Republicans Still In Denial About Election

November 20th, 2008, 8:13 PM EST

In fact, Republican House Majority leader John Boehner seems to be in denial about the last two elections. He still insists that not only are we a center-right country, but that Congress, itself, is center-right. This defies rational thought.  In an interview with Time magazine, Boehner just won’t let go.

 h/t Think Progress

TIME: The Blue Dog Democrats are also fiscal conservatives. Have you done any outreach to them on banding together on fiscal issues?
Boehner: America is a center-right country.

TIME: Still?
Boehner: Yes, no question about it. When you look at all the exit polling, Americans don’t want bigger government; they don’t want higher taxes. And frankly, I think the Congress is still a center-right Congress. And I do think there will still be some opportunities over the next two years to work with some of the more moderate Democrat members when it comes to the issues of spending and taxes.

Hey, didn’t we just have an election that increased the Senate by 7 Democrats and the House by 21?

Responses to this post...

  1. The Republicans are in denial about nothing.

“Denial” would require them to actually believe what they’re saying. They don’t believe it, they’re only hoping some of us will.

It’s not denial, it’s only more old-fashioned “spin”.

Rush has been busy trying to pin the current market meltdown on Obama. The Obama recession/depression. Like Boehner, Limbaugh doesn’t believe it. He’s only hoping some of his audience will. No doubt, some will.

  2. Mr. Colmes you are a tough cookie. But i think your sometimes unfair and skew the facts just to play evils advocate. Please don’t take it personal, but the issues sometimes you stand behind just doesn’t make sense.

  3. Alan: To repair the economy is simple real S I M P L E
PLEASE DO THE MATH>>>> 700 BILLIONS divided by every american over 18 years old, comes to $300,000. Now it is distributed at the same time to every one. We the coustomer would spend this money in many different ways, buy cars, buy furniture, buy appliances, pay up mortgages, pay credit cards, ON an ON an ON Inmediatly we the customers would put this money in the economy
it is not difficult THINK ABOUT DO THE MATH The money
would not go to top cats> It would tricle up from the bottom What a great idea You don’t need a PHD to figure this out
    See Alan

  4. A big part of why Obama won is that he was perceived as the tax cutting candidate. That’s center-right.

  5. SHOW ME THE MONEY.

  6. TIME: The Blue Dog Democrats are also fiscal conservatives. Have you done any outreach to them on banding together on fiscal issues?

Boehner: America is a center-right country.

TIME: Yeah that’s great, but have you done any outreach to the Blue Dog Democrats?

    Boehner: Congress is center-right, too.

TIME: What about the Blue Dog Democrats?

Boehner: America is a Christian nation founded on biblical principles.

TIME: Did I just ask you something about outreach or did I just dream that?

Boehner: America first! First, last and always! GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!

TIME: Do you understand any of the words coming out of my mouth?

    Boehner: Drill here! Drill now!

TIME: Do you do outreach or not?

Boehner: The people of this great nation want smaller government and lower taxes and personal responsibility and by golly I’m gonna give it to them!

  7. Lemlakit:
This shows how little you,and average Americans understand about the economic crisis.
You’ve heard the 700 Billion Dollar sum obviously, and you seem to know what it means(I dont think you do).

While we’re at it,have you heard the number 13 Trillion Dollars(in the context of the economic crisis)?Do you understand what it means?(Hint:In that Number is the true diagnosis of the economic problem, and it also tells what needs to be done(and why it is very hard to do)

  8. One of the funniest parts of the Republicans living in denial:
Sean Hannity’s website got a countdown clock for the 2012 elections within 1-2 days of the results of 2008.
I mean, this guy doesnt even want to wait for Obama to take office, before starting to count down the days for an opportunity to take him out of office,Dont think prejudice bigger than that exists anywhere else in our political space.

