The Winking: Voluntary Or Involuntary?

October 3rd, 2008, 2:53 PM EDT

Jed asks if it’s an effort to woo America.

But Zeno says it wasn’t on purpose.

I realized after watching video of the debate and looking at early photos of Palin, that she’s cross eyed. I’m being serious no joke she’s cross eyed and the winking was a result of her self correcting her left eye. She held it strait through most of the debate somehow but winked as it tried to return to its usual position.

Responses to this post...

  1. It’s easy to tell who has been picked up by women before.

Those that have know the difference between winking and being wooed.

  3. I was wondering if anyone else noticed all the winking. Palin’s winking was as irritating as Biden’s shark smile.

  4. Crude explanation, but easily explained. It’s to keep the BS from leaking out her eyesockets. Why do you think she wears bangs? Her eyebrows stink, that’s why.

She’s just that full of it.

    :)

  5. As a democrat I appreciate everything you do to try to keep the show as balanced as Fox News will let it be, even with the guests shouting at you and getting angry when you’re trying to make a point. I agree with you that Biden won the debate hands down. Republicans will try to make a case for her winning, just because she didn’t fall flat on her face. If I was a McCain supporter, that view would trouble me even more. If you try to base a win on someone exceeding expectations so low you could kick them in the face, thats a problem.

Palin spent more time talking about herself and loading up on memorized talking points than she did trying to explain and defend the positions of McCain. That would be fine if SHE were running for President, but the debate objective of a VP is to explain, defend, and get out the message of your running mate. I think people are starting to notice that the Rebuplican party has much more love for Palin than they do for McCain. The problem is, McCain is running against Obama in the election, not Palin.
Not to downplay the importance of the VP, but people vote for President. It looks like the Rebuplicans are hoping people just vote for Palin.
Both McCain and Palin just recite the same memorized information over and over, while Obama and Biden seem to evaluate and evolve the information that is the most important to the American people.

Thats what America needs. Not stubborn people, set in their ways, defending failed policies and poor judgement.
I also noticed that Sean kept pushing the whole “U.S troops killing civilians” issue. Although its not something thats popular, or people want to hear, it is a FACT that U.S troops have killed 100’s of civilians acting on bad intelligence. Its not the fault of the troops, but the fault of the commanders for acting on bad intelligence. There are tons of reports from media here in the U.S and from around the world that prove that to be fact.
Sorry this comment is so long, I just think I share you’re passion for letting people know the truth about important issues. Once again, i’m a big fan, so keep fighting the good fight against those angry Rebuplicans on your show!

  6. By golly she was winkin’ to Jesus, you betcha…

  7. Some women must have the need to constantly criticize other women to fulfill/diminish the insignificance they themselves are dealing with.

  8. The winking was patronizing, unprofessional and weird for a VP candidate. I do not believe it was to recenter her cross-eyed tendencies, as she did it in an attempt to be cute and for emphasis (Take a look at the video again).

Perhaps it was because she is semi-permanently snow blind from her moose and other wildlife killing spree’s.

Again, PLEASE, Mrs. Palin, return to the frozen artic from which you came…..and since you are going to behave like truck stop waitress (No offense to waitresses), I’d like my check please…….

A little threatened by a strong willed, educated, executive woman who is running a state?

    : D

  14. ; )

  15. Not really. I don’t constantly talk about other women’s looks, dialect, family to make myself feel better/smarter/superior. You and a few others on this board have the market on that.

That is what some dems have sunk to.

  16. Has anyone noticed that wire she has on her right shoulder? She probably had a tiny ear-piece on her right ear and someone was probably giving her out some “issue notes”.
If that’s the case, SHE IS SO B-U-S-T-E-D!!!

  21. Growing up as a girl, I noticed girls could be the most cruel to another girl they were jealous of. And it was always in groups so as to make themselves feel justified in the disgusting remarks.

Sadly, this blog is no different; just older and NOT wiser women.

  22. You’re darn right that wire didn’t do her any good.

And I betcha Bristol was the one giving her the “tips”. lol

  23. Peggy,

You hit the nail on the head.

    Ashley,

    Grow up.

  24. Phillip D., I do agree on that. I am thinking that for the only 5 months that she has been “doing” this, she lacks indefinite substance on every issue. I just don’t see how some Americans get swayed into buying whatever she says….I just don’t get it.
And I don’t want to appear to other countries the joke that we’ve been for the last 8 years. It’s time we saved this country.

  25. Growing up I noticed that I always get wet when it rains…..what’s your point? That ALL women on the blog are jealous (God Forbid!) of Sara Palin? Ah, the simplistic right wing mind.

Perhaps the girl your friends were envious of, actually had something to be jealous about. Mrs. Palin does not. Maybe some of the women on this board feel she is unqualified as well as being a little light in the brain department…you assume too much.

VP Sarah…I love it. You libs are gonna go bonkers when she’s VP, and it’s gonna be fun! Palin Derangement Syndrome. I mean, she’s like an attractive female George W. Bush, even down to the NUCULAR talk!

  27. Ashley,
You absolutely hit that nail on the head.

We don’t need two more Bushes riding the White House. Palin is going through her crash course right now and what is even sadder is that Bush is still on the politics crash course! If you sway McCain, it will all be the same.

  28. “A little threatened by a strong willed, educated, executive woman who is running a state?”

  29. Wouldn’t “lacking indefinite substance” mean you have substance, Ashley?

So Obama has substance? How? What experience? Campaigning for 5 years? That’s a huge load.

  30. They had asked Palin what magazine she reads or what else she is reading at the moment and the woman even fumbled at that. She couldn’t even answer that appropriately.
    You betcha she don’t read!

  31. Rocky,

she has a college degree, she isn’t brittle. a lot of men on this board would have crumbled under the scrutiny/comments that have been made about and toward her.

  32. Oh, sorry to offend your delicate sensibilities.

Let’s keep making fun of Hillary’s pantsuits, chocolate chip cookies, best friends, hairstyles, Tammy Wynette, etc. etc. etc.

Is that more soothing for all you “older, wiser, more mature, sympathetic and respectful” GOP nannies? Will that still the wagging fingers in your lacy white, parasol-holding, kid gloves?

