And Republicans Thought a $400 Haircut Was Bad?

October 21st, 2008, 8:43 PM EDT

Four hundred dollars is nothing compared to this:

The Republican National Committee appears to have spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.

The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August.

I can’t wait to hear how this reflects the spending habits of “Joe Six-Pack.”

Update: The McCain camp has issued this statement in response to this story;

“With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.” –McCain-Palin

I guess this means they’d rather be talking about important issues like Bill Ayers, Tony Rezko and Jeremiah Wright and calling Obama a “radical” on robo calls.

Responses to this post...

  1. She is definitely high maintainance with her family and she will definitely take this to the white house we we are as ignorant as she is to vote her in. How come Alaskans elected such a person as Governor?

She really needs to go back to school to learn or go to acting school, sharpen her acting skills and go into the movie industry.

She will never be ready for national office. You don’t learn these things overnight. You develop the interest. And that, she does not have.

    Peace & Light.

  2. Also…

Her interview on CNN have definitely confirmed how biased CNN could be at times. Who was that guy that was practically begging her for one more question and just confirming the Reps. talking points with her. The interviewer is not supposed to be a journalist at all. How can you have such a disastrous interview?

Anyhow, I am glad the American people know better thank this.

  3. So. If the ticket doesn’t win, do they have to give the clothes back??

  4. I thought the neocons were all about ‘EARNING’ their way??? so what is it with this handout to palin???

  5. You folks sound as if it were your money or money you donated to the campaign and it had been misspent.

Audit Central is here just to remind you that “private” money can be spent any way the owner of that money wishes to spend it.

  6. What Alan failed to tell you all is that the clothes are going to auctioned off and given to charity. Too bad Michele Obama can’t do that with all the champagne and caviar she has ordered.

  7. so you listening to the fake news and reading the NYP…hmm thought all media was liberal.

New York Post Page 6 had to post a retraction because Michelle Obama never had this meal. she was not even at the hotel. (Waldorf)

  8. All you Palin worshipers, the truth could be bitter sometimes. This is all I have to say here.

  9. You have to understand that image is king. Alan you’re in TV, image is KING.

  10. ““private” money can be spent any way the owner of that money wishes to spend it.”

so are you admitting that it was a handout, no matter how it was collected. That she didn’t ‘EARN’ it??? Thought we were all about providing for ourselves.

  11. “The questions aren’t about some adviser.”

so its NOT about who one associates with now???

can you guys make up your minds.

  12. Audit central – you need to read the memo from O’Bama on personal wealth redistribution. It’s not your money just because you earned it. It will now be the govt’s money so they can share it “fairly”. True Biden Patriotism!!!!

  13. Give it a rest Alan — Sarah Palin stepped up when called upon, assuming a strenuous schedule, requiring a huge wardrobe of fresh clothing. Ill-fitting, inexpensive clothes are not an option. At least with her perfect figure she can wear clothing off the rack. What did Hillary’s obviously custom-designed wardrobe cost? Let’s compare!

  14. God, talk about hypocrisy.

The Repubs have the gall to try and turn this issue on its head? THEY’RE THE ONES WHO HAVE REFUSED TO TALK ABOUT THE ISSUES! Hello!

    This is unbelievable.

  15. Obama is spending $300,000,000 more than his opponent on this campaign. That’s $300 MILLION! That’s crazy – he should be giving that money to the needy. What a hypocrite.

  16. She always looks great. So does Obama. His clothes are great looking and fit him perfectly. I suspect his wardrobe costs a pretty penny, also. :-)

