They’re Proud Of America For Electing Someone They Didn’t Support
It’s just nauseating that the very people who fought against an Obama victory and went so far as to call his views anti-American are now telling us how great it is that he won. Michele Bachmann, for example, the Republican congresswoman from Minnesota, who said she was “very concerned” that Obama “may have anti-American views,” is now lauding his victory. Bachmann barely held on to her seat as a result of her previous comments.

Now, Bachmann is saying how wonderful it is that Obama won.
…Bachmann (R-Minn.) told Politico Thursday that she was “extremely grateful that we have an African-American who has won this year.” She called his victory “a tremendous signal we sent.”
Yet, just a day earlier, she compared an Obama administration to the Sopranos, and said, “This is knuckle Chicago politics and that is what is going to be in the White House now.”
And Obama non-supporter Bill Bennett, the conservative former Reagan official, now a radio talk show host, says Obama’s victory is “an incredible milestone” that means “you don’t take any excuses anymore from anybody who says, ‘The deck is stacked, I can’t do anything, there’s so much in-built this and that’.” (h/t Crooks and Liars)
Hear that minorities? Obama is in charge and that means no more excuses!

Great, so all we now is a gay President followed by a muslim President followed by a woman. Then no group can claim they ever got a raw deal in America. This Bennett guy seems to think electing a person with something other than white skin means we have completely discarded racial divides. What about equal pay for equal work? What about the parts of the country who believe by in large that we DID just elect a muslim and/or a terrorist.
Bachmann is a modern day McCarthy but thankfully in this age people have had enough of witch burnings and public stonings. Bachmann seems to have forgot we have recording deviced everywhere and she just looks stupid being proud of a ‘questionable American’ becoming President. She and Limbaugh should go out on a date.
November 8th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Alan, you are blaming conservatives and opponents of Obama for not recognizing the historic nature of the election? Everyone appreciates that, no matter what they think of Obama’s politics. Shouldn’t you give credit to people like Bachmann for that? In addition, shouldn’t we all be supporting our President-elect?
November 8th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
I think that people are upset at what Bennett said because he is saying it from the perspective of a fortunate white man. His message is not necessarily bad, though. Too often despair leads to excuses, and while we need to be doing all we can to help unfortunate (usually black) children in failing inner city schools, we also need to project a culture of hope that says anything is possible. Barack Obama’s election is symbolic of that idea.
On the other hand, based on everything she’s ever said about Obama and her difficulty in getting elected, I would say that Bachmann is being disingenuous and trying to reinvent herself so that she has an easier time staying in office next time around.
November 8th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Just to note, though I know you didn’t specifically refer to US history, Eric, there weren’t any witch Burnings in the US, at least, none that I’m aware of.
November 8th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Look, I didn’t vote for Obama because I don’t agree with his ideology; however, you would have to have a heart of stone not to be proud of the fact that we now have an Af. Am. president. I don’t like Hillary, but if she had gotten elected, I would be proud that we finally have a woman president. So, ALAN, I don’t think Bachmann is being “disingenuous” by being proud of this fact.
November 8th, 2008 at 5:07 pm
I agree that she may well be sincere in being proud that am African American has been elected for our Nation’s highest office, but I think the problem comes in how expressing pride in the success of someone she derided makes her look like she’s trying to cover her ass.