Ahhh. Hillary bashing. Whew. That’s better.

  33. Oh we all knew the woman doesn’t even pick up a book. She is exactly like Bush. She needs the newspaper to tell her what is going on.
All she does is moose hunt instead of educating her daughters on birth control.

  35. Oh jason, you have a point there. She says she is for abstinence but whoever practices that anymore?
Feminism has got to go out the door for now. Her conservative views are only going to bring women back to the 1800’s.

  36. Yes, Ashley it does seem as if America has lost all sense of embarrassment when it comes to putting up unqualified boobs for elections.

But since Mrs. Palin didn’t even get a passport until last year, I am sure that her lack of curiosity about, and disdain for other countries will be a hit amongst the right wing loonies.

Funny how the right wing business tycoons and politicians talk constantly about globalization, yet chooses a candidate that hasn’t ventured much further than her own back yard. Bush was the same before he became president and we know how that worked out. NOT!

Maybe Mrs Palin can revel us with another story of Russians flying over Alaska….and of course her BIG experience in international affairs with Canada. I mean that is a TOTALLY different culture than here in the U.S. Please, send Mrs. Palin back to Alaska before I am forced to lie about my country of birth.

  45. PHILLIP D.: My point is, we can agree to disagree with someone, but all the catty remarks are just that — catty remarks made to make themselves feel better about themselves — not helpful or constructive.

ASHLEY: I’m sorry you are more concerned about how “the rest of the world” sees us than what is best for our country. I am making my vote not on what is best right now for me, but also for our future generations. PLEASE make decisions based on facts, not just emotions. And I don’t mean looking up facts in just one place. Research both sides of the aisle.

  46. Oh no, I was concerned at first and still am. But it has gotten so bad that now I think everyone else sees us maybe as, handicapped? France told us not to go into the war, and so did others. And what did we do? We pretended like we didn’t need anybody else’s advice because we are the best. And now look at the trouble we’re in.

  47. I concur with that Ashley…shame on us. Now we have to look for a way to save this country, not bash it even more.

  53. I must say that Katie Couric has redeemed herself. She asked the follow up questions that everyone else in the media seems to be afraid to do with Ms. Palin’s obtuse responses. Ms. Ifill, and all others should speak on the record when it is obvious that Palin is refusing to answer the questions asked.

  54. “…when did Katy Couric become Ms. Hardball reporter.”

    SNAP! Right on target.

“I am making my vote not on what is best right now for me, but also for our future generations.”

Peggy, I don’t have any kids, so I really don’t have to give a damn about future generations…but I do, oddly enough.

You’re voting for a party that wants to liberally expend your children’s future oil reserves here in this country, instead of conserving them for future generations.

You’re voting for a party that doesn’t give a damn whether future generations live or die in a war or without health care, they only care whether fetuses live or die.

You’re voting for a party that would remove all gun restrictions without question (which is precisely why my husband and I are driving to a shooting range next weekend, so we can make our own purchase…just in case we need to protect ourselves from the gun nuts, ironically enough).

You’re voting for a party that wanted to privatize Social Security (thank god that didn’t happen), sealing its death for future generations.

You’re voting for a party that has wrecked the economy, lost the admiration of the world (you realize it’s a global economy, right? And will be more so for your children’s children….), and handled the current war extremely incompetently in the crucial first four years.

You’re voting for a party that’s rejected global warming, Kyoto Treaty (my own Republican U.S. rep has blamed cow farts, incidentally), and preserving ecological domains that former Republican administrations began! FEMA was paralyzed, the FDA is in shambles, and deregulation has severely crippled a lot of the industries it was meant to grow.

At this juncture, when so many Republican religious right-wingers are even talking about End Times, I just can’t see how the GOP is even THINKING about future generations.

  55. Q. What is the product of 1+1 Ms. Palin?

Actually, that does sound like a “gotcha” question to me.

  56. Sara, little frustrated are we? Sounds like you are worried that people are actually seeing you liberals for what you really are. Pathetic. You libs cannot never admit when you are wrong or screw up. McCain has, Palin held nothing back on pointing out Bush’s blunders. People like you, Barney Frank, Obama and Biden are pathological liars. And you are worried that people are seeing that.
As for global warming. You liberals would help out a lot if you kept your sewer holes shut and stop spewing all your pollution.

  57. DEAR SARAH: You obviously have alot of anger and hate, so no answer I respond to (other than I agree with you) would suffice. So I won’t bother you with why I believe you are pretty much dead wrong on all you ranting points. Except for the last one — yes I am a believer and I do make most of my decisions based on my beliefs. But I do not have an End Times belief, which is why I am concerned about the future generations. Even if I did, that would not be an excuse not to.

I’m sorry if you believe government can do best, more than ourselves, in just about every area, other than national defense. I really believe we would be much better without federal govenment involved in anything. Starting the IRS, welfare, social security, etc. It crushes ingenuity, creativity and more. When we don’t take responsibility for our actions and work for what we want, self-esteem and self-worth is depleted. I have no problem with helping the helpless, we should. That’s what charities and non-governmental agencies are for.

If Obama wins, I truly hope that I am wrong about him. Because if not, America is truly gone as was intended by the founding fathers. This will be a very dark place.

  58. Aw, Mark. Give up the personal attacks and try to stick to the issues, eh?

“*splutter splutter* Yeh, but! Yer a liar liar pants on fire!”

Thanks for bringing my case home. You haven’t a leg to stand on.

  59. Sarah Palin did herself proud last night. She reminded us, sadly in a way, how the bottom of the GOP ticket is stronger in every possible way than the top.

  77. Peggy, I know you probably wish I had a lot of anger and hate, and while I hate (!) to disappoint you… I have a pretty good life, lots of friends, make a decent wage in a fairly secure job, and I’m not pulling out of the stock market.

I just enjoy hashing out ideas, beliefs, etc.

A few items resonate from your post:

“I’m sorry if you believe government can do best, more than ourselves, in just about every area, other than national defense.”

