they must be to the tribe.

  72. .. Just imagine the kind of rating and money advertisers are wiling to shell out for a 30 second spot if Sarah Palin would appear. Oprah was above all that.

  73. I think it should be up to Oprah as to who she wants on her show, same goes for Alan, Rush and whoever else. Let the audience decide if they are making the right choices – noone has to listen. If you institute a regulation imposing a requirement that Oprah had to let Palin on, it’s no longer free speech, but gov’t mandated speech. That’s a bad thing.

If you don’t think your opinion is getting voiced, start your own show and voice it. That’s a good thing.

  74. Sarah don’t be too harsh with the cons. They have delicate feelings and an explosive rage…

  75. [...] Did John McCain Call Hillary A Pig? By Alan When John McCain referred to Hillary Clinton?s health care plan as being similar to the one she proposed in 1993, John McCain said, ?I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it?s still a pig.? 80. I’m so sick of this BS!

The conservatives can say anything (ANYTHING) about Obama, and it’s fine.

But Obama merely repeats the exact words of McCain to describe an issue, and all of the sudden he’s the Anti-Chri*t again!

    “Fair and Balanced” my A**!

  81. Joe S.

It’s more than that my friend. Why do you think they wanted Sarah Palin to appear precisely on Oprah Winfrey’s show?? while shows like Rush and others will twang if she appear on their shows. It’s all about lipstick my friend Q_Q

  82. Vince,

Lefties dont care about corruption done by their allies. For them pursuit of power is all that matters… and dirtying their cause by highlighting abuses is not permitted.

See any parallels in your statement and the (mostly) conservative U.S. support of the Pinochet regime during the cold war, for example? He was an ally that did even worse things than mention the word pig in a speech.

  83. To McCain and Palin, change is like sale. A word used only to mislead and get you in.

  84. Absolutely, Oprah controls a major media outlet. She has the power to provide or deny access to her audience which is a significant number of voters. It’s pretty clear why Palin would want to be on the show, and why Oprah does not want Palin on the show. At the end of the day, her viewers will decide whether it was a good choice or not. My point was simply that the same people who are clamoring to have the “fairness” doctrine reinstituted to silence/oppose the right wing am radio shows, are also supporting Oprah’s decision not to invite Palin on the show. Seems a bit hypocritical to me.

  85. can anyone recommend a good book on moose skinning?? with the price of food and gas i may have to resort to that.

  86. Why was Obama so nervous when he used the line? He was practically stuttering. Was it just because his speechwriter put in a phrase that was unknown to a guy who’s never set foot on a pig farm? Or was it because he knew what he was about to get himself into and he was still trying to decide if the cheap laugh was worth it?

Regardless of Obama’s intentions, there’s no doubt whatsoever what that crowd that gave him the standing ovation thought. They heard the line and they went wild, not because they were a bunch of good ole boys glad to hear him talk like them, but because they immediately and instinctively thought it was a slam on Sarah Palin. If Obama was naive enough not to intend it as a slam, his supporters still took it as one and liked it. Obama actually seems like a fairly classy guy. I can’t say the same for a lot of his supporters.

  87. Joe S.:

“I think it should be up to Oprah as to who she wants on her show, same goes for Alan, Rush and whoever else.”

Political candidates who directly affect our lives are not just anyone. Controversial issues that require deep thought and consideration on all sides are not just any topic.

The airwaves belong to the American people, not to Rush Limbaugh. Not to the Republican party. Not to the corporations who use our public airwaves to make a buck, although we’ll allow them to use those airwaves, for a fee, and as long as they subscribe to FCC regulations (which was what the Fairness Doctrine was).

“Let the audience decide if they are making the right choices – noone has to listen.”

The audience currently is not being given enough information to know whether they are making “right choices.” What’s even more disturbing is, Republican sheep are clamoring that they do not WANT information that might contradict their beliefs, so obviously the repeal of the FD is working. This is another piece of evidence that the GOP is not interested in a well-informed country that can reach solutions by considering all sides and coming up with effective compromise.

