On Wednesday’s Radio Show…

November 5th, 2008, 6:00 PM EST

• Can President-Elect Barack Obama unite a divided nation? We’ll discuss the impact of last night’s historic election.

• What will the Republican Party do to recover from its devastating losses? Alan anticipates the GOP’s next move.

• Has Sarah Palin’s moment in the spotlight come and gone? Or could she return to presidential politics in 2012? We’ll weigh her options.

Responses to this post...

  1. The GOP will just wait for BO to pull a CARTER and then they will be elected just as easy.

  2. Some things never change – Drudge has a graph of todays stock market dip and a huge headline saying “0bama Anxiety” – if you click on the link to the story there is absolutely nothing connecting Obama to the pullback in stock prices – which every other financial site put down to profit taking from yesterday’s upturn. I guess the Eggman is still fighting his corner.

  3. The Republicans should consider whether they’ve mistaken the “fringe” for their “base”.

  4. If Obama paces himself and doesn’t do a Bill Clinton [class less power grab], he’ll get more respect.
I’m going to give him a chance. It WILL be interesting.

  5. Did you notice Sarah Palin’s body language during when McCain was giving his concession speech? She obviously did not want to be there. I thought it was inconsiderate of McCain, like she couldn’t wait to put some distance between her and him.

  6. Am I posting now?

  7. Well of course I’m elated over Obama’s win.

That being said ~ talk about a self-esteem blow for McCain and Palin.

Not only did they lose the election, but they have to live with the fact that the majority of Americans voted to elect a Socialist, Communist, Marxist, crazy Muslim, Terrorist who likes to kill babies ~ rather then elect the two of them!

I think it’s going to take years of therapy to recover from that.

  8. Lawrence ~

Absolutely, I noticed it. Both Palin and her husband looked down right digusted.

  9. I have to share this; I’m so upset over a situation I encountered tonight. While sitting at a Cub Scout meeting with my 8 year old son, I overheard another Scout (also 8 years old) say that he hoped someone would shoot and kill Obama! Now I’m sorry, this kid had to hear this from his parents or something – an eight year old kid just doesn’t come up with something like that.

  10. an eight year old kid just doesn’t come up with something like that.

I totally agree with you. That is taught. That is horrible. That is beyond words.

I disagree profoundly with Obama, but in that specific arena, Race Relations, the impact of last night is transcending.

  11. Uh….Danielle? Did you really “overhear” and 8 year old child talk about the assasination of a soon to be president or are you hanging around a sore bruised crowd who would have everyone believe that this world is doomed because a good, honest, educated, and eloquent man won the election of President of the United States of America by a landslide?! I mean, it would be down right dispicable for grown folks to hide behind the innocence of our nations youth to promote biggotry and hatred or to teach their children these types of principles…..Shame on some people. I guess they’ll talk about abortion and not have respect for the lives they created that are currently living!

  12. I guess we can all sit in moral condemnation of one another and promote the interests and life of a zygote and try to put to death certain types of criminals. I don’t have too much respect for some extreme people who refer to themselves as pro-life. Some of them hardly respect the lives of people who are currently in the “living” and then would have everyone believe that it’s somehow “ok” to take the life of someone who would not appear to fit anywhere in some of our societies.

  13. Talk about the “hypocrisy of it all” jeeze, the “dual standards” that some of us currently live by without once considering the “other side of the coin.” I’m glad some of us are a little more “enlightened” and can handle a paradyme shift that is more inclusive and considerate to all sorts of people and not just “ourselves!”

  14. Sen. Obama can’t unite this country—no politician can.WE as Amreicans, not Democrats or Republicans, can do it though.

With all due respect to our host Alan Colmes

Colmes/Hannity/Limbaugh/Oberman ( no we can’t count him, nobody watches his show ) all make a very good living off of us NOT being united.Who wants to sit and watch Sean and Alan agree on everything? That would be boring.

So Hannity and Limbaugh will wait and see if Obama can deliver on what he says and they will both rejoice if he fails.

Alan and Oberman will blame anything Obama deos wrong on the “left over problems” from the Bush Administraion.

Thats what they are paid to do–you can’t blame them.

Not picking on Colmes here—thanks for the outlet.