I’m sorry if you believe our American government is such a bad one. I generally tend to think it does a good job. And the reason gov’t is so big, is because it’s been necessary, unfortunately. Charities and non-governmental agencies weren’t filling the bill. Even now, Bush has grown the Office of Faith Based Operations, funneling our tax money to churches. Do these churches pay taxes, by the way? No. Do they seem to invest more in gymnasiums and jumbotrons rather than the destitute, elderly and sickly? Seems so, to me.

Anyway, the gov’t is large because it’s more expedient and efficient, despite our grousing, to pool our states’ resources for one FDA, CDC, FEMA, etc.

The system worked through the 1900s, is still working despite our negative attitudes (I swear we live in the Age of Rage), but for some reason, we’re seeking to dismantle it. I’d agree, we don’t necessarily need to add on, but I don’t know that we need to cut as much as people are saying.

“When we don’t take responsibility for our actions and work for what we want, self-esteem and self-worth is depleted.”

AGREED! IN SPADES! But you know what? This is another one of those, we-elect-who-we-are things for me. It starts in the cradle. Parents today don’t require their children to work for anything they get. And believe me, they’re not encouraging their children to take responsibility for their actions. Google “helicopter parent” and you might see what I mean. Perhaps it’s the best explanation for the credit crisis. And it started in the 1960s, with the incredible, and incredibly-well-intentioned Greatest Generation.

“If Obama wins, I truly hope that I am wrong about him. Because if not, America is truly gone as was intended by the founding fathers. This will be a very dark place.”

I feel the same way about McCain (unless he stops talking like a Neocon and reverts to his more moderate stance). But I also think America still exists according to the Founding Fathers’ ideals. The landscape has had to change and adapt over the last 200 years, though.

One thing maybe you and I can agree on (I think we already agree about personal responsibility and accountability):

The next four years would be daunting for anyone to take on. I’m not sure we can expect one human being to clean up the mess we’re in right now.

But the important thing is to have hope, and do what we can, in our own lives, to make America a better place.

  78. (cue National Anthem, fireworks backdrop and balloon drop…)

Sorry. I got carried away and thought I was Peggy Noonan for a moment.

  79. WOW … Our country is facing the worst crisis in decades and the hot issue in liberal land is: was she winking? is she crossed eyed? may-be it was just an eyelash? WHO THE HELL CARES?

Of course, Sarah being human has her shortcomings as we all do.

Yet, the simple fact remains that the most urgent issue facing our nation is national security. Becoming energy independent is the single biggest step we could take to insure our national security. Sarah understands and has done more to rein in big oil than anyone in the nation including those reading this.

Regarding Nobabma’s tax increase on small business and those making $250K plus keep in mind that businesses DO NOT pay taxes the consumers of their products and services pay the tax. Community Organizers DO NOT create jobs with living wages investors do.

And why does Nobama, who supposedly wants to lead the nation into the future, continue to look BACK to the 90s. Clinton’s administration rode the internet bubble. And when that bubble burst during the summer of 2000 so did Clinton’s economy. Yet while riding the highs of the economy Clinton completely ignored national security.

  80. Sarah:

I glad to hear that you think America is a good place; I agree totally. I believe it is the best country ever — not perfect but great.

I’m not sure if we agree on this topic, though. Agreed, Pres. Bush has made mistakes but he wasn’t alone. I feel he had the best intentions and had alot of “crises” thrown on him in the beginning. Unforutnately, too many hate mongers tried to keep him from working. Both parties have made this mess and both will have to work to correct it. I just get tired of all the hate speech when someone has a different opinion.

The thing I guess concerns me the most about Obama is I don’t think he has much courage and he is way, way indebted to the extreme left. If elected, he will not be able to say no, and I don’t believe the founding fathers had any intentions of the country becoming another Netherlands.

Yes, we are a large nation; many nationalities which is great. But we have to be united; that is not the wishes of the extreme left. When I say extreme left, I mean those who listen and follow the talking points of MSNBC, Huffington Post, Michael Moore, Daily Kos, etc.

Yes, I agree the next four years will be a daunting one for whomever is president. Neither one will be able to get everything done. Although, I don’t agree with Sen. McCain on alot of things, I do so more than Obama and I believe he has the best intentions for the country and has the courage.

By-the-way, I am very glad to hear you are not angry or hate-filled. And I have two very well-grounded, respectful sons who don’t expect that the world owes them anything.

  81. Bernie, my, my ,my. And when did moses come down from the mountain top and shout about Mrs. Palin’s supposed oil industry showdown? She tweaked revenue in a state that has less people than the two counties I live in.
Sorry if I don’t get on my knee’s and genuflect.

She is hardly the Marshall Luckey of the oil industry. Perhaps getting your information from sources other than Fox news would be in order.

Regarding energy security, I couldn’t agree more. We do need to be free of energy produced in unstable parts of the world. The problem is that industry and there appointed lap dogs, the Republicans, have tried everything they know how to prevent this from happening. Ronald Reagan dismantled virtually every alternative energy program on the books we he became president. Drilling for more oil is not an answer. We simply do not have the reserves. McCain’s contempt for alternative energy is apparent in his 20 plus votes against it.

And if you think Mrs. Palin scares the oil companies, I have a bridge to nowhere to sell you.

  83. Too bad, Peggy, that the nordic countries like Finland, Denmark and Sweden now have some of the best economies in the world. Finland is in the top 2 or three countries for business. Our founding father’ couldn’t anticipate a lot of things. Fortunately, some of us were given a mind that we can use to change course when the old one is steering us for the rocks.

  84. Nelly:

I don’t put in stock in polls; never know who or how many are polled.

I’m just curious, why do none of you critics of Palin say anything about all the “untruths” Biden quoted last night? Doesn’t it bother you at all that HE lies so easily and so often without hesitation? I mean, he has 35 years experience of “embellishing”. I will even concede that they all embellish to some degree. But really, he just makes things up if he doesn’t know the answer. Do any of you even try to find out about the truth? You say you want change–exactly what kind of change do you want?

  85. Phillip D.: I am sad that all you care about is money. If that is where you place your values, then there is no need for us to debate. Because none of those countries is not somewhere I would want to live.

  86. Have you visited any of them Peggy? I have, and they are GREAT places to live and have some of the best schools, hospitals anywhere. They actually VALUE their children, not just use them as political pawns. Their leaders actually respond to the people, unlike here. Money has nothing to do with it, common sense does. If they weren’t so difficult to emigrate to,(because of their high standard of living) I would have left years ago.

