Lawrence Eagleburger Says Palin Not Ready

October 31st, 2008, 12:14 PM EDT

Bush 41 Secretary of State and John McCain supporter Lawrence Eagleburger answered “of course not” when asked if Palin would be ready to step in should there be a crisis.

“I don’t think at the moment she is prepared to take over the brains of the presidency. I can name for you any number of other vice presidents who were not particularly up to it, either,” Eagleburger said.

“So the question I think is, can she learn and would she be tough enough under the circumstances if she were asked to become president? Heaven forbid that that ever takes place,” he said. “Give her some time in the office and I think the answer would be, she will be adequate. I can’t say that she would be a genius in the job, but I think she would be enough to get us through a four-year – well, I hope not. … Get us through whatever period of time was necessary, and I devoutly hope that it would never be tested.”

McCain’s reaction when told of Eagleburger’s comments were, “Larry has never had a chance to meet Sarah.”

  1. He wasn’t being asked if liked her eyes he was being asked if she would be ready to run captain. I can name any number of radio hosts who are in love with Palin without ever having met her. This is the same thing repeated by myself and the key item here is the idea that she is not ready yet. Palin is not some awful woman but she is clearly not ready to be President and questionablely ready for VP.
You think Charlie Gibson asks some tough questions just wait until you meet a real journalist…
This woman would further degrade the image of America if placed into any high office before she can articulate herself before the American media.
Larry and I don’t agree on much but I’m right with him on this. McCain wants to ignore politics and talk about personalities; don’t waste my time Senator!

  2. Oh, geez. Talk about “damning with faint praise.”

“Uh, but really, you know….with a little time, she might be…er…hmmmm…what’s the word….ADEQUATE for, I dunno….(well 4 years seems like a really long time)….awhile, until something could be done.”

  3. Ahem,
“If you are not sure what Obama means by saying, Americans will need to make “sacrifices”, (and no one is sure what he means), do you think you are exempt of sacrifices because you may vote for Obama?”
Oh I don’t know … maybe like in WWII when people sent all scrap metal and boot laces and anything else for the war effort. That kind of sacrifice, like not buying your latest purchase and buying state or federal issue bonds instead. Only you and those who come up with these slanted & biased questions are not sure about what he means by sacrifice. No American can be exempt from sacrifice and if you want to be a part of this country I suggest you start educating yourself on our history. This is the first time in history we have started a war without raising taxes or asking any SACRIFICE from our people.

  4. Regarding this blog post, it doesn’t matter that Palin doesn’t have the experience to be VP and possibly P. Glenn Beck said this week on his radio program that that woman is smart enough to learn on the go, and place people around her with the knowledge to properly advise her. If Glenn Beck says it, it must be so.

  5. Alan cites Eagleburger as having said “…she will be adequate.”

Am I the only one concerned about having an “adequate” President? I’m not interested in someone who is only able to do an “adequate” job. Isn’t that like getting a “C” as a grade?

Nope. I’d prefer a president that can be rated at least a “B”.

  6. Well said, Eric. My Republican-leaning, Obama-voting husband said the same thing when he heard Obama talk about sacrifices.

He hollered, “Exactly! Why haven’t we been asked to do anything but go shopping and wear flag pins!”

It’s true. The sacrifices we’ll likely have to make, are to do such things as buy bonds, limit our gross overspending beyond our means, and buy American.

Know what I’d LOVE? Some web site that has a whole host of direct-from-the-factory, American-made products. Kind of like an Amazon or Wal-Mart, but all American-made products.

  7. Hell yes. Buy American.

Remember in the late 80’s/early 90’s the HUGE MADE IN THE USA stickers on stuff? Bring those puppies back.