  17. This really cracks me up, I am amazed at how petty people really can be, this is nonsense, what happened to sticking to the issues. Either you get upset because the McCain campaign doesn’t stick to the issues, or you stoop to talking about the clothing. Give me a break, I am losing all respect for the media. I am amazed at the immaturity that is all over the TV. Where did all the adults go, the ones that were non-partisan and only discussed the facts, the real issues, and stayed away from defamation of character. I am actually an undecided voter, and really paying attention to what is going on so that I can make a mature educated decision. It is extremely difficult when my source of information unfortunately is coming from such immature people that are so cruel and disgusting in their articles and spew such hostility towards one candidate. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone get treated this badly before, I bet people around the world are looking at the American media and laughing at what a joke it is. I understand supporting your party but good grief, this has gotten completely out of hand. Now, I have to say one thing that has swayed me more towards McCain was the horrible actions that were taken against a citizen for asking a legitimate question to Obama. It really made me wonder what type of Democratic party are we dealing with here that they go out of their way to ruin someone’s life and humiliate them just for being a concerned citizen and putting a candidate on the spot. That made me sick and made me wonder what kind of guy is he to allow this to take place. If I were a candidate and one of the citizens asked me a question and was attacked like that I would go on national TV and express my disgust in how the media handled it and fire anyone in my party that took part in it. It definitely shows his character in my book, along with the characters of the people that support him. Anyone that can make fun of people like that is low class.

  18. Keep on digging that hole, Republicans!

    mwhahahahahahahahahahahha

    mwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha…

  19. Jen you ignorant slut. McCain brought up Joe the Unlicensed plumber. Maybe pay attention when you watch the TV, mouth breather…

  20. I don’t care that much about this one but it does go to show that the idea of a down-home candidate is total BS no matter what major ticket your on.

  21. Jen:

Looks to me like Joe is enjoying his 15 minutes to me. Scheduling TV interviews, using the media to promote his candidate of choice. I think it’s fair to say he has held himself out as more than just a concerned citizen. Most of the criticism has been based on his misrepresentations.

  22. One thing I’ll have to say, FuRyUs…although I rarely, if ever, agree with Alan Colmes one thing I have never seen him do is lose his cool and be disrespectful this way to someone he does not agree with. As a matter of fact, I’ve seen him be quite decent to several conservative guests on his show.

I really appreciate him giving pretty much all of us a “voice” here on his site and I think we should all be, at the very least, respectful to one another.

  23. After Nov. 4th, Palin could have a new reality show and call it, The Political Makeover. Hey but then Palin has to keep up with Cindy McCain. Didn’t one of Cindy’s outfits. at the convention, cost over $300,000? Just one!

  24. Everyone knows girls require more than boys…come on Alan. A girl loves her shoes

  25. Let us all remember that when McCain/Cindy or Obama wear nice clothes (including a 300k outfit, of which most of that was expensive jewelery) they have likely paid for it themselves. The McCains are filthy rich, and the Obamas are not doing so poorly themselves. Biden isn’t exactly wealthy, but again, he is quite comfortable.

Palin on the other hand bills herself as one of the people, yet these clothes were bought FOR her, not BY her. That is the key difference.

  26. The Dems would prefer Palin and family were in sack cloth while Michelle eats caviar, lives in a home bought with Rezko money, made money off books ghost written by Ayers etc.

  27. have no problem with my donations going to this. If you do, don’t donate. I want Palin to look great because that generates votes to win against the false prophet.

They can make this just another issue of going after Sara Palin but its a fact of life that the expense accounts of canidates while traveling on the road is pretty extreme.

The Emperor to be is an empty suit!

    Michelle to Barack! Sweetie?
I think that I will order a little room service
    Just a little light snack
    Little people eat McDonald’s
but I’m on the $400,000,000 Campaign express
    Nobody will audit my expenses

  28. Considering Bambi is getting in kind donations from favorable reporting from the MSM at ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC and CNN in he TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLALRS TO LOOK GOOD and tens of thousands of fraud realted votes from ACORN, stacked polls to hoist the false messiah and hundereds of millions in suspicious donations a lot from overseas, I would say so what to this article. The money has been spent not only on her but her husband and kids, so they look sharp wherever they go.

  29. New York Post Page 6 had to post a retraction because Michelle Obama never had this meal. she was not even at the hotel. (Waldorf)

  30. What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?

What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee?

What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards?

What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to painkillers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization?

What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five? (The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

What if Obama couldn’t read from a teleprompter?

What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing seven planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama’s family had made their money from beer distribution?
What if the Obamas had adopted a white child?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are? This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.
    Educational Background:
    Barack Obama:
Columbia University – B.A. Political Science with a Specialization in International Relations.
Harvard – Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude
Joseph Biden: University of Delaware – B.A. in History and B.A. in Political Science. Syracuse University College of Law – Juris Doctor (J.D.)

