Here Lies The Republican Campaign

October 26th, 2008, 10:40 PM EDT

Sarah Palin continues to misrepresent Barack Obama on the campaign trail.  In Tampa this weekend she said, “Just yesterday, the New York Times reported that Barack Obama’s inaugural address is already written. Nine days out from the election, nine days out and yet, uh, it’s already written.”

But what Palin is saying is an Obama-written inaugural address is actually a draft by John Podesta that Podesta published this past summer in his book The Power of Progress, at a time he was an advisor to Hillary Clinton.  And the Times was clear about it being a Podesta exercise, not a speech written by Obama in advance of his election.  It will be interesting to see the level of desperation during the last full week of the campaign.  Will they continue to lie or will they go out with dignity?

  1. Will they go out with dignity? Doubtful, given the tactics they’ve gone with so far. You keep hearing McCain talking about bringing the troops back with honor, but the example he’s setting shows he really has no honor to speak of. He’s changed his positions on several things, from taxes to fuels, and now is attacking Bush, who he voted with 92% of the time – how do you attack someone you agree with 9 out of 10 times and not look like a collossal hypocrite?

McCain may have had honor once, but he’s lost it now. Very hard to maintain respect for him.

No I guarantee the honor has been so drained from the Republican party that election day will turn into election month, and the lawyers will be out in force blaming the machines and hanging chads and whatever have you.

Let’s see some idiot bring up ACORN to rebutt me now. Let’s just clarify – registration fraud is one thing, and can skew early polling, but it’s a damned far cry from voter fraud. If you see Mickey Mouse at your polling center, then you may have a point, otherwise, save yourself the trouble of looking stupid. And one more note – McCain was a keynote speaker for ACORN just a few years ago. Just another dose of hypocrisy from ol’ Johnny.

  2. I DON’T BELIEVE THE POLLS .

  3. i seriously doubt it. dignity is a word the mccain campaign is unfamiliar with. they are just telling outright lies no matter if the truth hits them on top of their heads.

  4. Palin tells people what they want to hear.

So I guess she learned something from Fox.

  5. There is a clear rising desperation in the comments coming from the Republican camp and their media supporters. As an Australian I am completely amazed that the Republican camp have failed to articulate how they will address the current international financial crisis. They are so focussed on trying to bag Obama they are simply failing to send any message that explains why people should vote for McCain. I respect the man but there is something terribly wrong with how this campaign has been run. The Republicans need a new page in their playbook instead of the two they have used in this campaign. Attacking the man (Obama) or engaging in Reagan nostalgia have been a abject failure. The Republicans need an intellect that can come up with a policy that is fresh and relevant to today’s circumstances.

  6. Well it’s a good thing he’s campaigning for the presidency since he wouldn’t be able to find a job in the FBI/CIA. We don’t need to question his honor and dignity. Actions speak much louder than words. McCain has been the arrogant, indignant, smearmongering imposter. He’s the one that’s questionable. Get over yourself, get some education and drop all the prevarications. The only tears I’ll be shedding are tears of joy. How sweet that soup will be!

  7. If the high road to the White House is blocked, it’s not beneath the Republicans to slither on their bellies. Very few low and dispicable tactics are. Can they support the President after a loss like Democrats did?

  8. Alan. you’re surprised? All Palin does is lie…

  9. Oldlefty,
What do you suggest we do about our oil dilemma if we break ties with the Saudi’s as you’ve suggested?

  10. Faith,
I’m an independent conservative, but here’s your chance to change my opinion of Obama. I’m all ears. Educate me about Obama, and please don’t leave out the dignified and honorable accomplishments OK?

  11. The Conservative,

First of all what does our oil dilemma have to do with pointing out the fears that many of us had of Bush, especially with Cheney’s ties to the PNAC, and their plans to invade Iraq before they came into office, and their REAL financial ties to those who ACTUALLY supported and funded terrorists, as opposed to Obama’s insignificant ties to people with no real influence?

Secondly, I didn’t suggest that we should have broken ties with the Saudis, simply that from the time that we understood their support of radical Islam, (at least from the 80s), we should have moved more and more towards developing alternative fuels while putting pressure on them to tamp down their support of Wahabism, instead of the oil companies sucking up to them for personal profit.

  12. Peter,
Here’s your chance too? Please give me the facts about your crticism of Palin’s accomplishments, with Obama’s. Why is she unfit for the vice presidency? What qualifies Obama for the higher office that he seeks? What was his voting record in the Senate? How much “pork”, or “earmarks”, did he approve?

  13. Oldlefty,
We still don’t have alternate fuel sources readily available, and it will take many years before any are beneficial to make difference. Complaining is not an answer. Just answer the question.

  16. The Conservative,

You guys trashed everyone who has been trying to push us towards alternative fuels.

Other alternatives are, better fuel efficient and electric cars, and better public transportation.

But why is it better to keep making the same mistakes and supporting those who make their fortunes supporting those who support radical Islam, and spread it all over the world, while whining about our fear of radical Islam?

