Those despicable robocalls being put out by the McCain camp are being done by the same firm that originated the calls that attacked him in 2000.  Back then, McCain referred to them as “hate calls,”  when he was viciously attacked using the same techniques he’s now using against Barack Obama.

Back in 2000, in South Carolina, the robocalls — and calls to local right-wing talk radio shows — were about John McCain’s “interracial child” and Cindy McCain’s drug addiction. They were a craven, disgusting tactic by the George W. Bush campaign. McCain was, rightly, outraged by them.

In fact, Meghan McCain recently told me she voted for John Kerry because she can’t forgive Bush for what he did to her father.   John McCain stands up at the Al Smith Dinner saying this about his opponent–

“I don’t want it getting out of this room, but my opponent is an impressive fellow in many ways. Political opponents can have a little trouble seeing the best in each other. But I’ve had a few glimpses of this man at his best and I admire his great skill, energy and determination. It’s not for nothing that he’s inspired so many folks in his own party and beyond.

“Senator Obama talks about making history. And he’s made quite a bit of it already. There was a time when the mere invitation of an African-American citizen to dine at the White House was taken as an outrage and an insult in many quarters. Today, it’s a world away from the crude and prideful bigotry of that time. And good riddance. I can’t wish my opponent luck, but I do wish him well.

“Whatever the outcome next month, Senator Obama has achieved a great thing for himself and for his country and I congratulate him.”

–but that very same day, ads McCain is running and robocalls being made on his behalf question Obama’s ability to serve; worse, they instill fear in people that lead to the kind of ugliness we’ve seen in the campaign.  It’s time for John McCain’s campaign to reflect the kind of man he claims to be, not the kind of man he detested in 2000.