Clearly the top picture shows us that you can put pearls on a pig, but you still end up with a pig.
November 8th, 2008 at 6:03 pm
So, okay, some are a bit slower than others….My mother told me to always consider that some people have to chew on steak a bit longer before realizing how good it is….well, they’ve chewed…now…if they want to be nice….I think it’s nice….just play nice and they can stay as long as they want…they can even help….but, it is conditional …..be nice. All hypocrites are welcome to the big tent as long as they behave. We are used to them. The Republicans have been around for quite a while. We accept them … if they behave.
November 8th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
“It’s just nauseating that the very people who fought against an Obama victory and went so far as to call his views anti-American are now telling us how great it is that he won.”
False.
It is a perfectly reasonable usage of the First Amendment to offer the opinion that some of Mr. Obama’s previously expressed views are un-American, then switch to Loyal Opposition mode following his election.
Insofar as Mr. Obama supports the Constitution, I’ll offer my full support.
Telling me how to think is the cause of the nausea on this end, sir.
November 8th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Dear Alan
I am one of those 56 million American who did not vote for Obama. I do agree with many of your bloger. He is our first black president. I still do not trust him. However, when I heard his speech in Chicago and saw Rev. Jackson and Mrs Obama———I cried. I thought finally “We shall overcome.” I will get it I saw the segrigation. Michel Obama is our first lady. They will be in white House. Specially the children.
Once again Obama grew up in Howai with white people. Obama have nothing to do with it.He will not get it. Our age and older people remember the segrigation. Ofcourse part of us will be happy. I was this exited when Nelson Mandela became president of South Africa however, I did not voted for him. It is the concept.
Another example is Condoliza Rice and Clarence Thomas.
Obama is not a massiah but his wife is a real American black whow born and grew up in South Chicago. If she was running I would support her. His ife is smart and idealistic. She will be more like Hillary Clinton than Jackie Kennedy.
I still have my doubt about Obama however, he accomplished something as a black man.I still remember Rev. Jckson was treated like Hillary and Sarah. His fault was he was black. America was not ready for a black president. Just like now we are not ready for a woman president.

Yeah, Bachmann is a jerk. But I really don’t think Bennett is a horrible person ~ I think people are reading in to much of what he was trying to say but perhaps didn’t say it the best. I will give credit where give credit is deserved ~ I actually think for a Republican he has had some very kind words regarding Obama (both before and after he got elected)- at least from what I heard him say.
November 8th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Bennett is a hypocrit Danielle, and I suppose there are so many of them on the Conservative right, that that alone doesn’t make him horrible, I just can’t believe
he gets any press.
November 8th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
FOURMOREWARS-
Well maybe I’m wrong then, but everything I heard him say wasn’t all that horrible – compared to the likes of Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity anyway. But hey, I guess anybody sounds nice compared to them.
November 8th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
I understand what Alan is saying—he’s a liberal (not an insult ).The liberals I know and I am not talking about commentators on TV or Radio—the one’s I know in person, will not support an elected official they didn’t vote for.I don’t know why.
Now I expect some of the liberals here will say ” I would have supported Rudy or Huckabee or Romney if they were the President Elect—just not McCain” , but we all know it’s not true.
KickJoeOut.com and CensureBachmann.com (or whatever the sites are) An Independent Senator and a Republican Congresswoman that didn’t vote for Obama.I didn’t vote for him either but I will still view him as MY President—-where is the BeatBryanUpsideTheHead.com—-I feel slighted.
November 8th, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Sorry, I don’t understand the problem. I didn’t vote for Obama, don’t like his ideolgies, but I will support him (until he gives me reason not to) and am still proud of America. What’s the beef? You would rather have them criticizing him?
November 9th, 2008 at 1:16 am
“It is a perfectly reasonable usage of the First Amendment to offer the opinion that some of Mr. Obama’s previously expressed views are un-American…”
It only looks reasonable to people who appoint themselves arbiters of what is and what isn’t “American”, which, in fact, is as about as un-American as you can get.
“…then switch to Loyal Opposition mode following his election.”
So you call a guy a commie one minute, then turn around and say how great it is that a commie got elected.
That sounds like a subversive talking.
November 9th, 2008 at 2:44 am
Would you prefer that we scream at the top of our lungs about stolen elections like unhinged lunatics? Really, we have good examples to follow if you’d rather have that. I can’t believe you’re complaining about people losing with grace.
Two other important points. First, conservatives are proud of the country because the system works. The transfer of the most political, military and economic power in history is still happening peacefully. That’s a huge achievement.
Second, you might also consider that many of the things the President-elect has said are appealing even to those of us who may disagree with many of his policy points. For example, in New Hampshire in January, he said this:
“Democrats, independents and Republicans who are tired of the division and distraction that has clouded Washington, who know that we can disagree without being disagreeable…”
Too bad some of his followers can’t get that last part.
November 9th, 2008 at 4:19 am