  87. Peggy, to tell you the truth, I think we have two strong candidates in Obama and McCain (at least, he was the best Republican candidate in the primary. I just wish Palin had more gravitas).

I agree we have to be united, but in order for that to happen, the extreme right will have to admit that Limbaugh, O’Reilly, Hannity, Coulter, Gingrich, etc., are doing just as much, if not more, to exploit differences between the parties and create just as much hate and divisiveness.

The truth is in the middle. The best is usually somewhere in the middle. Compromise, discussion, respect, etc.

I worry that McCain, instead of being the moderate he seemed to be, will turn Neocon and carry out another 4 more years akin to the Bush administration. Which has been bad. Bad for the country, and bad for the Rebublican Party.

I think things will get better, if we start working for our country, here in our own homes.

Encourage our kids to get a strong education by paying attention in class, respecting the teacher, eating well and getting enough exercise.

Working hard and living within our means. And paying taxes.

Looking out for our neighbors and lending a hand.

Subscribing to our local newspapers and listening to our local radio stations (and telling the advertisers when you see/hear their ads!) to keep up with local politics.

    Observing basic etiquette and respect.

Loving your spouse and honoring marriage vows. Or getting counseling, for chrissakes.

Not having more kids than can be afforded, in either time, attention, energy, or money. And being involved with kids’ lives, which doesn’t necessarily include shoving them out the minivan door to the next lesson or practice.

Going to church, but being respectful of others’ religions.

Reducing, reusing, recycling, car-pooling, picnicking, taking local vacations, etc.

There’s so much we want/don’t want our gov’t to do, but if we encouraged simplicity and just being positive, instead of negative, it would do a helluvalot more good.

Dig me, Little Mary Sunshine. Like I’m so sunny all the time. Ah well, just on this blog.

Pax, and have a good weekend.

  88. The next four years would be daunting for anyone to take on. I’m not sure we can expect one human being to clean up the mess we’re in right now.

you liberals want the USA to become a communist state and you act as if the president is a monarch who orders everything

When JFK was president you liberals even said it out loud, that the crooked worthless criminal John F Kennedy (& family) who didnt even win in 1960 was “the Royal family”

This is why liberals and normal Americans cannot agree on politics, you libs want a communist state so the govt makes all your lifes decisions for you while punishing anyone who is successful because it shows how lazy you types are.

We should bring back a form of slavery to America.

That would be where people can choose to become slaves, give up their rights and just be someone’s property with all their rent paid, food and basic insurance paid. Let people choose it instead of this phoney “disability” and “welfare” nonsense. just say look if you want to be a slave or a commune member? then here is a program for you.

this welfare/disability system has evolved into a lottery that rewards stupidity and laziness. Its another reason the US economy suffers.

liberals want to make all of America into a commune or communist Marxist state, literally. seriously. So its all about pushing THAT agenda instead of being American first, freedom front and center, freedom of religion, live free or die, etc; and having disagreements on smaller things.

no, the left pushes for America to be enslaved with communism and the ouster of Christianity so the left’s view of religion can be forced upon the nation. this is the direction of the left.

  89. “…she has a college degree…”

Yes dont forget that there IS a far right wing kook conservative conspiracy, they fought McCain and did their best to derail his nomination, even to lie cheat and steal.

I lost all respect for Rush Limbaugh when he repeatedly lied about John McCain’s position on immigration reform, tax cuts and ? I still appreciate Rush’s work when he comments on what democrats are doing, but Im no longer a Rush listener.

Sean Hannity has also been dishonest about McCain; and these 2 are moderately far right wing, lots of others have been far worse on the kook right wing, Ann Coulter is one, having a meltdown and losing copus mentus. They lied to listeners and told them to NOT vote in 2006 or to NOT vote GOP (republican) so that Nancy Pelosi could take over, ruin the nations economy and surrender in Irak.

Well in 2008 we do have an economic crisis because of democrats’ corruption, but I blame the far right conservatives. They refused to vote, they caused this economic crisis by willfully sinking the ship and letting democrats take over.

I am SO GLAD that John McCain won the GOP nomination! the far right wing fringe kook conservatives (kookservatives) can take their temper tantrums, lies and kook ideology and [edited for profanity]

Ive thought since 2006 that the GOP must move towards the center politically after the betrayal of conservatives in 2006 (not voting GOP) to reach out to independents and sensible democrats, thats the ONLY way a republican could win in 08. Thank God we have John McCain

  91. But Bradley your folks want to force feed christianity and religious nonsense down EVERYONE’s throat. No oneis telling you what you can and cannot believe. The United States is a democracy, not a theocracy. Keep your bible off the constitution.

Although I agree that our welfare system isn’t perfect, allowing mass starvation and consigning old people who are poor to the street isn’t a very palateble thought either. These social problems will not go away even if you took all social safety nets away. Then what? Build a castle and moat? Pour boiling lead on the starving masses? You have to have a solution. Just leaving up in the air what to do with the disabled, the unfortunate isn’t an answer. Of course, since the religious loonies want to bring as many unwanted children in the world, but make no provision for them, I can only assume you don’t care about them either. Religion has created more human misey than anything short of disease on this planet. But I could care less if someone wants to delude themselves as long as they don’t force me to join in.
Further, as a self-proclaimed christian, have you never heard you are your brothers keeper. Perhaps you missed that little passage…

The right wingers believes in PLENTY of government socialism, but for business, banks, oil companies and the like. But dear god, if it helps people, well then thats Godless communism. Right.

We are already slaves to corporate America. I mean, when did your congressman ever move so fast to give YOU any time and attention?

Authentic Christianity cannot be forced upon anyone. Yes there are kooks in the religious world who do use religion for power and wealth. Real Christianity is saying to you hey! Christ is the Savior, if you want to hear then this is how you can be saved.

There have been uprisings and movements not only in America but Europe and worldwide to attack and sequester Christianity. they have consistent patterns and they exist in America right now.

Saying people starving need some kind of help? This is what helps the spread of communism. (no sarcasm) it says well why dont you care about them? here is how you can help.

