Elizabeth Dole’s Disgusting New Ad

October 29th, 2008, 4:52 PM EDT

She’s desperate apparently, and likely to lose to Democratic Assemblywoman Kay Hagan.  Perhaps that’s why she’s approved an add implying that Hagan is a “Godless American.”

“A leader of the Godless Americans PAC recently held a secret fundraiser for Kay Hagan,” the 30-second spot says, showing footage of the group’s members talking about their atheist beliefs on cable news.

“Godless Americans and Kay Hagan. She hid from cameras. Took godless money,” the ad concludes. “What did Kay Hagan promise in return?”

At the very end of the ad, a voice sounding like Hagan’s says: “There is no God.”

This smear is based on a fundraiser held on Hagan’s behalf hosted by a group that advocates for atheists’ rights, called the Godless Americans Political Action Committee.  It so happens that Hagan is a member (and elder) at the First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.

  1. Dole, you are really a doll!

  2. Repulsive! Good God, do these people, Republicans, have no shame whatsoever???

    Does desperation supercede decency?

Thank God for these times in which the majority of the American people have finally become more saavy about this kind of character @ssasination.

    It just isn’t working.

  3. I saw Dole speak in 2000 and I said she was an empty suit repeating vague, meaningless stump speeches in an amazingly boring way.

But now she has slithered down to a new low, that is one of the most despicable of a LOT of despicable political ads I have seen. RIP.

  4. Elizabeth Hanford Dole. What have you become?

Jesus, it’s like the Picture of Dorian Gray, anymore.

  5. Liddy Dole should have retired with Bob when he left the Senate to seat himself down in his rocking chair, years ago.

Liddy’s a carpet-bagger and how she was elected a US Senator representing NC in the first place was a mystery to me. She hadn’t been a full time resident of NC since the 50s or 60s. The only explanation is she rode the coat-tails of the “Grand Republican Revolution” into office.

Since The Revolution is now dead of its own hand/weight, Liddy can finally retire to her rocking chair alongside Bob at their Watergate condo. They can spend their last years rocking together, watching the sunset over the Potomac and reminiscing about the collapse of the Republican Party they played a part in.

The godless ad is her last gasp. It won’t work.

  6. Dear Alan

I am a huge suporter of Elizabeth Dole for no other reason than she is a woman and working for a man’s job. She is Republican. She is pro God therefore “Pro life.” No conservative religion in the world support abortion. Abortion is part of religion. She is a conservative Christion.

For example, if Rev. Jessi Jackson’s young unmarried mother practice abortion then Rev. Jessi Jackson will not be around. I am not taking Mrs. Dole’s side bet she is stiking with her principle. May be it will cost her the election with a man. Sen Hillary Clinton lost to a man too. Now the democratic party is trashing Elizabeth Dole and Sarah Palin. Women in Democratic party are sexist. They forgot that Elizabeth Dole was first woman from Harvard University.

  7. Liz Dolt, Well it’s not against the law to tell a lie.

Her ads show her desperation and total ignorance.

I wish we could throw them all out, I am so sick of hearing about those cretins.

    I hate politics and politicians.

  8. Since when has telling the truth about Kay Hagan become an attack? Kay sits in church here in Greensboro, yet she attends a fundraiser thrown for her by a group that prides themsevles on being Godless.Sounds a little like Obama sitting 20 years in a church listening to his mentor preach racism doesn’t it.It’s the same old “Suck up to who can help my career” move we have to come to cherish from the Democrat Party.

  9. I second that Larry, hate politics and politicians.

I had little hope on Obama early, loved his speech on old dirty politics, and how he’ll revise and bring new fresh politics… ehem, Senator, you are running the dirty old politics you despise.

The nail in the coffin was when Obama decided to drop public financing which he agreed and supported with McCain. As a result we see his negative campaign ads over and over and over, even buying out 30min primetime spot. Signing an agreement then breaking it without remorse is dishonorable, but more important is his indecision (had to change mind after supporting it???), something we can’t disregard.

