Joe Vogler, the late founder of the Alaska Independence Party, a party whose mission is to secede from the union, wanted no part of America. He infamously said, “The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government, and I won’t be buried under their damn flag.”
Sarah Palin praised the group for their “good work” and self-sufficiency earlier this year. Jed Lewison put this video together that tells the whole story:
She was against America before she was for it.
But give her the chance to run for the white house and suddenly sudden she’s a home-grown American patriot and just as cute as apple pie.

However, just because her husband joined a party lead by this wacko…just because Sarah made a video for the organization….well, does it all really matter beyond the smear value?
Pennsylvania Republican party sent an email out calling Obama the friend of terrorists. This is all going too far…rallies are turning into barely controlled lynch mobs. Media are in danger just for being there. The republicans are turning the campaign into a hate filled lynching party…..and it isn’t good for anyone.
I believe the republicans be encouraged to return to a discussion of the issues that matter to the people of America. We ask Sarah to realize that her rallies are becoming dangerous gatherings and that she should stick to issues.

Those same crowds are a baby step away from emotionally charged violance. I used to wonder how stupid could people have been in Germany during WWII to have allowed the horror that swept across their country. After the past few days, having listened to the Right-wing o’matics, it is CLEAR to me how it happened. Piece by Piece. The Republicans and their even more extreme allies should be labeled as a domestic terrorist group. Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, and O’Reilly will all share a measure of responsibility when one of their “flock” ends up acting out upon the hate and intolerance they spew.
Palin’s nomination and blind support is the final evidence to me that there is no longer reasonable political discourse possible with the Republicans and the far right. Like the Borg of Star trek fame, they don’t think…they conquer…resistance is futile….

There was a guy named Joe McCarthy. He was one man, but caused mayhem in our country for quite a while. He appealed to the worst in people…fear…fear of the unknown, fear of your own security when dealing with the unknown, fear of what you don’t understand, fear of what you might not know, fear of others’ customs, fear of political beliefs other than your own, fear of religions you don’t understand….fear of strangers. He terrorised America with the fear that “communists” had infiltrated the Department of State. He said, “I have a list”, and it started. He held congressional hearings, spread the fear and distrust into almost every corner of our society, and even propgated the practice of making a “black list” in many industries.
The question, “Are you, or have you ever been…” became the prologue to mental torture that ruined thousands, if not millions. Joe McCarthy was a disgrace of what could happen when we allow fear to take over our country. After 9/11, some of us were fearful that we might see “tailgunner Joe” (a nickname because, although he had claimed to be a war hero, he just had one picture of him sitting in a tail gunner position on a plane) ressurected and be (in concept) an active part of our culture….”Are you, or have you ever been…a terrorist….associated with a terrorist….known somebody who knew somebody who knew something about terrorists?” and so on. Frightening, and almost there for a while.
I was somewhat gratified that our country didn’t completely lapse into McCarthyism, again. But, we still have some slivers alive….and some folks still toy with the McCarthy based approach to politics….
“Did you know that Obama knew……” Straight fear based approach to an irrelevant premis that your acquaintences determine what and who you are.

Can I be one of the first to acknowledge that Sarah Palin’s “stunning” debate PERFORMANCE has done *nothing* to halt McCain’s slide? Let me be clear here:
Nothing. Zip. Nada.
In fact, as of today, McCain is slipping even further behind in the Gallup poll.
Keith Olbermann did an absolutely fantastic dissection of Sarah Palin last night. She is the last person who should be discussing dubious associations.
As far as Obama goes, we have been here before. Associations, espcially tenuous ones and ones that have already been unearthed and overplayed, are NOT what this Election is about.
Sean Hannity has been making the same points ad Nauseum for months now – “the unrepentant Terrorist, Bill Ayers”, “GD, America” etc. This may sway some voters, but I think Obama has transcended this sort of smear. He has been so consistent and I do think he has overcome the major doubts.
The majority of the Electorate are smart people and, after the last eight years, I am hoping that I’m not giving undue credit. They should know that Palin is nothing more than an attractive attack dog, a wolf in sheep’s clothing and a Hail Mary pass. They can see that Obama is a new type of Politician and a good man.
The Barack Obama that the GOP try to present – this dangerous, inexperienced, “exotic”, flimsy candidate – is not the guy who has captured the public attention. The Obama who leads in the polls and who has resonated with the American people is an eloquent, intelligent, dignified, principled, calm, reasoned and responsible role model. He is a guy who has taken on all comers and not backed away from challenges. HE is the man who is ready to lead the country.
The attack dogs will bark and bite, but this will no longer work. It’s a new culture. The people are wiser now and, with all the informational resources at our fingertips, the wool cannot be pulled over our eyes so easily. The people have been hurt by a disastrous regime and phony promises. That’s why I think Obama has already passed the character test.

Most sane people don’t watch Fixed News, so their only audience are the already converted wacko’s. Agreed, but Robert Blair is right– it’s precisely when they’re cornered that they’re the most dangerous. Again, I live in Bible-Belt Midwest, and the militias were rampant in my state in the ’90s. After Oklahoma City, they got quieter, but they’re still around.

I’m anxiously awaiting those who condemned Obama for Rev. Wright to condemn Sarah for being so friendly with this group. Further, apparently Illinois Republican State Senator Diane Nelson did not have a problem with Ayer’s, as she served on the same board. These are apples and oranges.

You do realize that the US was buddies with Saddam at one point. Even sold him our own military weapons. some of which were helicopters which were officially sold to Iraq for crop spraying. These helicopters were the ones used by Saddam in 1988 for the attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja. The United States turned a blind eye at the time. Im Sure you were concerned about genocide back then as well, and Bush I’s involvement???

I was told by a conservitive friend to go to this site it would change my mind. Yes I am a union official and a lifetime Democrat. After reading these posts and other liberal web sites. I will now vote for McCain. I never realized how anti American the left is. My brother fought in Korea and died, you people have no respect for the military. The ‘colonel’ has posted under several different names, just today. I’m not sure if he is a bored jokester, or an out and out nut, but I would be willing to bet a thousand bucks that he is not a Colonel. I have met quite a few officers in my life, and none of them were as unhinged as that poster.
It is not an easy job, nor a job for a nut, to be an officer – our poster here would have been weeded out a loooong time ago.

The way I see it, neither candidate or running mate is good for this country. Do any of them have our interests in mind? I don’t think so. Every election cycle we here the same stuff but nothing changes. It’s all lip service to get them elected. So what do we do, vote for the lesser of two evils? It’s a toss up in my mind.

By the time I arrived in Fairbanks, Vogler was dead but the signs seeking help into his sudden and mysterious disappearance were still plastered-up through-out the Tanana Valley.
