What Kind Of Dog Suits The Need?
Malia Obama has allergies, and Barack Obama wants a shelter dog. Both criteria can be met.
To his credit, Obama co-sponsored, with Dick Durbin, a bill to crack down on abusive puppy mills, and posed with “Baby” for the book A Rare Breed of Love by animal welfare advocate Jana Kohl.
The above photo (h/t Crooks and Liars) shows Obama with “Baby,” a three-legged dog that lost its fourth limb following years of mistreatment at a California puppy mill. The toy poodle spent much of its life locked in a small wire cage. The breeders cut out Baby’s vocal chords so that they would not have to hear her cries. In cages next to her, other dogs literally went insane, spinning repetitively with blank stares. Still others were gravely ill, maimed and had filthy, matted coats. A number was tattooed on the inside of Baby’s ear, marking her as just one of many dogs at the mill.
Given that you can find all kind of breeds and mutts at a variety of animal rescue operations, what kind of dog should the Obamas get?

a pitbull…he can put lipstick on it and name it hockey

lmao, saturn!
i can’t believe the reporter said that this “could be the most pressing issue facing” Obama. that’s absurd.

I don’t know. I’ve never had a dog. I would have to know more about the personalities of Obama and Michelle’s children, and that of prospective dogs, to see how well they might match up.

I suppose it should be an obedient breed that doesn’t tend to be rambunctious in doors, since the interior of the White House isn’t something that should be damaged.
November 16th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
A pig with lipstick and a hockey stick would do fine

Glad to see we are focusing on the important issues he is going to have to tackle instead of talking about the economy, iran, healthcare, the jobless rate, and national security.

Never mind what kind of dog.
First, who’s going to feed the dog? Second, who cleans up the inevitable messes? Third, is the radical right going to get all bent out of shape if it’s a black dog, or a white dog, or if it’s got spots, because I’m not sure if we as a country need to deal with more of this kind of thing right at this moment.
Grrrrrrrrrr…

A white crippled dog?–Is there a hidden message here?
***I am sorry but I couldn’t resist a bad a joke.***

A timberwolf. So when crazy wingnuts charge the White House lawn they can really get a piece of reality.

LOL, WFG and Rocky!

Bichon Frise is a good, hypoallergenic breed. And it’s the only dog that was bred for human companionship, as opposed to a setter being bred for hunting,a shepherd for herding, Sean Hannity for acting like an ass, etc…

A Bichon Frise

Let us just hope that it is not a feces eating dog!

Kitty Roca is a normal part of many a dog’s life….ask Chaney?

A mutt, heavy on the Spitz. A shelter dog, one that’s been dumped by a previous owner.
Spitz are good with kids and it doesn’t take one long to become family. Not too small and not too big. Mutts add a dash of flavor and tend to have a higher doggie IQ than their more pure counterparts. Spitz mutts can have long hair so they’d have to be sheared for the hot months.
No dog is truly hypo-allergenic. Poodles may be closer to it than most but poodles are girlie-dogs.
Take the daughter to an allergy doctor and get her treated for the sensitivity. If the treatment takes, she’ll thank her parents later for it.
The best dogs are the ones someone’s dumped and that made it to your home before the county animal control caught up with them. Feed them. Take them to the vet and get ‘em fixed up. Dogs are smarter than many people are. They know what you did for ‘em and they’ll never forget it.
My “wandered in” dog is as close to a Finnish Spitz as anything. The only clue she’ll give us about her previous life is when you pick up a mop or broom to clean up the floor and she cowers or flees. So, we know what part of her old life was like.

Bryan: “A white crippled dog?–Is there a hidden message here?”
If you lived in a state notorious for the cruelty of its puppy mills, you’d appreciate how tacky and heartless this sounds.
But you’re looking for a “hidden message,” so OK… we were all going insane in our cages with cut vocal chords, maimed, and spinning in circles with blank stares, and Obama is hopefully going to free us from 8 years of nightmare living conditions.

I wouldn’t know Sarah—I live in a conservative based community—we treat our animals nice here.Where was that puppy mill? OH California –that might it explain it.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
How does that explain it Bryan?
My, we’re bitter.
November 17th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Actually, most of the worst puppy mills are in the red states of the Midwest. But nice try, cretin.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:34 pm
Oh, and it’s nice that you treat your animals so nice. Too bad you conservatives don’t treat humans the same way. Give my best to Liddy.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Sarah–”You conservatives” ? How do you know how I treat people? Produce your puppy mill research hypocrite.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Not bitter here Epiphany—just stated what was in the article above.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Bryan, instead of being so lazy, why don’t you do your own research if you’re so fascinated as to whether I’m lying about puppy mills? (Your use of the word “hypocrite” is interesting, though. Do you even know what it means, or do you just hurl it, willy-nilly, as an insult?)
I don’t really care to know how you treat people. It’s a safe bet, anyone who’s so flip about animal cruelty, abuse and neglect as you are is below average in feeling compassion for human beings, as well.
November 17th, 2008 at 4:59 pm
I wasn’t fascinated by your lying Sarah.Just prove what you say,if you feel so strongly about puppy mills.Show us your proof.I want to see that study that shows most puppy mills are in the midwest.Did you even read my original post here?
November 17th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
OH California –that might it explain it.
Posted by Bryan
Again, how does that explain it?
Nevermind, as I of course realize you were just making an obnoxious dig at the state of California. No? I think so.
As far as puppy mills are concerned in which some dogs are sold to the general public as just pets and some dogs sold as fighting dogs and for medical experiments, the documentaries I have seen on this subject centered on the largest ones located in the South. One was shut down as a result with the help of an animal humane organization which had member plants in the mill. Extemely heartbreaking and difficult to watch to the end.
The people who owned the mill got very little jail time for it too.
November 17th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Hey Bryan– So do you not know how to prove me wrong on the puppy mills? Here’s a great invention: Google.
I love how conservatives demand that liberals or moderates do all their homework for them.
Actually though, if I had a faster Internet connection, I’d probably furnish the links, but you’re really not worth the extra time, puppy-hater.
November 17th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
It was your comment Sarah—prove it.I don’t have to prove you wrong, back up what you say.
Epiphany—got any more details on that puppy mill in the south?I know M. Vick had a dog fighting camp in Va–I don’t remember anymore though.

As a true dog-lover, I would like to applaud President-Elect Obama for having co-sponsored the bill which would crack down on puppy mills. I like him even more than I did before. As for President-Elect Obama’s choice of dog, I think he should choose the very same breed he is shown holding: a poodle.
I have had poodles all my life. They are extremely affectionate, highly intelligent and a poodle’s fur does not come out in strands but in clumps and even that’s rare from what I’ve seen. This is great advantage for people who don’t want dog hair all over their clothes and furniture.