Yes there should be some kind of help for those in genuine need. but its out of control. and Christian groups help

Yeah it does seem as if the other countries are aware from what is actually right from wrong. Instead we are here jampacked with joe-6-packs and all types of other misinformed people making it hard to make the best and right choice for the rest of us.

  95. Sarah Palin is a beautiful person inside and out. What the liberal media has tried to do to her is shameless. I also do not think the media was fair to Hillary. Obama always gets a free pass with the media. He may win, but it will be a tainted win if it happens because it was all hype by the main stream media. Put some honesty in this. Do any of you think ABC, CBS, NBC are completely fair on their coverage? Are they just in the tank for Obama? Is that okay with you as well? Do you have honor? Maybe Obama just needs a pillow. It sounds like the law is getting closer to indicting him. I heard Tony Rezko is singing like a canary. HMmmm.
Another Day… Another Close Friend of Obama Has Home Raided By FBI

    Ho-Hum. Here’s Friday’s “Friends of Obama” home raid story…
Obama’s Illinois buddy and former state senator gets a visit from the
    FBI.

Barack and buddy Larry Walsh. (WaTimes)
    The Washington Times reported:

The FBI on Wednesday raided the county offices of a former
Illinois state senator who is a poker-playing buddy of Democratic
    presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama.

According to Chicago authorities, the FBI visited the offices in
Joliet, Ill., of Will County executive Larry Walsh, a longtime friend
of Mr. Obama’s, and his chief of staff Matt Ryan.

Mr. Walsh, who served in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2005,
was endorsed by Mr. Obama in his county executive election bid. With
the support of some of Mr. Obama’s U.S. Senate volunteers, he easily
    defeated incumbent Republican Joseph Mikan.

Will County auditor Steve Weber confirmed that his office had
been asked by the FBI to assist in an investigation, but he did not
    elaborate on the specifics.

    Maybe the reports were right.
Maybe Obama buddy Rezko is singing like a canary.

More… Jennifer Rubin notes that Obama earmarked millions for Walsh’s
    county.

  99. James: She can shine my chrome dome anytime! It needs sum buffin’

what is a chrome dome? is that something they have in Alaska?

  100. I didn’t realize that you had to graduate from an Ivy League college to be considered “worthy” of public service. I guess that cuts out about half of middle America.

Oh well, so much for this country being the true land of opportunity. So much for someone wanting to serve their country because they actually want to make a positive difference.

She isn’t “using” her kids for political gain anymore than Obama used his (whoever claimed that is wrong).

  101. Vinnie Pee is wise and All-Knowing…

  102. I stumbled across this blog by accident and was astounded at the venom of the left. I am a registered independent because I learned years ago how stupid it is to tie myself to one party. I will no longer vote for a party, but for an individual who represents what I believe. The Democrats and Republicans have torn this country apart. When this country was founded, there was no intention to have a party system. They battle over government like the Cripps and Bloods battle over turf. It’s childish, un-patriotic, and during a time of war, it’s treason! If you think McCain is going to change Washington, you are sadly mistaken. He’s been there over twenty years and hasn’t done it yet. If you think Obama is going to change Washington, you better hope like hell he doesn’t, because it is only going to get worse if he does. In his home town of Chicago, they have one of the highest sales tax rates and murder rates in the country. There have been more Americans killed in Chicago this year so far than in Iraq. That isn’t the kind of change I’m looking for. Any person who has ever served in the military knows that the best way to conquer a population is to keep it divided and in fear. Look at us now. Look at Iraq! Do you think it is by coincidence that the Sunnis and Shiites were allowed to kill one another? Come on, surely we aren’t that naive. Our government is doing the same thing to us.
I think we all agree that we want lower taxes. Every politician you ask wants lower taxes too. Yet we don’t have lower taxes. Hmmm! Every politician says that they want a balanced government budget and controlled spending. Yet, we don’t have either. Obama and Biden say it’s the current administration’s fault that the economy is in the shape it’s in. The president doesn’t make the budget, Congress does. The President doesn’t make the laws that provide oversight of economic issues, the House does. Who is controlling Congress? The Democrats! You know, the guys who just turned a $700B bail out into $850B pork laced bail out just so they wouldn’t be the only party signing off on a bill that no one is sure will work. Talk about misery loving company. They had to add that pork to sucker enough Republicans to buy into a stupid theory devised by GW Bush and his crony Alan Paulson. They were pushed into it by fear, something the Bush administration is great at. The Democrats are also the same folks that want to create a government controlled health care system. You know the program that Hillary said she would propose a law requiring every citizen to have health insurance or face penalties or wage garnishments. Hmm! So now, we are going to turn poor people into criminals because their biggest concern is putting food on the table for their families, or buying gas to get to work. Yea, that’s going to help them out whether they like it or not. Have any of you ever visited your local Social Security office? You better get there early in the morning if you expect to talk to someone by the end of the day. What do you think a government run health care system is going to be? You better hope whatever is making you sick doesn’t kill you before your turn comes. The Democrats have ideas that are great in principal but terrible in execution. Sure we should have programs to help our sick and our poor. But most of the time the programs are abused by the freeloaders and the fakers. Talk about lack of oversight.
We may as well set a large stone sign at the feet of the Statue of Liberty that says “Welcome to the United Socialist States of America”. Sweden, Norway and Finland have government provided health care. Check out their tax rates before you buy into government health care.
By the way, get off your high horses about Sarah Palin. If the Democrats were really interested in helping people, they would have given the money they spent sending thirty investigators to Alaska searching for dirt on Palin, to charity. But then again, that wouldn’t have given Katie Couric or Charlie Gibson anything to report on. How many of you could name another landmark Supreme Court ruling other than Roe vs. Wade? I couldn’t, I learned (and forgot) that stuff thirty years ago. I’m sure Biden and Obama could because they are lawyers and are tested over that crap. But then again nobody hit them with Jeopardy style questions about the Energy Industry which is Palin’s specialty. I would think in this time of high energy costs, she would be the perfect candidate. I just don’t like her running mate.
The thought of two lawyers occupying the two most powerful positions in this country, scare the crap out of me. The lawyers in Congress are the root of all our problems. All education…no common sense.