“If you institute a regulation imposing a requirement that Oprah had to let Palin on, it’s no longer free speech, but gov’t mandated speech.”

The gov’t isn’t telling Palin what to say. The gov’t isn’t telling Oprah what to say. The gov’t, under the Fairness Doctrine, would absolutely be telling irresponsible broadcasters that they have a civic and societal responsibility to use the PUBLIC airwaves to keep American citizens well-informed on all the issues.

If you’re so into “choice,” why not give Americans more choices in ideas and thoughts?

“If you don’t think your opinion is getting voiced, start your own show and voice it.”

To what end? I just use the public airwaves to render public attacks and political editorials (which the Bush administration encouraged in 2000)? How does that solve anything?

Why not just bring back a 40-year-old, good idea that was absolutely All-American, but didn’t allow Limbaugh, Coulter, et. al. to encourage hatred, divisiveness, and willful ignorance in this country?

The Fairness Doctrine doesn’t limit ANYONE’S free speech– it just encourages MORE speech.

  88. Joe S

Oprah Winfrey does not want Sarah Palin on her show because she is for Obama, Just like other right wing shows are for McCain.

Oprah should pump all her power to deny the scammers from scamming us for another 4 years

  89. Sarah,

Alan has commented on this before, and I believe him… He said that during the fairness doctrine days, stations were so afraid of the red tape and bureaucracy associated with making sure it was all even that for the most part they just completely stayed away from political advocacy content on the radio.

So the unintended net effect would be less political speech, all the way around.

  90. Tom Hanna, I’ve never set foot on a pig’s farm, but I know the “lipstick on a pig” phrase, as well as “making a silk purse from a sow’s ears.”

And, never roll in the mud with a pig: You just get dirty and the pig enjoys it.

    And, “in a pig’s eye.”

    That’s just the pig references!

I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.

Why, he’s all hat and no cattle.

We ate everything but the moo!

My cat bought the farm the other day.

So see, Tom Hanna? You don’t have to have set foot on a farm, or seen a football game, or been in WW2, or any other slang-environment to use them.

Or are the Republicans intent on ‘milkin’ this all they can?

  91. Sarah,

Or are the Republicans intent on ‘milkin’ this all they can?

LOL! you are on a roll today with the jokes : )

But you should stop horsing around, this is serious stuff!

  92. Sarah

    LOOOOOOOOL very nice Q_Q

  93. Sarah

Lets look at this Fannie and Freddie are Gov’t funded, the same gov’t that broke social security.

LMAO Bush jacked up prices, when did he become a DICTATOR?

Obama will rescend the Bush tax cuts. Well lets look at the numbers

    1999 Clinton 2008 Bush

    30k Single Tax 8,400 Tax 4,500
    50k Single Tax 14,000 Tax 12,500
    75k Single Tax 23,250 Tax 18,750

    60k MARRIED Tax 16,800 Tax 9,000
    75k MARRIED Tax 21,000 Tax 18,750

I would assume that you fall into one of these categories and I quess you don’t mind giving your money to the gov’t. Guess Obama will need that money to assist all the illegals that are here when he establish gov’t Health Care.Well lets look at those numbers.

12 billion spent on primary and secondary schooling for children here illegally!

11- 22 billion spent on welfare to illegals each year.

3 million/DAY to incarcerate illegal aliens!

Unfortunately we do not hear about the billions spent on illegals and how this effects the American people since OUR tax dollars go to fund these programs.

The Dems have been in control for 2 years prior to those elections gas prices wer 2.19. Since the elections it has soared to 3.50+ yet the Dems have not passed a bill to the Pres to help lower the price….WHY? Don’t BLAME Bush it is Congress and The House who make laws and the PRESIDENT can only veto these laws yet with the Dems having the Majority they could override his veto.

  94. “Alan has commented on this before, and I believe him… He said that during the fairness doctrine days, stations were so afraid of the red tape and bureaucracy associated with making sure it was all even that for the most part they just completely stayed away from political advocacy content on the radio.”