John McCain: United States Naval Academy – Class rank: 894 of 899

Sarah Palin: Hawaii Pacific University – 1 semester
North Idaho College – 2 semesters – general study

University of Idaho – 2 semesters – journalism

    Matanuska-Susitna College – 1 semester
University of Idaho – 3 semesters – B.A. in Journalism

Education isn’t everything, but this is about the two highest offices in the land as well as our standing in the world.

    You make the call.

  31. Do you really think Obama is a terrorist? Do you really think foreign money can and will subvert our country if Obama is elected? If so, you are not just paranoid, you are more than just a whinney sore loser, you are mentally unbalanced and need medical help…that is if you can afford it.

  32. You know, Cindy McCain could have paid for the wardrobe, can’t you find anything else to complain about, Alan

  33. Do you really think Obama is a terrorist?

If obama is a terrorist, what does that say about our Dept of Homeland Security.

  34. “THEY ARE JUST LETTING YOU SEE THE REAL PICTURE(BEYOND POLITICS),”

so you wait until a few weeks before the election to tell everyone that obama is a terrorist?? oh yeah, exactly when mccains polls started to drop as well. Not during obama senate years. So we can have terrorists as senators???? Didn’t hear mccain mention this once during his RNC acceptance speech, why not if its so important??

please, the majority of the people realize how desperate you neocons are right now.

Mr. Obama’s favorability is the highest for a presidential candidate running for a first term in the last 28 years of Times/CBS polls.

So go ahead and continue your ignorant attacks… Obamas ratings only go up when you do.

  35. Patsey, please try thr decaf…

The definition of communism is not whatever the economic plan of the Democratic nominee is, even if the RNC tells you so.

They have CONSISTANTLY said this about every one of their opponents.

You guys would Eisenhower and Teddy Roosevelt communists.

  40. TRUTH,
You WERE entertaining, but now it’s getting old.

Actually, this Colonel, Cocoa, and TRUTH, aiways come together.

  41. JEFTHRO,
You said this yesterday, AGAIN I ask you for one shred of evidence that this so called intelligence agent is not someone telling whoppers.

It’s SO easy to look back at the archives and see how silly he is posting on this little website.

  42. Alan, I would like someone to tell me what accomplishments Obama has accomplished. Everyone is so hell bent about running Palin into the ground and she has more accomplishments under her belt then Obama by far! By the way, the post on GPA or where they graduated, give me a break! Books sense and common sense are very, very different! It is extremely obvious that the media is being bought, this election is a joke! Obama is very intelligent, no doubt, he has figured out how to take advantage of the American people and pray on their insecurities and con them. He is a smooth talker, he gives great speeches, that in no way says he actually knows what he is doing, nor does it qualify him to be the leader of our Country. This is a prime example of how the media and social sector can distort people’s views and glamorize someone that puts on a good show. I have not heard one person give a good example of Obama’s experience, nor have I heard anyone give any logical response to why they are voting for Obama, other than he is a pretty boy and talks sweet to them. GIVE ME A BREAK. Alan, are you sweet on Obama? ;-)

  43. Because the only response to this nonsense is ridicule:

McCAIN IS A RIGHT WING FASCIST
AMERICAN SOLDIERS FOUGHT AND DIED AND SHED BLOOD FIGHTING FASCISM. WE WILL NOT ALLOW IT HERE. MCCAIN”S CAMPAING IS RUN AND SUPPORTED BY CROOKED LOBBISTS WHO MERGE GOVERNMENT AND BIG BUSINESS AGAINST THE PEOPLE.
THE OWNERS OF THE DIEBOLD VOTING MACVHINES ARE ALREADY SWITCHING OBAMA VOTES TO MCCAIN IN WEST VIRGINIA> THE GOP ARE PURGING ELIGIBLE DEMOCRATIC VOTERS!
MCAIN”S PLAN IS TO STRIP YOU OF YOUR FREEDOM, RELIGON AND YOUR BELONGINGS! THEN HE WILL GIVE IT TO HISFASCIST CORPORATE LEADERS. HE THEN BECOMES YOUR FUHRER ! THIS IS WITH OUT A SHOT BEING FIRED.

    Actually, that was fun.

  44. JETHRO,

You’re so funny. Anyone who dishes out the same wacko rhetoric back at you is a nutjob.