  15. Speaking of devastating losses – I live in North Carolina, and am happy to report that Elizabeth Dole, the Republican Senator from here (although she lives in Kansas and was here for 13 days in 2007) LOST! That’s right, LOST! She lost to a Democrat too.

I bet Jesse Helms is rolling over in his bigoted grave as I write this! People say that Robery Byrd was a racist, maybe so, but Helms was a bigot up until the day he drew his last, hateful breath.

I’m hoping Liddy (as Elizabeth is known) can find a good plastic surgeon in Kansas (whoever did her latest work should lose their medical license) and I hope she clicks the heels on her ruby slippers on swearing-in day and gets herself back to Kansas, post haste!

    Later, LIDDY!

  17. Thanks Carolina Guy—makes me ashamed to be from Greensboro—I really like the way you stole Kay’s “ruby slippers” line and posted it here like you thought of yourself.
So much for Sen Obama’s “Lets come together as Americans” speach.

  18. What’s next ? The Crotch Grab and the Moon Walk

  19. Bryan — I didn’t say I thought it up, idiot. If you read, and even if its the wonderful News & Record or even the Rhino Times — you know that Hagan said that, not me. I am repeating.

I thank God that Dole is off to Kansas..where she lives with Bob. She was a carpetbagger, and now she goes back to where she came from.

Bryan — go back to eating your BBQ, reading the N&R, and whining.

Nobody else said that Bryan — I am.

PS – If you don’t like Greensboro, there’s always Kansas City.

  20. Bryan, Can’t we all just get along? Let’s get to the bottom of your problem. Want to discuss anything with some one that won’t let you be intellectually dishonest,`and will call you on your errors? Let’s discuss, shall`we?

  21. Carolina Guy—You wanted people to think that clever line came from you instead of Kay’s speach writer.I read the Rhino—don’t care for N&R—too many like you work there.Let me guess—you are a News & Observer reader.

  22. Jeffro—Call me out— please correct me in my evil misguided ways.Thought we were getting along. And do tell—how was I dishonest?

  23. I read all sorts of papers, Bryan. And no, I’ve already said I didn’t think up that line, Hagan did.

But you know, what is more important here, Bryan?

The carpetbagger is going home to Kansas! YES! SEE YA LIDDY!

I think that is hilarious. Poor ol’ Jesse Helms is rolling over in his grave, probably mumbling some of his usual bigoted rhetoric about a Democrat taking his beloved position — may I add the first Democrat to have that Senate job since 1972!

Bryan — I hate you’re really that upset about all this. I agree with Jeffro, let’s all just try to get along here.

But seriously…New Zealand is nice in January.

  24. I sure hope the American people get behind Obama/Biden. They cannot get the USA out of the hole your in without the peoples help and support. I mean all Americans. Give them a chance. You have a president you can be proud of now. The campaign is over, move on.

  25. Bryan, I said, If`you wanted to discuss,I would call you on any foolishness, Not that you were dishonest yet. Just a warning that credibility is important. Do you have any?

  26. Carolina Guy—Go read my post from 11:23pm—-

2 questions for you—answer honestly if you will I have a point to prove.

Do you consider George Bush your President?

And if Obama had his exact same views and had voted the same in Senate–BUT —Had been a Republican—would he be President Elect?

Not upset I love politics—best election of our lifetime.

  27. Jeffro–I’ll bite—answer the same 2 questions I just asked Carolina Guy

  28. Bush is our president. But was appointed NOT elected in 2000. I don’t know what you are asking in the second question. Why don’t you just get to your point concisely without the riddles?

  29. The Republican Party used to be a great party. The Party of Abraham Lincoln has slowly and systematically been taken over by the extreme religious right, professing Christian values but living un-Christ like lives. The rest of the nation can see through their duplicity and it does not reflect well on the Party. Demographics have changed, a new generation of voters have emerged, we saw them expressed dissatisfaction with the Party. If the Republican Party is to survive and retake the White House, the House and the Senate and most of all bring these new generation of voters on our side, we need to distance ourselves from these religious extremists and other fringe groups. We need a strong leader in the Party that will take on these parasites, scrape them off like barnacles or they will sink the once mighty Republican ship for good.