  8. Great Communicator Colmes – Our Great and Noble Party Leaders see that you are deviating from the currently approved talking points – we must forget this Palin person, she is no longer relevant. Please immediately adopt the new talking points and strategy for ensuring the success of the future King of the World, Obama the Fair. Obama the Fair has recognized that his message and promises of change are incompatible with reality and understands that the public will hold him accountable for his inevitable failure to rescue the struggling middle class and save the world. We must waste no time in resetting the expectations of our loyal fan base. They need to know that, upon electing Obama the Fair, the promise of change will be delayed indefinitely. Our loyal flock will listen and accept whatever we tell them. Their inability to think and act for themselves has been proven repeatedly and most recently by their gullibility in listening to the Evil RepubliCONS who urged them to buy houses and other material bling they could not afford. We must continue to give thanks for the gullibility and stupidity of these people, or else we would not get any votes. We will tell them that the change we promised cannot be accomplished because of the Republicans – as we always do. Nothing is ever our fault. Our registered voters have a short memory and will soon forget their enthusiasm and hope of earlier in the campaign. This way, we can again promise them hope and change in the next election cycle, only to let them down again.

You must also encourage our loyal fans to vote with Al Qaeda and with Allah and pray for the humiliation of Bush and the neocons. Our godless, classless society awaits. We need only permanently silence our critics who speak with truth and reason. This, and our basketball court in the White House, are the change this country needs.

You must be aware that failure to abide by these new talking point instructions will result in the immediate revocation of your place as official Party communicator. If you disagree with us, we will again illustrate our desire for fairness and unity, by depositing you on the curb, as we did with those nasty, lying reporters from the Washington Times, The New York Post, and the Dallas Morning News. You may not make the slightest disagreement with the policy and rhetoric presented by Obama the Fair or he will not share his Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich with you.

  9. Someone has a lot of time on his hands to make the same joke, over and over, in increasingly lengthy posts.

  10. Yes, like you, I no longer need to work. Obama will support me.

  12. Hey buddy, I work – your stupid President and House just screwed up my taxes and the Job market. Take your blind conservatism, hate speech and ignorance and go somewhere else with it. Hannity’s website is just a few clicks over, you should recognize it, he’s got his face on it about 6000 times since he loves himself so damned much.
Since you’re also an arrogant prick, you two should get along fine.

  13. please forget the smear on both sides cant you guys see what is going on if anything i said is not a fact tell me It does not matter who gets elected until we can change are government we are in for a big fall (

I’m for America until we do term limits for congress stop are government from adding pork to every bill my god they add 150 billion of pork in the bill to save America and make corp lobbyist illegal nothing is going to change ((

Don’t you guys realize what is going on big corp. is running America in to the ground. The 1 trillion bail out was not because fanny gave home loans to the poor it was the wall street loans given to to rich but they run the news. Do the math did fanny give 10 million home loans for 100k to the poor Get real that did not happen The oil companies raise gas to 5 dollars a gallon(fox news said it was world demand the price will not go down ) so they can drill on all public lands for free and they made record profits to boot but they wont drill now they are cutting production now } Corp. don’t care about us they rule are government and news when every thing you buy is made in countries with no environmental laws and pay workers slave wages. We are becoming a paper economy no industry we are going in to interesting times )))

  14. Jim From Jersey – Thank you for illustrating my point. And for clinging to your guns and religion. You are a fine, albeit bitter, American.

  15. Mmmmm, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches….

Punch it in, Jim. Wonder why there’s no huge mega-web site for buying American?

I worked in an American factory one summer in high school and learned a lot of valuable things (which led me to believe, we should have conscription for jobs: Take your pick– waitstaff, factory worker, or retail).

I learned that we exported a lot of what we were making (good!). It was a top-quality product we were making. It was really hot, sweaty and boring (although I got pretty good at doing math in my head). And I felt incredibly lucky that I was not going to be doing it for the rest of my life. I could also understand how the other women there were going to have to, and my heart broke for them. Although some actually seemed to like it.

  16. How convenient that New Anti-Plumber Joe S. has appeared. And my tent still has not.

Joe, could you please ask Omar how it’s coming?