whining cons…
November 9th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Bachman is disgusting. The definition of “pandering” doesn’t stretch far enough to cover her lies and total about face.
I wonder if Bennett really believes, 100%, that Obama’s victory means that there is no more prejudice anywhere in our country. Because if that were the reality, then he’d be right. A minority student or a job applicant would never have to worry about their race being an issue. But ummm… I’m pretty sure that although this election signifies a shift in race relations, that prejudices still remain.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:20 am
I think Michelle Bachman should jump off of a cliff into a giant toilet bowl. I don’t know her personally, but what I have seen of her makes me believe that she has a tremendously weak mind that’s easily swayed by the people she surrounds herself with.
Michelle….my best advice…grow a backbone, use your own mind, and come to your own conclusions. People don’t need a “Simon says” leader or a weak minded elected leader….As they said in SNL and the lady that played Hillary Clinton next to Tina Fey’s rendition of Sarah Palin….Grow a pair!
November 9th, 2008 at 10:25 am
WFG~ I’m not sure what part of Eric’s comment you’re referring to, but in regards to witch burnings in the US, there WERE. The Salem Witch Trials, remember?
Most of you are missing the point. The point is that Obama haters who said the most extreme and negative things about him are now suddenly deliriously happy that he has been elected POTUS.
Alan isn’t talking about regular people who didn’t support O bc of his platform. He’s specifically referring to ‘tards like Bachmann who called O a socialist, terrorist, etc.
I blame Bennett for the lack of reading comprehension skills displayed by way too many Americans.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:26 am
Danielle, you’re not wrong. Bennett looks like the grandfather I always wanted too.
Bennett:
“I am much happier with the prospect of Sarah Palin as president than I am Barack Obama as president.”
November 9th, 2008 at 10:28 am
I hope they put Bachman in charge of the party. I hope we see a Bachman/Palin ticket. It would be the largest landside in history…and almost ensure Democratic Party (and liberal) domination of all three legs of government for 8 more years after President Elect Obama’s term. Please, please, please….you Republicans out there….put on one of your several faces and make this dream ticket happen….remember Bachman/Palin…..a ticket to drool over…
November 9th, 2008 at 11:24 am
That would be a dream team, eh Robert?
But I would prefer a race between two GOOD tickets. I was happy w/ Obama vs. McCain because I thought either way we get some grown ups in the whitehouse.
Then McCain picked Palin, and suddenly there were not two reasonably good choices anymore.
November 9th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Agreed Um, the absolute turning point for me was the Palin choice. After all the polls and feedback the Repubs have that Palin was a drag on the ticket I am astounded by the amount of talk about Palin in 2012.
I do recognize the historical significance of this election, but I have to say I am getting really fed up with all the talking heads focusing on him being an African American. I did not vote for an African American, I voted for a man who I thought was intelligent, honest, and cared about this country; his color is inconsequential to me.
November 9th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Those that voted for Obama because we couldn’t stand “four more years of Bush’s economic policies” are in for a rude shock. Obama is surrounding himself with an army of conventional, mainstream advisors and economists. Remember that the kernel of Obama’s economic plan (tax the rich, redistribute to the middle class) was developed before the economic meltdown. Now, it is highly unlikely there will be any tax increases. Such increases will only stifle economic recovery. Obama’s people know that. There may even be tax decreases in capital gains, etc.
However, there will be massive increases in deficit spending to re-inflate the “bubble”. Huge increases in corporate welfare for existing, troubled industries such the auto and construction industries. A plethora of new corporate welfare programs in the form of subsidies, tax credits and other incentives for development of “green” energy sources. There will be even more corporate welfare for retail and service business by massive infusions of cash into the economy in the form of “economic stimulus” packages. The national debt could more than double in his first term. The next time the “bubble pops” it will be much worse.
Bush x 10