  103. For those of you doubting my claims on the Chicago sales tax it’s 10.25% as stated in the Illinois state website.

    http://www.revenue.state.il.us/publications/Sales/strrm/07012008/ST-25.pdf

Scroll down to Chicago if you want to see for yourself.

If you want clarification on the murders in Chicago it stands at 598 so far this year in contrast to 270 thus far in Iraq.

  104. Well practiced manipulative technique, Alan, to make connection, Alan, with the audiance, Alan, like other techniques, Alan, that she has attempted to use, Alan, before in her interviews, Alan.
It is cheezy, cheap, and not something that doesn’t work.

  105. A Wyatt, many of your points have merit, but I take exception to a few. For one thing, it’s clear that you’re lean right, instead of down the middle. Whatever, though. I consider myself independent, too, but I happen to be leaning left these days, for many of the reasons listed below:

    1) Spending money digging up dirt on Palin? Wow. What do you consider the 6+ years of Ken Starr? And that was our tax money, mind you.

    2) Universal healthcare? Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it. In my experience, it was efficient, clear, expedited and professional– and obscenely inexpensive compared to our so-called “system.” But then, I’m a little bitter since I had to spend 10 minutes at the Wal-Mart pharmacy counter recently to REGISTER to buy what used to be an OTC drug. And you can slam the American gov’t all you want– veterans have died for your right — but frankly, thousands of seniors are able to obtain, and they depend on, the same Social Security system you deride. Our local office operates with excellence. Service is swift, friendly and competent. I’m sorry the one you dealt with was inferior to your standards.

    3) Believe me, Illinois gets what it pays for with that higher tax rate. Their education is better, their roads are better, their services are better. I come from a neighboring state with extremely low taxes, and there’s no comparison. My state is run by good ol’ boys who fail to realize you have to spend money to make money, and Illinois has reinvested public monies so that it’s got a stronger foundation than many of its surrounding states.

    4) More people murdered in Chicago than in Iraq? Sounds like the NRA is doing its job, making guns free and accessible to everyone.

    5) Palin has about the same qualifications and gravitas as Quayle, only McCain doesn’t appear to have the same health and vigor as GHW Bush. (And yes, T Mason, an Ivy League education IS generally superior to State U. As a State U. graduate, even I recognize that, for chrissakes. And it’s not even like she graduated from one of the country’s top J schools, either.)

    6) Finally, it’s not as if the Democrats are controlling Congress. You have to have a larger majority for that, which is why the Republicans have broken filibuster records for the past year.

    BUT– I agree,

Your Crips & Bloods observation is awesome. It’s ridiculous that more common ground can’t be found, such as your other observation that…

Many of the health services we offer to the disadvantaged are abused by fakers or lazy-butts. In my locality, I’d like to be able to narc on disability abusers like the ones who perform all kinds of odd jobs for cash like chopping wood, carpentry, etc., but they collect their disability checks for trumped-up back problems. It’s ridiculous how they get away with bilking the programs the way they do.

I also think doctors who abuse Medicare and Medicaid should be thrown in jail, or else be forced to pay restitution by providing pro bono health care for the disadvantaged.

HIllary’s idea of punishing people for not having healthcare was stupid. About as intelligent as taxing health benefits, which is what McCain wants to do.

Until these yahoos in Congress have their OWN universal, taxpayer-supported healthcare yanked, they aren’t going to have the faintest inkling of what reality is when it comes to American healthcare.

If it’s good enough for them, it should be good enough for us. And who knows? Maybe with more people paying in, the vets wouldn’t have to rely on the substandard treatment they get at VA hospitals.

Oh sure, perhaps doctors won’t be able to afford that third house in Aspen. And hospitals won’t be able to redecorate their interiors with sumptuous empty, unusable spaces and lobbies like they currently do. Maybe the catered lobster dinners that the pharmaceutical companies lavish on them will have to disappear. And maybe I won’t have to listen to drug salesmen talking about their boats while I wait another 90 minutes to see my doctor.

But if universal healthcare works for the other developed, non-socialist countries of the world, it’s worth looking into.

  106. Sweet Jesus. If Medicare and Medicaid, Wall Street, Fannie and Freddie are broken why in the world would you think the government should be in charge of healthcare.

Round and round we go on the obamaland merry-go-round, next stop free shots, free docs, low quality healthcare after waiting your turn for everyone.

The best part of having an Ivy League education is you have more BS to go with it, and if you get your MS you are a grand master of s***.

First you say she doesn’t have enough executive experience, she obviously isn’t a good mother because her daughter is going through what thousands of other good families are going through, you bring up that she has a baby with down syndrome so she obviously shouldn’t be VP, you don’t like her bangs, you don’t like how she talks, how she dresses or winks or blows kisses, you don’t like the fact that she hunts or carries a weapon, now you have to critique the University she attended.

As for the murder rate, just in obama’s hometown the murder rate is almost as high as in Iraq. Law abiding citizens who have the right to bear arms are NOT the ones committing the crimes. Criminals will use whatever they can. Guns, knives, baseball bats, crowbars, ropes, etc. etc. etc. objects don’t kill people do.

It is clear to me that no matter what the woman said, did or tried to prove you simply do not like her. Whether it is because she is a Republican woman, a woman in general you hate her and everything she stands for through and through.

  107. I couldn’t agree more with many of your arguments. The principle of further investigation is “triple A” in my books. I believe we need to investigate, discuss, agree and disagree…then find common ground and build on it to find some semi palatable solution to our health care crisis. It probably won’t look exactly like anything we have seen in other countries, or even to what has already be proposed. The important thing is that we alter our basic belief and accept the premis that “right to life” should include the right to health care that allows a quality of life, also.

  111. yep…get lots of money to help mental illness. Did you know that 90% of insurance companies will deny coverage to people who are taking anti-deprecents? Depressing, isn’t it?
What will McCain/Palin do to make insurance companies insure those who need the coverage to help with “prior existing conditions” when they change jobs or seek independent no insurance policies outside of work?
Oh, and on the mental health issues….yeah, lots of us need help….is it covered now? Well, better check. Most policies have limitations that make any chronic condition not covered after a few counseling sessions.