  30. I have to say, yes, Bush is the President. The WORST President ever — and that is without a doubt, the worst.

I am tickled that Barack Obama won, Bryan. If McCain won, we would have been another four years of Georgie, and then we could all say that this country has been in TWELVE years of horror.

    C’mon, Bryan. Give President-elect Obama a chance.

But stop trying to change the subject on Liddy. You know she was worthless, her ratings were horrible, she did NOTHING for this state, country either.

She’ll have lots of time now to work her flower beds. maybe she can do Boniva commercials while Bob does Viagra commercials. Now..they BOTH have lots of free time on their hands.

By the way, I’ll treat you to a sandwich at Stamey’s if it makes you feel better. I’ll pay, but won’t eat there. I’m Southern (that’s right, I was born here)…and Jewish too.

  31. Bryan, I’ll answer you too:

George W. Bush is the President of MY country. I respect the office, but not the particular man. But as he is still the leader of the country in which I live, I would follow a directive he gave if it did not conflict with the safety of my family. Fair enough?

If Obama had the exact same views, he would not be a Republican by definition, so the second question is pretty flawed. What you seem to be asking though, is did the GOP have a chance in this election. Answer: Of course they did, the margin was 6 percent of the popular vote. The people realize that they share in the responsibility of putting an idiot in charge and the GOP may suffer a bit in the short term, but this isn’t a 25 percent landslide, the GOP will recover, and hopefully learn how to be more moderate and grow with the world instead of trying to keep American values locked in the 19th century.

  32. My turn Bryan. Do you think the new administration should move to remove the current cabal of contractors that have been profiteering, and start investigations of fraud and abuse during a “Time of War”?

  33. I’m thinking….Liddy Dole might have some time to organize a sewing circle with Sarah Palin.

  34. Crickets?

  35. Excellent point, Jeffro. Excellent!

I know a guy who is bringing home $45,000 for four months of contracting in Iraq. Needless to say, he’s been there eight months and is going back for another term there.

The current administration has done sooooo much for this country hasn’t he? People are able to head off to Iraq and made $130,000 a year with the blessings of George W. — and meanwhile, someone you may know is hungry in this country tonight because they can’t even find a minimum wage job to take the place of the mill closing down.

I would like for Bryan and others to answer this question: What is wrong with that picture?

  36. Damn–they gave up too easy—it’s time to move on people.

  37. Bryan! Answer the question!

    GO OBAMA! GO HAGAN!

  39. Thanks Carolina guy. Bryan is credibility limited. I don’t really expect much critical thinking.

  40. Probably didn’t want to waste his time with me after I told him I was Jewish. We’re about as popular in peoples’ eyes as African Americans.

He’s probably really upset that the President-elect has picked Rahm Emanuel is his choice as chief of staff. He’s Jewish too.

  41. Jeffro—CG—-Hey Jersey( me and you have done this one before )–website stuck——2nd question—this country needs change–we all see that—-and this country needs to reunite—When Obama takes office he will be MY President—-none of you—no liberal I have ever met will ever support a Republican President.

What will unite this country now is conservatives supporting thei President ( like most do anyway –except right wing nuts and talking heads ).My point was if Obama had been elceted as a Republican the 3 of you would have no use for him—-the blacks would call him an “Uncle Tom”

Contractors do rip off out government—-be more specific–give me a name.

Carolina Guy is a good example of the problem within our country right now.Take defeat with grace—Victory while being humble—-but it’s just not in him.

    Answer this Jeffro—with 75% more money—why wasn;t it a 25% landslide—I don’t know.Hell for $664 Mil we could have gotten Jersey elceted—sorry Jersey

  42. Why is Iraq W. Bushs fault? I did 2 tours there before he was elected. Oh that’s right, we all forget that it all started back when Iraq invaded kuwait and was raping and pillaging that country and then massing in the south to aparently move on further.