Um Cara, I’ve read that before about the history of the Fairness Doctrine, but I’m not buying it for an instant. It’s a blanket statement, for one thing.

Plus, there are many generational trends that happen in America. Fearful, one-sided, bureacracy-avoiding station managers get replaced by their rebellious kids– brave, civic-minded, unilateral station owners.

I just find it extremely suspicious that the “chilling effect on discourse” idea came about under Republican rule, and Republicans have battled it every time.

All due respect to you and Alan, but I’d like my airwaves back now, please.

  95. Let me clarify Fannie and Freddie is a Gov’t Sponsored Enterprise (GSE)

  96. Carolyn Mann,
You said your not mad Obama didn’t pick Hillary as VP, but you still didn’t say if you would vote for Obama if had picked her for VP? If your answer is yes, I think you are voting for a gender not the policies.

  97. If you read the comment below and can’t see he was talking about the health care plan of Hillary’s then I guess your understanding the english language is different than mine.

“I believe Americans want to be part of a system that offers high quality care, that respects their individual dignity and is available at reasonable cost,” the Arizona senator said. “Unfortunately, the American health care system as it is currently structured fails this test.”

McCain criticized Democratic contenders for offering what he called costly universal health care proposals that require too much government regulation. While he said he had not studied Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s health-care plan, he said it was “eerily reminiscent” of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.

“I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig,” he said of her proposal.

  98. Dear Alan

I am an older mother. One thing I was taught when I was growing up.”Two wrong saying dose not make it right.” My grand father used to say “women talks too much and they ware not qualified to be a doctor.” Was he correct? Can my 30 year old son can say it to her sister? He also had name for every one but Italion-Catholics. There were Italions and the other people. Was he corrct? Pig and lipstick is reminding me of him.Trashing women is horrible. We are “the foot soldgers.” We are puting up with political, social and religious insults most of our lives. Who said what mean nothin however, insult is an insult. Libaral or Coservative women are women.

  100. Chris,

Bush is the elected leader of what is presumed to be the world’s Superpower. You’re telling me he CAN’T have any power over oil prices? Please. Kennedy sent a man to the moon.

Curiously, prior American Presidents have asked OPEC to meet about oil prices, with positive results.

Not so, with Bush Jr. When he met with them earlier this year, OPEC pointed out the Bush administration’s handling of the economy had every bit to do with why our weenie American dollar can’t buy as much gas, and pointed out that our own oil companies are holding out on us:
    __________________
Chakib Khelil, Algeria’s oil minister and OPEC’s president this year, said Wednesday that the high price of oil was due not to a lack of supplies, but instead resulted from the “mismanagement of the U.S. economy” that has helped send the dollar tumbling. “If the prices are high, definitely they are not due to a lack of crude,” Khelil said in Vienna. “They are due to what’s happening in the U.S.”

He added: “There is sufficient supply. There’s plenty of oil there.”

Most energy analysts agree there is no shortage of oil. Commercial oil inventories are high, and refiners are not lacking oil.
    __________________

As for taxes: Am I thrilled about taxes? Not if I think the money is being blown on a Bridge to Nowhere.

But if taxes are being spent on expanding public transportation to semi-rural areas (to combat gas usage), if it’s going to fill the PARENTING gaps that are currently plaguing our schools (a lot worse than illegal immigration, I can tell you! Let’s see, teen pregnancy, drug monitoring, gun detection, etc.), if it’s going to improve our country (and our poor, sick, elderly, or moms and kids) in direct and indirect ways, than they’re groovy. I just don’t like fiscal waste.

Speaking of fiscal waste, I’d agree with you about illegal immigration, but until corporations and small businesses stop hiring them, they’ll be flooding our country. And, until we stop supporting them with our taxes (see?! I agree with you!), they’ll be flooding our country.

But illegal immigration, to me, is a red herring. It’s something my congresswoman trotted out at a meeting one day a few years ago, and I almost puked when it became clear it was going to become one of those “cause du jours.”

Democrats have had a thin margin in Congress for 2 years, but with record-setting fillibustering from the Republicans.