  112. Yep…Carville does indeed wink….not sure hatred is the right term, but he and his lovely wife must have one lively marriage. Can you imagine those two sitting at the kitchen table discussing politics together? Wow, you tube could pay the rent with a video of that LOL

  113. T Mason: “First you say she doesn’t have enough executive experience, she obviously isn’t a good mother because her daughter is going through what thousands of other good families are going through, you bring up that she has a baby with down syndrome so she obviously shouldn’t be VP, you don’t like her bangs, you don’t like how she talks, how she dresses or winks or blows kisses, you don’t like the fact that she hunts or carries a weapon, now you have to critique the University she attended.”

And you’re backing Palin because of these so-called qualities? If I could interrupt your wails of dispair for a moment….

It’s clear you place no premium on higher educational standards. And who’s critiquing the University of Idaho? Ain’t me. I’m sure it’s a fine institution in its own right (and I believe they were the last institution she attended of several)!

But when the chips are down, generally speaking, Harvard’s better. Princeton’s better. Yale’s better. Stanford’s better. And there are better Journalism schools. Don’t shoot the messenger, that’s just the way life works.

I believe you’ve mentioned you work in the health care field. Perhaps education doesn’t matter where you work (yet another reason to univeralize it, if that’s the case), but where I come from, an MSN means you know a lot more than a BSN, LPN, CNA, etc.

And you’re wrong. I think she dresses fabulously. Oh, except for that one, powder-blue windbreaker she wore when she gave the greeting for the Alaska secession group. Otherwise, she spiffs up nicely and I like her hair. But you know, I can’t seem to pay her any compliments, in your mind. You demand my loyalty to Palin, heart, body and soul. Forget it.

  114. Very odd. This golly, gee shucks ‘lemme git backtaya’ persona that the Palin person is affecting is a complete construct. The spinners at McCan’t HQ must have decided to dumb her down as a strategy.

Take a look at the debates she participated in back in Alaska. Different woman altogether – still conservative of course, but a ’serious, professional’ one. Why the hell would they want her to appear like a folksy hillbilly when she is clearly not?

  115. I am backing McCain/Palin for a lot of reasons you obviously don’t understand. I wouldn’t expect you to since you lean far to the left, and refuse to define any mistakes anyone from the left has ever made.

I have a BSN in nursing Sarah. Obviously since I have my BSN rather than my ADN in nursing, research and evidence based practice is a big deal to me.

And yes, there are strict educational requirements that vary from state to state once your degree/NCLEX has been mastered. The scope of practice is different for each, but the university you attended didn’t mean a hill of beans. For Dr.’s or nurses.

The bottom line is the bottom line. How cardiac arrest, CHF, heart attacks, labor and delivery etc etc etc are treated is universal regardless of WHICH university you attended.

If I may be direct, if you haven’t worked in healthcare you only have one side of it. And you obviously don’t have a clue. You are looking at it only as a consumer only.

You don’t see what goes on behind the scenes. You don’t see the red tape that is already there. You have no idea how many CEU’s, classes, etc. nurses and physicians are required to do each and every year. You don’t see how much the government/JACHO is already involved. You don’t see the mounds of paperwork that is USELESS that is required.

You don’t see how doctors wrangle with insurance companies who don’t want to pay for treatments the doctors think would be best for the patient. THAT is why I said last week your gripe is really with insurance companies, not the healthcare industry.

THAT would get worse, good people who really want to help would leave, and you’d be left with the ones who want to work for money, not for quality of care.

I don’t demand your loyalty to anyone. Who you vote for is your choice. If you don’t see/understand how or why so many women who visit this blog are offended by the nasty comments (not the ones on policy), of no substance I might add, against Governor Palin you truly are far left leaning.

  116. Insurance companies run the healthcare industry…hospitals are subject to them….including Medicare and Medicaid. Congress prevented Medicare from negotiating with drug companies to lower perscription escalated pricing. Insurance companies dictate to doctors what will happen with patients.

  117. My whole point was>>>the insurance companies need to be overhauled.

  118. Regulated, overseen by congress, incorperated into a healtcare plan using both existing structures and insurance principles (the few that work) to establish a way for all people to get their basic health care as a RIGHT, not a purchased priviledge.

  119. I am for affordable, but not free insurance or healthcare.

  120. I agree with T. Mason, free insurance or health care would be have to be pretty rotten. Let’s pay for it with our income taxes for those who cannot afford to pay for private health care, or for those who do not have employer provided. Just like most of the rest of the world does.

  121. It also has to do with the process of getting health care that needs addressing. When profit is the primary objective for hospitals and insurance companies, then the patient is neglected. One cannot generate profit by providing care to every patient who needs care…only by denying care can profit be generated. Insurance premiums can only provide profit when the proceeds are not spent on health care for patients.
Rotten health care is care that is denied to the ones who need it….and we have that now.

  122. Bravo Alan for coming up with another lame question regarding a human bodily function. First the questions in regards to her OBGYN choices now your focus on her winking. Quality work your doing. ROFLOLOLOL

  123. Well, perhaps Alan was taking his cue from the elevated discourse from the Republican campaign….

  124. T Mason, if you have a higher degree in nursing, then it’s absolutely APPALLING to me that you claimed Palin’s BA in Journalism, is equivalent or better than Obama’s Ivy League education in the practice of Constitutional Law. Talk about not being able to admit your side is wrong, because you’re leaning too far to that side.

I really enjoyed this assertion as well:

“If I may be direct, if you haven’t worked in healthcare you only have one side of it. And you obviously don’t have a clue. You are looking at it only as a consumer only.”

If I may be direct, if you haven’t been a consumer of the expedient, efficient, and incredibly affordable, so-called “socialized” healthcare, that you don’t have a leg to stand on. You simply want to keep things status quo because you’d rather keep your job and keep us suffering, than see any changes for the greater good of ALL American people.

You enjoy presenting doctors, nurses, etc., as lily-white victims of insurance companies. Please.

I’ve had my share of unnecessary tests. I know too many people who have died of terminal lung cancer because they were diagnosed with pneumonia. An annual visit to my OB/GYN should not have to cost half a grand out of my pocket, nor should have to be scheduled a year in advance. The HPPA violations I clocked when my husband spent a week in the hospital, would choke a horse.