  9. Tomhanna:
You are partially on target, but not quite.
    America is substantially fiscal conservative.
The center right space is dominated in practice by RELIGIOUS conservatism and not fiscal conservatism. I wouldnt categorize fiscal conservatism as left or right;its merely responsible governance.Left,Right, comes down to areas where responsibility cant be clearly assigned, and judgemental calls are made(and have to be made):Like Roe vs Wade kind of issues.I can never argue with conviction that in America that socialist policies(like increasing the progressiveness of the taxation, like Obama is suggesting) are LEFT. Its merely long term irresponsible(but short term understandable,if you truly understand the tough situation we are in).
Back to the point:America voted for a rejection of phantom fiscal conservatism:
All we heard from Republicans was the same old phantom carrot of “lets lower taxes, that means smaller government”.Lower taxes accompanied with same high spending,an implicit deficit which implies devaluation of the currency, and devaluation of the post tax money the government “lets you keep” is NOT smaller government, and a LOT of the people have learnt to some degree atleast, that over these 8 years. If you want to have a debate on fiscal conservatism, please back up your plan for lower taxes with lower spending, and a contract to not increase the deficit for the sake of lowering taxes, because as we all know and have SEEN over this economic crisis, increasing the deficit nullifies the economic benefit of lowering taxes, and makes it worse.

  10. America is “Pro-War”, but anti “Endless War.” America is for “Equal Opportunity” and against “Bailouts for the Rich.” America is for accountability, but it closes it’s eyes when accountability could means “Treason.” What we are is a nation in search of the truth and the “Right” leadership. The “Right” leadership now comes from “The Left.” We are anti-war, equal opportunity, and for accountability. We told the truth and that’s why we won so many seats.

  11. Cecil,

Good morning. “We told the truth and that’s why we won so many seats.”

    THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT???!!!

  12. Did you see the denial of O’Reilly last night? Well he claims that the Obama’s girl was selling herself to promote Obama/the left.Hey! does O’Reilly sell himself(get a pay check) by spewing Fox news /right wings propagandas every day? He always claims that he is different from Sean Hannity(junkyard dog); yet they both get pay to spew the same garbage( obama’s voters are stupid, Obama has radical views ect….)

  13. “Sean Hannity’s website got a countdown clock for the 2012 elections within 1-2 days of the results of 2008.”

    Wow, that’s really unAmerican.

It’s as totally unAmerican as anything I’ve ever heard of.

Maybe Hannity should be investigated for anti-American attitudes.

Maybe he’s a subversive trying to disrupt the democratic process.

  14. The boohoo boy (sean) is at it again. He says “Eric Holder will not pass a security clearance and therefore is not qualify to be attorney general”. Why? well he “palls around” with FALN, Black Panthers,Wheather Underground. So this boohoo boy is still in denial because he wants to associate Barack Obama to terrorists by extention. This tactic is dead/ was killed by the voters, Sean.Keep on weeping in exile, my freind.

  15. The airways polluter,Rush El Limbo, has a new name for Obama: Community Agitator —Financial Agitator.

  16. The driveby media will not allow Obama to fail says el Rush In Limbo. Yes, the liberal media will not allow the right wingers(sean ,Rush) to destroy Obama presidency like they did with Bill Clinton.

  17. What a Boehner! Consult your election official if your Bo(eh)ner lasts more than 4 years in congress.

  18. Someone please tell Rush Limbo,it took a community organizer to win THE WHITE HOUSE. Making fun of of OBAMA,S skills came back to bite them.

  19. “Alan: To repair the economy is simple real S I M P L E

Every single caller on every single radio show has this solution. It is a bad idea. In the short term it would prop up the economy and help struggling families but in the long run it does nothing to ensure that all this doesn’t just happen all over again. I don’t mean to say your math or thinking is wrong but this is an econmoics issue not just simple algebra formulas but nearly endless factors coming to together.
Two issues that your give out doesn’t fix. Housing price drops and growing debt. Having the govt buy up our debt instead of banks debt might work. SO might some way to keep housing markets from dropping. You and I don’t have economic degrees so we shouldn’t pretend I we have all the answers. That is the job of Limbaugh to pretend he has all the answers and really just make broad assumptions about ‘how things should turn out.’

  20. Dear Alan

It is very true. They (conservative Republicans) are the one hated nominee John McCane. Specially Sean, Rush etc. They barely talarated Sarah Palin. She apparently was more conservative than McCane or Obama. It is the Coservative Republican’s fault for loosing white house and congress. They are all talk, no action.

I am still a stonch supporter of Hillary Clinton. Now she is our secretory of State. She is not a “First lady.” When I heard it in Sean’s radio show——-I was jumping with my bad leg.She deserve it. Now she can act on infamous “3:00 AM call.” I am so proud of her.

Bottom line is we are women. It is a man’s world. Tell Sean and Dick Morris they did not supported Hillary any way. Why are they pissed off? Hiring Hillary7 Obama is showing her talent. Hillary aan Joe Biden can teach Obama about FP.