  10. The following lyric from ‘Oh What a Circus’ from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s EVITA perfectly sum up Liddy’s tenure

We’re all going to see how she did nothing for years!…

Come to think of it, the same song has a lyric that reminds me very much of Sarah P:

She didn’t say much but she said it loud

  11. Personally i dont think McCain was ever shot down (i never seen the wreakage) what ive heard is that he was awol, 5 day binger, followed a girl to a local village and discovered it was behind enemy lines wait, stop! i cant do this i gotta take a shower… I really dont know how the repulicans do it.

  12. Oh come on Craig, Why doesn’t the L.A. Times release the video on the meeting with Kahlidi (sic) so we can determine for ourselves what was said with O’Bama and Ayers all in the same room. Where is the honesty in that. Confidential sources, call the guy and get his permission to release the video. Do we as Americans not have a right to know and make a judgment for ourselves, without the bias of the media

  13. That’s right, we want to know what he said, what are they so afraid of?

  14. What’s the big deal?

Has anyone ever provided any evidence for the existence of a god?

Doesn’t it seem unlikely and just a little be arrogant that the inhabitants of a small plant revolving around one of the 200 billion stars in our galaxy, which is itself one of approximately 120 billion galaxies in the universe, can be right about their supernatural being being the creator of it all?

Unlikely, a little bit arrogant and just plain deluded.

I wish more politicians had the courage to challenge this childish assumption.

  15. Disgusting.

Freedom of religion includes the right to be free from religion. These are AMERICANS exercising their constitutionally guaranteed rights. Another of which is their right to support the candidate of their choice.

Please note, Atheists tend to be better educated, more law abiding, and more likely to be loyal to their spouses, than the religious. Supported by the statistics. Go look it up.

    Values anyone?

  16. I agree Erik—-those people have a right to practice their beliefs—even it is that they believe in no God.That was never the subject here–the subject was Kay Hagan accepted money from the group, then seemingly tried to cover it up.I don’t doubt Kay’s beliefs–she claims to be a christain.
I really don’t think Kay would hang out with these people just for the entertainment—she needed something—-money.Like I said before–typical Democrat.
Can you really picture Nancy Pelosi spending quality time with a black amreican who isn’t a millionaire? Can you see Hilliary Clinton at a gay pride march if it isn’t an election year? No—they will kiss up to whoever they can that will help them get elected.
Example—look at how the Kennedy Brothers treated Jimmy Hoffa after he got JFK in the White House—the Hoffa Invetigation started as soon as they were done with him.(Sorry got carried away here)

  17. Nope. This is about Dole “implying that Hagan is” Godless. As if that would make her any less American. It is Dole that is “less American” not Hagan. Deflecting the argument not withstanding.

Oh, and by the way, I’m from San Francisco. Nancy Pelosi represents me, and does so well. I’ve marched in the same Pride Parade as her, along with a lot of African Amaricans who weren’t millionaires. So, yes, I can imagine it. Hillary? Couldn’t say, as I’ve never met her. Have you?

And, I might add, I’m an atheist. I’ve also served my country, for five years, and through two wars. Yes, there are atheists in foxholes. Most that I’ve met, more intelligent, moral, and better Americans than most of the “typical” Republicans I’ve met, despite their assertions to the contrary.

    Dole deserves to get beat.

  18. “She took godless money” what is godless money anyway? how much is it worth? does it burn when i handle it? so many questions til nov. 4 OBAMA/BIDEN 08

  19. Lopa from Philly,…..I beg to differ with any politician who claims to be a “Christian”….Even in the bible God admonishes us to watch a persons actions and not just what they say. Politics is a very ugly and many times “dishonest” business….Even the best of a christian can lose their way and Politics. You can’t be of this world and be of “God” at the same time. The last time I checked…The bible still had “Thou shalt not lie”, “Thou shalt not steal”, and “Thou shalt not bear false witness”…..Politics should not be ugly all the time. However, in a competitive environment we are seeing the worst of human nature more than our best….You might want to “rethink” your position…Talk with your “higher” power (God) and your own spiritual advisor about what I wrote. I’m willing to bet that “he or she” would agree with my synopsis of Christianity and Politics.