And then there was the billing. Ah, the billing. Where you have to beg for an itemized receipt, and pay $8 for an aspirin.

And the care? Even though my husband (in for a staph infection) hadn’t taken a dump in 4 days, the nurses kept shrugging it off. We asked for something to relieve the constipation, and they refused, said it had to be prescribed. Fair enough, how about prune juice? Absolutely not, not unless under doctors’ orders. PRUNE JUICE is apparently a controlled substance in American hospitals.

They didn’t know how to change his dressings, and actually asked HIM how to do it. When he told them he didn’t know, they asked ME, for chrissakes. Didn’t read the chart. Didn’t take notes from the wound specialist.

Let me tell you, missy, I don’t give a good goddamn about what sort of clusterf*ck is going on behind the scenes of American healthcare.

And I take umbrage with your dismissive attitude about my despair over American healthcare, as a consumer of it.

  125. Peggy
Growing up as a girl, I noticed girls could be the most cruel to another girl they were jealous of. And it was always in groups so as to make themselves feel justified in the disgusting remarks.

Sadly, this blog is no different; just older and NOT wiser women.
You are right on about that. Sarah Is the one for me!

  126. Sarah,

Maybe you need to complain to the people who provided your care instead of someone on the internet?

I said a degree is a degree. And it is. There is nothing that says you need a degree in law from an Ivy League College to run for office, is there? Maybe in YOUR mind that is a prerequisite, or maybe you are simply biased? In either case, Obama isn’t running against Palin, remember? You and I have gone round and round on the obamaland merry go round on that one.

You have no idea WHAT doctors and nurses go through, how horrible the pay is, what we have to deal with, the hours, the patient loads, etc. I wouldn’t expect YOU to try to see it from anyone else’s point of view.

Keep you suffering? What planet are you from? I don’t know anyone in healthcare who enters that profession to make people suffer. Quite the opposite.

And I don’t have to TRY, MISSY, to make it appear that doctors/nurses are prisoners to insurance companies. That comment alone tells me you don’t have a freakin clue. If you haven’t stood by while a doctor pleads with an insurance company to allow a patient to stay ONE MORE DAY to receive care then YOU don’t have a leg to stand on. IF you haven’t gone back and forth with an insurance company, NOT a doctor over a medication your parent needs but they INSURANCE COMPANY won’t pay for it then I don’t want to hear it.

I am glad you are griping about those unecessary tests. You see, sometimes we have to run what you deem unecessary tests for a variety of reasons. One being symptoms can mask or indicate a wide variety of diagnoses, two, lawyers and patients LOVE LOVE LOVE to sue over the most minute detail. YOu mean you didn’t look for XYZ? Then you are liable for ABC. But I wouldn’t expect you to understand that either.

And those HIPPA forms you gripe about are thanks to attorneys, and government oversight, and consumers, and you’re begging for more! Please give the nurses and doctors MORE FREAKIN paperwork, hoops, red tape to muddle through so we have less time to spend with patients.

It is easy, oh so easy to sit back and complain but if you haven’t walked a mile in a healthcare provider’s shoes you don’t need to sit back and be so darn judgemental. There are good and bad in every profession.

I have sat and waited just like you. Before I was a nurse I griped and griped about every little thing. Working on the other side gives new perspective. But I guess you don’t want to understand that side of it.

And the year in advance appointment thing? I have explained that more than once, but you don’t seem to understand, or want to understand. Every ObGYN I know schedules that far out for many reasons. They have a wide variety of patients and they need to take into account the NEW OB patients they will have and the time it takes to see them. God forbid they schedule extra time in case of an impending delivery/new pregnancy. Unless you have issues, that is a once a year visit anyway, so I don’t see why you have your feathers in such a ruffle over that. Just something to gripe about?
You can thank all the lawyers from those Ivy League schools for decreasing the number of med students choosing obstetrics and gynecology because of OUTRAGEOUS liability insurance and a high rate of lawsuits in that profession.

You can take umbrage to whatever the crap you want to. Maybe my attitude toward you is so dismissive because you refuse to look at anything from any other point of view than your own. So, it is simply a waste of my time and energy.

  127. Alan,

You told a caller that the Supreme Court ruling on the Second Amendment was about people being allowed to carry guns, not that they weren’t allowed to own guns. You are mistaken. Here is the legal question: “ The petition for a writ of certiorari is granted limited to the following question: Whether the following provisions, D.C. Code §§ 7-2502.02(a)(4), 22-4504(a), and 7-2507.02, violate the Second Amendment rights of individuals who are not affiliated with any state-regulated militia, but who wish to keep handguns and other firearms for private use in their homes?

  128. Well, T, I’m glad you’ve demonstrated, in glorious living color, many of the problems in the healthcare field today that could be diminished by universal health care. Since you lay all the blame at the feet of insurance companies, it makes sense that you would take the power out of their hands, and give it back to the medical field, through universal healthcare (as it currently works for every OTHER developed country).

    Thanks for the validation.

  129. Incidentally, YOU were the one who claimed the medical field was lily-white when it came to problems with today’s healthcare. So I had every reason to complain about today’s medical field to YOU, as I have experienced it. Forgot that, did you?

Also, I DID complain about the shoddy care we received. Just about every person I know who has received shoddy care, has complained about the incompetence.

Know what happens? NOTHING. Blank stares. Not even any apology, just SAD, TIRED, DEFENSIVE EXCUSES (if you get a response at all!) for the incompetence or negligence.

And THIS is mostly why the American public is so sue-happy when care is incompetent.

Although in my state, they made it more DIFFICULT to even sue for incompetent care, and yet the cost has not decreased from either the medical field, nor the insurance companies.

“Maybe my attitude toward you is so dismissive because you refuse to look at anything from any other point of view than your own. So, it is simply a waste of my time and energy.”

Right back at ya, sister. Except in previous posts, I’ve neatly laid out the blame for today’s current healthcare among ALL involved in the system– lawyers, patients, doctors, administration, politicians, and drug manufacturers.

YOU are the one who continues to insist that it is ONLY the insurance companies’ fault, and that citizens have NO clue if they have a more comprehensive view.
