Walter Veltroni, leader of Italy’s center-left opposition says the remark “seriously damages the image and dignity of our country.” MP Massimo Dondi says Berlusconi is guilty of imbecility.
But as his opponents demanded an apology be issued, Mr Berlusconi, 72, said the remark was in fact “a great compliment”.