  20. wait_ I think all money is godless: doesn’t it belong to Caesar?

  21. Elizabeth Dole is a sleavy skank and should just retire. With her anti-immigrant views and sleazy tactics, she doesn’t deserve to sit in the Senate. America is better than that.

  22. Erik—-the Dole commercial stated a fact–Kay took money from the group—any implications or conclusions are up to the viewer I suppose.I don’t understand why you felt the need to clear up you were a gay atheist though—both are your choice and beliefs.Thank you for your service to our country.
In my earlier post I said I doubted if Nancy Pelosi would spend any “quality” time with a black american.I don’t know her it’s just the impression I have and the fact she marched in a parade with black americans doesn’t lead me to think my impression is wrong.
I marched in a Christmas parade here with Santa Claus last year—-doesn’t mean I got to spend any quality time with him—didn’t get the Corvette I wanted for Christmas either

  23. Bryan,

I don’t understand why you felt the need to clear up you were a gay atheist

As if many Christian’s on this blog do not wear their beliefs on their sleeves?

though—both are your choice and beliefs.

Why would you believe his being gay is a choice? I certainly did not have a choice whether or not I was heterosexual, I was just attracted to chicks, not other dudes. Maybe you had a choice, there are bi-sexual people, but the vast majority of folks prefer one or the other.

  24. “I don’t know her it’s just the impression I have and the fact she marched in a parade with black americans doesn’t lead me to think my impression is wrong.”

Oh, well. As long as you have that gut feeling, it’s irrefutable enough to base a political ideology on it, definitely.

Let’s all choose who runs the country based on who might snub who.

  25. Cara—good point—Thanks
Sarah—My impression of Pelosi was just that–my impression—not looking for your agreement or approval here.We all have impressions of what people are like by their words and actions and unless you live in Pelosi’s district like Erik—mine nor your impression of Pelosi has any impact.Who got snubbed ? Confused me with that one.

  26. [...] senate race, Kay Hagan, is “godless” is, thankfully, not going unchallenged.  In the Dole ad, it’s claimed that the Godless Americans PAC held a “secret” fundraiser where [...]

  27. Sorry to confuse, Bryan. You’d mentioned you doubted Pelosi would spend any quality time with black Americans, and I thought it interesting you’d form an opinion based on a feeling you had, that she’d snub a demographic.

  28. Both the scumbag Dole and Hagen owe the Atheist popluation an appology. Dole because of the obvious, but Hagen should have made Dole look like the Bigot she is. I understand that right now is not a good time but will expect Hagen to apologize to us for dragging us Atheists into it. That is unless she is a Bigot too.

This really sucks for us North Carolinians. I could vote for the Libritarian and throw my vote away. I can’t do that and let Dole win.

Eric, You are right on. Could you please let me know how I can get the information about the statistics? I have a few Christians I need to set straight.

Most Christians see us Atheists as evil. It comes from centuries of brainwashing. A perfect example for me is when I first meet my boyfriend the first thing I told him was that I was an Atheist. He is a devote Methodist. His first question to me was, “what keeps you from doing bad things?” I told him it is easier to do the right thing and I don’t need my soul threaten to do them.

For everyone who is outraged by Dole’s add please give her campain a call at 704-633-0014.

  30. Religion is a teaching tool for morality, not the cause of it. Morality is a basic function of the human experience. If we find something that hurts us, we know that action would hurt someone else. Socially, most human beings wish to have positive relationships with others rather than negative ones and a moral code is born. These get ascribed to paper and over time evolve into religion, but being devoid of religion doesn’t mean you’re devoid of morality, just it’s teaching tools.

  31. Elizabeth Dole,

I have in the back window of my vehical in big white letters, “DOLE IS A BIGOT”. Right under my Darwin fish. Let me tell you. It gets ALOT of attention.

I will be running my sign everywhere I go in NORTH CAROLINA until you loose the election or remove your adds and apologize to the American people. Just so you I can run 200 miles a day just with my job. That’s not including the extra-cirricular I WILL be doing.

The Atheist voices NEED to be heard.