Again, “compromise” is not a bad word. “Considering all sides,” might be a good idea.

  101. Perhaps this is a good time to put to bed a very old and tacky Analogy. Lets also not forget that timing and perception are two crucial ingredients in any situation. Senator Obama’s Timing of using this analogy is unfortunate simply because it comes on the heels of the Pitbull with lipstick joke. So yes it can easily be misconstrued as a tasteless comment. This is only an election but it illustrates how important the verbage a leader uses is, and what kind of firestorm can erupt around a careless statement.

  102. Incidentally, universal health care ROCKS. I had a taste of it, unfortunately, on a trip to Europe. I can’t believe that a procedure that would’ve cost probably $10,000 in this country (and more than $1,000 for my deductible), was only $450 in Italy. The care was better, the wait was less, and the process was quick, simple and understandable.

Incidentally, McCain already enjoys free health care. All of our congresspeople do. We pay for it. Many times over, with our taxes, and then he gets money from the insurance lobby.

Now I WOULD DEFINITELY be willing to cut out their free health care!

  103. Remove the lipstick from a pig, and you are left with a pig. Remove the lipstick from Sarah, and you are left with …. nothing.

  104. Sarah,

Incidentally, McCain already enjoys free health care. All of our congresspeople do. We pay for it. Many times over, with our taxes, and then he gets money from the insurance lobby.

Now I WOULD DEFINITELY be willing to cut out their free health care!

    Here here!

And just about every reasonably wealthy country, and many non wealthy countries, manage to provide health care for their citizens.

People love to compare their private benefits here with public benefits elsewhere to show how horrible public health care is.

A more relevant comparison is to show how NO health care compares with free public health care. It compares fairly favorably, I would say!

And people can still have their private policies if they want something better – we just don’t have to let people die of treatable conditions, solely because they are poor.

  105. Lopa Palin referring herself to a pitbull should have insulted you as well. That dog is not going to bite!!!!!

  106. Sarah – I notice you did not include Air America, Colmes, Bill Maher, Al Franken, MSNBC, CNN, CBS, ABC or other left wing supporters on your list of people who’s voices should be silenced or opposed…There is nothing stopping more liberal programs, except the fact that there is a limited market..

You state that “The gov’t, under the Fairness Doctrine, would absolutely be telling irresponsible broadcasters that they have a civic and societal responsibility to use the PUBLIC airwaves to keep American citizens well-informed on all the issues.”

Who gets to decide what is “well-informed” on all issues? Sounds like great makings for a propoganda machine that drives one parties’ interests. You can try to spin it all you want, but it ends up as a content mandate, which is not “free” speech.

Limbaugh, Colter et al. are popular and have a following because people agree with them and what they have to say. What’s really interesting is that you don’t hear the right wing saying that Bill Maher or the other liberal commentators have to have “fair” content on their shows. So, it would appear that it is really the left wing who does not want to be exposed to right wing ideas.

  109. Joe S., please remove the wax from your ears: No one’s right to free speech should, or would, be “silenced” under the Fairness Doctrine. On the contrary, why would you be afraid to hear both sides?

Maher is on cable, I believe, something that is NOT free, but is paid for by cable or satellite subscribers. Do you really not know the difference?

“Who gets to decide what is “well-informed” on all issues? Sounds like great makings for a propoganda machine that drives one parties’ interests.”

Funny, that’s exactly what AM radio is right now. And at one time, cable news networks even strove to clearly delineate between fact and opinion, but no more. I blame all the news outlets for this.

“You can try to spin it all you want, but it ends up as a content mandate, which is not “free” speech.”

No, Joe S., you’re the one who’s furiously spinning because you hate and fear the idea of opening citizens’ minds to other possibilities, other ideas, etc. It’s what’s really undermining this country’s intelligence, more so than anything else requiring some kind of “culture war.”

What I love about the Republican party and free speech, is that they constantly point to Hollywood and whine about all the sex out there, and demand that it cleans up its act.

But violence and hate over the airwaves, personal attacks, mockery and libel, are all “free speech.”

