What Sarah Palin Said To Charlie Gibson
Here is some of what Sarah Palin said in her first sit-down interview since becomming the GOP VP nominee.

On whether the US would have to go to war with Russia if Georgia joined NATO and Russia attacked Georgia:
“Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you’re going to be expected to be called upon and help. And we’ve got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable.”
On her statement that the Iraq war is “a task from God.”:
“I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words. But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.”
On her saying “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”:
“I believe that there is a plan for this world and that plan for this world is for good. I believe that there is great hope and great potential for every country to be able to live and be protected with inalienable rights that I believe are God-given, Charlie, and I believe that those are the rights to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That, in my world view, is a grand — the grand plan.”
On whether she is sending her son, who is being deployed to Iraq, on a “task from God”:
I don’t know if the task is from God, Charlie. What I know is that my son has made a decision. I am so proud of his independent and strong decision he has made, what he decided to do and serving for the right reasons and serving something greater than himself and not choosing a real easy path where he could be more comfortable and certainly safer.

Guess this answers the question, She can’t talk if there is no teleprompter in front of her.
I like her even more now.

Sarah Palin Interview Grade A+
September 11th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
If the Lord is always on the side of what’s right (Lincoln), and Palin called the Iraq war a “task from God,” then it follows that she is presuming that this country is on the “right side of the war.” So either she didn’t say “task from God” (I don’t have a transcript of that in front of me), or she is revising her quote to make it consistent with Lincoln’s remarks to the clergy.
Quoted: “When one preacher remarked that he hoped ‘the Lord was on our side,’ Lincoln reportedly said that he did not know about that. ‘The Lord is always on the side of the right,’ the president allowed. ‘But is it my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on the Lord’s side.’

Rick,
Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.
I’m no fan of Palin, but she is clearly praying/hoping that we are on God’s side, not stating that we are on God’s side.
September 11th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Um Cara,
A+ for your honisty and integrity.
September 11th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Um Cara,
That would be “honesty”……oops…
September 11th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Cara, I am taking issue with the “task from God” quote (again, I’m assuming she actually said that at some point, based on Gibson’s question). If we are on a task from God (as she says), and God is always right (as she cites Lincoln as saying), then it follows that she presumes we are on the right side of the war.
She may also be praying that we are on the right side of the war, the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive. But Lincoln was firmly on the “I don’t know” side, as opposed to the “we are doing this because it is God’s intent” side of the coin (penny?)
Maybe I’m nitpicking.
September 11th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Political season use to be fun for me. I used to enjoy the debates, the process of choosing the candidate, weighing the options and arguing with people why my side is right, for crying out loud I fought for Bob Dole in 96. But for the first time in my life I’m not having fun. I’m scared.
I don’t want to wake up November 5th and know that I will have no health care I can afford because it’s going to be the same. I don’t want to know that my mom may not be able to afford her health insurance for much longer, and that the medications she needs will be out of her grasp. I don’t want to wake up knowing our President is engaging in a war on science and replacing it with religion. I don’t want to wake up knowing that the North Pole will be gone and we are drilling for more oil. I don’t want to wake up afraid of how we will deal with a world unwilling to come to our aid internationally.
And if McCain wins, all of those things will happen. He’s promised it on his website, through his rhetoric, and through Palin’s rhetoric, that he will make sure we continue to go in the direction we’ve been going.
Just because he calls it change, doesn’t make his commitment any less scary.
September 11th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Rick,
That quote I gave was the quote that the ‘task from god’ discussion all started from. Read it and tell me whether you agree with my interpretation, or whether you really think she was presuming to know the mind of God.
If you don’t think my quote is what she really said, Google ‘Palin task from God’ and you will find it on a bunch of different sites, the video is probably still out there too.
Believe me, I have no motive to defend Palin, other than the fact that she deserves it on this particular issue. There are plenty of legitimate issues to attack her on : ) And I really don’t want her to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency (though I did just find out her husband refers to himself as ‘first dude’ of Alaska, which I think is pretty cool)
September 11th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Thank you Sarah. It’s about time we had a leader who is not afraid to make tough decisions and who doesn’t avoid questions!
September 11th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Free4all,
How did you feel when you went to bed on Sept. 10th?
September 11th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Cara,
The full quote does make me feel better about her stance. Sorry I glossed over it so quickly the first time.
I am always a little wary when politics, religion, and war intersect (although I understand it’s part of the world we are living in).
September 11th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
I want to know why some of here sentences wasn’t completed. Seems like her answers kept being cut off humm!