  45. Speaking of St. Louis, here’s everything you need to know about the two men’s approaches:

Obama put on a rally under one of our national monuments, the Gateway Arch, and spoke to a diverse crowd of about 150,000 people.

McCain, on the other hand, doled out tickets to about 6,000 people for a “rally” in the St. Louis suburb of “New Town,” a berg resembling something out of Jim Carrey’s “The Truman Show.” It’s its own closeted little community (established in the last 8 years, but designed to LOOK established and squeaky clean) with store, post office, fountains, fake rivers, and for a dose of reality, styrofoam cutouts of happy dancing hobos instead of scary homeless people (OK, made that last one up).

  46. So who is the socialist now, folks!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8EyGpOU3qM

McCain is a hypocrite and the depths of dishonor that he has gone to in this campaign is sad — so very sad. And I voted for the man in 2000.

But still, I say HA HA HA to all you people calling Obama a socialist — get a new talking point please. Actually, don’t. Instead get some integrity and some honor.

  48. I am proud to say I am leaving the DNC after this election. First, I do not support either ticket. And I am not voting for either Obama or McCain. But a huge reason why I can’t stand these left wing Liberals in the DNC or in the media is that they contradict themselves soooooo much. Why is it ok for the entire media to investigate the expenses of Palin, her wardrobe, or every detail of her life, yet when Palin or McCain want to investigate Obama and his real relationship to Aayers it’s considered unfair? And then the DNC says let’s stick to the issues! But if someone was applying for a job where they had to get a security clearance and they saw you had a strong connection to someone who was once considered a terrorist, you wouldn’t get the job! And again, I don’t believe in most of her views, but I can’t stand these liberal media people. Because when it’s done to their candidate they cry like they are 5! I can’t wait to become an Independent!

  49. harry2,

    Buh Bye!
Take care, and take your right wing talking points with you!

  50. Harry2,

If you were honest with yourself you would know that Obama tried to keep this campaign to the issues, but McCain went into the gutter. Period! Obama is not going to lose this election because of the McCain gutter campaign — so if Obama or his surrogates needs to walk in the gutter a little bit to get a point across, then so freaking be it.

If you are leaving the DNC because of this particular issue, you were never truly part of it to begin with.

    I am an Indepedent.

  51. Also, at a time when Americans are struggling to make ends meet and she is supposed to be this “averageamericanjoesixpackidiot” it sends a mixed message. Maybe she used to be an average American but even before she was picked for VP it’s not like the average American has the resources available to the governor.

  52. Harry 2

I don’t really know what you’re talking about when you say “when Palin or McCain want to investigate Obama and his real relationship to Aayers it’s considered unfair?”.

In case you hadn’t noticed IT HAS BEEN INVESTIGATED CONSTANTLY! If it were anything more than the casual acquaintance they said it was it would have come out by now!
The issue isn’t whether or not they investigate it. The issue is IS THIS RELAVANT? The mccain campaign has tried to make this connection with Ayers into the main point in the campaign. I don’t know about you, but I have yet to hear hundreds of radio and television ads about sarah palin’s wardrobe.

  53. So what? The clothes will be donated to charity. WOuld you be happier if she’d dressed up in Osh-Kosh overalls bought from Wal-Mart? She’s also the least well-off of the candidates, what 150K for her family income, compared to 300K for Joe Biden and more for Obama and McCain? It wasn’t a good decision to spent sooo much money on her but it’s not a bad one either: no one is complaining about the cost of Obama’s columns, “state seal” renting the stadium (Public good or hubris? You make the call!)

  54. Hi Christine,

I don’t think that anybody who runs for President or Vice President is really an “Average American”. Sure, we all hear that anybody can grow up and become President. But is that really true? Let’s take the $250,000 income bracket as an example. Palin makes less than that, but she’s still over the $100,000 mark. How many candidates from either major party in your lifetime have had an annual income below $250,000?

People with this type of income are not “average Americans”. Wouldn’t you agree?

  55. Uhhh…no, Mr. Colmes, we Republicans didn’t think John Edwards’ $400 haircut was “bad”, we thought it was funny. Don’t liberals know the difference between being criticized and being mocked?

