Republican Felon Loses Senate Seat

November 19th, 2008, 12:35 AM EST

The loss of Ted Stevens to Anchorage mayor Mark Begich in the Alaska Senate race means Sarah Palin can’t appoint herself to succeed Stevens as she may have hoped.  It also means Stevens had an unhappy 85th birthday.

Last month just days before the election, Stevens was convicted by a federal jury in Washington of lying on Senate disclosure forms to conceal more than $250,000 in gifts and home renovations from an oil field services company.

  1. Oh has this been finalized?

Also Alan, did you catch Bill Ayers on Talk of the Nation earlier tonight?

  2. Hello Mr. Colmes. I like to see you on FOX making that news report a little bit more “fair and balanced”. :) I am a Ron Paul supporter from Sweden. Sounds like a contradiction? It isn’t. :) I just have a question to you and the rest of the American “liberals” out there. Why do you call yourself liberal and not social-liberal? I am a classical liberal and a fan of the kind of liberalism that was coined by Bastiat, Locke, Adam Smith, Ricardo, etc. Why have you guys turned that into a left-leaning ism, which definitely was not the intention? Another thing that is really weird with the US is that the right-wing (Republicans) are communist RED and the left-wing (Democrats) are capitalist BLUE?? How were you thinking here? It seems to me you guys get hold of the wrong end of the stick here … :)
    Just curious.

    Best Regards

  3. Frankly, I’m surprised it’s taken this long. Stevens should have been barred from the race the moment he was convicted giving Begich the win by default.

Granted, this is a slightly more “legitimate” win by Begich, depending on how you look at it. Stevens is a criminal who knew he was losing.

Stay tuned for Franken’s win over Coleman in Minnesota, despite the GOP smears going on up there.

  4. Just to clarify, the governor of Alaska doesn’t have the power to appoint a replacement senator. That power was stripped by ballot initiative in 2004 after Gov. Murkowsky appointed his daughter to a vacant seat in 2002. In the event of a vacancy, a special election is held.

  5. NA NA ,NA NA, HEY HEY, GOOD BY

  6. I can’t believe the criminal got as many votes as he did!

  7. Alcie Hastings (D) Georgia, impeached judge in Georgia, keeps getting re-elected to congress, crimminal.

Barney Frank (D) Mass., ran a brothel in his D.C. home, keeps getting re-elected.

Robert Byrd (D) WVA, former KKK leader, keeps getting re-elected to the Senate.

Rod McDermott (D) Washington, illegally took possession of a telephone conversation that was taped illegally, swept under the table by the dems, keeps getting re-elected.

Just a few examples of very shady dems who foul the air in the halls of congress.