  17. Aside from legislation with Coburn and Lugar, and the work in Illinois, like video taping police interrogations, which led to more convictions, it amazes me that the right is so scornful of “community organizers”.

They hate the federal government helping poor people, but they also hate those who work on the community level, to help people help themselves.

Obama worked closely with Catholic Charities to help laid off steel workers, but THAT’s to be ridiculed too.
Obama has actually served the same time in the state and US government as Abraham Lincoln.

  18. Oldlefty,
I was aware of their Muslim ties way before Bush. Where’ve you been all these years?

    ……………………………………………………………

Then you should have known that they were not allowing 9/11 to get in the way of their pre 9/11 plans to occupy Iraq, and calling Obama a “Muslim” and hinting that he is a terrorist is just grotesque farce.

  19. Alan said:

It won’t be interesting, it will be sad. I really think McCain is better than this. I am convinced the desperation and nastiness is an outside influence.

Palin, however, certainly seems to be in her element with her lies and nastiness. What a disgusting person Palin is.

  20. Oldlefty,
If I remember correctly, the administration gave Saddam Hussein many opportunities to comply with inspections, and offered many opportunities for diplomatic discussion, which he continued to ignore, prior to any military action. You always seem to ignore this. With respect to Obama, convince me that he’s a christian.

    ……………………

Reagan, (who took the solar panels down), was there in the 80s….The Democratic congress was so busy running away from Carter, that they ignored his prophetic advise about energy.

In the 90s, Clinton SHOULD have pushed more, and the Republican congress thought that NOTHING, NOTHING, I tell you, was more important than Clinton’s sex life.

  22. Oldlefty,
Republican congress thought that NOTHING, NOTHING, I tell you, was more important than Clinton’s sex life.

In fairness, I’m pretty sure Clinton had the same priorities as the Republican congress.

I was pretty irritated with Clinton at the time. I’m just a mid level corporate hack, but I would never start a ‘relationship’ with one of our interns. The power relationship is too loaded in one direction, and like I said, I’m just a mid level manager, not President of the most powerful nation in the world!

  23. Conservative, Surely you’re just being obstinate. Clearly I don’t have enough time or room to list all of the qualities and accomplishments of Sen. Obama. You sound quite capable of doing research for yourself. Furthermore, I can’t change the mind of the immutable. What I can say is Sen. Obama has been most dignified in appearance and composure throughout this election. He hasn’t found the need to defame the character of his opponent by using a misnomer. He has stood above all others and kept to his agenda. There certainly is honor and dignity in that. To compare education alone is incomparable.(I’ve stated this in another blog). Sen. Obamas’ education by far, surpasses that of Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin. He exudes intelligence by the mere fact of him graduating magna cum laude, being president of the Harvard Law Review, his B.A. in Political Science. The fact that he taught Constitutional Law gives me cause to know he understands the fundamentals of this government. You can make fun all you want of his “community organizing” but in reality he chose to help his fellow man instead of following an agenda that would have furthered his career. That, I believe is honorable. Whether you like it or not, he has been trying to bring this country together, not divide them, his acclamation by the people of this country is proof enough for me to realize he has the capability to bring us together as a nation, to want to try to be a better person, a better nation and to work together, that our diversity can convey our equality. Look, both parties have a past, everyone has a past, would you rather someone judge you on the merits of your past? I know I wouldn’t. Sen. Obama has shown his integrity by sticking to the issues, looking to the future, and working towards making United States the great nation it once was. Like I said before, I don’t expect you or anybody else to change their mind by anything I’ve said, what I do expect is for everyone to take every issue, every fact, every bit of iformation and realistically judge them on their own merits. As far as I’m concerned, I rest on Sen. Obamas’ merits.

  24. Um Cara

I understand. I always thought Clinton was TOO centrist.

    As for the intern….
I agree, when you KNOW they are gunning for you, and you hand them the bullet, on a silver platter.

Someone on the Daily Show said, Bill Clinton wants to be the bride at the wedding, the baby at the christening, and the corpse at the funeral.

    Oh well,
    Bye for now.

  25. OMG

I just read on NPR’s web site:

The Anchorage Daily News announced on its Web site Sunday that it is endorsing Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

The people who know Palin best do not want her in higher office!

  26. Oldlefty,

You hit the nail on the head when you wrote “as opposed to Obama’s insignificant ties to people with no real influence?”. The issue is NOT how much influence those people that Obama often calls “mentors” have now. The issue is how much influence his “mentors” will have with him should he be elected.

  27. UM Cara

You didn’t say if the people that know Palin best are Alaskan or not. Given her 80% favorable rating by Alaskans I would suppose that they would want her to continue working at the state level. Most likely they know a good thing when they see it.

  28. Bernie,

You make it sound like OldLefty used the word mentor, but that is YOUR word.

So, who are you talking about being his mentors, exactly?

  29. Bernie,

You didn’t say if the people that know Palin best are Alaskan or not.

I sure did – I was talking about the biggest newspaper in Alaska, The Anchorage Daily News.

  30. Bernie,

I would suppose that they would want her to continue working at the state level. Most likely they know a good thing when they see it.