  43. Jeffro—-explain my limitation in credibilty .

  44. Jeffro maybe you want to discuss the $250,000 you claimed to be in debt—guess that makes you Credit Limited?

  45. All I know is I hold these people’s feet to the fire and tell them credibility is important and that I will call them on their nonsense. And they wilt every time. Intellectually bankrupt,Authoritarian followers with a bad case of cognitive dissonance, Is what I see in Almost all of these morons. :-)_

  46. Bryan, Answer my question! I was civil enough to try to answer yours. Stop with your nonsense. You are risking ALL credibility.

  47. What have you called me on Jeffro—I back up everything I say here

  48. Please, Bryan, look in the mirror. You say I should take victory with humility? What about you, sir? Where is your grace in the defeat? I don’t see it, and I don’t think anyone else here does either.

The McCain campaign sunk itself, the Republican party turned on itself — and this country decided it was time for a change. Long live the voters!

If McCain had one, Bryan and all his cronies would still be dancing in the streets. But no, he lost, he can go back to doing what he does best, and that is represent Arizona — while Palin (I still have nightmares about her being VP, much less President) can go back to being a hockey mom and baking cookies.

And Liddy can darn her carpetbag while she’s on the way back to Kansas!

    God bless America!

  52. You want me to name names? Why? Answer the question. Is it patriotic to allow profiteering and tax cuts to The wealthy and big oil in a “Time of War”?

  55. Are you willing to investigate reports of fraud and abuse of our tax dollars in a “Time of War”. And prosecute those that have allowed it?

  56. Bryan,Answer the question.

  57. No Jeffro it’s not patriotic—dumb question—now give me a name—not what you heard from someone—back up your point—if you can.

CG–I didnt get pissy—-you made it personal and started name calling becaused I called you out on it.

  58. LOL @ Budda! How bout them Blue Devils?!?!

  60. Are you willing to say that the next administration should try to get some of that money back with investigations and to prosecute those that allowed it and profited from it?

  61. Okay, Bryan, I am sorry I called you an idiot. Feel better now?

  63. I hope she does too Carolina Guy–I really do.But if the $ 9 Mil jet they tried to sneak in on us here is and indication of what she’ll do in DC I remain doubtful—did that not bother you?

  64. Jeffro—what do I have to explain—name a contractor—you have a computer go look one up—I’ll wait—back up your point

  65. See Caroline Guy–you can be nice to a conservative–I knew you could do it—-I’m damn proud of ya’

  66. Thanks Bryan, For your answer. Congraulations! You are ONE STEP closer to calling out the treason filled and un-patriotic actions of MANY you have defended in the last couple years. Honesty is important. Thank you.

  67. Hello again Bryan. Allow me to rebutt your rebuttal with this rebuttment. (My impression of Bush)

You don’t have to blindly support the president, that’s not the American way Bryan. Remember what this country was founded on: Lack of governmental representation and unfair policies by King George and Parliament.

It’s our duty as Americans to voice our displeasure and even remove our support from the president if we disagree with him, something that Republicans should completely understand seeing as they are the biggest proponents and defenders of the second amendment, which was added to allow colonial militias to arm and defend against British solders and their poor quartering behaviors.

If McCain had been elected, I would have cried because I believe his policies are exactly wrong financially, and that the country would have been in it’s final days. In summation, I didn’t vote for Republican or Democrat, Barack or John, I voted with the issues that were important to me and thus support the man who presented them.

And people celebrate in various ways. with all the slander, vile lies, and ignorance that the liberals have had to put up with (even on a blog named ‘Liberaland’ you’ll have to excuse if some are taking the opportunity to fire back, especially as you try to piss in our corn flakes and sour the victory.

And I think someone with my views does need to be elected President, but I’d be shot after a week.

Like I said, I dislike Bush, but if he asked me to do something to him I’d probably do it with pride because he is the leader of my country.

  68. LOL @ Bryan!

  69. Bryan, I won’t post names of contractors. Don’t play little games. You are a smart guy. You know who has been in Iraq, War profiteering.

  70. Jeffro—name a contrctor that YOU know had defrauded the country—just 1—hell you have a computer right there at your fingertips—you can do it—

I have not blindly supported Bush Jersey—-how would you know if I did.Now back up your mouth and tell me 1 lie you have seen me post here–we have ben at it a few days—tell me 1.

Jersey I hate to get personal but could you tell me how old you are?