I want to be ready in case McCain gets it, and the Hoovervi– I mean McCainvilles start springing up.

    hee hee hee :D

  17. I’d be happy with a factory job at the moment Sarah, I work at minimum wage currently, because in rural New Jersey – there’s just not a lot of work (that’s economically feasible for me to get to)…

  18. “Larry has never had a chance to meet Sarah.” says McTaitor. Well Johnny – the American people have not had a chance to meet her either. You seem to be the only one who has met her – and you decided she was so dumb that it would be dangerous for her to speak to a free and open press. So she speaks to the lick-spittles at F*x and does celebrity puff pieces with Couric. 4 days to go and she has not given a serious interview. What are you hiding John – did you select her or did the Vietcong do it for you?

  19. Fear not, for soon Obama will be able to dictate what wage you all receive. It will be a fair and equal wage, with the exception of Party leaders who will require additional income to oversee the rest of you. He will also tell you what job you should have, in the name of fairness, of course.

Sarah – as I told you, your tent order could not be placed as it would be unfair to others. Besides, noone will work in the tent factory any more, cause its hot and boring and much easier not to work and take handouts.

  20. Poor foolish cons. Obama is not the “scary” person you’re making him out to be. If any of these childish attacks were working, he wouldn’t be ahead of McCain and the idiot from up north. What’s going to happen after Tuesday? It’s really tiresome. The Republicans are looking out for the middle class now? Please. The country isn’t buying your idiotic tactics anymore. Please go away, party of voter suppression…

  21. Other than minimum wage, which Teddy Roosevelt advocated, and no Republican has ever tried to abolish,
when did Obama dictate what wage you will receive?

  22. Anti-Lipstick-Wearing-Joe-the-Plumbing-Tentmaker: “As I told you, your tent order could not be placed as it would be unfair to others. Besides, noone will work in the tent factory any more, cause its hot and boring and much easier not to work and take handouts.”

Fibber! It’s ’cause you moved the company to India to enjoy the tax breaks AND fatten your wallet by a couple zeros, as well.

Doesn’t matter. Consumer Reports says they’re crap, anyway. Cancel my order.

  23. Another example of the pathetic arguments of the ignorant right…

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/31/mccain-palin-supporter-st_n_139711.html

watch the video. This guy made a sign and when confronted, doesn’t even know how to defend himself.

  24. Does ignorance keep you warm at night, anti-Joe?

This socialist, liberal garbage is a little pathetic. Maybe if you listened to Obama. Of course, if you think McCain and Palin have ideas, all hope is lost for you…

  25. You know something – I think the Republicans have just plain run out of steam! Their posts are just half-hearted going-through-the-motions, and, after 6 months they still can’t find anything good to say about McCain – just 3 month old discredited stories about so-called “associates” of Obama. That’s all they have and that is why I think they know its over.

  26. Furyus – The real question is have YOU actually LISTENED to Obama? Everything in my post is based on actual statements/actions by the Obama/Biden campaign. And, I agree, your socialist liberal garbage is very pathetic.

  27. This is the stupidest thing i have ever heard i worked in a factory job for the last 10 years had full health benefits 401k retirement made 21 dollars a hour but my job and the 1200 people that work with lost are jobs to the 5 new smelters Alcoa made in china (the smelter in rockdale has been there for 55 years they shut it down) where they have no environmental laws that was the main thing that made making alumina there cheaper

  28. Hey Sad,

They also pay their workers 30 cents a day.

That’s the problem with completely free trade, when one side abuses it’s labor and it’s environment and the other doesn’t, there is not a level playing field.

However, I don’t want the US to rape the environment and pay it’s workers a third of a buck a day, so regulating free trade is probably a better idea.

  29. Today Obama booted three reporters from his campaign plane. Their sin is being employed by newspapers that have endorse McCain.

Is this how Obama plans to unify the country?
Is this how Obama plans to make the US one nation again?
Is this how Obama plans to raise above partisan politics?