September 11th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
I went to bed the same way on Sept. 10 as I do tonight. Ready to make as many phone calls and knock on as many doors as possible, and keep hope alive that the American people don’t want the country John McCain is promising us.
September 11th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Free4all,
You seem to have missed the point.
September 11th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Ad Rem,
Perhaps you’d like to explain it to me
September 11th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Sarah Palin = American Idol.
Heaven help us.
September 11th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Free4all,
Your answer did not reflect the timeframe I was alluding to, that of Sep. 10, ‘01. I trust you were not planing on campaigning against McCain or his policies on Sept. 11, ‘01?
September 11th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Ad Rem,
Totally off topic, but I’m curious… Where does ‘Ad Rem’ come from?
September 11th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Dear Alan
This interview reminded me of Hillary Clinton’s prediction “The October surprise.” Many people were wating Mrs. Obama’s tape. I remember 2004 it was “swift boat.” Nixon said he will “stoping the Vietnam War.” Republicans are not stupid.
Democratic party should had listen to a white woman. Hillary is in Politics for long time. As a young girl, she was “Goldwater girl.” That is why she understand the Republicans too.
September 11th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Um Cara,
It’a Latin, for “to the point”. ;-}
September 11th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Ad Rem,
Doh! And I live in ‘Latin America’ and everything, you’d think I would speak Latin! : )
Um Cara (Portuguese slang for: a dude)
September 11th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
I’m SICK of all the ‘god’ talk, when it comes to very important political and national security issues. Religious idols such as GOD DO NOT BELONG IN THE GOVERNMENT, POLITICAL TALK, OR DECISION MAKING! It is PEOPLE in the government who make the decisions, PEOPLE decide to wage war, PEOPLE kill other people, etc. It’s NOT God, or Buddha, or Allah, or Brahma, or Santa Claus, or the Tooth Fairy!
Someone who says that something was a task from GOD does not belong in the government and cannot be trusted. It’s scary…
September 11th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Lopa,
Not to worry!. I have a feeling that Hillary is a very active player right now. Biden didn’t make his latest comments for nothing. Could there be a switch in the mix? I think we would be seeing a very different dynamic in the works right now if Obama had picked Hillary in the first place.
September 11th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Dale: it’s not just making tough decisions but more like making the correct decisions.
September 11th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
During the run-up to his first presidential campaign, President Bush to Texas evangelist James Robinson, “I feel like God wants me to run for presidnet. I can’t explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me. Something is going to happen. I know it won’t be easy for me or my family, but God want me to do it.” (’The Faith of Gorge W. Bush, Stephen Mansfield, Tarcher, NY 2003. ‘Observer’, November 2, 2003).
Maybe if Bush wasn’t so sure our soldiers would go to heaven, he’d be less inclined to send them off to die.
September 11th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Ad Rem: what are you trying to say with your question to Free4All?
September 11th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Rick,
Faith and religion have ALWAYS been part of politics. The Founding Fathers spoke of faith, FDR spoke of God in his speeches, as did Lincoln, Reagan, JFK, and many others. What are you so afraid of?
As far as the “Bush Doctrine” question, she knew Gibson was setting a trap in that question. She did an excellent job. Boy, I wish someone, anyone, would ask Obama such questions without “starstruck” eyes.
September 11th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
free4all Does it bother you to wake up every morning knowing there is a war being waged on GOD and He is being replaced by science.
September 11th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Libru,
Why do you feel God and science cannot coexist? And what do you mean by Him being replaced by science?
September 11th, 2008 at 11:59 pm
Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, Charlie!!!
How many times did Palin repeat Gibson’s name throughout the interview?
I hate talking to people who constantly repeat your name back to you like they think you’ve forgotten it or something. I always suspected they were Dale Carnegie graduates, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”.
It’s a cheap trick and it means about as much as repeating “my friends” does.
Palin is closer to “Dan Quayle” than I had feared.
September 12th, 2008 at 12:17 am
If you remove the lipstick from a pig, you are left with a pig. If you remove the lipstick from Sarah, you are left with ….. nothing.
September 12th, 2008 at 12:19 am
Who’s the president of Uzbekistan, Gov Palin? Three seconds, times up, you lose! Give me a break. She’s a hell of a lot sharper than her interviewer or the dem’s nominee. You’re just digging the hole deeper - but please, keep digging!
September 12th, 2008 at 12:37 am
whats up anoynouse
September 12th, 2008 at 2:04 am
Libru, I can’t speak fort free4all, but rather than bothering me, it makes me extremely happy to know that a war is being waged against superstition and irrationality (GOD) and being replaced by rationality and science.
It is the 21st century after all.