  56. Chappy4,
Don’t be jealous of Michelle Obama because you have a butt-ugly wife. She’s not fat, and DIDN’T STAY IN THE WALDORF, you idiot! Or didn’t you read the RETRACTION and APOLOGY on pg 6? And MIR, didn’t others use the columns? I bet you didn’t worry about coloumns in ‘04 when DUMBYA used them. You right wingers are the dumbest species alive!

  57. Who cares what Dick Morris says?

If I said, Al Sharpton, or Michael Moore said….

Dick Morris has as much or as little credibility as those guys.

    Who cares?

  58. FuRyUs, not that you really deserve any attention whatsoever from your ignorant comment, but you are definitely representing the Obama campaign exactly the way we expect it. I am sure he would be so proud to have you backing him, and I have to thank you as a matter of fact, you have just justified exactly what I was saying about some (not all) of his supporters. I am sure you are one of the select few that is an embarrasment to the democratic party, but you definitely represent the type of person that will fall for nonsense. I haven’t seen anything you have said on this site that makes any sense at all, nor does any of it sound intelligent. So, without wasting anymore of my time with someone like you, I would like to say thank you to Angela. You are right Angela we all have the right to our opinion and there is no room for that type of behavior, which also brings up the points I made before on the hideous remarks that have been made by the media. It would be nice if they could stick to the actual issues we face in our country and lay off the defamation of character. I have not heard one person in the McCain organization treat the Obama’s disrespectfully in any way, and they shouldn’t. They seem like they have a wonderful family and do not deserve to be mistreated, I just don’t agree with his views, but it is not reason to attack anyone in either campaign! It is sickening, and as for the media, Alan included why get mixed up in that maturity, you are better than that, don’t stoop to that level.

  59. Just to correct my last statement, I meant to say, why get mixed up in that immaturity! :-)

  60. Haven’t you right-wingers been whining (do you guys ever stop whining?) because Obama refused public financing of his campaign. Well McCain accepted, and since the Palin family wardrobe came from McCain’s campaign funds, they were paid for with public monies (socialism?). They could have dressed the Palin’s quite handsomely w/out spending that kind of money.

And please one of you right-wingers, comment on the video of McCain during the 2000 campaign explaining very smartly to the selfish little rich girl why the rich should pay higher taxes. Now that is the McCain that I could respecte. Wouldn’t ever vote for him, ever, but I could at least respect him.

  61. It wasn’t the $400 haircut, it was holding up the plane on the tarmac that people were annoyed at.
For everyone that is critical of Palin , wait until Biden is in the office. He will make Quayle look like a thoughtful speaker.
On top of that, Palin has more experience than Obama unless you want to add in dealings with terrorists.

  62. Sorry, Clinton’s haircut was ‘only’ $200.

  63. Isn’t it odd that every time some surprise news arises, like Michelle Obama spending $500-$1000 for an expensive snack, suddenly the media – not the campaign, mind you – finds something on the opposing ticket that they parade around. I wonder: If Barak Obama were confirmed to be HIV positive, would the media begin hawking a “Palin has halitosis” “news” story?

  64. By the bye, I’ve seen what at least purported to be a copy of the bill. It was signed by (at least someone claiming to be) “Michelle Obama”. Any word on its authenticity? If so, how about the authenticity of the widely disputed (by right-wing bloggers) birth certificate for Obama? That’s surely a silly “news” item; but why does it not get equal treatment in the mainstream media?

  65. And finally, what about Mr Biden’s comment regarding the “generated” test coming if Mr Obama is elected? Why did that not get a mention on NBC, CBS or ABC until it was tied to a story about Palin?

In the words of Ron White: “Ok, I’m listening….”

  66. That’s because these stories usually prove not to be true.

The NY Post printed their retraction of the story:

THE source who told us last week about Michelle Obama getting lobster and caviar delivered to her room at the Waldorf-Astoria must have been under the influence of a mind-altering drug. She was not even staying at the Waldorf. We regret the mistake, and our former source is going to regret it, too. Bread and water would be too good for such disinformation.

It seems that the MO is to make up a story, get it out to all the right wing carnival barkers, and usually Druge picks it up, then it spreads from there.

  67. A $400. haircut last what six weeks?

A good wardrobe can last five to ten years….Think Coco Channel suits, you idiot.