The Repubs are wrong Obama does have a record. A record of going back on his word. So I for one won’t be surprised when he reneges on all the promises he has made should he be elected. Of course, I suppose he will continue to blame Bush or Fox.

There is just no reason to trust Obama on anything.

  32. Jersey–from 1:59pm–In responding to Joe S.you refered to Bush “your President”–not doubting your patroitism, but Jersey if you are an American—Bush is “your” president also.I didn’t agree with everything Clinton did—but he was my President—don’t agree with Bush on alot of things—but he’s my President—whoever gets elected be it Obama or McCain—they will be my President.

Alan was on a panel last week where Gerldine Ferraro stated that Obama has had 21 months to fine tune his views—she stated Palin has had 9 weeks and she wasn’t doing a bad job considering the time she has had to prepare.

  33. “I think the Republicans have just plain run out of steam!”

They never had any. It was just hot air. And smoke blown in our collective faces.

    But back to Palin.

“Give her some time in the office and…I think…she will be adequate.”

Just a stellar recommendation. Like we might possibly survive a Palin presidency. Like it’s conceivable we might just survive. Like by the skin of our teeth we might somehow survive as a nation.

    Good job, Brownie.

See, a differing of viewpoint only. Bush is the President, but he’s not my President. I voted for Nader this last time. Didn’t much care for Kerry. Nader of course didn’t stand a snowflake’s chance in hell of winning, but he brought a decent plan to the table and I thought he’d do better than Bush. I see from current economic trends that I was right in my assumption about Bush’s ideas. Not sure if Nader would have been better, but that’s neither here nor there. George W. Bush is THE President of the United States, which is my country and homeland, but I didn’t vote for him, I do not like him, and I do not lay claim to him. People who do lay claim to him are of course welcome to call him their President all they wish.

  35. Jersey–I stand by my earlier comment.Your country, your homeland and like him or not—your President. You didn’t vote for him I understand that, but we don’t decide who our mothers or fathers are either. But they are still our mothers and fathers–agree?

  36. I don’t entirely agree. Our mothers and fathers are genetically our creators. Bush didn’t create me nor did he work for me.

  37. Jersey—-That was weak—-(thanks for the link earlier—it was fun—I fell 1 click left–1 click down)

  38. Hey Sad,

What does it matter when we are the only country with env laws the power plants at rockdale 2 are getting taking apart to be sent to china one to brazil where they can run with out pollution laws just spew to the air

I live in Brazil and am familiar with the pay scale here. I think you mentioned you were getting 21 bucks an hour, they are probably making somewhere south of 3 bucks an hour in Brazil. The labor costs make a bigger difference than the environmental costs.

I’m not saying you don’t deserve to make a good wage, I’m saying the additional environmental costs in the U.S. are not the biggest drivers for moving those jobs elsewhere. And Brazil has been strengthening environmental regulations here, as well.

  40. Hmmmm,

get real Alcoa has main smelter their you have cut down the rain forest

I haven’t cut anything down, what in the hell are you talking about?

and turned the place into a desert the lake doesn’t have enuff water to make elect to run Alcoa now they had to cut production

It’s really difficult to understand what you are saying with your atrocious grammar. I’m going to take a wild stab and say you think Alcoa has set up an environmentally unfriendly factory in Brazil? I don’t know anything about it, but it would not surprise me. Some pretty nasty eco disasters have been inflicted in the Amazon.

  41. Oh! no Sarah is a fresh air ,foxy, hockey mom ,one of us ect…..Is she ready to be or not to be?

  42. Dear Alan

Sometime, I think sexism exist in both parties. George Bush was a governer of southern state and an alchohlic. Bill Clinton was a governer of a small state and a reputed womanizer, Sen Obama is not even a governer. Is that man is jelous or sexist? May be he want a job in Obama’s administration.

This kind of idiotic comment is a “typical woman hater.” I can expect it from my Dad. May be he is want to keep his job.
