Brooklyn Rabbi And His Wife Victims In Mumbai

November 28th, 2008, 5:21 PM EST

Here is a good explanation of what Chabad House is, and what Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka were doing for the Jewish community.

…today we are all Lubavitchers, all Chabadniks. Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg and his wife Rivka Holtzberg were sent to Mumbai by Lubavitch to do their part to account for the thousands of Jewish souls, many

Israeli, doing business, and others seeking … spiritual enlightenment, in this major Indian city. They manned the Chabad House in Mumbai and met the expectation of every Jew who travels the world that in any place where it is likely that more than a handful of Jews might be found, there is a Chabad House (frequently where the Chabad rabbi and his family live) to offer Shabbos (Sabbath) hospitality, kosher food, perhaps even a bed for a few days, a connection to the root of the Jewish world and perhaps a little mashke (straight vodka) and a few hasidic stories more than “thrown in” for inspiration.

Other victims at Chabad House have been identified as Bentzion Chroman, an Israeli with dual US citizenship, and Leibish Teitlebaum, an American from Brooklyn.  A fifth victim is believed to have been an Israeli woman who has not been named.

  1. Thanks Alan,

I have different political belief’s, but you thoughts on this are appreciated. B”H, but it could have been here. As easy as it is to cross the border, we’re lucky that this hasn’t happened dozens of times in the past 7 years.

We are all Indians and ChaBaDniks now.

  2. Some of my Jewish ancestors came to Manhattan and Brooklyn. Rivka’s name reminds me of one my great great grandmother’s. Her name was Reva.

  3. Polish and Russian and, or, Ukrainian.

  4. My daughter Lyah Shuklin , Israeli citizen was supposed to be in meditation group. She is 32 years old with dark brown short hair. Does anyone know the fate of other Israeli meditation group memebers? Did anyone meet her? I am in Philadelphia US. Please, anyone who has any idea how to find out if she is alive or met her, e-mail me