  21. No, Sean Hannity cost Mccain the election. He was the one given talking points to Palin like “paling around with terrorists”,Who is the real Obama? ect.

  22. I am as conservative as anyone could be but (don’t faint) I want Obama to be a very successful president. I don’t like losing my rump in the stock market. I don’t like wars that go on forever. I don’t like seeing people out of work. I don’t like seeing obesity worsen because the folks are eating carbohydrate because it is cheap. I don’t like hearing that we don’t have enough money to properly educate our children. I don’t like that the cost of health care is so high. So, please, President Elect Obama, make good on all your promises.

  23. I like Sean Hanity. It is not his fault that McCane lost Election. He is a super conservetive, Irish- Catholic man. They did build “the Brooklyn Bridge, in NYC.” McCane and Obama is too libaral for him. He is honest with his journalism. He given every one fact and we should decid who to vote for. Fact is most Amrican’s do not know who is Nancy Pulosy and Harry Read.

To some young woman like Sarah Palin from Alaska—–Bill Ayre was big. He is like Timothy McVey.Only difference is Bill’s father is rich and powerful. Wether Underground was very violent during late 1960’s.

The country can be center right. However, the voters are prograsive and libaral.

  24. Alan, I’m in no denial whatsoever, no more than you would be had McCain and Palin won. I am going to enjoy sitting back and watching you squirm, as you do so well, to come up with endless excuses for Obama, Congress and the Senate, to try and justify all the future mistakes that are about to take place. I don’t care for many of the Republican choices on decisions made on key issues. It is a pathetic situation when “BOTH SIDES” don’t really care enough to make it all better by working together like a fitted glove. Until they start to show care and concern for America, instead of the selfishness they have for themselves, the country will continue to decline toward it’s 3rd world status.

  25. If McCain/Palin would have won,it would have been interesting watching the lovely Miss Palin give Harry Reid and rest of the Senate hell.I would enjoy seeing her bump heads with Nancy Pelosi,Hillary or anybody who questions her authority. As for the future, the economy is booby trapped, two wars, energy crisis, mortgage crisis, illegal immigration. The 44TH President needs a miracle,He may prove to be the messiah, lets hope his administration doesn’t jump ship like Bush 43.

  26. It’s not the VP’s place to give anyone in the Senate hell.

Plus, she would have to have a grasp of the issues.

  27. I know,I had an argument at work about this Lefty,I said if it’s the V.P place run the SENATE, then what’s the title of majority for, speaker of the house. Is ti just a title, this guy was hot and speach less.

  28. Sorry I in a rush,got to go.

  29. Alan your a good spinner.just gos to show you that by the video that Fox showed about the people that voted for Obama that dems are stupid people. although i already new that. Also its easy to see that you think Obama is god or somthing an cant do anything wrong. The reason i say that is i havent herd you disagrea with anything he has said.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. How is this different than Bush supporters saying that they voted for Bush because they wanted to “have a beer with him”,

Or the Dan Savage piece on Mike Huckabee supporters claiming they ‘voted for Bush because he was a good Christian, but he turned out not to be, but Huckabee is!’

Or Frank Thomas’ (What’s The Matter With Kanas?), interview with the guy in Pa, who said, “I like Bush, because, he’s REALLY sticking it to big business.”

Michael Shea’s , documentary , Red State, where some people voted for Bush because, ‘If we are at war, you are supposed to vote for the president”, “Bush was the the only candidate I heard of”, “the pastor said,” etc, etc.

    OR….the “Obama’s an A-rab” lady?

  31. majority whip,speech less,sorry4 the typo.

  32. The Republicans still want to send ambassadors to England to meet with Queen Victoria. Sometimes, they tend to live where others have tread….yesterday or the day before. Get with it, kids…the Republicans scored increased voter counts only in Appalachia. Dems even scored an electorial vote win in Nebraska for crying out loud. Get it??? The term, “Head for the hills” seems to have found it’s way into the Republican voter base expansion plans….well, good luck. Affordable clean coal is about 20 or so years away….so, you can keep West Virginia and the rest of Appalachia…..we’ll take the progressive rest of the country. Center right — nope. Center to slightly center left….yep.

  33. Define “clean coal”. Coal is clean NOW unless you consider carbon capture, which there is no economically viable technology today to capture the carbon.