CAAmerican, I’m sorry but I’d like a leader who is exceptional rather than average. I’m sure Sarah is a brilliant hockey mom, but that’s a very different skill set to dealing with global politics. She sounded like a girl taking a test, who’d remembered all her answers parrot fashion.
I bet her handlers where sweating as the cameras rolled.
September 12th, 2008 at 3:08 am
“Who’s the president of Uzbekistan, Gov Palin? Three seconds, times up, you lose! Give me a break. She’s a hell of a lot sharper than her interviewer or the dem’s nominee. You’re just digging the hole deeper - but please, keep digging!”
Robert mule,
I think every presidential candidate wouldnt be able to answer that not even you!
September 12th, 2008 at 3:26 am
Well, this explains why she thought the Bush Doctrine was his World View.
“Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!”
Adams is rolling in his grave.
September 12th, 2008 at 3:34 am
Alan Colmes did the same thing ABC did.. which was to remove the first few words of the prayer to make it seem like Palin was making a declaration that she knows we’re doing God’s will.
i sent serveral messages asking for correction Allen allowed his lie to remain… thereby provoking people to view her with contempt.
These are the low and dirty tactics of the Left. To um cara’s credit, s/he was about the only person to acknoweldge the smear campaign by Alan.
September 12th, 2008 at 4:47 am
Sarah gets a grade A in saying Charlie a lot. She really has got an impressive grasp of first names.
September 12th, 2008 at 7:06 am
I don’t think Charlie Gibson (even in his smugness and with the answers in front of him) knew what the Bush Doctrine was. I didn’t think it was pre-emptive strikes in 2002. I thought the Doctrine was articulated the evening of 9/11 when Bush spoke to the country- We will not differentiate between the terrorists and those that harbor them. In other words, terrorism is no longer a criminal act, but an act of war and the US would attack not only the terrorists, but the nation states that harbor or assist them. Lastly, “victory” doesn’t mean leaving. We defeated Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan, nobody would disagree with that- but we still have troops in both countries 60 years later.
September 12th, 2008 at 9:56 am
Hey Clayton,
Don’t you think it’s irrelevant whether Charlie did or didn’t know it? Or whether you or I know it. The fact is she’s obviously didn’t. And it’s hardly surprising considering she’s only been studying foreign policy for two weeks. It like being told you’ve gonna be a doctor and cramming for a medical exam. You just aren’t going to pass, if you have absolutely no prior knowledge.
As for victory inverted commas. I agree it’s a fluid set of criteria and with the help of our allies we did defeat Germany and Japan, but our troops are still there because those countries want them there. Not because those countries are a mess.
The thought of our brave men and woman being killed and maimed for the next 60 years sends shivers down my spine.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:36 am
No one said anything about military personnel being killed and maimed for 60 years. But, we’re in a fight with radical Islamic terrorists and if that takes from now til doomsday we’re going to have people killed in the fight, whether in Iraq or not. I personally think the purpose of the Iraq war is to set a permanent base of operations there in the form of the new embassy/fortress to have a presence in the region, not just Iraq. I think the overthrow of Saddam was also to make an example of him to other regimes in the region. We did it to Saddam, we can do it to you.

Great points to the fact’s,J Clayton.I agree and I would like to add, that even though our troops in Saudi Arabia, are considered an insult and desecration to Holy Land of Islam,if the extremist was allowed remove the heads of state in Arabia and Pakistan all Hell would break loose…OIL and Nuclear Weapons OMG,I Hope that for the Love of this country, I hope history does redeem G.W Bush, but the coruption stinks to high heaven.BTW the mortgage crisis was writing on wall before he took office, there is plenty of blame to go around from real estate agent to the home owners.
September 12th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
I absolutely agree with you Clayton, I think the one of the reasons we went to Iraq was to establish a permanent presence in a country with the third biggest oil reserves in the world. But of course that wasn’t what we were told because invading a sovereign country for it’s natural resources is never a very popular with the families of the soldiers who die or the public who pay with tax dollar.
Ironically, one of the main thing that drove Bin Laden to create Al-Qaeda was the establishment of permanent American bases in Saudi Arabia. Which sort of begs the questions, why do we insist on continuing with a policy that has caused such grief?
As for proving we can do it to Saddam we can do it to you. The outcome has been almost the exact opposite. As a result of this misguided adventure, our standing with our allies has fallen to it’s lowest ebb in a generation, Iran is far stronger as a result of us destroying it’s regional rival, Russia invades our allies with impunity, North Korea is currently building a second missile launch site and any influence we once had in South America, our apparent backyard, is so limited that our ambassadors are expelled without opposition.