Dear Donna from Missouri
I still do not like president elect Obama. I also think Buchman’s comment is correct. His administration is too Catholic. Strangely enough I am a strict NYC Italion Catholic myself. I do know how we oparate. Tony Soprano is the mordern day Godfather. He do not go to confession, he go to “Therapy.” He is from my part of the world——New Jersey.
I remember when children were killed by Alabama people in Church. I was young and I did ask my mother why children? My mother was vrey quite and said because they are “black children, they are worse then us.” So,as a teen ager I stoped complaining for long time. After Obama wining I called my mother in Florida. My mother said ” now Obama’s children wil be respected and protected by secret service.”
She also did not voted for Obama. Donna! I do not blame president Bush. You are not from NYC you did not see the devostation. He kept us safe. What about desaster of “Katrina?” he delt with two big desasters in 5 years of his presidency. One by the terrorists and other my mother nature. Nither Ronald Regan or Bill Clinton faced thit type of real desaster.
I do not think Economey is bad. Every time I go for shopping in Walmart or T.J.Max I do not see any problem.May be I had seen worse.
People were living beyound their means. Living a rich life with “Credit.”
My chidren said that, we are “well off.” Why? Our row home in south philadelphia is paid off. We have one car.Our bigest expence is owning a computer, Cable TV and a cell phone. I dress well because I buy my cloths from a “Thrift shop.”
Is President elect Obama is not petriotic American? I do not know, even with my street smart. Time will tell. Just like Bush. If there is no desaster then he will be fine. I do not have much faith in him. We will see after his legal inauguration in January 2009. We are still post election period. Obama’s honeymoon as a “black president is not over yet.” I am not sarcastic, just truthfull.
November 9th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
The first ‘un-American’ the press should investigate is Bachmann herself.
A cute smile and and empty head will only get you so far.
November 9th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
I’m with Buchmann. She may still hold her words about her concerns, while she suggest the fact that it is a great thing having able to elect an African-American which does signal that this country isn’t all that racial as many like to suggest (are you suggesting Republicans aren’t supposed to celebrate African-American achievements?). Bennet’s pointing out that Affirmative Action and it’s like needs to be reconsidered because Obama’s win does suggest majority isn’t racial; not no more excuses for Obama. Another shallow and no content to your gloat Alan.
November 9th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
You know Alan, I really don’t see the point of you being upset over this one either.
Obama told the people in PA that they were “small, and bitter. cling to their guns and religion.” How did he get paid back for it? He won.
Murtha stuck his whole bottom half of his body in his mouth and his people still voted for Obama.
I didn’t expect “say it aint so, Joe” to live to see the outcome of this election for putting his big boats in his mouth all the time. But the people still voted for Obama.
Will you “liberals” not ever be happy? Why don’t you do yourself and your sheep a favor and put a link on your site pointing to Donna Brazile’s letter to Losers. She obviously thought she needed it for McCain’s supporters but he has already addressed us in his gracious and generous concession speech.

All atacks aside (fair and balanced) I would like to ask you something ) how come 2 months ago when gas was 5 bucks a gallon ALL the news channels said it was not price raping it was world demand from china and India and we pass drilling on public lands for free. Me and my friends still drive to work gas is 1.95 now? glad the world stop using oil ) we are sheep to the corp. news why is nothing said about this ?
November 9th, 2008 at 10:38 pm
“we are sheep to the corp. news why is nothing said about this ?”
Hi Hannity,
I believed you answered your own question. From what I understand of the media they only report the news that is given to them by the “newsworthy”. Why nothing is said about it would be best asked of Alan where he sits in an environment everyday and put out such crap.
This is why we each have to be a life-time learner. Take everything with copious amounts of cynicism and healthy doses of blocks of salt. (I got that from another poster on this site)
November 9th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Oops! Sorry Alan, I’m “showing you some love”.
Didn’t mean to be that offensive.
November 9th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
I’m not saying anything against you and don’t think asking Alan will help. How can we pay 5 bucks a gallon for gas during the summer because of world demand and now it is 1.95 and going lower. Nothing is said by any news channel how all of America got riped off ?
November 9th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Come on it cost me 20 dollars to fill up my lawn mower to cut my grass hehe they wont drill offshore now cost to much and OPEC is cutting production to raise the price of oil what happened he he
November 9th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Hannity, I share your sentiment. I had to pay the ridiculously high price for that stinking gas myself.
As I was doing some research last night on the internet I read some articles about OPEC. I found what they said very interesting. You may want to start there.
November 9th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

BACHMAN is not a dumb person. She deserved to be fried on HARDBALL as well. She had to make the people who voted for her happy and at the sametime do what she wanted to do deep down inside. As for BENNETT,he was honest. He is a GOP man. You have to look at BENNETT from a sports point of view.
November 10th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Bachmann did come back on television and apologized for her remarks because they were taken out of context by others. I remember the soon to-be first lady saying something that she later said other people took out of context. Look where she is now. Soon to be in the WH. Since Brachmann expressed forgiveness this gives her the freedom to express her feelings.