  71. Bryan, If you think we should prosecute wall street CEO’S, Why is bush and paulson allowing them to get another bonus? Don’t you think you should Call your reps and the white house and tell them what you think?

  72. Do we need a Dr. Phil intervention here?

Just kidding, trying to lighten it up here a little.

  73. I know the contractor I deal with Jeffro and they are straight up—-like I thought—-you can’t do it.All mouth.

  74. Good one Carolina Guy

  75. Bryan, Are you denying that contractors are defrauding the country? Are you spinning in circles?

  76. Bryan, Of COURSE your ganna say your guy is straight up. I wouldn’t expect anything else from you. How many more or our troops should die over there so you can make money?

  77. Okay, last night Ralph Nader said that he hopes Obama doesn’t become an “Uncle Tom” for big industry, actually he said that he wonders if Obama will become an Uncle Sam for Americans or an Uncle Tom for big business (I am paraphrasing).

How could he ask such a thing when the current administration has whored us out already?

Shepard Smith took Nader to task and it turned ugly. I don’t like Shepard Smith, but he was right on when he took that old fart to task.

  78. Here we go again–I know Jeffro—like I said before as soon as we all agree Bush is to blame for Global Warming/High Gas Prices/Housing Crisis/WTC Conspiracy/Hiddenburg falling and Titanic sinking we can move on as a United Country—right?

  79. First off, I didn’t say you directly were lying, just that lies have been told, and they have.

Barack being a Muslim Terrorist, being a socialist, wanting to bankrupt the coal industry, etc. It’s been like a Fox News Spinstravaganza in here.

Now I am preparing to be ignored due to being young:
28, father of 3, GED when I was 15 and been paying rent and taxes ever since.

  80. Bryan, Why is your guy allowing wall street CEO’s to get their bonus this year with my money? Marxism? Socialism? No It’s Fascism. Do you know the difference?

  81. Who do you think is should blame for the current policy. You are defending the indefensible because of your Cognitive dissonance. Do you support corporatism and crony capitalism? If you do you got some explaining to do.

  82. Jeffro—-I’ll draw the line here—my compnay flies equipment in and out of Iraq with NO military support–NONE–We have lost 168 employees without a single US servieman killed prtesting anyone I work with—so know what the hell you are talking about before you run off at the damn mouth. We don’t make money off of endagering US soldiers—-so from me and the other men I work with—Kiss My Ass

  83. The rest of you people excuse me but I took that one a little personal

  84. What was it that CEO, it escapes me who it was now, that said he was “just sick about it” when executives from the company took that $400,000 trip right after the government bailed them out?

My point (and I agree with you Bryan) is that I’m fuggin tired of people using MY money to give bonuses to these big corporate CEO’s when I got a 2% raise this year.

And Jim from Jersey, kudos for what you’ve done man!

  86. Bryan, Be intellectually Honest. Who should pay taxes in a “Time of War”?

  87. Excuse me. Jeffro, I was agreeing with you in my last post. Sorry I was confused. Pardon the mistake.

  88. Bryan, Is it Patriotic to not pay any taxes in a “Time of War”? I pay more taxes in ONE QUARTER than most corporations payed in the last two years. Who is Patriotic now?

  89. Hey Bebe, I got news for you sweetheart, Joe the Plumber is his own worst enemy. Alan knows a dumb ass when he sees one.

  90. No Problem David. You and I have the same questions that we need answered ;-)

  91. I give up Jeffro—who? So we only pay taxes to fund things w agree with—thats puts a new light on it.

  92. Bryan, Can we “Win” an occupation?

  93. Bryan,Are You a Loyal Bushie?

  94. Jeffro—Did I challange your patroitism.

  95. Bryan, Would you cry and kick and scream if your taxes went up three points to the rate it was during the Clinton years. In a “Time of War”?

  96. No Jeffro I do not agree with everything Bush has done–am I loyal—-absolutely—its called being an Amreican—now I am challenging your patriotism—-when are you loyal to the President Jeffro—-not Bush—but to the President

  97. Jeffro—you pay a War Tax? Lost me there.

  98. No Bryan, You did not question my patriotism. But many have, For simply questioning the policy of my government. And you know what Bryan. I will not tolerate it ever again. It is my life mission to expose the REAL un- american, Non patriotic cowards in this country. I apologize if I offended you but I am calling people out on a daily basis. Bush defenders have ALOT of explaining to do.