And I totally agree with then. I too want her to continue working at the state level.

  31. Um Cara,
NOT my word at all rather Obama’s.

  32. Bernie,

In this discussion, you brought up the word mentor. So who are you talking about? Rev Wright, I assume, who else?

  33. Um Cara you wrote

“And I totally agree with then. I too want her to continue working at the state level.”

So you must agree that Sarah has been a good governor.

  34. Bernie,
So you must agree that Sarah has been a good governor.
No, if she becomes VP she will have to give up her job as governor, should McCain/Palin lose, she will retain her job as governor. Therefore, I would be pleased as punch to see her continue as governor.

  35. Cara,
In his two books Obama has spoken of at least two or three people that he described as “mentors”. Including but not limited to Rev. Wright and Frank Marshall Davis.

    October 27th, 2008 at 10:53 am
  36. Bernie,

Well, he has distanced himself from Wright, so I suppose he will not have much influence. Frank Marshall Davis has been dead 20 years, so I’m guessing he will have limited input as well.

  37. Cara,
We all SUPPOSE that Wright, at worst, will have limited influence on Obama. But the real point is that we just don’t know.

Just like we don’t know what influence Mr Davis had on him or Bill Ayers for that matter.

And, certainly Obama hasn’t conducted himself in a manner would lead anyone to suppose they should trust him to keep his word about anything.

I also have to wonder did Obama call his drug dealer a “mentor”? Did Obama sell drugs to support his habit or pay his way though Colimbia?

  39. Bernie,

You have gone off the deep end…

    (cue scarey music)
We don’t KNOW whether McCain was brainwashed while in captivity all those years ago… We don’t KNOW for sure that he isn’t really a Manchurian candidate.

I could go on, in a similar manner that you just did – but it’s all too silly.

I would firmly suggest you not vote for Obama, Bernie. It doesn’t sound like he is the candidate for you.

  40. I am a recently retired blue-collar worker, and I have talked to many of these people. Here’s what they don’t get:

    1. Obama is only going to tax people making over 250K, but he will raise the capitol gains tax. Have people ever checked their 401K plans? That is capitol gains!! So EVERYONE WITH A 401K PLAN COULD PAY!( Check with your tax advisor if you don’t believe this )

    2. Obama will place a “windfall tax” on the oil compaines. The fact is — whatever tax is placed on oil compaines will be added at the gas pump the same way the federal tax is!

    3. Obama will raise taxes on big companies. Anther lie — whatever tax is levied on compaines ( like for example, Walmart ) will again be passed on directly to the consumer!

Most of the blue collar workers actually think that they will get a tax cut if they make under 250K.

    Thanks,

    Neil

  41. Okay too much hate here

    1. so what if Palin is a small town Mayor, She is a woman and takign up the mantle to lead a nation that seeks it and that is commendable. something that should be commented on by our daughters as “See Honey, you can be president Hillay and Sarah made it really possible”

    2. So What if Obama is a Msulim , should that matter does the relion make the man or is the man’s faith determinate by his surroundings, Kennedy turned out to be a damn fine Catholic President. To make the word Muslim a Slur is just as bad a hurling the Dreaded N***er word about and people who use it to stab at the spot of fear born of ignorance should be ashamed

    3. So what if John McCain is Old, He has earned those wrinkles and by God if he seeks to become president in his waning years so be it and also he shuld be applauded by his past record of Across the Aisle politics and his makign peace with his past.

    4. Biden has a Big mouth , but then again why be a politician if you are meek and mousey, Politicians are supposed to Roar with the voice and will of the people

We are Americans we cannot stand if we divide ourselves along self inposed lines like Cadver markings , We have to vote and then stand in line behind the Majority choice , and if that coice is bad , seek to make sure that person is promptly removed WE HAVE that right not COngress or SENATE solely a President cannot lead those that refuse to be led by him / her .

this Devise talk is dismaying to me , seeing so much blatant Racism , Sexism , elitism and so many other ISm’s I feel Like dirty. Grow up get a clue , the right to disagree and curse and hurl vile epitaphs does not mean you should , it just says that you can if the cause and the reason is known only to you , that is the only license you need. But mind you there is a sense of responsibility to be had as well ….

    VOTE………

  42. I don,t dislike McCain. His 1st blunder was running to the right instead of moving to the center. The center was his base and his mavrick image would haved blossom. The right wing of the GOP would hve came on board. By going to the center, independents and 1/4 of the dems may have followed. OBAMA would had to fight a uphill battle. PALIN was a bad choice because moderate GOP folks and independents where left for OBAMA to feed on and the man has ate well.

  43. Neil H, thank you for breaking down the Obama tax policy. Sean Vanity said so himself, all the big corporations never pay the increase in taxes-the consumer does. Now please, for the life of me, tell me what McCain is going to do for us??? I can’t seem to get it from FOX (fair & balanced)…. yeah right. The media is so focused on Obama, no one can seem to tell me anything about McCain. …Also, when the big corporations get their tax cuts, such as during the Bush reign, did you see any money given back to you? I don’t think so..You paid as much as ever for gas & groceries…