In under every possible measure of foreign policy success, invading Iraq has been a disaster which continues to cost the lives of our brave men and woman and 600 billion dollars or more than 1700 dollars for every man, woman and child in the country.
For the sake of my children, I don’t want more of the same.
September 12th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Palin looked like a serious canidate and Gibson looked like a has been news anchor. Charlie Gibson = Dan Rather.
September 12th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
Palin was an embarrassment to women. Now all women candidates will be perceived as lacking the knowledge for the job. Too bad but she needs to drop out and learn several “things” before running for higher office.
The problem becomes worse when you think about McCain’s age and his health and realize that she is a heartbeat away from the presidency.
Hillary supporters: think it over before you’re swept away by this candidacy…the damage could last throughout our lifetimes!
September 12th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
Palin was totally unprepared for this higher office.
I don’t care if she looks like an ordinary person. I want my VP and my president to be the best and the brightest not some hockey mom with great ambition. Go home and make sure the streets are plowed and learn a few things before you do this again.
September 12th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
She is not just some “hockey mom” with great ambition. She was a mayor and now governs a state. As governor she actually GOVERNS (and doesn’t just vote PRESENT most of the time as Obama has). She is in charge of the National Guard for that state(among many other things) I think that means she has more executive experience as VP than the #1 guy on the other ticket?
Talk about being totally unprepared. Obama wants to RAISE taxes on businesses and anyone making 250,000 and over. Of course most people are gullable to think that this will “help” the middle class. It will if you don’t buy ANYTHING. You see, businesses are going to be taxed higher, so they will raise their prices. MANY small businesses fall into that income bracket which means MANY of them will have to lay-off employees or shut their doors. You can’t raise taxes, redistribute income and hope that fixes the economy. That is called SOCIALISM, and it is a broken system.
September 12th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Palin’s def got what it takes to become VP and maybe even President one day. Has anyone seen this video yet? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjtCI8CHen8
September 12th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
ONLY 16 PRESIDENTS HAVE BEEN GOVERNOR.
And as for being so brave about answering those questions, didn’t she have, like, the last TWO WEEKS to prepare for her first interview as VP candidate?
Anonymouse, loved your post.
“Charlie, Cha-, Ch-, Charl–, Charlie, Charlie….”
September 12th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
How many Presidents have been community organizers?
September 12th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
Dear Alan
Give her a break. Her first born chld went to war. Who will protect him? I think it is God. Every Dmocrats are jumping to crticize her. Think—if your first born child went to war. I give her lot of credit for attending the stupid interview and answering stupid question. Bush’s doctorin? May be Charlie shoud ask her the capital of Pakisthan or Capital of Yamen. Charlie did not ask her hard question, but stupid question. Am I sarcastic? Yes!
September 12th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Alan hates Christians… period.
i.ve never seen a woman so mistreated by those who claim to be against misogy.
But lets remember the 1990s and Clinton was harassing one woman after another. none of these leftists gave a crap about any of them
What comes first is Leftist politics
September 12th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
This is a joke Mrs. Palin is a farce!!! Can nobody see that,She is so inexperienced in international, affairs.Soccer Mom yes Vice Pres. NNNNOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
September 13th, 2008 at 1:51 am
And there’s Obama, the wanna be communist hanging out at the university … coasting on the low expecatiaons of affirmitive action
September 13th, 2008 at 2:14 am
Three questions for BHO
1) Can you provide one problem you confronted beyond your self interest?
2) What action did you take to confront the problem?
3) What are the results of your action?
Obama’s answer to number 1: 0, None, Na-da
September 13th, 2008 at 11:34 am
Governor Palin replied that she “didn’t blink” when asked to be the Vice Presidential Candidate. Mr. Gibson, you should have blinked and squirmed in embarrassment. Your allegedly unbiased interview with the lady was, in fact, a shameful, hypocritical interrogation of a respected public official. I have tried to view you as a professional media pesonage…that view has become skewed as your pervasive bent to the left colors your comments and invalidates your presentation.
September 14th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
T Mason: “How many Presidents have been community organizers?”
I wish to god all of them were. Probably most have been at one time or another.
Most of the Founding Fathers were, I daresay. But here’s another statistic for you:
15 PRESIDENTS HAVE BEEN SENATORS!
September 15th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
“Your allegedly unbiased interview with the lady was, in fact, a shameful, hypocritical interrogation of a respected public official.”
Oh, the humanity!
Civility is a right. Respect is earned. Palin hasn’t earned it yet.
Probably because she hid out for 2 weeks, trying to figure out what a VP does.
September 15th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