  99. Any Questions?

  100. I am loyal to a President that doesn’t tell me he’s not going to be in the business of Nation Building, And then goes on a nation breaking imperialism spree. I am loyal to a president that doesn’t condone torture. That respects the fourth amendment, All of the Constitution. The troops are NOT HAPPY with this guy. guy.http://www.militarycity.com/polls/2006_main.php

  101. Jeffro—its our job to question out govenment—there is no self policing in DC—-thats doesn’t make anyone unpatriotic—Bush defenders have no explaining to do—I don’t agree with some of his calls but I will defend him as I will Obama—-thats makes us patriotic.

The point I was trying to make before is that we have a chance to unite this country—Obama can’t do it—McCain couldn’t have done it as President either—it will be easier with Obama simply because most will support their President–NO liberal NO where would have ever supported a republican–but true conservatives like myself will support Obama—except extreme left/right wing nuts who wants a President to fail.

  102. Jeffro I won’t address torture with you–I have real strong feelings on that that will never be changed.

Joke here——–putting panties on a mans head is torture in some parts of the world—I bet some of our politicians have done in a hotel room with a call girl before though.

  103. Have roll call shortly—be cool Jeffro

  104. Thanks Bryan.

  105. Don’t get too cocky about this election victory. The GOP lost because they couldn’t spy domestically with Karl Rove out of the White House. The Democrats actually lost this election on several occassions, but it took some tremendous media spin to “Change” the subject. Hillary had Obama beat. Obama was beaten by McCain too, but nobody paid the top strategist so Obama won. When Obama “Brushed His Shoulders Off” the GOP failed to listen to JayZ’s song…he used the words “Middle Finger to the Lord.” If Obama had been tied to that saying with his track record on Rev. Wright and Father Pfleger nobody could have spun that. You get what you pay for. Nobody paid the top strategist to beat Obama. Don’t feel bad, Obama didn’t pay either but he’s Black. It’s a first that other paid for.

  106. All the attacks on Rev. Wright and Obama’s relationship is what turned the election away from McCain in PA. All the attention on things that didn’t affect the Office is what made 52% of America realize that McCain was out of touch and so was Faux News:

So apparently Cecil believes that American votes mean nothing.

  107. And Pfleger says it pretty eloquently in this less cut up vid:

  108. BRYAN,I agree with you somewhat. I am a liberal and served my country. I honor my commander in cheif, but i can disagree as well and BUSH did alot to make me disagree. Fighting the people that attack us on 911, i fully support, but he fumble the ball going to IRAQ. I feel strongly THE GOP has painted itself into a corner with right wing talk radio leading the way. I see nothing wrong with being a liberal or a conservatived. The GOP has to change it,s way of thinking. I feel if SEAN and RUSH would do a show once a week per month in the hood with alot of inner actions of people in the hood instead of having appeal for rural and moddle AMERICA. Having a show like that by presenting conserative ideals in a friendly light would help and present AMERICA as all of AMERICA by making these people feel part of AMERICA as well. Feedback as well.

  109. Usually, I like your comments, especially to the wing nuts who call in. However, last night, a caller pointed out that Obama is half-white and half-black and you attacked him viciously…and kept asking him why that should matter. That was very unfair and made me sick.
Can’t you see that Obama is culturally and racially both black and white and understand how great that is?
    Obama is America.
I have never written in before, and you will probably never read this, but I feel so strongly–and surely I am not the only one who feels this way–that I had to express this. thank you

  110. Libbi I think many of the people who call in to Alan have very weak points or don’t articulate their position very well and this probably becomes irratating to Alan. He puts up with this stuff all day and night long. I can understand his frustration with many of these callers and don’t forget he has to fill a lot of air time, so a rant or two can go a long way.
I too, think he sometimes chastises the innocent

  111. Why do some many of you who criticize pro-lifers for valuing a babies believe we love to kill others? Do you not understand the word “pro-life?”

  112. Sorry American, the various bombings at abortion clinics kinda threw us off.