“Limbaugh, Colter et al. are popular and have a following because people agree with them and what they have to say.”

Limbaugh and Coulter, et. al., are popular because Hate seems to sell just as much as Sex, these days. I partly blame it on Y2K, aging vets and baby-boomers, a fearful and cult-like embrace of fundamentalism, 9/11, fear of the unknown, etc. They’re also popular because corporations and businesses are largely headed by Republicans, who don’t want taxes raised, and prize their pocketbooks over the welfare of the country.

  112. Sarah – Not surprisingly, you miss my point entirely. I’m trying to say that there are more than enough opportunities for everyone’s opinions to be voiced and heard – without your so-called fairness doctrine. The Government should not be forcing me, or you, or anyone else to listen to anything! In most cultures, that would be defined as brainwashing.

Interesting that you would suggest that I hate and fear other ideas. I’m here reading this blog, because I want to hear your ideas and thoughts. The disappointing part is that there isn’t much behind the sound bites.

  113. Joe S.

The Government should not be forcing me, or you, or anyone else to listen to anything! In most cultures, that would be defined as brainwashing.

Who, exactly, has called for forcing you to listen to anything?

  114. Um Cara – Sarah is advocating that everone be forced into listening to her side of the issues.

(4:33) The audience currently is not being given enough information to know whether they are making “right choices.” What’s even more disturbing is, Republican sheep are clamoring that they do not WANT information that might contradict their beliefs

(6:11)No, Joe S., you’re the one who’s furiously spinning because you hate and fear the idea of opening citizens’ minds to other possibilities, other ideas, etc. It’s what’s really undermining this country’s intelligence, more so than anything else requiring some kind of “culture war.”

  115. K Watson,

You asked if I would have voted for Obama if he had picked Hillary as his VP. Truthfully, that’s a question I’ve grappled with a great deal. His chosing her would have shown a sincere desire on his part to unify the party, a party I’ve belonged to, loved, and stridently defended for 36 years. And that would have meant a lot to me — as a jesture.

But instead of extending a hand of friendship to Hillary and her supporters in the interest of party unity, he gave her the back of his hand. And that act has just reinforced my initial feelings that he is too inexperienced, too lacking in political acumen, and too lacking in judgment to win in November — not just for his slights to the Clintons, which many of us found offensive, but also because of the truly questionable people he has chosen to surround himself with. Add in the caucus cheating, the flip-flops on most of the issues he initially campaigned on, and it makes for a candidate that I don’t trust and can’t support. (Please take the time to watch the film I linked to above before you go off on me about this. I think the evidence is convincing, and you might, too, if you actually took the time to investigate what I’m saying.)

And perhaps there is a bit of gender politics in my decision to vote the McCain/Palin ticket. But why is that any worse than 90 percent of African Americans voting for Obama because he’s one of them? Besides, I have always liked McCain and, in 2004, liked the idea of John Kerry adding McCain to the Democratic ticket as his VP. Though I will admit that McCain is pandering to the right at the moment, he is essentially a moderate Republican. I trust him. I think he’s earned the right to be president. And Palin was just the lipstick on the elephant.

  117. Now Sarah lets be truthful

    AP Story
Opec not likely to slash output

    Pablo Gorondi

Mr. Khelil blamed speculators for large fluctuations in oil prices. He also said ” when (the oil price) went up the dollar was going down and now that the dollar is strengthening, the oil price is going down.” There was nothing about mismanagement of the economy.

  118. Um Cara, Joe S. is a lost cause. You can tell by the way he says “Sarah is advocating that everone be forced into listening to HER side of the issues.”

He tries to personalize things and falsely twist them into someone else’s agenda, instead of thinking about solutions for unifying the country.

Truly, words were never spoken by a man so afraid that the Republican base would be shaken if people hear ALL sides of the issues, in the same venue.

  119. Now Chris, let’s see if you even know what Truth looks like.

I cut and pasted directly from the NY Times, earlier this year.

But then, that’s not convenient for you now, is it?
